The search for Jonathan Schaff, now 27, is one of many missing person cases in the area. Agencies in both Vermont and New York continue to investigate and follow leads regarding his disappearance.
Five years later, search continues By Krystle S. Morey Posters with Fair Haven’s Jonathan Schaff ’s name, photo and the phrase “Help bring me home!” still decorate bulletin boards at area establishments. Schaff vanished from a bar on Main Street in Granville on Jan. 18, 2014, just four days shy of his 25th birthday. “There is somebody out there that knows exactly what happened,” said Lt. Reg Trayah of the Vermont State Police. “We want that person to come forward, even if it’s anonymously,” he said. Trayah pleaded: “Point us into a direction that maybe we haven’t seen.” The now almost 28-year-old was last seen walking from the former Riverside Pub toward the New York-Vermont border at about 4:30 a.m. He was wearing a light-blue hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans, work boots and a black Carhartt jacket. Identifying features include a spider web tattoo between the fingers of his left hand and an eagle on his chest. Cell phone data, police said, showed

that he may have been on Vermont Route 149 in Pawlet, Vermont near Newmont Slate Company or Sheldon’s Concrete. Schaff ’s cell phone was found in an abandoned vehicle at Loomis Trucking near the New York-Vermont border, but no additional evidence was found. May Winchell, Schaff ’s mother, said she texted her son around 2 a.m. the day he went missing, asking him about his night, but the response she got back, “Leave me alone,” she didn’t think was Schaff who responded. She responded with a text: “Jonathan, are you alright?” And received nothing back. “I, honest to God, don’t think that Jonathan had his phone at 2 a.m.,” Winchell said. “I want nothing more than to see Jonathan walk through that door,” she said. Prior to his disappearance, police said, Schaff was involved in physical alterca-

Last weekend for lights By Krystle S. Morey After five weeks of brightening up Granville, the holiday decorations around the village are just about ready to come down for the season. This weekend is the last chance for folks to check out the lights show in Veterans Memorial Park, which is synchronized to music on 89.3 FM on the radio. Lights are choreographed to music each night during the holiday season, every hour on the hour, from 5-9 p.m. Volunteers from the school, community and the village’s Holiday Decorating Committee will begin removing the lights on Jan. 14. The displays and trees in Veterans Memorial Park were lit during the annual tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 7. Swags, wreaths and lights on village streets, bridges and light posts made their debut the day before Thanksgiving. Thousands of people from
around the area traveled to Granville this winter to see the impressive light displays. Village officials said this year’s “Rudolph’s Rockin’ Christmas” theme was a hit. More than 1,500 people from across the region ventured to see the 2018 tree-lighting, which was held in coordination with the Slate Valley Museum and the Pember Library and Museum’s First Friday events. A holiday committee made up of village trustees, town officials, community members and business leaders gets together to develop the theme each year. Those same volunteers, who start planning the holiday lights shows in July, are tasked with untangling and testing lights, setting up displays around town, organizing the tree-lighting event and taking the lights down once the season comes to a close. Great Meadow Federal Credit Union pledges $7,500 each year to sponsor the annual lights in the park.
Stewart’s Holiday Match sets record Lakes Region shops raise more than $11,000 for local charity Area children’s charities will have something to smile about this year. Stewart’s 2018 Holiday Match program has raised more than $2 million for local children’s organizations, setting a record for the fifth consecutive season. From Thanksgiving Day through Christmas Day, Stewart’s customers donated more than $1,031,000 to the program, with each individual donation matched penny for penny by Stewart’s Shops. Stewart’s Shops in Granville, Whitehall, Poultney and Fair Haven brought in a total of $11,812 collectively, representing an impressive 14 percent increase in donations to Holiday Match over last year. Whitehall topped the list with
$4,925; Granville collected $3,445; Poultney brought in $2,144; Fair Haven’s donations totaled $1,298. “We are impressed by our customers’ generosity season after season,” said Stewart’s Shops president Gary Dake in a company press release. The shops have an additional incentive for raising money. Dake will pay a visit to the store that gets the most collections and work there for four hours. He’ll also do a four-hour stint at the store that has shown the highest growth in donations over the previous year. More than 1,700 children’s organizations received Holiday Match funding from the 2017 Holiday Match campaign. This year, there is even
more money to be allocated. There are no administrative costs and 100 percent of the funds benefit local, non-profit children’s organizations. “The power of spare change adds up,” said Stewart’s Shops spokesperson Erica Komoroske. “It’s a great ‘feel-good’ story all around.” All local children’s charities are encouraged to apply for funding from the Holiday Match program through Jan. 31. “We are proud to give back to our communities that have supported us for so many years,” Dake added. For more information on the Stewart’s Holiday Match program, visit www.stewartsshops.com.

drag out and we understand the toll it has on friends and families,” he said. The investigation was largely led by Detective Sgt. Todd Wilkins. Last year, on the fourth anniversary of Schaff ’s disappearance, Wilkins said, “This case is far from cold.” “This is one I would love to see solved,” he said a year later. However, last May, Wilkins left his position for a medical procedure and, upon his return, took a different position within the State Police. “It certainly wasn’t an easy decision for me,” Wilkins said. “I had to step away from the case because I wasn’t going to be working for several months,” he said. “I had to step away and leave another detective to handle the day-to-day stuff, and it was very important that we maintain contact with the family on a regular basis.” Sgt. Henry Alberico, case officer, is now tasked with fielding tips and conducting interviews regarding Schaff ’s disappearance. Prior to leaving, Wilkins met with Schaff ’s family and urged Alberico to have contact with the family on a regular basis as he has for the last several years. “The good thing about putting a new detective on there – Sgt. Alberico – is they can see
it with fresh eyes,” Trayah said. “He could see something that someone else didn’t.” Schaff ’s case hasn’t gone cold, Trayah said. His office is regularly following up on leads that come in. Last year several people were interviewed by police regarding Schaff ’s disappearance. In 2017, Vermont State Police SCUBA Team searched a quarry on York Street Ext. in Poultney after receiving a tip. Another quarry on Vermont Route 149 in West Pawlet was searched and several witnesses were questioned in 2016. “We have been able to exclude a few areas, but there are a few areas we haven’t been able to exclude,” Trayah said. “We are always looking for information … even if its information they think we may already know,” he said. “Every little bit that comes in, we follow up on.” Trayah added: “If you have some information, if you know of anything that might have happened, please reach out to us as soon as possible.” Vermont State Police accept tips online at vsp.vermont.gov/ tipsubmit, by texting keyword VTIPS to 274637 (CRIMES) or via phone at 802-773-9101.
Continued from front page tion with another man at the pub. Witnesses said Schaff ’s glasses had been broken in the fight, but he didn’t suffer any serious injuries. It was also reported that a man and woman offered him a ride, but Investigators believe Schaff declined and continued walking. Because of the location of the Granville bar, on the border of New York and Vermont, agencies from both states have worked together over the last five years to find Schaff. It is still very much unknown if this is a Vermont case or a New York case. “We have the ability to throw a lot of resources at this case, depending on the tip,” Trayah said. Trayah, who commands detectives in the Rutland, New Haven and Shaftsbury offices, has worked the missing person case for almost five years. “Our entire unit has been vested in this case and we are going to follow absolutely every single lead that comes in,” he said, noting duration of these types of cases varies. “Sometimes these cases can

Big grants for United Baptist Church of Poultney Vendors sought for yard sale The United Baptist Church of Poultney has been given a pledge by The National Fund for Sacred Places, a granting source for active churches, that it will match the first $100,000 raised by the church. Additional funds realized may be matched at 50%. This church suffers, as do many Vermont churches; the congregation, though slowly growing, is small, and funds for building upkeep are diminished greatly. It has been years since the Meeting House on the Green, as it is also known, has had the needs of its outside “envelope” addressed. The detailed wooden decorations and the entire exterior need repair and preparation for/and painting. Professionally estimated by the historical architecture firm, Keefe and Wesner of Bennington, the cost of the entire project including ADA compliance comes to $400,000. This is daunting, but this building is a treasure which must not be lost and anchors the East Poultney
green around which is a circle of mostly 18th century homes. Small in size, but large in spirit and hope, the congregants are forging ahead. They hired Full Harvest Fundraising of Steep Falls, Maine, to design and direct a complete capital campaign including training of members to visit potentially interested donors. $400,000 seemed a great leap of faith, but the building is an icon used in a photo as a promotional poster by the Vermont Department of Tourism in the past. In the first few months the faith was justified and the initial $100,000 was realized and will be matched. Now halfway to their second self-raised $100,000, the church has been recently awarded a check for $20,000 from the Vermont Department of Historical Preservation and a pledge of $10,000 over the course of two years from the Alma Gibbs Donchian Foundation. Obituary Joseph William Daniele, 91 Joseph William Daniele, 91, beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on Dec. 28, 2018, at his home on Lake Bomoseen in Castleton. He was born April 3, 1927 in Springfield, Massachusetts, to Joseph and Jane (Dynan) Daniele. He spent his youth in the Chicopee and Springfield areas until the family moved to Wilbraham, Massachusetts. During the early years of World War II, he attended Springfield Trade School and worked afternoons at the Springfield Armory. At the tender age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy where he proudly served as a Fireman First Class aboard Destroyer Escort 577, Alexander J. Luke in the North Atlantic and European Theaters. After the war, he returned to Wilbraham and completed high school. He was a charter member of the American Legion
post of Wilbraham and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7991 of Dunnellon, Florida. Joseph worked with his father after graduation, at the family business, Daniele Overhead Doors, as well as building homes throughout Wilbraham and East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. With the support of his wife, Joseph would later earn a Bachelors of Arts Degree from American International College, a Masters of Education at Westfield State College and a Certificate of Advanced Graduate Study from Springfield College. He taught Industrial Arts at Ludlow High School in Ludlow, Massachusetts for more than 25 years and worked summers remodeling area homes. In addition to teaching, Mr. Daniele loved the written word, both reading and writing.
Following his introduction to colonial home furnishings by his wife, he authored six books, on Early American metallurgy, furnishings, miniatures, and clocks. Joseph was proud to be listed in Contemporary American Authors and English-Speaking Authors (UK). He went on to
become a woodworking editor for Early American Life Magazine and some of his miniature pieces have been accepted by the Shelburne Museum in Vermont. He met his beloved wife, Jean (Hegarty) Daniele, in 1947, at a softball game and they became engaged just one week later. On July 31, 1948, they entered into a loving marriage which lasted 67 years. They raised three daughters in the home they built together, the Massasick House in East Longmeadow, Massachusetts. After retiring, the couple divided their time between their homes on Lake Bomoseen and at the Rainbow Springs Country Club, Dunnellon, Florida. An avid golfer, Joseph loved a good round on the links with his wife, friends and grandsons. His hobbies included cooking, wood carving, reading and volunteering with

Meals on Wheels and at the Senior Centers near his homes. His grandchildren fondly remember waterskiing, tubing, and boating at the lake on hot summer days followed by poker games in the evenings. Joseph was an excellent cook and well known for his spaghetti sauce and roasted pork Christmas dinners which were shared with family and friends. Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Jean, his brothers Thomas and James, daughter Lanore, granddaughters Meghan Durling and Ashleigh Kida Dunton. He is survived by his brothers, Robert Daniele of Wilbraham, Massachusetts and Donald Daniele of East Longmeadow, Massachusetts; his daughter and caregiver, Daria Durling of Castleton and daughter Sharon Kida of Stafford Springs, Connecticut; grandsons, Matthew Deshais and Michael Deshais, both of Ludlow; granddaughter Bozena Kida Oliver of Kansas City, Missouri; and two great-grandchildren, Molly Durling of Castleton and Wyatt Oliver of Kansas City, Missouri. Joseph wrote a special note of gratitude to the following people: his devoted daughter, Daria who sacrificed much to provide his care; her children, Mike, Matt and Molly, who helped in so many ways; Rutland Area Visiting Nurse and Hospice; and his dear friends, Michael Bruce, Dennis Fortier, and Gladys Sharp for their attentive care during his final months of declining health. It takes a village and these people allowed him to remain at home, in his favorite chair, until his final breath. In respect to his request, there will be no memorial service in Castleton. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Mary’s Church in Hampden, Massachusetts in the spring. There are no calling hours. Arrangements are being provided by Hafey Funeral Home in Springfield, Massachusetts. In lieu of flowers, and in accordance with his devotion to the Holy Mother, donations may be made to the Dominican Monastery of the Mother of God, 1430 Riverdale St., West Springfield, Massachusetts 01089. www.hafeyfuneralservice.com

Castleton Tree of Remembrance The Castleton Woman’s Club would like to thank all of the individuals and families who made donations in memory or honor of family and friends on the 2018 Tree of Remembrance. All donations go toward local scholarships. The tree lighting was held Dec. 14 in front of the Castleton Free Library. In addition to the lighting of the tree, families enjoyed holiday stories and songs and a visit from Santa. The Castleton Village School Jazz Band entertained the crowd as families socialized, visited with Santa and enjoyed hot chocolate and homemade cookies. The Castleton Women’s Club wishes to extend sincere thanks to members of the community who helped make this evening so memorable, including Jan Jones, Skip Fenton, and Maurice Ouimet. Donors’ names are underlined and listed in alphabetical order with those being honored or remembered following the donor name.
