Ice Continued from front page and getting outside and doing something.” So she and her daughter did a little online investigating and purchased a book on making your own outdoor skating rink. They gathered a few basic materials. They bought braces, found some plywood on the farm, and used an old tarp as a liner. And then after assembling the rink form a few Sundays ago, the family watched as the West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department pumped four loads of water into the rink, which is 22 feet wide and 90 feet long. “Next year, we plan on making the rink wider,” Hulett said. For now, though, the rink is perfect, Hulett said. “It’s very family friendly. And it doesn’t matter if you can’t skate. In fact, you’ll be in good company! You don’t even need skates; if you want to just slide around in your winter boots, go for it.” For skaters with no gear, the family has a few pairs of skates and hockey sticks available for use. For the sake of safety, they encourage skaters to wear helmets and use skating aids as needed. The Huletts read online

about rink maintenance through the cold months. “Snow on the ice traps heat, so with the snowstorms we’ve been having, we need to keep shoveling off the rink.” Recent snowfall also provides snow to bank along the sides of the rink for safety. The Huletts have even rigged up a dairy farm Zamboni: a squeegee with a towel attached located in the milk house. After skating, visitors are asked to fill three 5-gallon pails with hot water and mop the ice smooth. The rink is open through the winter months, as long as it stays cold. “If people come and the ice is mushy, please stay off,” Hulett said. The rink is located in the cornfield behind where the farm’s trucks park at Deer Flats Farm, 1290 Vermont Route 30 in West Pawlet. Weekend visitors may park anywhere in the pull-off. On weekdays, visitors may have to move their vehicles to accommodate the farm’s trucks. “We’re eager to make the best of these cold winter months,” said Hulett. They ask visitors to pick up after themselves, be careful, and have fun. “We look forward to having some good times with lots of good friends on the ice this winter!”

High-intensity floodlight in Poultney is a nuisance To the editor: The Poultney Unified Bylaws state: “No glare, lights, or reflection shall be permitted which are a nuisance to other property owners or tenants.” On Jan. 12, a portable highintensity floodlight began shining out of a north-facing window of the VEMAS building, the prospective site of a Dollar General, on Poultney’s Beaman Street. Day and night, the light shines directly into the home of Neal and Gail Vreeland. Mrs. Vreeland is disabled. Mr. Vreeland, an attorney, happens to be playing a lead role in opposing placement of a Dollar General in the building, which is owned by Poultney Properties, whose principal is Leonard Knappmiller of Rutland. (Note: The floodlight has been on full-time for over a week, but starting Monday, the light has been on only at night.) Mr. Knappmiller has appealed the Town of Poultney’s denial of a zoning permit for his project to the Vermont Superior Court. Mr. Vreeland has asked that court to order Mr. Knappmiller to end this harassment-by-floodlight. He has also approached Mr. Knappmiller’s attorneys to

prevail on their client to remove the floodlight. Through his attorneys, Mr. Knappmiller has responded that the floodlight is a security measure. However, the Vreeland property is only one of four lots abutting the VEMAS property on that side, and none of the others have a floodlight targeting their homes. As if to buttress this specious security argument, additional floodlights have appeared on the building’s opposite side. One of them is now shining into bedrooms on the far side of Main Street, 100 yards away. Last August, Mr. Knappmiller wrote to Poultney residents seeking support for zoning changes to expedite his Dollar General project. That letter began, “Dear Poultney neighbor.” Shining a floodlight into a “neighbor’s” bedroom is anything but neighborly: It is malicious intimidation. The Vreelands deserve neighborly treatment. So do the property’s other “neighbors” and all of our fellow Poultney residents. Mr. Knappmiller must honor that standard. Poultney residents: Marcia Angermann Kate Arnold Diane Bargiel

Granville First Friday to feature elevators, art By Jared Stamm February’s First Friday celebration will offer an intriguing look at the history of elevators in celebration of the installation of the new elevator at the Pember Library and Museum, as well as an opening reception at the Slate Valley Museum for “Artists of the Slate Valley,” a student art show with works inspired by slate and the Slate Valley from area elementary and high school students. The multimedia presentation on elevators by Rob McGuire and Gigi Zeitler at the Pember will feature “video, photographs, elevator music, a LEGO model of the Pember with the new elevator addition, refreshments and other surprises,” said Zeitler. “People have been using elevators of all types for a very long time,” said Zeitler. The presentation will describe the use of elevators throughout history, from Archimedes’ screw used to transport water and other materials and which may have been used to irrigate the Hanging Gardens of Babylon; to Otis’s safety mechanism that made the idea of an elevator palatable to the gener-

al public; to the paternoster, a series of open compartments on a chain that moves slowly and continuously both up and down.
