Jonathan Holton, a soldier in the Battle of Bennington. There was a time when the idea of writing about history didn’t exist. Professor Chaplin will describe how two Greeks, Herodotus and Thucydides, conceived of history in the sense of writing a narration of past events. Educated at Brown, Oxford and Princeton, Chaplin shares the teaching of Greek and Latin with her departmental colleagues in the classics department at Middlebury and has responsibility for the ancient history curriculum, offering courses on the Greek and Roman worlds.
