Since its publication two centuries ago, Mary Shelley’s “Frankenstein” has allowed each generation to find within it a reflection of their current hopes and fears. Over time, the novel has been read as a commentary on such issues as slavery, women’s rights, imperialism, Freudian psychology, education, gay identity and, of course, the perils and promise of scientific advances. Cost: $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Information/registration: 802-867-0111; www.greenmtnacademy.org. Burr and Burton Academy, 57 Seminary Ave, Manchester, Vt.

WEDNESDAY Lecture Middlebury College professor Jane Chaplin will discuss how historical writing began in a talk at Rutland Free Library on Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. “The Invention of History” is part of the Vermont Humanities Council’s First Wednesdays lecture series and is free and open to the public. There was a time when the idea of writing about history didn’t exist. Professor Chaplin will describe how two Greeks, Herodotus and Thucydides, conceived of history in the sense of writing a narration of past events. Educated at Brown, Oxford and Princeton, Chaplin shares the teaching of Greek and Latin with her departmental colleagues in the classics department at Middlebury and has responsibility for the ancient history curriculum, offering courses on the Greek and Roman worlds. Her area of specialization is classical historiography, especially the Roman historian Livy, on whom she has produced three books. This lecture is free and open to the public.
