Bob Williams of Williams Hardware invites you to check out his money-saving True Value Hardware sale circular inside.

Poultney will feel the loss of Green Mountain College By Matthew Saari “A whole college not being there will create a black hole.” Those are the words of a Poultney, Vermont resident who wished to remain anonymous, regarding the impact Green Mountain College’s closure will have on the community. Poultney’s businesses and residents are still coming to terms with the news, announced by the college’s president and Board of Trustees last Wednesday. Bob Williams, owner of Williams’

Loss Continued from front page dents perusing Williams’ wares either. During the summers the college was home to a Middlebury College Language Arts program, which brought about 300 students to the community, Williams estimated. “I had signs all over my store in all four languages,” Williams said. The closure will hit Williams doubly so because in addition to owning the hardware store he is landlord to five apartments – 80 percent of which are rented to college students. As residents absorb the news, the “black hole” only gets larger. Williams pointed out his business will be negatively impacted not only by the students’ departure but by the absence of the college’s 150 employees, many of whom live in the Poultney area. “They’re probably going to have to move out of town to find a job,” Williams said, noting that he doesn’t expect much business from former employees this summer in the wake of being unemployed. “Unless they’re going to paint [their home] to sell it,” he added. Another Main Street business which will be reeling from the closure for months to come is Perry’s Main Street Eatery. “I do get a lot of business from the college,” said owner

Luckily the college’s formal announcement of its impending closure last Wednesday was not a big surprise for the Munros. “We’ve seen this coming for quite some time,” said Munro. “We have been watching and waiting and pacing for months.” Of notable concern, he said, is the immediate projected loss of his wife’s income. “In the short term, it’s nothing catastrophic. We’ll be okay,” Munro said, citing his job in the solar industry. “We are very concerned about what it will mean for the future of Poultney.” The Munros plan to stay in Poultney, as they have three sons and they like the elementary school two of their boys attend. “It doesn’t make sense to jump ship irrationally just because of the announcement,” said Munro. “I am concerned about the future ability to sell our home, if we want or need to relocate,” he said. Munro described the college as “an anchor” of Poultney, a small town with a population of about 1,600. “It’s always felt like a bit of a safety net in terms of the values of the homes in the area,” he said. “The thought of the college not being around leaves a lot to be concerned about in terms of why people would be interested in moving to and buying homes in Poultney if there wasn’t

Donna Perry, estimating that 20-30 percent of her business is derived from college kids. Perry fondly recalled that the college students were avid breakfast eaters, frequenting her eatery after a long night, perhaps to craft their own, unique breakfast sandwiches. “I’ll have to figure it out when the time comes,” Perry said when asked how she will recover from such a significant hit. “This is going to impact it a bit.” For Perry, the “black hole” isn’t solely caused by Green Mountain College’s closure, but rather amplified by it; more a barrage of economic and commerce hits to the Vermont community. In addition to the college’s closing, Perry noted Poultney has lost a bank, drug store, discount store and gas station, all of which now stand vacant. “What’s going to be the draw for people to come to town?” Perry asked. “It’s sad we’ve lost so much in town.” Like Williams, Perry is lamenting the loss of Green Mountain’s faculty, many of whom have patronized her business since it opened 22 years ago. Poultney Selectboard chairman Jeff King echoed Williams and Perry’s sentiments. “There are a lot of people angry Green Mountain College is closing and nervous about what’s going to happen to Poultney,” he said. The closure is particularly bitter for King, who feels that

the state government and legislature is ignoring the needs of southwestern rural Vermont. “Our downtowns are dying – what’s the state going to go to help us,” he said, noting if General Electric in Rutland was on the verge of closing, the governor and state representatives would flock to the city, hunting for means to keep the business open. To combat the “black hole,” King said he is starting a plan to coordinate with local and regional planning commissions, other town governments, chambers of commerce and non-profit organizations to plan out the future of Poultney – and other local communities – in the face of increasingly common vacant Main Streets. “We’ve got some work to do,” said King. On Monday, Green Mountain College president Robert Allen addressed the Poultney Selectboard. King said the board and public were informed of the decisions leading up to the closure announcement and that Allen is in the process of courting various colleges – both within the U.S. and internationally – in an effort to fill the campus. Despite Allen’s assurances, King said he will still be working locally to ensure Poultney doesn’t stumble following Green Mountain College’s departure. “What if they don’t work?” King asked of the college talks.

that employment opportunity at the end of the main street.” Added Munro: “It’s hard to see a world in which the college closing would make any of our homes more valuable. This summer, if the college goes out, somebody is going to be hard-pressed to see the same value in our little town that they may have when it was still up and running.” Munro moved to Poultney from the Bay Area in California to attend Green Mountain College. The small class sizes, sustainability mission and location amidst Vermont’s Green Mountains attracted him to the area. He graduated in 2004 with a selfdesigned degree of Bachelor of Arts in Renewable Energy Applications. Munro had a hand in building solar and wind installations on the college’s campus. He and his children walk the grounds regularly. “The farm … they love it down there,” he said. Munro described his reaction as being in the “halfangry, half-hopeful stage of grief.” “It’s not such a shock, just a realization of the sadness and what it means for a lot of people who work and live in the area,” he said. Munro expressed concern about the impact of the closing on the many “alreadystruggling businesses.” He and his family already cross the border to Granville to go to the supermarket, enjoy Chinese food and holiday celebrations. They go to Fair Haven to shop for clothing. “Poultney has got to figure out how to get back on the

map, even if the college doesn’t come back or if it does in some other form,” he said. “In the next few years, it’s going to get a little ugly and sad. Faculty are going to have to move, which means families pull out of schools and businesses suffering more than they already are.” “I don’t know what’s going to happen,” said Alan Gombosi, owner at NorthLand Real Estate in Poultney. Green Mountain’s closing has further complicated Gombosi’s job of selling homes in Poultney, an alreadydifficult market with empty storefronts on Main Street and the loss of its pharmacy and more recently a bank. “It doesn’t help the image of the town,” he said. “Everyone that ever ventured down Main Street that was new to the town always remarked how nice it was to have a college in town. Buyers like the idea of a small college town.” “We are very sad to see it go,” said Gombosi “We’ve lost, doggone it.” Gombosi said he didn’t know how many Green Mountain professors and employees own homes locally. He said in the last five to seven years, many of the incoming professors preferred renting. “The professors … my guess would be they will probably be looking for other jobs elsewhere,” he said. Two professors have already inquired about selling their homes with Gombosi’s agency. “One is listed and the other they will be listing,” he said.

Working to prevent suicide among veterans To the editor: Suicide is a national public health issue that affects communities everywhere. That’s why the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has adopted a broad public health approach with an emphasis on comprehensive, communitybased engagement. All of our nation’s health systems and communities must work collectively to reduce suicide rates using the best available information and practices. Coordinated effort at the federal, state and local levels is key to preventing suicide. Each community across the country plays a role in supporting veterans. The VA’s suicide prevention efforts are to equip communities to help veterans get the right care, whenever

and wherever they need it. This means using suicide prevention approaches that cut through all sectors in which veterans interact, such as faith communities, employers, schools, state and local leaders, medical professional, criminal justice officials and many other stakeholders. Put simply, VA must ensure suicide prevention is a part of every aspect of veterans’ lives, not just their interactions with VA. White River Junction VA Medical Center plans to work strategically with community partners this year to think creatively to reach more and save more lives. There was a time when the idea of writing about history didn’t exist. Professor Chaplin will describe how two Greeks, Herodotus and Thucydides, conceived of history in the sense of writing a narration of past events. Educated at Brown, Oxford, and Princeton, Jane Chaplin shares the teaching of Greek and Latin with her departmental colleagues in the classics department at Middlebury and has responsibility for the ancient history curriculum, offering courses on the Greek

THE DURKEE AGENCY INSURANCE FOR... Home, Auto, Business, Farm & More Planning FOR... Life Insurance, Disability Insurance, Annuities, IRA’s & More.

651 Route 22A N, Fair Haven, VT (802) 265-3439 www.durkeeinsurance.com • NEVER GO OUT ON THE ICE ALONE! Bring a buddy and keep a distance apart. This way, if one falls through, the other can go for help or attempt a rescue. • CARRY SURVIVAL EQUIPMENT! Carry a length of rope & ice picks to pull yourself up onto the ice. • DO NOT DRIVE ON THE ICE But if you must, unbuckle your seat belt and roll down the window. It will be easier to exit the vehicle should it go through the ice. • GIVE YOURSELF TIME If snowmobiling at night. Don’t “out drive” your headlight spot and avoid open water, pressure cracks and patches of weak ice. • AVOID ALCOHOL! Drinking increases your chances for hypothermia, impairs your judgment & slows your reaction time. • IF YOU FALL THOUGH THE ICE… TRY NOT TO PANIC! • Remove extraneous objects that weigh you down • Begin kicking your feet to bring your body horizontal, then slowly pull yourself along the ice until you are out of the hole. Once on the ice, DO NOT STAND UP, but roll or crawl away from the hole heading back to shore. Don’t stand up until the hole is well behind you. • If you can’t pull yourself out within 10 minutes, cease all attempts in order to conserve body heat. Get as much of your body out of the water as possible.
