Poultney gears up for Great Backyard Bird Count  Special information session Wednesday By Jared Stamm The Great Backyard Bird Count was launched in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society as the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and to display results in near real-time. Today more than 160,000

people around the world join the four-day count each February to create an annual snapshot of the distribution and abundance of birds. This year’s count is set for Friday, Feb. 15 through Monday, Feb. 18. “The lovely thing about the count is anyone can do it over a period of days, and you can do it as many times as you like. And it doesn’t have to be in your backyard,” said Poultney

resident and Rutland County Audubon Society vice president Kathleen Guinness. She emphasized: “You only have to identify the birds you know. If you see one you don’t know, you don’t have to look it up. If you can’t identify it, just don’t include it in your count.” The annual count provides important data on migration patterns, how bird diseases are

Birds Continued from front page affecting birds in different regions, diversity of species, how weather patterns and climate change are influencing bird populations and more. Once you’ve counted your birds, you can enter your numbers at the Great Backyard Bird Count website or through a mobile app on your phone. Guinness and Sandra Duling, the society’s membership chair, both live in Poultney and are presenting an information session on the bird count at the Poultney Public Library on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m. “This is the first time we’ve given this talk at the library,” Guinness said. After last year’s Christmas Bird Count - a more specific bird count Guinness coordinated that took place in a 7.5-mile radius from the falls in Center Rutland - Guinness and Duling heard from Poultney feeder watchers who felt left out. “They wanted to participate in something closer to home,” Guinness said. “The Great Backyard Bird Count is perfect for them.” Wednesday’s presentation at the library will include two components: a summary of the logistics of the count and how to go online to enter numbers of the birds seen, and then a description of the kinds of birds participants are likely to spy at their feeders or wherever they watch birds in Poultney.

Frosty Continued from front page fish on the boards first. Prizes consist of cash for each fish category as well as a raffle drawing. Raffle tickets will be on sale all day at derby headquarters until 4 p.m. Rules and cash prize distribution examples are available

Species Poultney residents are likely to see include chickadees, juncos, blue jays, sparrows, nuthatches and cardinals. “You might see a goldencrowned kinglet, though not necessarily at your feeder. They might be in low brush or trees,” said Guinness. Participants may also see a golden eagle or, on Main Street in Poultney, pine grosbeaks, which have been eating the fruit off the ornamental crabapples lining the street. Counts of birds vary from year to year, depending on many factors. “If the acorn count is down, you don’t see as many blue jays,” said Guinness. “This year, we’re not seeing as many juncos as normal, and we don’t know why that is.” And last year chickadee numbers were down. “An ornithologist in our group wondered whether use of pesticides was to blame.” But the chickadee count seems to be up again, she said. “A lot of people never saw red-bellied woodpeckers at their feeders when they were growing up,” Guinness said. “However, because the climate is changing, they’ve been coming farther north. People are thrilled to see them now.” Said Guinness: “I think people want a chance to share what they see at their feeders. I hope they’ll join us.” The free information session on the Great Backyard Bird Count is Wednesday, Feb. 13, from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Poultney Public Library, 205 Main Street in Poultney. For more information, call 802-287-5556. at ticket sale locations. Tickets are available at Tom’s Bait and Tackle on Route 4A in Castleton; the East Poultney General Store On the Green in Poultney; The Reel Angler on Depot Street in Manchester; Otto’s Cones Point General Store on Route 30 in Poultney; and EZ Marine Inc. on West Lake Road in Wells. Jane Austen discussion

802-287-4016 parkerwaterwells.com

Vermont Humanities will present “Why Are We Still Reading Jane Austen?” a lecture by novelist Deborah Lee Luskin at The Left Bank in North Bennington on Thursday, Feb. 14 at 6 p.m. Jane Austen lived a short, quiet life in southern England, during which she wrote six novels about young women. Two hundred years later, how do we account for the continuing global appeal of these drawing room dramas among readers and moviegoers? Luskin discusses how Austen’s novels demonstrate the importance of reading closely, of tempering faceto-face flirtation with the sober reflection of prose, and – most of all – of reading fiction, especially Jane Austen’s own. This lecture is free and open to the public. Information: Jennie Rozycki at 802-447-7121. The Left Bank, 5 Bank St., North Bennington, Vermont.

Rotary Valentine’s Day social at Duffy home in Poultney Poultney Rotary hosts a “We Love Our Community” social on Saturday, Feb. 16, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the home of Rotarians Joe and Margaret Duffy in Poultney. The Duffys invite members of the community to “fall in love with the Rotary” at this social and learn about the service organization. Light refreshments will be served. “All are welcome to join us in our home to learn about the Poultney Rotary. We are passionate about serving our community, and we are looking for others who would like to join us,” said club president Joe Duffy. The Poultney Rotary has created a list of ten reasons to fall in love with Rotary, whose motto is “Service Above Self.” Friendship: In an increasingly complex world, Rotary provides one of the most basic human needs: the need for friendship and fellowship. It is one of two reasons why Rotary began in 1905. The Poultney chapter has been serving the community for over 90 years. Business development: The second reason Rotary began was for business development. Everyone needs to network. Rotary is a cross section of every business community. Its members come from all walks of life. Rotarians help each other and collectively help others. Personal growth and development: Membership in Rotary continues one’s growth and education in human relations and personal development. Citizenship in the community: Membership in a Rotary club makes one a better community citizen. The average Rotary club consists of the most active citizens of any community. Continuing education: Each week at Rotary is a program designed to keep one informed about what is going on in the community, the nation and the world. Each meeting provides an opportunity to listen to different speakers and a variety of timely topics. Fun: Rotary is a lot of fun. Meetings, club projects, social activities and service are all fun. Citizenship in the world: Every Rotarian is a global citizen and wears a pin that says “Rotary International.” Few places on earth do not have a Rotary club. Every Rotarian is welcome and encouraged to attend any of the 29,000 clubs in 194 nations and geographical regions. This means instant friends in both one’s own community and in the world community.

Prestige: Rotary members are prominent leaders of business, the professions, art, government, sports, military, religion and all disciplines. Rotary is the oldest and most prestigious service club in the world. Its ranks include executives, managers, and professionals – people who make decisions and influence policy Absence of an “official creed”: Rotary has no secret handshake, no secret policy, no official creed and no secret meetings or rituals. It is an open society of men and women who simply believe in helping others. Opportunity to serve: Rotary is a service club. Its business is mankind. Its product is service. Rotarians provide community service to both local and international communities. This is perhaps the best reason for becoming a Rotarian: the chance to do something for somebody else and to gain the self-fulfillment that comes in the process and return of that satisfaction to oneself.
