Poultney is a great place to live! From swimming in Lake St. Catherine to biking down the Slate Valley Trails, from shopping historic downtown Poultney to visiting the wonderful museums in beautiful East Poultney, our community has a lot to offer. That is why we are proud to once again publish the Poultney Community Guide and deliver it free of charge to all the homes and businesses in our community. This edition is packed with information on all aspects of living in the town of Poultney: from school news to church times, from community organizations to profiles of local public service organizations - and much, much more. Also, this edition would not have been possible without the support of our local officials, especially Poultney Town/Village Manager Paul Donaldson and his staff. We hope you enjoy this special publication and find it useful and will keep it handy throughout the year for quick and easy reference right alongside your 2019 Lakes Region Phone Book! Poultney Profile Downtown Revitalization continues The Poultney Downtown Revitalization Committee (PDRC) was established as a not-for-profit corporation in 2002 after being recognized by the State of Vermont as the local arm of the State’s “designated downtowns” program. Today, only 23 of Vermont’s 237 towns share this designation. As a result, both the Town and Poultney’s business owners and operators within the downtown area are eligible for tax credits, financial assistance and expert advice in evaluating options and funding improvements that have town-wide benefit. PDRC’s mission reflects a special emphasis on Poultney’s downtown because a vibrant commercial center is an essential aspect of a community that appeals to residents and visitors alike. At the same time, the scope of committee activities extends beyond the downtown area to where PDRC sees opportunity consistent with the means to improve the resi-
dential and business prospects of all Poultney citizens. PDRC is a volunteer organization that draws on community members to help identify priorities, initiate and execute programs related to them and coordinate committee efforts with the town’s ambitions. Activities generally fall into three broad areas shown below, with examPhoto by Alan Nyiri ples of where PDRC has recently An aerial view of downtown Poultney played a beneficial • Sidewalks and crossrole: walks Contributing to the • New water lines launch of new organiza• Poultney Public Library tions and attractions: • Stone Valley Quarry Park expansion • Slate Valley Bike Trail Enhancing the appeal of • Stone Valley Arts Center downtown: • Seasonal flowers in sumSecuring state funding mer for the town’s infrastruc• Holiday lights and decoture improvements:

In addition, PDRC expects to make significant strides in other arenas, including offering more support to existing business, building greater awareness of Poultney’s recreational and civic assets, and giving assistance to new business and community initiatives in all parts of town. All of PDRC’s activities are underwritten both by the generosity of individuals who make tax-deductible donations to support the work of the committee and by annual appropriations from the Town and Village of Poultney. PDRC is grateful for this support. Together, we are making a difference in building a bright future for our town. For more information, contact PDRC’s president Lara Bitler at 287-5277.

Poultney profiles Poultney Public Librar y offers programs and events On February 4, 1895, Mr. F.M. Rood and Mr. A.B. Carrigan, both of Poultney, discussed the lack of a library in town as they rode to Hampton, New York. This conversation led to discussion with other residents, several meetings and much debate. At last it was decided that Poultney would open a Free Library, to be supported by a tax of 8¢ per $100 of the Grand List, which is the aggregate valuation of taxable property. Less than four months later, on June 1, 1895, the Poultney Public Library opened and began serving the Poultney community. The first Poultney Public Library Board of Trustees was elected on March 5, 1895. They wasted no time, holding its first meeting two days later on March 7. In less than three months the board purchased and solicited donations of books and furniture, secured the lower rooms of the Jerry Lewis House to house the new library, and hired a librarian and assistant librarian.
The Poultney Public Library book sale draws readers from all over the area. Early records show that the Poultney Public Library owned 700 books, 65 of which were checked out on the first day the library was open! A list of donations made to the new library includes portraits of George and Martha Washington, which were given to the library in 1895 by Mrs. M.T.
Lynde and that still hang in the library today. One hundred twenty-four years and 16 librarians later, the Poultney Public Library continues to serve the people of Poultney and the surrounding towns. The library’s collection of books has grown to 14,283 and also includes 657 audiobooks and
3,341 DVDs. Library card holders can check out snowshoes, bicycles, lawn games and more. Poultney residents may borrow passes for free or discounted admission to state parks, historical sites and several Vermont museums. The Poultney Public Library also offers a wide array of programs and events throughout the year. We sincerely hope that Mr. Rood and Mr. Carrigan would be proud of the vital community library that continues to grow from their passing conversation. The Poultney Public Library offers free membership to residents of Poultney and the surrounding communities. For more information about the library and its services stop by and visit the library at 205 Main Street, call 2875556, or email ppl5556@ yahoo.com. Regular library hours are Monday and Friday, 10 a.m.5 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, noon-7 p.m.; Saturday, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.

Poultney profiles P.E.S. meeting the needs of all children By Kristen Caliguiri, Principal Poultney Elementary School Poultney Elementary School is privileged to work with children as they learn and grow socially, emotionally and academically. The school has 22 educators and 11 instructional assistants, in addition to school counselors and nurses, who function in various capacities to support students in meeting expectations that are becoming ever more rigorous and demanding. Through teamwork and dedication, Poultney Elementary School persists in embracing a vision that recognizes and respects all children for who they are and strives to assist them in achieving their goals and reaching their fullest potential. As needs of children are ever changing, the school is fortunate to have the support of local businesses and organizations and neighboring colleges. Because the school is now part of the Greater Rutland County Supervisory Union, it has been participating in professional development around the student-centered learning model, which encourages students to have a voice and
choice in their education. This model includes project-based learning and formative assessment measures to enable students to set goals and demonstrate knowledge and understanding in multiple ways. Teachers work in professional learning community groups to assist in promoting schoolwide progress, which includes the review of math and literacy instruction and assessments, as well as investigating ways to address the social and emotional needs of children. Due to the expectations and rigor that come with the Common Core State Standards, as well as in embracing student self-direction, teachers have been diligent in collecting resources to be integrated into classroom practices that include hands-on and technology-based activities, all of which are research-based. In addition, Poultney Elementary School students are fortunate to have iPads, laptops and Chromebooks, as well as a computer lab, by which to offer many online programs to challenge and support students in their skill acquisition. These activities occur on an individual basis, as well as in small and whole groups; both within and outside of the classroom setting. As students take charge of their learning, school staff are able to encourage independence and foster leadership beginning in the early grades. Fitness activities are supported by the school’s climbing wall and participation in Walk, Bike and Roll to School events, just some of the ways students are inspired to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The school continues to participate in the Pico Ski and Snowboard Program, and 36 percent of Poultney Elementary School students travel on Friday afternoons to the mountain. Other off-site offerings include ice skating at Spartan Arena and bowling at Granville Lanes. In addition, children remain at school

exploring a variety of activities such as skating, MakerSpace fun, and Spanish. This six-week experience is just another means of providing students with a multitude of opportunities to enjoy. The school is proud to invite parents and Poultney residents in often for celebrations and student-led assemblies; the annual Veterans Day and Memorial Day ceremonies have become cherished events. VIP luncheons and barbecues as well as volunteering in classrooms are other means for parents to feel welcomed as participants in their child’s learning. School staff continue to be grateful for the support given by the residents of Poultney to their children and their education. Poultney Elementary School has been officially recognized as a Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports (PBIS) school. The tenets of this program will allow for positive learning experiences for students. The school’s highly qualified educators are caring, energetic and committed to excellence and professionalism; there is not a better bunch! Above all else, students know that they are the top priority as they are welcomed with smiles each and every day. As part of the PBIS model, the STAR program is a school-wide behavior system that inspires all students to be safe, trustworthy, accepting and respectful through the use of common expectations and language. Community leaders join the school in recognizing STAR students at assemblies, breakfasts and luncheons as part of efforts to support positive peer relationships. Please stop by Poultney Elementary School. You will be impressed by the school’s warm welcoming staff and students who are polite and eager to tell you about the treasures of their school and their town. Poultney is a great place to be!

As always, the dance party with DJ Saltis was an opportunity for the young and the not-so-young to dance to a collection of everyone’s musical favorites. July 4th food vendors provided hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage, maple products and fully loaded baked potatoes to satisfy everyone’s food fantasies. This year’s traditional fireworks, beginning at dusk, were fabulous thanks to a large private donation matching the town’s annual fireworks appropriation. Independence Day is a long-celebrated tradition in Poultney, and one that folks look forward to all summer long. Local businesses and organizations are always there to support the many activities, and Main Street comes alive with crowds of smiling faces donned in red, white and blue. The theme varies, but the attendance never falters. Rain or shine, the town comes out to have a great time! Join us this year, and every year, and you will never be disappointed! This summer’s planning for the July 4th festivities has just begun. Those wanting to help make this day a special event for everyone should call the Town Office at 287-9751. Poultney profiles Slate Quarry Park to open by end of year The Slate Quarry Park Group, a 501(c)3 incorporated in 2016, is close to making the dream of a park at 76 Main Street in Poultney a reality by the end of 2019. The idea of a park in Poultney was first envisioned in the 2002 Rural Development workshops supervised by Paul Costello. Over 100 Poultney residents met for a weekend and identified a park or gathering place for young and old as a first priority for the town. It was subsequently included in the town plan, and in 2013 Poultney 2020, an organization spearheaded by Green Mountain College, identified 76 Main Street as the location for the park. Then in 2015, while carving a slate stone sentinel for the gateway installations at Poultney’s main intersection, Kerry O. Furlani, inspired by interactions with townspeople and especially those with ties to the quarries, reanimated the vision of a park dedicated to the historical importance of the industry and built with slate throughout. With that the Slate Quarry Park Group was born. With foundational donations by three slate quarry owners, the nonprofit organization was able to negotiate a land purchase agreement for the property, a tiny sliver of land between the PoultneyFair Haven Auto Parts store and the Schoolhouse Apartments. Poultney profiles Stone Valley Arts at Fox Hill Stone Valley Arts (SVA) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit community arts center serving Poultney and the surrounding communities. Its mission is to offer a broad range of educational opportunities and quality programming in the literary, performing and visual arts. Since its inception in 2012, Stone Valley Arts has grown steadily. SVA creates a meaningful point of contact between artists and the community, collaborating with local civic organizations, such as the Poultney Downtown Revitalization Committee and Poultney Rotary, and other nonprofit groups and academic institutions, including the Poultney High School, LiHigh School and Green Mountain College. SVA has brought people together and formed communities of artists, dancers, musicians, writers and volunteers that did not exist previously. Many of these folks had never been inside the old stone church to which SVA moved in 2018 and had never met, though they had lived in close proximity for decades. The story of SVA’s building is rich in history. In 1822, people gathered for the dedication of the stone meeting house on the hill, built with blocks of limestone hauled by oxcart from as far away as Whitehall and Fort Ticonderoga. The first Methodist Church in the state of Vermont occupied the building, until the Millerites began using it

After the Masons were no longer holding regular meetings, they held on to the building until selling it in 2007 to Rita Fuchsberg and Irene Minkoff. Although the Masons might have sold it to a private buyer, they were happy with the sisters’ dream to convert this historic landmark into a center for the arts. In 2014, the sisters generously bequeathed the building to the Preservation Trust of Vermont, under the guidance of Paul Bruhn. Ownership of the property was transferred to SVA in March 2018 with the stipulation that this major gift to the town of Poultney be used as a community art center. SVA’s new location on a hill across from Poultney High School offers a spacious art gallery and dance studio as well as spaces for rehearsal, performance and yoga. SVA offers a diverse
schedule of dance and music concerts, educational lectures, gallery exhibits, literary and poetry events theatrical productions. It also features classes and workshops across all art media for children, teens and adults. Some of its recent offerings for children have been Artists and Their Animal Muses (K-6th grade), Creative Movement (ages 4-6 and ages 7-10), Exploring Portraits (K-6th grade), and Meet Matisse (K-6th grade). Programs for adults have included Art Insights (critique), Dance (ballet, dance improvisation, modern and swing dance), Drawing in Community, Figure Drawing, Jazz Ensemble, Literary Open Mic, Meditation, Men’s Choir, Poetry Salon, Script Writing and Yoga. Scholarships are always available for classes and workshops. Stone Valley Arts continues to work toward the goals and objectives of the Poultney Town Plan in the following ways: addressing the lack of public gathering spaces; creating local recre-

Appointed executive director in 2019, Erika Lawlor Schmidt has served on the SVA board since 2013 and offers 30 years’ experience in leading and managing nonprofit art organizations. She is responsible for the curation, coordination and planning of art exhibits, educational programming and workshops, performances and special festival events. The 2019 gallery season opens with “Near to Here” featuring the photographic work of local art luminaries Chuck Helfer and Denise La Tendre, followed by an International Collage Exhibition that will include collage artists working in Vermont. Poultney profiles man/artists working in stone, ceramics, wood and natural materials, along with a special art show for local children to share art and poetry that explores the natural world of plants, insects, and animals. In September, the Audubon Society of Rutland County is slated for an exhibit that celebrates the importance and beauty of birds. Workshops and lectures will be offered in conjunction with every art exhibit. Several formal and informal concerts and dance events also are scheduled, including a community
swing dance in the spring, a performance of Robert Schumann’s “Frauenliebe und -leben” for voice and piano, a performance by Vital Spark Performance Group and Theater in the Woods, and a brand-new event, PLATFORM VERMONT: art, fashion, film and performance slated for early October that will bring SVA to the center of the contemporary art scene. There will be numerous classes offered this coming year with added lectures on topics, including art therapy, culinary arts and why the arts matter.
While arts programming is its primary mission, SVA has also taken on the challenge of rehabbing and preserving its historic building. A conditions assessment conducted by the Preservation Trust of Vermont notes the “robust construction and overall good condition,” but also provides a detailed report of work needed. Repairs and ongoing stewardship of this significant historic resource will require a great deal of fundraising in the form of grants and private donations as well as thousands of volunteer hours.
Everyone who has a skill can help with administration, bookkeeping, building and grounds maintenance and repairs (carpentry, gardening, masonry, mowing, painting, tree service), contractor oversight, grant writing and more. SVA is your community arts center, and everyone is welcome to get involved. Come to play in the arts, and come to work, too! Together we can create a lasting public good that Poultney will be proud of for generations to come. Contact SVA at stonevalleyartscenter@gmail.com.

Poultney profiles Chamber of Commerce guides business community The Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce was founded 42 years ago on May 17, 1977. A nonprofit organization, its purpose is “…to guide, inspire and promote the best interests of the business and professional members of the area, and to enhance the economic, cultural, educational and recreational opportunities of its citizens.” The chamber strives to achieve these objectives through information-sharing, networking and events
as well as through its membership meetings, membership newsletters, website, marketing and press releases. In addition to its website on which members can post events, members may link their business website and add tags. The chamber also has a Facebook page. The chamber works to keep members informed of federal and Vermont legislative changes that affect Vermont businesses. It offers a dental, vision and hospitalization insurance plan to its member busi-
nesses. In addition, employees of the chamber’s member businesses may purchase the insurance even if their employer elects not to. All businesses, firms, partnerships and/or organizations interested in the stated purposes of the chamber are eligible to be a member. Activities of the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce are geared to bring people into the region for a fun and entertaining time while also promoting
member businesses. Throughout its 42 years, the chamber has enjoyed participation of many volunteers who have helped it to grow – as officers and as members of its board of directors who oversee the day-to-day business of the organization, as well as those who have been committee and event organizers and participants. Through the dedication and help of these volunteers, the chamber continues to host many events, current and traditional.

Poultney profiles Poultney High School: Small in size, big in spirit By Principal Joe DeBonis, Jr. Poultney High School (PHS) is a grade 7 through 12 school of about 200 students whose mission for its students is to “question, think, solve and connect to create your own path.” PHS strives to provide a developmentally appropriate program of studies for all students. The school has high expectations for its students with graduation requirements some of the most rigorous in Rutland County. Students must complete 28 credits and a personal development collection that demonstrates how they have met all of Vermont’s Vital Results. The school has begun a new partnership with West Rutland and Proctor as the Quarry Valley District, part of the newly formed Greater Rutland County Supervisory Union. Through Act 46, the towns voted to merge their districts, and 2019 is the first year of the merger between the towns. The merge will provide many new opportunities for students. Because of the school’s small size, PHS is able to develop relationships with students that allow customized learning to meet their needs and interests. Whether a student is considering college, the military or employment after high school, PHS equips them with the knowledge and skills needed to be successful.
Poultney High School PHS views the education of its students as a partnership and strives to work closely with families. Parents and guardians have the ability to check their student’s academic progress as often as they like through a parent portal accessible on the PHS website, where they and their students are able to track class assignments, tests, grades and attendance. PHS offers Advanced Placement courses, a wide variety of electives, online high school courses through the VHS Collaborative, and students can earn dual high school/ college credits on the PHS campus, taught by PHS teachers, through the Vermont Dual Enrollment Program. PHS students may use vouchers to take up to two

college courses at 19 participating Vermont colleges during their junior and senior years. PHS students may also participate in the Early College Program, spending their senior year as a full-time college student at Castleton University or another participating Vermont College. PHS offers work experience credit, internships and independent study courses to provide opportunities for all learning styles. PHS strives to develop well-rounded students. Through its art, drama and music programs, students can explore their talents and pursue their passions. Students may participate in more than 10 clubs as well, including Model Congress, Art Club, Upward Bound, Rotary Interact Club, VSAC Gear Up and Student
Council. PHS also has memberships in the National Honor Society, the National Art Honor Society, and the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Poultney High School has a long history of success in interscholastic sports. It offers a variety of sports activities for students at every grade level, including baseball, basketball, fall and winter cheerleading, cross country, football, soccer and softball. PHS students also participate in other sports, such as field hockey, ice hockey, track and field and wrestling, through member-to-member programs with other schools. While Poultney High School competes against much larger schools, it lives up to its motto: Small in Size, Big in Spirit.

The society seeks interested volunteers and organizational partners to help with a wide range of initiatives, such as research, cataloguing collections, docenting, program planning, exhibits and other projects. Poultney profiles the East Poultney Schoolhouse on the third Sunday of every other month, beginning in January, from 2-4 p.m. The society owns and cares for three historic buildings on the green in East Poultney. These museums house curated exhibits, with several first launched in 2018 thanks to the efforts of trustees Andrea Mott, Krista Rupe, and Janet Greenwood among others. Volunteer docents open the museums free to the public on Sundays from 1-4 p.m., July-September. The East Poultney Schoolhouse is open for special programming, for example, on the Saturday of Maplefest weekend, March 23, 2019, when visitors can see the primary classroom in the 1896 schoolhouse. The classroom was restored to its original turn-of-the century beauty during the summer of 2018, as part of a long-term Poultney Historical Society project. Leonard Spencer of Cabot, Vermont, an expert on Victorian era paints and building restoration, guided this project. For the interior work, Spencer analyzed paint chips from the classroom and found several shades of green underneath the most recent white. He also determined that the window sashes and surrounding trim had been “faux grained” originally. Faux wood grain is an artistic technique that was used in the 19th century to imitate the look of natural wood. Spencer used an early
Students view displays and photographs at the East Poultney Schoolhouse photo of the schoolroom as a guide to the relative dark and light paint scheme of the room. He and his team spent many hours painting and restoring the faux grain woodwork in June and July, giving the room a deeper and warmer look. In preparation for the restoration work, old pegboard used formerly to display artifacts was removed, revealing a full wall of chalkboards, hidden for decades, along the south and west walls of the room. The upper “valance” of the room above the windows was painted a darker green, the picture rail beige, and the walls a light green. A corkboard, which was also part of the original room, was recovered with burlap in a natural shade. Many visitors have marveled at the change in the room. The classroom served students as recently as the 1960s, but they had never seen the room in its

original form. At the same time, the exhibits in the room were revamped, partly to commemorate last summer’s East Poultney Day theme of “Poultney on the Move for Two and Half Centuries.” “Milt’s Poultney,” a working D&H Railway model train and layout built by Milt McWithey, which depicts Poultney in the 1920s, is against the south wall of the classroom under a series of historic transportation-related photographic reproductions that allow visitors to ponder the changes in transportation that have occurred over the past century. A set of old school desks from various eras and other Poultney schoolhouse artifacts are set close to one blackboard. Kitchen gadgets donated by Douglas Langdon on behalf of the late Ann Denis are attractively displayed in
another corner. Ina Smith Johnson, trustee head of the building and grounds committee who directed the restoration, said, “The project is an historical restoration, not just a paint job. It had to conform to the State of Vermont guidelines dealing not only with lead paint hazards, but also with historic preservation standards. Our goal was to recreate as accurately as possible the original color scheme.” She continued, “Schoolchildren must have experienced a sense of beauty and even grandeur as Poultney prospered in the late 19th century largely due to the expansion of the slate industry.” You are invited to visit the society’s Facebook page, Instagram and website for updates and more information on upcoming events or projects. Anyone can become a member of the Poultney Historical Society as an individual, family, or even at a supporting or sustaining level. Become a member or renew your membership, add your name to the mailing list and visit the society’s online store at www. poultneyhistoricalsociety. org where you can view materials available for purchase, such as the popular “Poultney Remembers” 12-month calendars that feature high-quality reproductions of historic photographs from the society’s collection. The 2019 edition is available now. For more information you may also email info@poultneyhistoricalsociety.org.

Poultney profiles Journal Press Building a hub of creativity The Journal Press Building, 188 Main Street in Poultney, has been a hub of creativity since 1908. The old-time printing industry eventually succumbed to the digital revolution, but the building’s role as a center of creativity in the community continues. Now called the Poultney Small Business Center, it is home to a variety of business and educational ventures, most notably providing studio space for a number of artists,
including painters, a book and paper conservator, a slate sculptor, an architect and a photographer. Dick Weis was the first artist to move into the building, establishing a studio on the third floor in 2008. A retired art faculty member from Green Mountain College, he continues working full-time on nuanced color-filled abstract paintings, drawings and traditional portraits in a light-filled studio with southern and western

The skill she has developed through her training with master carvers in England and Wales is reflected in her exquisitely carved letter forms conveying inspirational and thought-provoking messages. Her studio is full of sculpture in a variety of media and beautiful drawings as well.
Photographer Jonathan Taylor has taught at Green Mountain College and Castleton University as well as other institutions around the state. He currently is art instructor at Mill River Union High School. His personal work exploring family, place and space ranges from small intimate views of our landscape, often with social and environmental overtones, to large-scale installations involving perceptions of what it means to be family.
