Brave the cold and snow this weekend and join the fun at the Lake Bomoseen Ice Fishing Derby on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 16 and 17. This year’s derby is the 41st hosted by the Castleton Lion’s Club. Derby organizer John Burke says ice conditions look good, and he anticipates a great derby. He also noted how much ice fishing has changed since he began fishing. “It’s a lot more technical these days with underwater jacks, shanties and so forth.” He laughed. “When I started out, we’d just choose some branches on trees next to the shore and tie our lines to them. When the branches jerked, we’d jump.” More than 450 outdoorsmen and women participate in the derby each year, which awards some $6,000 in cash prizes. The derby begins at 5 a.m. on Saturday and runs until Sunday at 3 p.m. Check-in is at

grew up in Poultney, and two of his dad’s uncles, Bob Owens and John Skovira, were volunteer firemen in the department. “I grew up in Connecticut, but I spent summers in Poultney at my grandmother’s house,” Carmody said. “I remember my uncle John bringing me to the old fire station.” “Those early visits sparked my interest in firefighting,” said Carmody, who is a career firefighter with almost 35 years of service. The equipment donated by Survival Group to the Poultney Fire Department includes five structural fire helmets and 12 pairs of structural fire boots. The helmets retail for $250 each,
and the boots for $350 a pair. Fire equipment is expensive, and national guidelines call for it to be replaced every 10 years. “Gear is constructed of special materials that protect against steam, which can burn, and hazardous materials. Boots have steel toes rated for chainsaw use and provide protection against electricity, too,” Carmody said. Fire gear degrades over time, added Carmody, with exposure to fire and ultraviolet light. The Poultney Fire Department thanked Survival Group on its Facebook page: “All of this new gear will help to keep members in compliant gear. Thanks again to Survival Group, LLC. As well it was a pleasure to catch up on some of the department’s history.” Said Carmody: “I’m very happy to give back to the department.”

Locally, twice-daily trips between Bennington and Great Barrington were available. For only $1.00 for a round-trip plus a chair fee of 25 cents for the rattan chair, riders could “enjoy the opulence of the Berkshire Hills and the Bennington, both dedicated to this service.” For more information, call 802-440-8075. Winter hospice volunteer training in Bennington The Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Southwest Region is providing training for those interested in becoming hospice volunteers on Friday, Feb. 15, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in Bennington. Training is free and open to the public. Pre-registration is required for the training. Once training is complete, assignments and schedules are tailored to the volunteer’s geographic and time commitment preferences. Volunteers must be at least 16 years old and need to pass a background check. No previous hospice and health care experience is required. Hospice volunteers provide comfort and support to patients
facing terminal illness, as well as respite and support to their families. Volunteer training covers the basic principles of hospice, understanding the special needs of patients and their families, effective communication, patient care, pain and symptom management, spiritual caregiving and understanding grief and loss. Hospice volunteers are trained in listening skills, family dynamics and in using appropriate words to comfort patients and their loved ones at the end of life. “Whether someone is interested in providing direct or indirect support, hospice volunteers are an integral part of
the hospice team,” said Mary Pleasant, hospice volunteer coordinator. “Hospice volunteering allows exceptional caring individuals to use their gifts and skills to help provide patients, caregivers and families with the most peaceful and comfortable end-of-life experience possible.” She added, “Not only do volunteers tell us they have a deeper understanding of death and dying, but they also gain an enriched sense of other cultures and beliefs and have an enhanced sense of fulfillment to the community.” For more information or to enroll, call Mary Pleasant at 802-442-0540 or email her at mary.pleasant@vnahsr.org.

In Fair Haven, Scouting offers fun, challenges By Jared Stamm Cubmaster Joe Donaldson has led Fair Haven Cub Scout Pack 18 for five years. As a former scout himself, he recognizes the importance of all the values scouting teaches. “Trustworthiness, loyalty, courtesy and kindness are some of the core values we reinforce in the pack,” he said. “But we also have a lot of fun.” Eighteen boys are in Pack 18 this year. All are from Fair Haven. “We had a few from Castleton last year, but they didn’t return.” Kids who drop out of the pack, Donaldson feels, probably don’t give it enough time. “It’s fun and games, but it’s not all fun and games,” he laughed. “There’s work involved. Lots of nights are serious work, with the boys coming up with ideas of how to go about earning requirements for badges.” “Last year, we took the kids to the local police department to
learn what police in the community do,” said Donaldson. In addition to seeing how a police department works, including getting fingerprinted by a Fair Haven officer, the boys earned a local service badge. A favorite activity of the kids in 2018 was “Get to Know Your Tools.” Parents of each of the boys assembled a set of hand tools for the scouts, and the boys learned how to use all of them. “The boys built a simple step stool. Everything was cut, nailed and screwed together by hand. Den parents helped, and the kids had a great time,” said Donaldson. Parent involvement in the pack is strong. “We’re lucky, because the pack has a lot of support from parents,” said Donaldson. Also important to the pack is their involvement with the local American Legion. Fair Haven Post 49 is the pack’s charter organization.
Fair Haven Pack and Troop 18. On Flag Day the scouts learned about proper flag etiquette and how to retire a flag at the American Legion post. They also helped the legion with its annual Green Up Day activities. A Cub Scout tradition is the Pinewood Derby. Last year,

because there was no districtwide derby, the boys held a pack derby. In addition to the boys of Pack 18, parents, a few Cub Scouts from other packs and Boy Scouts from Troop 18 participated. “We had 40 racers, and the kids created some amazinglooking cars, from chocolate bars to Wii remotes,” Donaldson said. “The process of making the cars teaches the boys how to follow rules and specifications, and then the race is pure fun.” Fair Haven’s Cub Scouts collaborate closely with local Boy Scout Troop 18. “The Boy Scouts are role models for the Cub Scouts. Every one of the boys in the troop has been in Pack 18,” Donaldson said. The pack and troop work together on service projects, fundraising and fun. Last year, the Cub Scouts had a sliding party, and the troop joined in. And an important ceremony at the end of the year is crossing over from Cub to Boy Scouts. Last year, two boys became Boy Scouts at an end-ofseason ceremony at Book Pond. Donaldson’s son and the Boy Scout troop leader’s son both crossed over. The ceremony for each boy takes about five minutes, and once the Cub Scouts have been released by the Cubmaster and parents and crossed over a ceremonial bridge, they are received by the
Boy Scouts, who help them with their new attire. “You’d think the younger kids would get bored watching the ceremony, but they were attentive and quiet and very interested,” said Donaldson. Once they cross over, Fair Haven’s Boy Scouts work on rank and merit badges. Fair Haven Boy Scout Troop 18 currently has six scouts who meet weekly. In 2018, the Boy Scouts hosted the Klondike Derby at Camp Sunrise, attended seasonal camporees and organized community service projects and fundraisers. In July the troop attended scout camp at Mt. Norris scouting reservation and are working hard to fundraise to support a return this summer. Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts are important pathways for kids in Fair Haven. “Through activities and fun, the boys are learning how to be good citizens,” said Donaldson. Fair Haven Boy Scout Troop 18 will hold a bottle drive on Saturday, Feb. 9, in the Fair Haven area. To arrange pickup, call 802-558-6741. Fair Haven Cub Scout Pack 18 meets on Mondays at 6 p.m. at the American Legion Post 49 in Fair Haven. Fair Haven Boy Scout Pack 18 meets on Thursdays at 7 p.m. at Fair Haven United Methodist Church on the Green.

CELEBRATING THEIR 109TH YEAR
SALUTE TO NATIONAL BOY SCOUT WEEK FEBRUARY 3RD-9TH Scouting: a history of community service The Boy Scouts of America, incorporated Feb. 8, 1910, and chartered by Congress in 1916, is an educational program designed for boys and young adults to build character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness. Locally, scouts are part of Fair Haven Troop 18 and Pack 18, as well as Poultney Pack 122, which includes members from both Poultney and Castleton. These troops and packs are part of the Ethan Allen District of the Green Mountain Council. The district serves Addison, Rutland and Bennington Counties. Community-based organizations receive national charters to use the Scouting program as a part of their own youth work. These groups, which have goals compatible with those of the BSA, include religious, educational, civic, fraternal, business and labor organizations; governmental bodies; corporations; professional associations; and citizens’ groups. Scouting encompasses a number of separate programs, all of them run year-round and separated by age groups. The Tiger Cubs program encourages the ethical decision-making skills for first-grade (or 7-year-old) boys. These boys participate in the program with their adult partners. The program emphasizes shared leadership, learning about the community, and family understanding. Cub Scouts focuses on developing ethical decisionmaking skills for boys in the second through fifth grade (or who are 8, 9, and 10 years old). Activities emphasize character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. Webelos Scouts develops ethical decision-making skills for fourth- and fifth-grade (or 10-year-old) boys. Webelos Scouts participate in more
advanced activities that begin to prepare them to become Boy Scouts. Boy Scouts is for boys 11 through 17 and designed to achieve the aims of Scouting through a vigorous outdoor program and peer group leadership with the counsel of an adult Scoutmaster. (Boys also may become Boy Scouts if they have earned the Cub Scouting Arrow of Light Award and are at least 10 years old or have completed the fifth grade.) Venturing is for young men and women who are 14 (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years of age to provide positive experiences through exciting and meaningful youth-run activities that help them pursue their special interests, grow by teaching others and develop leadership skills. The mission of the BSA is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. The Scout Oath is: “On my honor I will do my best to do my duty to God and my country and to obey the Scout Law; to help other people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight.” The Scout Law says: “A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean and reverent.” Volunteer adult leaders serve at all levels of Scouting in more than 300 local councils, 30 areas, and four regions, and nationally
with volunteer executive boards and committees providing guidance. Each autonomous local council is chartered by the BSA, which provides program and training aids along the guidelines established by the National Executive Board and the national charter from Congress. Cub Scouting is where it all begins. Ninety-five percent of all Boy Scouts participated in Cub Scouting at some time. Cub Scouting strengthens the family, encourages physical fitness, and teaches core values to live by through its program. A thrilling outdoor program starts in Cub Scouting with day camps, resident camps, councilorganized camps, pack camping, and the fabulous make-believe themes of Cub World venues such as castles, frontier forts, pirate ships and more. Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, and Venturers have many special activities available to them, such as jamborees, summer camps, and Scouting shows. The Order of the Arrow, Scouting’s national camping honor society, recognizes those Scout campers who best exemplify the Scout Oath and Law in their daily lives. The order has local lodge, section, and national meetings. Scouts who have become Eagle Scouts, the highest advancement award in Scouting, may join the National Eagle Scout Association. All Scout camps are inspected and accredited annually by teams of trained volunteers to ensure the health, safety and quality of program for campers.
In terms of financial support, on the unit level, chartered organizations that use the Scouting program provide meeting places and often furnish program materials and other facilities. Youth members help to pay their own way by paying dues to their pack, troop, team, ship, or crew treasuries, and through approved moneyearning projects, they can earn additional income for their units. Local councils are supported by donors through an annual Friends of Scouting campaign, the United Way, special events, product sales, foundation grants, investment income, bequests, endowment gifts, and special contributions. BSA runs three National High Adventure Bases, including Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, which is the most well-known. The Northern Tier Base is located in Minnesota and Canada, and offers wilderness canoe expeditions and cold-weather camping, and Sea Base offers aquatics programs in the Florida Keys. Located in northern New Mexico, Philmont offers a variety of rugged activities, including backpacking treks, horseback cavalcades and training and service programs. Volunteer leaders may attend the Philmont Training Center each summer for a weeklong conference. The Boy Scouts also produce a number of publications, including Boys’ Life, which has 1.1 million subscribers and focuses on Scouts, and Scouting Magazine, which is for adult leaders. Boys’ Life is a monthly and Scouting comes out six times a year. The BSA publishes handbooks for all phases of the Scouting program for use by youth members, adult leaders and parents; as well, more than 120 merit badge pamphlets for Boy Scouts have been produced.

News from the Welsh-American Genealogical Society By Arthur Roberts The collections of genealogy-related publications and documents gathered by the Welsh-American Genealogical Society (WAGS) over nearly three decades and made available to anyone interested in searching for their Welsh roots are being reorganized to facilitate access to these resources and to assure their integrity in perpetuity, announced society president Dr. Arturo L. Roberts. The main collection, started when WAGS was founded 29 years ago, is now housed at the WAGS offices in Poultney, Vermont. With its continued growth, the collection now calls for larger space. Janice B. Edwards, curator of the collection and WAGS vice president and secretary, explained that this reorganization is being carried out in three steps. In Phase I completed during 2017 and 2018 with the help of Martha Davies, midwestern states history documents were moved to the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project (GPWHP), located in Wymore, Nebraska. This institution, under the direction of Gwenith C.
Colgrove, president of GPWHP, has the technical and physical resources to take custody of that portion of the collection placed in its care. Now WAGS is focused on Phase II, its ever-growing New England and New York states collection and is planning to relocate it to an easily accessible site in the Poultney area. Options for this phase are undergoing review. Phase III of the collection reorganization will affect collections pertinent to other US states as well as those linked to other regions of the world beyond the United States. Help and donations from the community at large are sought as WAGS continues to move forward. Members and friends of the Poultney Area St. David’s Society and of other Welsh heritage, history and genealogy societies and museums, as well as friends throughout the world, are also assisting in this effort. Founded and incorporated in the State of Vermont in 1990 as an educational organization, WAGS is staffed by volunteers. Members are in the United States, Canada and other world regions. As a nonprofit organization, dona-

tions, gifts and bequests to the society are tax-deductible under Internal Revenue Service Code Sections 501(a) as described in 501(c) (3), 509(a) and 170(b) (I) (A) (VI). Donations to WAGS, may be designated for “annual fund,” “library fund” and/or “endowment fund” and will be gratefully received. All donated funds are used for the ongoing preservation work of the WAGS collections. WAGS collections are an assortment of written family histories, maps, books and other items pertaining to the people, events and history of Welsh people all over the world. New items are always accepted – however, WAGS should be contacted before sending or delivering items. The WAGS honor roll of donors is published annually in the WAGS winter newsletter, and monthly on the society’s public Facebook page. Tax-deductible contributions will help to ensure the continued life and growth of the society’s specialized collections. Checks should be made payable to: “W.A.G.S.” and mailed to: WAGS, 60 Norton Ave., Poultney, VT 05764-1029. Donations may also be made online through the WAGS Facebook page. For more information, email wagsoff1990@yahoo. com, visit the WAGS Facebook page, or call 802-2875744.
