films not likely to show up in the neighborhood multiplex. Past festivals have presented French and Latin-American cinema, as well as American independent films made by women or about female characters. This year’s slate of films is the result of a collaboration between Castleton’s Media and Communication Department and the Rutland Jewish Center. With major funding from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation and additional support from Jewish Communities of Vermont, the March festival will highlight contemporary films from Israel. Festival organizer and host Michael Talbott, who chairs Castleton’s Media and Communication Department and teaches about film at Castleton, did graduate research at New York University on film festivals and the culture that develops around festival-going. “It’s typical for a college or university to have a film festival, he said. “When I arrived at Castleton, I saw the need for something like this, so I got busy. Right from the start the festival has had an appreciative audience, both from within the university and in the community. “I’d say that our audiences are about 60 percent university students and 40 percent community members, he said. This year’s focus developed from a 2016 collaboration between Talbott and the Rutland Jewish Center. “After the first film festivals at Castleton, I was approached by members of the center who wanted to screen and discuss Israeli cinema there. We ended up showing three contemporary Israeli films, Talbott said. Those showings resulted in the center authoring grants to fund the showing of this year’s

Festival organizer and host Michael Talbott films at Castleton. Each screening will be introduced by Talbott, who will provide a short biography of the filmmaker and discuss how the movie made it from the mind of the filmmaker to the screen. Representatives from the Rutland Jewish Center will provide context on the film from the Israeli perspective. A question-andanswer session will follow each screening. “Community members often are very eager to share their reactions, Talbott said. “I think it’s important for students, who might not be as willing to voice their own opinions, to see how these sorts of interactions go and how questions about films and filmmaking are discussed. Featured films this year include “One Week and a Day on Monday, March 4; “The Dive on Wednesday, March 6; “Foxtrot on Monday, March 11; “Virgins on Wednesday, March 13; and “Menashe on Monday, March 18. Film synopses are available at www.castleton.edu/filmfest. “I’m grateful for the support this festival has garnered, both at Castleton and in the wider community, said Talbott, “and we look forward to sharing this year’s films.

Vote YES for Castleton Community Center To the Editor: Since 1998, the Castleton Community Center (The Old Homestead) has provided programs and services to help improve the quality of life for residents of western Rutland County. The Center helps seniors and disabled residents remain independent. More than 2,800 rides were given last year for doctor’s appointments, nursing home visits, adult day care, therapy, food shopping and senior meals. In addition, over 1,200 meals were served in our dining room to seniors from Castleton, Fair Haven, Hubbardton and surrounding towns. The Center offers health and fitness education, a walking trail and exercise programs to promote healthy living. Educational and recreational activities keep our seniors active and help improve the quality of life for them and their families. The Castleton Community Center does not receive United Way funding. It is supported through town appropriations, grants, special fund-raising events and the hard work of our members and volunteers. Castleton, Hubbardton and Fair Haven residents, please

Candidates sought for Middletown Springs town offices Voting for Middletown Springs on Town Meeting Day, Tuesday, March 5, will take place at the Middletown Springs Historical Society dining room. Serving your community is a great way to give back and to get a better understanding of what it takes to run the town. The Middletown Springs community is strengthened by

those who are willing to serve. This year there are a number of important positions that are lacking candidates. In addition, the town has no contested races. Residents interested in serving in any of the positions listed on the ballot are invited to consider a write-in campaign. It’s easy to get the word out through Front Porch Forum

and within various social networks. Any and all positions are open to a write-in campaign, but potential candidates are encouraged to run for positions for which there currently are no candidates. Town Moderator (1-year term): Kimberly Bushnell; Town Agent (1-year term): No candidate; First Constable

Dorset library features Manchester Elementary School artists in March

All-you-can-eat pie is available on Saturday, March 10, from 8 to 11 a.m. in Middletown Springs.

Pie for breakfast? Yes, please! Middletown Springs hosting unique breakfast next Saturday By Jared Stamm It’s early March, which means it’s time for pie, and lots of it, at the Middletown Springs Public Library’s allyou-can-eat Pie for Breakfast fundraiser. Next Saturday, March 9, from 8 to 11 a.m. at the Middletown Springs Elementary School, the library’s trustees will serve up as much pie as you can lift with your fork along with tea, coffee or juice. This annual rite of late winter/early spring is much-anticipated by pie-lovers across the Lakes Region. Library director Kimberly Bushnell will be on the lookout for her favorite, which is pecan. “And there’s a woman who always makes a spinach pie that is to die for,” she said. Sweet and savory pies are the order of the morning. Slices are cut thin so that patrons can try many different varieties, from coconut cream, lemon meringue, chocolate silk, maple pecan, to quiche, gluten-free chicken pot and the aforementioned spinach, made with gruyere cheese.

Last year, 35 bakers made more than 70 pies to sample. This delicious annual event, now in its 12th year, is so popular that it outgrew its original venues – the library building and then the historical society – three years ago. Middletown Springs Elementary School provides plenty of room to display the pies and elbow room to eat them. Bushnell got the idea to host the Pie for Breakfast fundraiser in Middletown Springs when she saw another library in Vermont hosting a similar event. “The event gets more and more popular each year,” said Bushnell. “Last year we had over 200 in attendance. And we alway have enough pie.” All the pies are homemade. “We have a large crew of volunteers who bake, and they get to choose which pies they’ll make. We never know exactly what we’ll have,” said Bushnell. “It’s a delicious surprise every year.” For those who feel their baking skills are not up to snuff but still want to contribute a pie to the event, Bushnell said,

help is just a phone call away. Sissy’s Kitchen will make and donate a pie to the event on their behalf for $15. There will also be a baskettype raffle with a variety of prizes, including maple syrup, bird seed and feeder, items from local crafters, housewares and gift certificates from businesses in Rutland and West Rutland. “One woman knits these great little stuffed monsters for the raffle,” said Bushnell. The price to attend is the same as it was last year: $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 5-12, and free for kids under 5. All proceeds benefit the Middletown Springs Public Library. Pie for Breakfast and the library’s spring book sale are the library’s largest fundraisers, supporting programs, new book purchases and more. For more information, contact the library at 802-235-2435. Middletown Springs Elementary School is located at 15 Schoolhouse Rd. in Middletown Springs Vermont.

The museum will open an hour early on First Friday so that visitors can stop in and dine on Welsh leek, Irish stew, Italian minestrone, Polish borscht, Slovakian mushroom, Jewish matzo ball and many other delicious soups. Visitors can purchase an $8 sampler cup to taste soups from the many different ethnic groups that came to the Slate Valley beginning 180 years ago. Diners will also be able to purchase a handcrafted bowl for $15. These bowls, which attendees can take home as a souvenir of the evening, come from The North Granville Pottery Co., the sponsor of the event.

Artisan bread will be provided by Rock Hill Bakery in Glens Falls. The museum welcomes others to bring a crockpot

of a treasured family soup recipe to share. Contact the museum at 518-642-1417. The beautiful handmade bowls come in an array of colors. In addition, North Granville Pottery Company will have items for purchase, including vases, large bowls, mugs and jewelry. “One of the great things about growing up in this area was welcoming neighbors. Visits on cold winter days always included a bowl of the most delicious soup and a slice of wonderfully warm bread to go with it! It was the ethnic diversity of Granville’s neighborhoods that allowed us the experience of sampling such an array of foods,” said Molly Biggs Celani, president of Slate Valley Museum’s board of trustees. “We hope our First Friday guests will find our soup sampling as enjoyable and as delicious!” Proceeds from the event will benefits Slate Valley Museum’s 2019 educational programs. At the Pember’s First Friday,

works of artist, writer and photographer Tom Atkins will be featured. A native of Virginia, Atkins is based in West Pawlet, Vermont, and works out of his new studio at the Mettowee River Meeting House in Middle Granville. Atkins began creating art more than 30 years ago, focusing on drawings. Highly detailed, his work in this medium features castles, old buildings and landscapes and surreal fantasy. Much of Atkins’s photography is focused on technology, historical and spiritual spaces, as well as landscapes and art photography. His watercolors however, go in an entirely different direction. “My watercolors are like poems,” he said. “They are designed to capture an idea or feeling more than portray a specific place, person or thing. The challenge is to take line and color, creating art that is abstract, yet tells stories and evokes emotions.” Atkins’s work has appeared

in galleries, magazines and public spaces. In addition to his work as an artist, Atkins spent 35 years as a designer of technology systems for television, AV and media-centric IT. These days, Atkins also is the pastor of Rupert United Methodist Church. In addition to Atkins’s art on First Friday, the Pember is pleased to bring back guitarist Tom Behan and mandolinist and fiddler Jeff Anderson as The Taylor Hill Ramblers, a bluegrass duo. Behan and Anderson are known for their harmonies, fun song selection and creative arrangements. The two form half of the larger High Peaks Bluegrass Band. First Friday at the Pember is from 7 to 9 p.m. Atkins’s art will remain on display into March. For more information on the Pember’s free First Friday event, contact Robert McGuire at 518-642-3032; thepember.org. Environmental assessment available for review VSO musicians to perform for The U.S. Forest Service is pleased to announce the completion of the Early Successional Habitat Creation Project Environmental Assessment and availability of the Draft Decision Notice. The project area is located on the Green Mountain National Forest within multiple towns in Bennington, Rutland, Windham and Windsor Counties, Vermont. The environmental assessment and draft decision documents are available for review during a 45-day objection period ending on April 1, 2019. Objections may be submitted to the Forest Service by any individual or organization who has eligibility to object. Eligibility is based on an individual’s or organization’s participation during the environmental analysis process comment period. David Francomb, district ranger responsible for making the final project decision, has tentatively selected the proposed action alternative in the

Draft Decision Notice. Management activities include the harvest of up to 15,000 acres of forested stands over a 15-year period to create early successional habitat that will benefit nesting birds and other wildlife dependent on this habitat type. The project has been designed to achieve desired conditions across the forest landscape by increasing the regenerating age class (0-9 years old) of forested stands. The project also includes activities to increase the aspen/birch forest, restore and improve wetland resources and provide a sustainable supply of forest products. Public involvement has played a large role in preparing the environmental assessment and draft decision documents now available for review. First rolled out to the public in early 2018, a public meeting and planning work with partners and other interested parties along with public input from the formal comment period

contributed to the development of the proposed action. If no objections are received during the objection period, the decision will be final and implementation can begin per the decision. Otherwise, objections will need to be resolved prior to a final decision. Information about the Early Successional Habitat Creation Project, including the completed environmental assessment and decision documents, and directions for how to submit objections may be found on the U.S. Forest Service website at: https://www.fs.usda.gov/ project/?project=53629. Hard copies also are available for review at the Manchester Ranger Station located in Manchester Center, Vermont, or the Forest Supervisor’s Office located in Rutland, Vermont. The public may also contact Jay Strand at 802-767-4261, ext. 5522 or via email at jay.strand@ usda.gov for more information about the project.

Van Gogh on-screen at Burr and Burton March 2 Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning will screen “Van Gogh: Of Wheat Fields and Clouded Skies” on Saturday, March 2, beginning at 4 p.m. at Burr and Burton Academy’s Riley Center for the Arts. Take a fresh look at Van Gogh through the legacy of Helene Kröller-Müller, the greatest private collector of the Dutch artist’s work and one of the first to recognize the genius of Van Gogh. The story unfolds of a woman who, in Van Gogh’s spiritual torment could recognize her own, showing priceless artistic treasures and the rare, naturalistic and architectural beauty of the Kröller-

Müller Museum set in the vast De Hoge Weluge park. The movie tells the tormented, existential story of the painter – seen through passages from his brother Theo’s letters – which sets the pace of the exhibition. The film helps viewers understand the importance of drawing as part of Van Gogh’s artistic technique. His seemingly instinctive “au premier coup” canvases were the result of long, preparatory studies – not sketches, but complete works of art in themselves – where the broken flow of lines that characterizes the style of his paintings can already be found. Tickets are available for $15
