Salute to National

Girl Scout Week March 10 - March 16, 2019 North Country Girl Scouts, we salute you

By Krystle Morey

The Girl Scouts of America is an organization that strives to instill moral values, character, and courage in the young women of America. Anyone who has met a member of one of the 20 troops within the Southern Washington County Girl Scouts can surely agree. Area residents have probably already been asked to purchase cookies by a scout. The girls get off to an early start, hawking their iconic cookies to friends and family starting in January and continuing on through February. Beginning in March, expect to see cookie booths pop up in Stewart’s Shops throughout Argyle, Greenwich, Cambridge and Salem. Although perhaps the most well-known aspect of Girl Scouts, selling cookies is but a fraction of what the girls do throughout the year. Recently the girls hosted their annual Powderpuff Derby, which “Truly, ours is a circle attracted a tremendous turnout in Hartford. More than 90 cars participate of friendships, in the event each year. united by our ideals.” A significant event the girls host is their drive to acquire new books for — Juliette Gordon Low, area hospitals. The scouts collect literature for the new-born wing of the Girl Scout founder hospitals. Brand-new parents then have the ability to bring books home with their infant and encourage reading from an early age. Each year, the area scouts embark on a trip to Hidden Lake in Queensbury. If the weather cooperates the girls are able to experience snowshoeing and participate in shaping ice sculptures. In April, the girls plan an event themed around Earth Day. In years’ past they planted flowers at the Salem gazebo. This year Earth Day is on Monday, April 22. Every year Girl Scouts march in area Memorial Day parades. Expect to see the girls parading this year on Monday, May 27. In June, the area scouts hold their annual awards ceremony recognizing the efforts and accomplishments of the girls and seniors who will be graduating; the bridging ceremony, in which scouts progress to the next level of scouting, is also held at this time. Girls who are interested in joining the Girl Scouts should contact Lisa Pembroke, southern Washington County service unit manager, at 518-222-4372. A Salute to Girl Scouting GIRL SCOUT LAW I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, and to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout.
