And it will take place, sun or snow.” Maple lore and demonstrations, sweet treats from local kitchens, a raffle and a silent auction featuring works by local

Maple Continued from front page artists and craftspeople, as well as merchandise from local businesses, are just some of the highlights of this annual maple extravaganza. Outdoors, festival-goers can watch a demonstration of maple sugaring the way it used to be done. High school student Phillip Mahar, the son of local sugar-maker Ryan Mahar, will be boiling sap in a cast iron kettle over an open fire. “The kettle is from the historical society’s collection,” said Wright. “Fred Bradley, who did the demonstration for about 20 years, showed Phillip the ropes a couple of years ago, and Phillip gives a great demonstration.” Inside the society’s auditorium at 2 p.m., historians Jon Mathewson and Wright will give a presentation on maple sugaring history using examples from the society’s collection of equipment. Ryan Mahar will speak to current practice.
Market Continued from front page brought a resolution to dissolve the co-op. “That recommendation was rejected by the membership, who voted instead to close retail operations, but keep the co-op as a legal entity,” said Samantha Kowalski, president of a new board that took over when the previous board resigned after that November vote. “Our thoughts were that new blood and new energy would find avenues to keep the co-op open,” said Kowalski. “And we did make some progress.” To that end, the co-op held two pop-up events and a community fundraising dinner at the end of last year. Another board member put together an application to Green Mountain College’s Student Campus Greening Fund, a program that gathers student proposals to encourage sustainability on campus. That grant was approved in the amount of $10,000. The grant would be used,
“Once Jon and I finish our tag-team presentation on the history, we’ll hand it over to Ryan, who describes modern maple-sugaring technology, including the use of tubing, vacuum pumps and new types of evaporators,” said Wright. Homemade soup from Sissy’s Kitchen and other talented chefs, chili and delicious maple desserts created by Historical Society members will be available for sale, as well as an abundance of Vermont maple products and new syrup from this year’s first boilings. And don’t miss out on oldfashioned sugar on snow, pancakes and syrup, and maple cotton candy. Activities for kids indoors will be hosted by retired schoolteacher Claudia Gonda. Videos about Vermont maple sugaring will be shown continuously. Local musician Paul Morgan and his friends will fill the air with the sweet sound of acoustic guitar, mandolin and fiddle. Silent auction items include Killington ski and golf passes, 100 gallons of heating oil, genea-
logical research, lessons and services by local professionals, a wine and cheese basket, a Cabot cheese basket, potted flowers, a homemade quilt and other fine craft items, homemade pies, maple syrup, a Vermont Teddy Bear, dining gift certificates and other donations from area businesses. “Some of our offerings are music and gardening lessons,” Wright said. “One local man has a pool room and will teach the winner how to play billiards.” The raffle includes $100 and $50 in cash, maple syrup and maple products, craft items, and gift certificates from local businesses. Museum exhibits on Middletown Springs history also will be on view during the festival. Admission to the festival is free, and the historical society building is handicapped accessible. For more information about Middletown Springs Maple Festival, call David Wright at 802-235-2376 or Pat Hemenway at 802-235-2421.
said Kowalski, to make some changes to the co-op so that café seating could be added as well as the licensure that goes along with it. “We also planned on restocking the store and starting to pay back some of the vendors to whom the co-op owed money,” Kowalski said. But when news that the college would close came in late January, the grant was reabsorbed into the school’s budget. “That announcement took the wind out of our sails. The school told us that if there wasn’t going to be a school in town in the fall, funding the co-op would not directly benefit the students,” said Kowalski. According to the plan of dissolution presented to the membership, the co-op will liquidate its store equipment and remaining inventory, including coolers, a freezer, an industrial coffee grinder, a coffee maker and some smaller items. That will cover only a portion of the co-op’s debts, however, and the process will take at least several months. “Operating a business like this in a community this small is just hard,” said Kowalski.

Castleton Free Library will host local author Allen Mills, Jr. on Saturday, March 9, at 1 p.m. Mills will share memories of life on his farm in Pittsford and read from his book, “Barnyards, Barefeet and Bluejeans: A Horse’s Tail,” at this free program. What does it take to run a family farm? Long days of hard work, fickle weather, all hands on deck and the belief that it can all be done. And certainly a love of rich earth and no qualms about getting good and dirty. Such things are probably as true today as they were during earlier days on Vermont family farms. But how has family farming changed or, rather, how were things done in the era just before modern mechanization, when a good workhorse was an essential part of daily life? Prompted by his daughter, Mills agreed to preserve the family stories in 42 short chapters chronicling the seasons of life on a farm tucked in a beautiful valley during the period 1947 to 1963. The vignettes – narrated by the farm’s workhorse Dick – include doodlebugs, hunting for ginseng, a possible electrocution, BB guns, butternut gathering, kids’ games involving dipping mullein stalks in manure, deer hunting, sugaring and more. The book paints a picture of life that will cause adults to reminisce and will fill in missing pieces of the past for kids who have grown up in the computer and cell phone age. Locals will appreciate the familiar place and family names cropping up in the narratives, such as Grandpa’s Knob, Whipple Hollow Cemetery, Rutland Fair and Poremski, Bathalon and

Native American exhibit March 8 The Chaffee Art Center will host an opening reception for a new exhibit of Native American art called “Pieces of the Past” on Friday, March 8, from 5 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will feature a wide variety of items created by earlier generations and contemporary artists from the Abenaki and Mohawk people of the Champlain Valley region. This project is a result of the collaboration between the Chaffee, Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, Vermont Abenaki Artists Association, College of St. Joseph and Professor Kurt Fetter and the Vermont Commission on Native American Affairs. The first-floor galleries will include clothing and accessories made for daily wear and special occasions, century-old
baskets from both Abenaki and Mohawk artists, a beaded handbag made of tanned deer hide, jewelry, flags, a lacrosse stick, musical instruments and other objects for ceremonial use. Visual art offerings will include paintings, drawings in ink and charcoal and photographs that reflect both Mohawk and Abenaki life. “It is good to have a balance between ancient and contemporary,” said College of St. Joseph professor Kurt Fetter, “otherwise a particular kind of narrative is propagated about indigenous people.” The opening is free and open to the public. For more information, call 802-775-0356. Chaffee Art Center is located at 16 S. Main St., Rutland, Vermont.

Upon Senator Jeffords’s retirement, Keefe held a senior executive position at Central Vermont Public Service before its purchase by what is now Green Mountain Power. He served as chair of the Manchester Planning Commission and was elected to the Vermont House of Representatives. “As we got to know him better, it became clear to us that, in addition to his professional qualifications, Brian Keefe has lived the values that Hildene espouses,” Moriarty went on to say. Keefe said, “I am thrilled by
the opportunity to work with such a world-class organization. Seth has assembled a talented staff, as well as an array of dedicated supporters. Hildene is a unique place, with immaculate grounds, diverse activities and rich ideals. It makes a difference in peoples’ lives. I look forward to joining the team.” Said Bongartz, “I couldn’t be happier. On a personal level, I like Brian a lot, and I look forward to working with him for the balance of this year. I have also watched Brian’s career unfold over the years and have been impressed by his thoughtfulness, respect for others, deep knowledge of the issues and his effective leadership skills. It is deeply gratifying to know that Brian will be here next year to do his part to take Hildene to the next level.” Although Bongartz is stepping down as president at the end of 2019, he will remain connected to Hildene as a parttime advisor to the new president. Hildene is the 412-acre estate and home of President Abraham Lincoln’s son, Robert Lincoln, statesman and successful industrialist. The cultural heritage site is focused on 21st-century social, environmental and educational goals as seen through the lens of history, preservation, conservation and sustainability. Hildene, The Lincoln Family Home, is open daily yearround, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To learn more visit www. hildene.org.

March wellness presentations in Castleton The Castleton Community Center will host three organizations presenting programs on wellness during the month of March. On Tuesday, March 12, from 10:30-11:30 a.m., a representative from Vermont Comforts of Home will make a presentation on the provision of high-quality individualized home care and how the organization can support individuals who qualify for a nursing home level of care. The goal of the organization is to provide a choice when, because of medical and personal care needs, a person can no longer live at home without support. Its experience has shown that most individuals can continue to live in a home environment with appropriate care. On Monday, March 18, at 11:30 a.m., Support and Services at Home brings Lynn Tucker from the Rutland Sheriff ’s Department to the
center to discuss “How to Combat Isolation” and outline ways seniors can interact with others, meet people and create new friendships. On Tuesday, March 19, at 12:30 p.m., Joyce Humphrey will be at the center to explain the services offered through the CarePlus program of private-duty care through VNA and Hospice of the Southwest Region. The program offers personal assistance that empowers individuals to age or recover from injury or illness where they are most comfortable, that is, at home. Consider having lunch in conjunction with these programs for a suggested donation of $4 for seniors and $5 for guests. To make a reservation, call 802-468-3093 by 9:30 a.m. the morning before the program. For more information, visit www.castletoncsi.org. Castleton Community Center is located at 2108 Main St., Castleton, Vermont.

Salute to National
Girl Scout Week March 10 - March 16, 2019 Girls Scouts: Building Courage, Confidence, Character By Jared Stamm Girl Scouts of America is 2.5 million strong, with more than 1.7 million girls and 750,000 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. – Go-Getter, Innovator, Risk-Taker, Leader – to change the world. The first Girl Scout troop was organized on March 12, 1912, by Juliette Gordon “Daisy” Low in Savannah, Georgia. Every year since, the Girl Scouts have honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place. Girl Scouting across the Lakes Region emphasizes the importance of being civically engaged, by teaching and encouraging girls to create positive change in their communities through advocacy and action. The 12 scouts in Castleton Troop #30007, led by Nicole Wilkins, prepared Thanksgiving dinner last year and donated it to the Castleton Cares community food shelf. Girl Scouts in Hubbardton Troop #52022, led by Rebekah Brostek and Kathryn Grossarth, take pride in marching in Rutland’s annual VFW Loyalty Day parade and the Independence Day parade in Castleton. The troop also collects Gift of Caring cookie donations for donation to the Hubbardton Fire Department. — Juliette Gordon Low, Scouting provides opportunities for girls to identify issues they care Girl Scout founder about, learn to stand up for what they believe in and take the lead to create positive change in their communities through advocacy and action. The 12 Girl Scouts in Middletown Springs Troop #30289, led by Bridget Tarbell and Kathy Clark, collected donations for and made toys for the cats at the Rutland County Humane Society. The 19 girls in Clarendon Troop #52027, led by Melissa Peer, have participated in winter clothing, backpack and food drives for their schools; helped “Stuff A Bus” for The Christmas Project, an annual event that provides Christmas gifts for underprivileged children; assembled care packages for deployed troops; and made Christmas ornaments and cards to take to a local nursing home. Girl Scouts explore science, technology, engineering and math – STEM – with hands-on activities to earn badges in scientific disciplines. The 14 girls in Poultney Troop #52019 are working with their leaders Joann Larson and Sarah Goodell on hiking/geocaching and robotics projects and more. They show their leadership skills, stand up against Girl Scout founder Juliette Gordon Low with a group of Girl Scouts bullying and help those in need. Girl Scouts tackle their fears and take risks by trying something new and taking part in outdoor adventures, like planning trips to Lake Sunrise Girl Scout Camp, learning to ride horses, going ice skating and more. And from January through April, Girl Scouts sell their iconic cookies. Proceeds from cookie sales stay local and help Scouts finance new trips, activities and projects. The experience also teaches Girl Scouts about female entrepreneurship, teamwork, planning and keeping a positive outlook. Girls and parents interested in joining Girl Scouts are encouraged to call Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains at 603-627-4158 to determine which troop is closest to their location or visit www.girlscoutsgwm.org.

Durham County Poets’ plays bluesy country/folk with a lot of verve.
Durham County Poets at Brandon Brandon Music will present Durham County Poets on Friday, March 15, at 7:30 p.m. Hailing from Ormstown, Quebec and the surrounding Chateauguay Valley, the five seasoned musicians, all of whom are songwriters, work together individually and collaboratively in composing their music. Delving into a variety of styles and genres, the Poets’ musical influences include a broad range of artists, from The Band, Dire Straits and Leon Redbone to James Taylor and Neil Young. The band has created a style best described as bluesy country/folk with a lot of verve. Bill Hurley of “Extended
Play Sessions,” a weekly American Roots music television program, said, “There’s something about the Durham County Poets that leaves you feeling that everything might be okay in the world after all. There’s a human spirit that lives in these people, and their music is the medium that allows that spirit to roam free.” Tickets: $20; pre-concert dinner is $25. Reservations required for dinner and recommended for the concert. Brandon Music is a BYOB venue. Information and reservations: 802-247-4295; info@brandon-music.net. Brandon Music, 62 Country Club Rd., Brandon, Vermont.
