Fair Haven’s elected goat goes viral By Jared Stamm Town meeting day this year in Fair Haven was pretty much business as usual – town manager Joe Gunter says there was nothing out of the ordinary regarding local initiatives. There was one exception, though: The town elected its first-ever pet mayor – a goat – on Tuesday, March 5. The idea, a collabo- Fair Haven Town Manager Joe ration between Fair Gunter and Lincoln.
Haven Grade School and the Town of Fair Haven to raise money to improve the school’s playground, was spearheaded by Gunter, who got the idea from a similar election in Omena, Michigan. “A cat named Sweet Tart was elected there,” he said. Lincoln led the slate of 15 candidates in Fair Haven and won a narrow victory over Sammie the dog, 13 votes to 10. The election drew attention from all over the country. Goat Continued from front page USA Today, Huffington Post, U.S. News & World Report, The Week and The New York Times. Headlines ran the gamut from silly — the Associated Press went with “A nanny state? Vermont town elects goat as honorary mayor” to “You’ve got to be kidding! US town elects goat as ‘mayor’” from AFP and “Lincoln the goat noses out Samoyed to win Fair Haven mayor’s race” in VTDigger – to the more serious we’re-just-reporting-the-news “Vermont town elects 3-yearold goat to serve as honorary mayor” from FOX News. The election even made it to the Twitter feed of Vermont Rep. Peter Welch: “Congraaaats to Lincoln, the new pet mayor of Fair Haven! It’s a big job, no kidding, but you goat this.” Gunter is pleased with the response to the election: “I’ve gotten about two or three dozen calls. I even appeared on a morning radio show in Los Angeles.” The three-year-old Lincoln “was pumped to be elected mayor,” said Gunter. “Then she went back to chewing down brush.” Her duties will be light this year. “We’ll put her picture up in the town office, and she’ll hang out at our events, including leading the Memorial Day parade and appearing at our Apple Fest,” said Gunter. And the playground fund?
Vermont Rep. Peter Welch tweeted his congratulations to Lincoln. “Lincoln will be the face of our playground fundraising. We’re planning to sell T-shirts with her picture and the phrase ‘Best of all towns,’ and we’ve launched a GoFundMe page for the playground.” Gunter hopes Lincoln’s election has helped make kids in Fair Haven more informed about the ways that towns work. “By being involved in the election, I’m optimistic that kids will become more aware of the importance of being involved in town events.” He added: “All too often the news that’s picked up these days is so negative, and politics is so divisive. This is a positive thing for Fair Haven and for Vermont, too.”

Best-dressed dippers will receive prizes courtesy of area businesses. After the polar plunge into the Champlain Canal, festivalgoers will no doubt need to warmup. Fortunately plenty of hot chili, hot dogs and hot cocoa will be served, allowing dippers and watchers alike to ward off the chill. Local expert Bigfoot researcher Paul Bartholomew

will also set up shop and deliver a presentation on the local legend at 1:30 p.m. “It’s always interesting hearing about a local protected species,” said organizer Marge Mohn. Then at 2:30 p.m. the stage will open for the more musically-inclined, with an open mic and karaoke session. During the early phases of planning this year’s festival, organizers were trying to bring back snowmobile races, however these have since been canceled due to organizers being unable to find enough interest. “We are having a number of other things,” said Mohn. Throughout the day, foster care workers with Berkshire Farm Center and Services for Youth will provide all the fixings for S’Mores and will even cook up them up for the kids free of charge. Mohn also stated there will be an art show at the marina throughout the day, The festivities will continue into the evening with a dance and pizza party for kids in grades 6-9 at 6 p.m. at the Whitehall Recreation Center on Williams Street. Pizzas will be provided courtesy of Whitehall’s own Joe’s Pizza. Wrapping up the festival will be a live-music performance at the marina with local musician and Whitehall grad PJ Ferguson and the PJ Duo returning for a show at 7 p.m. “We are always excited to play in Whitehall, we grew up here and knowing every single person in the crowd is awesome,” Ferguson said. “March 16 will be our last show at the Marina until the fall as we gear up for our busiest summer yet.” “So don’t miss this one as it could be a while until we’re back,” Ferguson added. CONGRATULATIONS TO PAMELA AREL ... our Patient of the Month! “I chose Vermont Sports Medicine Center for my physical therapy after my first hip replacement a year ago. I had amazing results and never considered going anywhere else. Every interaction was positive and encouraging, and I felt physically stronger with each appointment. My therapist, Erin, motivated me to do my exercises ... she is a joy to work with. I am very pleased with my results ... I will be starting a running program this Spring and anticipate doing a 5k this Fall. I would highly recommend Vermont Sports Medicine Center without any hesitation!”

Fraud, scams subject of seminar in Fair Haven Fair Haven Public Library, in cooperation with AARP Vermont’s Fraud Watch Network, is hosting a free educational seminar on fraud and scams on Saturday, April 6, at 1:00 p.m. at the library. The featured presenter is Elliott Greenblott, AARP Vermont Fraud Watch Network Coordinator and columnist for several New England newspapers. According to Greenblott, “Consumer fraud of every type is on the increase. From impos-
ters claiming to be IRS agents to computer tech support scams to bulk-mailed contests, there has been a dramatic rise in the number of attempts to defraud the public.” The presentation provides clear examples of scams and concrete steps participants can take to protect themselves. “We are seeing scams perpetrated across the age spectrum. Even newborn infants are being targeted for identity theft via stolen Social Security numbers,” said Greenblott.
The presentation provides free information and resources, including a national hotline, to assist people who feel they may have become victims. This free seminar does not require preregistration and is appropriate for all ages. Refreshments will be served. For more information about the seminar, contact Greenblott at 413-219-9778 or at egreenblott@aarp.org. Fair Haven Public Library is located at 107 N. Main St., Fair Haven, Vermont.
Free counseling for family caregivers to prevent stress Southwestern Vermont Council on Aging (SVCOA) and Community Care Network – Rutland Mental Health Services announced a new partnership that provides free caregiver counseling to family caregivers in Rutland County in 2019. “In recent years we’ve learned there is a large, unmet need for family caregiver support and counseling to help caregivers cope with the stress and rigors of caring for loved ones,” said Cinda Donton, elder service clinician with Rutland Mental Health and SVCOA. “As a result, SVCOA and Rutland Mental Health have teamed up to offer this free caregiver support program with anticipation that it will work to counter some of these effects and help to ensure better caregiving experiences for those in our area,” she said.
The program, which will focus on reducing caregiver stress, will help participants learn and implement strategies for stress reduction, limit the physical and emotional impacts of caregiving, encourage caregivers to engage in better selfcare, improve overall mental health and expand their support systems. In an effort to accommodate the needs and schedules of caregivers, the counseling service will be offered in homes as well as at SVCOA’s administrative office in Rutland. “Often caregivers find it difficult to make appointments out of the home due to their caregiving responsibilities, so we want to make the program as user-friendly as possible,” said Donton. “We greatly appreciate the work that family caregivers provide to their loved ones while recognizing
that it often comes at a toll physically, emotionally and mentally for the caregiver.” Referrals to the service will be generated through SVCOA and the Community Care Network, as well through various community partners and service providers. Once referrals are received, program staff will work to assess the stress level and stressors of each caregiver and assist them in undertaking their caregiving in ways that are less stressful for them. The service is being offered free of charge to any unpaid family caregivers age 60 and over, or any family caregivers who are caring for an individual who is age 60 or over. For more information or to sign up for the program, contact Cinda Donton or Aaron Brush at 802-786-5990.

Vaping epidemic among youth subject of info session at RRMC Rutland Regional Medical Center will sponsor an information session on vaping and young people on Monday, March 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the medical center’s CVPS/Leahy Community Education Center. Respiratory therapist and tobacco treatment specialist Sarah Cosgrove and regional prevention partnership coordinator Alan-Michael Saltis will discuss why misconceptions about the safety and addictive nature of vaping lead young adults to believe that e-cigs like Juul are harmless. Some young people believe that e-cigarettes are just flavored water vapor, that they’re nicotine-free and nonaddictive and that nicotine isn’t that bad for them anyway. Cosgrove and Saltis
believe sharing the facts about the health consequences of vaping is an important first step in addressing the vaping epidemic among young people. Parents, teachers, health professionals and other youth advocates will learn current initiatives taking place nationally and locally, along with practical suggestions that will have a positive impact for the county’s youth population. Preregistration is requested for this free event that is open to the public. Call 802772-2400 or visit www.rrmc. org. Rutland Regional Medical Center’s CVPS/Leahy Community Education Center is located at 160 Allen St., Rutland, Vermont.
Rutland Regional to offer free CDC diabetes prevention program Rutland Regional Medical Center will offer a diabetes prevention program on Tuesdays, beginning April 2, from 9 to 10 a.m. at the Godnick Adult Center in Rutland. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 90-95 percent of all diagnosed cases of diabetes in adults. Diabetes can cause serious health problems like heart disease, blindness and kidney failure. Through the diabetes prevention program sponsored by Community Health Improvement at Rutland Regional Medical Center, participants can get the support they need to help prevent these problems. The CDC’s diabetes prevention program offers 16 one-hour weekly sessions, five bi-weekly maintenance sessions and five
monthly sessions. Participants should plan to attend all 26 sessions for the greatest benefit. The program will benefit those with a risk for diabetes over the age of 18, a BMI of 25 or over and an A1C of 5.7-6.4 percent. Participants will learn about healthy eating and physical activity habits that have been proven to reduce the risk of diabetes. The goals of the program include reducing body weight by 7 percent, increasing physical activity to 150 minutes per week, overcoming stress and staying motivated. Preregistration is required. For information and to register, call Krista Neary at 802-7765507. Godnick Adult Center is located at 1 Deer St., Rutland, Vermont.
