Brandon Music presents singer-songwriter Rupert Wates Brandon Music presents singer-songwriter and guitarist Rupert Wates on Saturday, April 6 at 7:30 p.m. Wates’s prolific career that spans more than 25 years took off in 1994 when he signed a publishing deal with Eaton Music in London and became a full-time songwriter. A move to the United States in 2007 helped to establish him as “a prime figure in American music,” according to the Folk and Acoustic Music Exchange. Wates has released nine solo albums, won over 40 songwriting and performing awards and performed in over 3,500 concerts averaging 120 per year in every state in the US, Canada and Europe. Wates is a regular guest at Brandon Music, where audiences respond enthusiastically to his warm and expressive vocals, his beautiful acoustic guitar playing and his calm, relaxing performance style. Wates, too, prefers performing in smaller venues where the audience is up close and the emphasis is on the music. Tickets are $20; pre-concert dinner is $25. Reservations required for dinner and recommended for the concert. Brandon Music is a BYOB venue.

March Math Madness at Castleton library Castleton Free Library will host a March Math Madness family night on Monday, March 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. Whether you identify as mathphobic or you love the beauty of numbers and patterns, the library has something for you. The evening is free and open to all ages, but each child attending should be accompanied by at least one participating adult. March Math Madness will include many aspects of math – games, art, problem-solving, geometric reasoning, codes and more. Here are some details: Breakout EDU is a game platform in which a team uses critical thinking, collaboration and creativity to solve a problem and “break out” of a scenario. There will be a locked box that must be “cracked” by figuring out a series of coded locks before time runs out. In the Junk Drawer Geometry session – based on activities in the book by Bobby
Mercer – guests will manipulate paper and other materials to understand the relationships of triangles, circles and other shapes, and how they play out in the real world. Everyone knows about the Pythagorean theorem, and so do the carpenters who build houses. Come learn about the humble triangle and gain an appreciation for all of the builders and engineers who design our bridges to keep us safe. Art is infused with math concepts. Kids and adults will have time to explore at least one of these concepts at the symmetry station. Have quick fun with paint and bilateral symmetry or spend more time exploring radial symmetry (based on a rotating circle) to create a mandala with cardboard and bling. Mess around with math manipulatives in the library’s lending and in-library collections and peruse math books and more, including tangrams,
Cuisenaire rods, pattern blocks, “Bedtime Math,” “Family Math” and biographies of famous mathematicians. A lot of poetry is based on math – iambic pentameter and haiku to name a few. March Math Madness ushers in April Poetry Month, in the same way that March winds lead to April showers. Look forward to a month full of poetry activities, starting with poems for National Poem in Your Pocket Day. Librarian Mary Kearns has already prepared a batch to stuff in your pockets and share, beginning on April Fool’s Day. To help with planning for March Math Madness, please let the library know that you’ll be attending via email at castletonfreelibrary@gmail.com, Facebook message or call at 802-468-5574 with the number attending and ages of children. Castleton Free Library is located at 638 Main St., Castleton, Vermont.

Long Trail School presents one-acts Long Trail School will present an evening of one-act plays on Friday and Saturday March 29 and 30. Showtime both evenings is 6:30 p.m. In addition to a one-act full production version of William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth Night,” the evening will showcase two student works by Kassidy Brooks and Isa Blankenbaker as well as an excerpt from a play by Long Trail teacher Luke Krueger. Director Anna Bean leads a 20-person cast and crew in the Shakespearean comedy “Twelfth Night.” This version, adapted by London’s Globe Theatre, tells the tale of twins separated in a shipwreck and the complications of love and identity that ensue.
The two student works to be presented are “Here We Go Again” by Brooks, class of 2022, and “Laugh It Off ” by Blankenbaker, class of 2021. Krueger’s “Rivalry Week” is a unique collaboration between writer and actors. Krueger created the play from discussions with Bean’s Middle School drama students, who will be performing the excerpt. Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for students and seniors and are available at the door. For more information, contact Anna Bean at 802-867-5717, ext. 170. Long Trail School is located at 1045 Kirby Hollow Rd., Dorset, Vermont.
Mettawee School sixth grader John Smith has been summoned to Bennington, and the odds are pretty good that he knows the way to get there. Smith is the winner of the 2019 Mettawee School Geography Bee – also known as the GeoBee –and has been invited to participate in the National Geographic State of Vermont Championship at Southern Vermont College on Friday, March 29. Once there, Smith and some 100 fellow Vermont students will teach Google Maps a lesson or two in a contest to determine the State Champion Geographer. The winner will go on to compete in Washington, DC, in May for the National Championship. This year’s hotly contested Mettawee School GeoBee competition was held on Wednesday, January 16. Third-grade instructor Mark Rampone organized the event and also served as the official judge and scorekeeper. School librarian Kelly Ahlfeld moderated the GeoBee and art teacher Amy Harris pitched in as timekeeper. But the central attraction was the kids. “I am so proud of all the students who were on stage answering the challenging questions in front of the whole school,” said Mettawee principal Brooke DeBonis. “They were all so prepared and poised. They were all winners.”
Front row, left to right: Alyssa Sargent, third place; John Smith, first place; Weston Graf, second place. Back row, left to right: Brooke DeBonis, principal; Mark Rampone, third-grade instructor and GeoBee judge; Kelly Ahlfeld, librarian and GeoBee moderator. The Mettawee GeoBee finalists were the top finishers for each room, plus a few extra contestants who earned a spot by answering at least six of seven qualifying questions. After an elimination round, seven finalists moved on to the final contest: Weston Graf, Lily Sargent, Alyssa Sargent, Nahui Navarrete, Luke McChesney, Robert Smith, and of course, John Smith. The ensuing Mettawee champion is no stranger to geography. “I’ve always enjoyed science and reading history and maybe that helped a bit,” said Smith. “But
long before I ever even heard about GeoBee, I loved reading the National Geographic magazine. I’m pretty sure that came in handy.” The third place winner was Alyssa Sargent and the runnerup was Weston Graf. Smith’s victory at Mettawee, however, was not enough to earn a trip to Bennington. After the local contest, he had to take a test to qualify for the State GeoBee Championship. He passed in flying colors and is now preparing for the next round.
