Do you know what to do after being involved in an auto accident? Read this very important story on page 3.

tips to successfully sell your car

Selling a used vehicle does not have to be a complicated process. But too often private sellers struggle to sell their vehicles because they are unsure of how to do so. A little information on the selling process can make it easy to unload vehicles quickly and at the prices sellers desire.

Buyer's guide to financing a vehicle

1. Know the market. The experts at Edmunds say sellers should research the market before putting their vehicles up for sale. Compare the prices of similar makes and models, and track whether those vehicles are moving quickly. Cars that are hot commodities will sell relatively quickly. Even though these may not be the flashy vehicles, family sedans, trucks and vans tend to turn over fast. Convertibles, classic cars or those with special features may take longer to move and will have to be priced accordingly.

2. Determine the vehicle's worth. Just because sellers want to get predetermined amounts for their vehicles doesn't mean those figures are the going rates for their cars and trucks. Using resources like Kelley Blue Book, NADA Guides and Autotrader.com can help sellers determine the value

See SALE, pg. 15

The price of the average car continues to rise. Analysts at Edmunds estimate the average transaction price of a new vehicle now hovers at roughly $36,000. Few people can walk into a car dealership and pay such a price in cash, which means that savvy shoppers need to familiarize themselves with the financing process in order to get their dream rides / see guides, page 15

The best ways to prevent car theft The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that a vehicle is stolen every 44 seconds in the United States. And it's not just the expensive models that are targets of thieves. Drivers may not realize they are making obvious mistakes that can make their vehicles targets for potential thieves. Guarding against car theft comes down to avoiding common pitfalls, using common sense and making vehicles less attractive to thieves.

brainer, but giving thieves easy access to vehicles increases the risk of theft. Always lock the vehicle, even if you're only running into the house or a store for a few minutes.

Tips on how not to make your car a target

n Keep valuables hidden. Don't leave purchases, cell phones, money (even loose change), expensive sunglasses, or electronics within sight in the vehicle.

n Exercise caution with spare keys. Do not hide a spare key under the vehicle or in an obvious spot. Car thieves are wise

Manchester Newspapers’ Spring/Summer Car Care '19 - Week of March 18 - 3

What to do after being involved in an accident Car accidents happen every day, and rare is the experienced driver who has not been involved in at least one accident during his or her time behind the wheel. Drivers or passengers who have been involved in previous accidents may react calmly when involved in another accident, but the experience of being in a car accident can be shocking to those people who have never before been involved in a car crash. According to the World Health Organization, there were 1.25 million road traffic deaths across the globe in 2013. But not every traffic accident involves a fatality, and many are minor incidents in which all involved parties walk away unharmed. Unfortunately, all traffic accidents, however minor they may be, have financial ramifications, and it's in drivers' and passengers' best interest to familiarize themselves with the right way to respond to traffic accidents should they find themselves in a crash.

n Dial emergency services. After pulling over and out of traffic, drivers and passengers involved in traffic accidents should dial 9-1-1 emergency services. If drivers are incapable of pulling onto the shoulder or out of the way of oncoming traffic, immediately put on the vehicle's hazard lights and dial 9-1-1. Enlisting the help of emergency services like 9-11, even when no one appears to be injured and no vehicles seem to be damaged, is necessary because the presence of a neutral third party like a police officer or emergency medical technician can be helpful should the accident ultimately lead to legal action.

n Exchange insurance information.

After each driver has pulled over and is out of harm's way, attempt to exchange insurance information. If you lost your insurance card or can't find it in your vehicle, don't panic. Simply use your mobile phone to call your insurance company and get your policy number. Police may let you off the hook if you can provide proof of insurance, even if you don't have any such proof in your vehicle. If the other driver appears irate and/or confrontational, wait until the police arrive to exchange insurance information and do your best to avoid this person.

n Obtain a police report. Police reports are vital, even when accidents are minor. Insurance companies may not pay damages if no police report has

been filed and the involved parties have differing accounts of the accident. And drivers' premiums may increase if they are involved in an accident in which no one is deemed at-fault. Always protect yourself after a traffic accident by calling the police and obtaining their official report of the incident. Also, ask the responding officer if you are required by law to report the accident to the local motor vehicle agency. Some areas require this, while others do not.

n Take photos. If you have a smartphone or camera on hand, take as many photos of the accident as you can without risking your safety. Timestamped photos may help you should a lawsuit or other legal action be taken in the future. Car accidents can be scary, and knowing how to respond to accidents can help drivers and passengers make the best of unfortunate situations.

What to do and not to do if you blow out your tires the nearest roadside ditch. When a tire blows, the vehicle will immediately slow down and then begin pulling to the right or left, depending on which side of the car suffered the blowout. The automotive retailer Pep Boys notes that, if a front tire blows out, drivers will feel the force in their steering wheels, while a rear tire blowout will be felt more in the seat and/or body of the vehicle.

Many frightening scenarios can unfold while driving. Inclement weather can affect visibility and the safety of roads, while distracted driving can put anyone on the road in harm's way. One situation that can suddenly turn a Sunday drive into something scary is a blown out tire. No drivers or vehicles are immune to blown out tires. But savvy drivers who know what to do in such situations can greatly reduce their risk of a blown out tire turning into something far worse.

n Driving through a blowout Plenty of drivers have safely navigated their way through tire blowouts. When such a situation arises, drivers should avoid slamming on their brakes, instead allowing their vehicles to gradually decelerate, making sure to turn on their emergency flashing lights once they are certain they have con-

n Recognizing a blown out tire The movies might make blown out tires seem as though drivers suddenly find themselves in wholly uncontrollable situations. But blown out tires won't immediately send cars into

trol of the vehicle. As the vehicle slows down, pull to the side of the road, calling for help if necessary.

n When on the side of the road Drivers who do not have a spare tire or cannot change the tire themselves should wait patiently for assistance to arrive after they have called for help. Drivers who can change their tires should place reflective cones or triangles behind their vehicles before they begin working. Such devices warn oncoming drivers of stranded vehicles. If replacing the tire with a donut, remember that such replacement tires are not designed to travel long distances and will need to be replaced shortly after they are put on the vehicle.

Simple projects to keep cars running smoothly One of the ways to keep vehicles running strong for years on end is to adhere to the manufacturerÕs recommended maintenance schedule. Although there are many factors drivers cannot control, including recalls, weather and road conditions, proper maintenance is something drivers can control, and maintaining a vehicle can be very simple.

Check battery contacts Many modern car batteries do not require a lot of maintenance. However, one problem that may occur is a buildup of minerals or corrosion from leaking battery fluid on the contacts. In such instances, use a battery cleaning brush to clean the contacts and then replace the cables.

Tire maintenance

Oil changes Motor oil lubricates the engine and keeps it in good working order. Old oil becomes more viscous and can lose its efficacy. While changing motor oil is important, motorists should follow the ownerÕs manual or the factory maintenance schedule regarding how often it needs to be changed, as all vehicles are not alike. The old myth that cars and trucks need oil changes at set intervals has changed as digital check capabilities have evolved. Car computers can now keep track of more than just mileage. Computers now track starts and stops and trip durations to determine when cars need oil changes.

Coolant levels Coolant helps prevent vehicles from

overheating and also prevents the water that it mixes with in the radiator from freezing or boiling. Coolant is nearly as important as motor oil in vehicle maintenance. Coolant is typically comprised of a 50/50 mix of distilled water and antifreeze. These two substances work together to maintain a proper ratio of heat energy and prevent eventual

breakdown and destruction of the engine. Coolant is usually changed once per year or at 30,000 miles. This keeps the coolant working properly and will help prevent corrosion and deposits from forming inside the cooling system. Coolant levels might be checked during a full-service oil change appointment.

Properly inflated, balanced and rotated tires make for a smooth, safe ride. Check that tires are wearing evenly and that the vehicle is not pulling to one side. A lack of tread on tires requires they be replaced. Because tires can be expensive, many drivers put off routine tire maintenance. But this can be a costly mistake. Tires that are worn or not properly inflated can cause skidding, problems braking and accidents. Blowouts also may occur, putting drivers, their passengers and fellow motorists in danger. ItÕs best to be proactive with regard to tire maintenance. Maintaining a vehicle in adherence to manufacturer guidelines can prolong the life of the car, improve its safety and increase its trade-in or resale value.

Do not underestimate your auto mechanic's knowledge It's easy to underestimate the level of know-how required to be an automotive mechanic, and just how essential the job is. There are an estimated 30,000 parts on the average car, and data from the International Organization of Motor Vehicle

Manufacturers indicates around 74,705,000 cars were produced in 2018. Auto mechanics are in high demand. Although many high schools offer adequate training to prepare individuals for a job in automotive mechanics, most mechanics are now expected to

have completed an associate degree or certificate program in automotive training to keep up with ever-evolving vehicle technology. Students can enroll in a vocational education program, receive a certificate and then go on to employee training. Upon completion of

that training, students can become master mechanics. Training and schooling typically takes two years. Salary.com reports that the average automotive mechanic salary in the United States was $38,551 as of December 2018.

Tips on how to reduce your vehicle maintenance costs Major repairs to a vehicle can be expensive. When unanticipated repairs are necessary, drivers' budgets can be thrown out of whack, potentially causing a domino effect that compromises their ability to pay their bills on time. Whether your vehicle is brand new, a few years old or reaching milestones on its odometer with every mile driven, there are ways to care for the vehicle so you aren't caught off guard by costly repairs down the road. n Read your owner's manual. Every vehicle, whether it's purchased brand new from a dealership or preowned from a preowned dealer or private citizen, should come with an owner's manual. Don't worry if you purchased a preowned vehicle from a private citizen who lost the manual, as many manufacturers have manuals available for free on their websites. Print manuals may cost some money. Drivers may be able to find their manuals elsewhere online on a site such as Justgivemethedamnmanual.com, which has thousands of manuals from various automakers available. Once you have

Credit issues? How to manage your credit when buying an automobile Many people in the market for new vehicles intend to lease or finance a car once they find the make and model they want. Such an approach will necessitate a credit check. Credit checks make some consumers, even those who have relatively good credit, uncomfortable. But when managed well, credit and checks on individuals' credit ratings can go smoothly and save drivers considerable amounts of money over the life of their leases and auto loans. n Don't leave room for surprises. Even consumers who feel they have firm grasps on their credit scores should check their scores before they go shopping for leases or auto loans. Reports may contain errors that can affect the interest rates lenders are willing to give lessees or borrowers. Fixing

mistakes in advance of shopping for a car ensures drivers they will get the best interest rate and loan terms possible for someone in their financial standing. n Clean up a score if it falls short of expectations. Buyers who don't know their credit scores may be disappointed if those scores come back lower than they expected. Numerous factors, be it missed payments or high debt-to-credit ratios, can lower credit scores. Even buyers with good jobs and money in the

bank may not have good credit scores. When possible, buyers with low credit scores should wait until they can improve their scores before shopping for a lease or loan. The higher buyers' credit scores, the lower their interest rate will likely be, saving them considerable amounts of money over the life of their lease or loan. n Wait before having your credit run. Some auto dealers may want to run prospective buyers' credit histories the

moment those buyers step onto their lots, but it pays for consumers to be patient and wait until they have found a vehicle they like before agreeing to a credit check. Each time a person applies for credit, his or her credit score dips. But according to Bankrate.com, applicants who file all of their loan applications within one two-week period will only have those applications count as a single credit inquiry. n Don't overdo it. Buyers with great credit scores may be tempted to stretch their automotive budgets. But drivers who spend more they can afford may soon find that their excellent credit ratings are suffering. Stay on budget so payments can be made on time and credit scores stay strong. Buying or leasing a new vehicle can be made easier when buyers enter the

Do you know how to properly connect jumper cables? In the world of automotive emergencies, motorists need to learn certain procedures for “safety’s sake.” Two of the most valuable lessons, changing a tire and hooking up jumper cables are best learned before an emergency arises, according to the Car Care Council. The process of boosting a battery is especially important in cold weather. Jumper cables or cables on a portable battery booster should be connected properly to avoid sparks, which can cause an explosion of the hydrogen gas emitting from a battery. Beyond this, an incorrect hook up

can damage critical, and expensive, electronic components. n The procedure is simple: Connect the positive (+) clamp to the positive terminal of the healthy battery and the other positive clamp to the corresponding terminal of the dead battery. Next, the negative (-), or ground, terminal on the good battery and, finally, the negative clamp to the engine block, frame or other grounded metal as far as possible from the battery. You want to avoid sparks in the vicinity of the explosive hydrogen

gas that emits from the battery. Do not connect it to the ground terminal (negative). When using a portable battery booster, the process is much the same. Connect the positive clamp of the booster cable to the positive clamp of the dead battery. Then connect the negative cable to the engine block or other grounded metal away from the battery. The Council offers an additional suggestion: if you are buying jumper cables or a portable battery booster, buy the best quality you can afford. Look for well-insu-

Under the heavy electrical load of boost starting, lightweight cables may not be able to deliver enough current to start some engines. In fact, they have been known to melt in the user’s hand. If your battery is three-years old or older and you haven’t had it checked, it’s a good preventive measure to do so, suggests the Council. A battery’s power is reduced as the temperature drops. Money-saving tips to reduce your fuel consumption Reducing fuel costs is foremost on the minds of many drivers. Myriad costs are associated with owning an automobile, many of which are within a driver’s control. For instance, safe drivers are likely to spend less on auto insurance than drivers with a history of traffic violations or accidents, while drivers who purchase a vehicle with a high safety rating will likely spend less to insure that vehicle than they would a sports car. One of the costs associated with driving that some drivers may mistakenly feel is beyond their control is the cost of fuel. Drivers might not be able to control the price at the pump, but there are many ways drivers can spend less on fuel, helping them save money and helping the environment along the way.

Emphasizing efficiency Making a vehicle more efficient is a great way to save money at the pump. But drivers don’t need to get under the hood or have a mechanic’s understanding of automobiles to make their cars more efficient. In fact, a few minor adjustments is all it takes to make a car more efficient and save drivers, regardless of their mechanical inclinations, money at the filling station.

n Adequately inflate tires. Tires that are not properly inflated increase drag on a vehicle, which then consumes more fuel to operate at full capacity. Check the driver’s manual for the manufacturer’s rec-

ommended tire pressure, and check the tire pressure frequently to ensure your car isn’t working harder than it needs to be.

n Open the windows at lower speeds. Air

n Clear out the trunk. A car filled with clutter is carrying unnecessary weight, making it harder for the car to accelerate and consuming more fuel than it should be. Clear out the trunk and anything inside the vehicle that you don’t need.

makes the car heavier, decreasing the vehicle’s fuel efficiency as a result. While that may be true, drivers who don’t fill up make more trips to the filling station, and those trips can waste fuel. In addition, when the gas cap is removed from your vehicle, vaporized gas escapes from the tank, so opening the cap more frequently allows more vaporized gas to escape.

n Pay for gas with a card that rewards you with cash for making purchases. While using a cash-back credit card won’t reduce your fuel consumption, it will earn you some money back on your fuel purchases.

n Don’t pay more for fuel your car won’t utilize. Some drivers might feel as though putting a high-octane fuel in their vehicles will improve the vehicle’s performance. But that’s not the case. A highoctane fuel in a car that’s built for a lowoctane fuel won’t improve the car’s performance or its gas mileage. Only purchase the fuel the owner’s manual recommends. For many new vehicles, that means 87-octane, or “regular,” fuel, which is typically the most affordable.

Drive wisely Driving habits can also impact how much fuel you’re consuming. Driving habits can be hard to change, but drivers who start driving with a mind toward safety and reducing fuel consumption can take steps to do just that.

Child passenger protocol you should always follow Parents and caregivers take various measures to safeguard their children around their homes. The same attention to safety also extends to when families leave the house. Rules in place concerning vehicular safety are designed to keep kids safe on the road. Car seats, boosters and seat belts provide protection for infants and children when used correctly. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that car crashes are a leading cause of death for children ages 1 to 13. The NHTSA's General Estimates System states that, in 2016, 394 children age 5 or younger died in car crashes.

However, in that same year, 328 were saved by using car seats. The right car seat can save lives, but parents, especially those expecting their first child, can easily become overwhelmed by the various types of seats on the market. Understanding the different seats, and when and how to use them, can help parents navigate their options.

Choosing a car seat There are various types of car seats, and each may be appropriate depending on a child's age and size.

NASCAR and its rich and entertaining fan history Millions of racing enthusiasts tune in to watch their favorite NASCAR drivers every weekend. Whether filling the stands in person or watching on television, NASCAR fans are drawn to the action and the sport's storied history. It is believed that what would ultimately evolve into car racing began during Prohibition times when "runners," or those who delivered moonshine, souped up their cars to evade federal tax agents. These runners took pride in evading the law and would hold informal races to determine who had the fastest car and greatest racing chops. Eventually the need for smuggling booze waned, and car racing became a more respectable sport. On February 21, 1948, the National Association for Stock Car racing was officially incorporated, although the first official NASCAR race took place six days earlier. The sport would go on to be one of the most popular spectator activities in North America and is now a multibillion dollar industry. NASCAR owes its beginnings to mechanic and auto-repair shop owner William "Bill" France, Sr. of Washington, D.C. France became interested in racing after relocating to Daytona Beach, Fla., which he discovered was a hotbed for racing enthusiasts. France involved himself in racing cars and promotion. France felt there

NASCAR has been around for decades, and new stars and fans are made each year. should be a sanctioning body to govern the sport, so in 1947, he organized a meeting in Florida to discuss the future of stock car racing and conceived the notion of NASCAR with other members of the racing community. As NASCAR amassed its legions of fans, it also helped solidify the star status of many drivers. Richard Petty, David Pearson, Dale Earnhardt Sr. (and later Junior), Jimmie Johnson, and Jeff

Gordon are just a few of the notable drivers who have torn up tracks. In 1998, amid 50th anniversary celebra-

tions, NASCAR put together a list of the organization's 50 Greatest Drivers. Living members of the group were honored during pre-race festivities for the 1998 Daytona 500. NASCAR has built its reputation not only on quality races, but also through sponsorship. In the history of NASCAR, there have been only three naming rights partners: RJ Reynolds, Sprint/Nextel and Monster Energy, which took the reins in 2017. Those unfamiliar with NASCAR may think that the NASCAR season never ends. However, there is a defined season. The race season, comprising 38 races, starts in February and ends in November. Races are conducted on privately owned race tracks, all of which are asphalt or concrete. Although NASCAR has southern roots, tracks were built in California and Las Vegas to tap into newer audiences. NASCAR has been around for decades, and new stars and fans are made each year.

Tips on how to have the ultimate tailgating party Tailgating involves hosting a gathering with friends or family from the back of a vehicle. This social gathering typically features an informal meal and refreshments. Tailgating usually occurs in the parking lot of a sports stadium, but it also is commonly seen preceding concerts or other large events. Tailgating gets its name from the fact that people set up chairs around the rear of the vehicle, or actually sit on the tailgate itself. For many people, tailgating is a lifestyle, and they've honed their skills to deliver parking lot parties that are tough to rival. With some advanced planning and know-how, anyone can throw a success-

ful and memorable tailgate party. Follow these tips to get started.

n Create a mobile tailgating kit. Turn a toolbox into an essentials collection for tailgating. Fill a metal toolbox with necessary gear, such as barbecue basics, bottle openers, condiments, trash bags, zip-baggies, and paper towels. Then simply grab the toolbox and set out for the tailgate party location.

n Prep the night before. You'll want to get the best spot in the lot, so do the bulk of the work the night before the event. Pre-chill beverages so they will stay at the right temperature in the cooler. Sort out recipe items and ensure

that all the food staples are well secured and ready to put in the cooler. Pre-purchase ice so it's ready to go.

n Pack smart. Store plates and silverware in a plastic bin with a lid. Dirty dishes and other soiled cooking tools can be kept securely inside and toted home for washing. n Choose menu items wisely. Keep in mind that foods that are portable and eaten out of hand are best at tailgates. This limits the trash and how many utensils will need to be discarded or washed. Burgers, hot dogs, kabobs, sliders/sandwiches, and the like are ideal tailgate foods.

n Label coolers. Make sure guests know where to find the items they need.

Label coolers to differentiate between beverages and other supplies. Freeze water bottles to use in place of ice in the coolers so that the cold water can be consumed as the bottles thaw.

n Create a warming oven. Coolers insulate warm or cold items. Grilled foods or foods cooked at home can be kept warm until eaten. n Establish a washing station. A clean, rinsed out, spigot-style laundry detergent container can be transformed into a washing station. The most important tip is to make sure others can find your location. Tie balloons to the car so that guests can spot it in the crowd. Then have fun before the game or concert.

Drivers may benefit by changing their tires when seasons change. Winter tires perform better when temperatures remain below 45 F and not just when it is snowing, which is why using the term "snow tires" is a bit of a misnomer. Regular tires, sometimes referred to as "summer" tires, tend to work better when the mercury climbs, as the rubber can become inflexible in colder temperatures. Despite the name, all-season tires do not necessarily make them superior in all seasons. They tend to offer better grip in snow than summer tires, but according to Popular Mechanics, they do not perform as well when roads are damp, such as during spring. Still, many people who prefer one tire type for the entire year often find all-season tires adequate. However, for those who live in regions where snowfall is rare, regular summer tires will fit the bill for most driving conditions until temperatures plummet. Then it's worth switching to winter tires. If motorists are particularly concerned with improving water displacement on wet roadways, they can select tires that have specific tread patterns designed to evenly redistribute water as the tire hits the pavement.

n Observe speed limits. When glare is present, slow down and keep more space between your vehicle and the vehicle in front of you. If someone in front of you needs to brake suddenly, the greater distance between vehicles can give you more time to react and avoid accidents. n Change your route. Try changing your commute so you're not driving head-on into eastern sun in the morning and western sun in the afternoon. n Invest in new sunglasses. Special lenses that mitigate glare, UV rays and blue light can make it easier for drivers to handle glare when behind the wheel.

n Make sure the visor is functioning. Sun visors are there for a reason. Use it to the best of your ability, angling as needed.

n Pull over. If the glare is especially bad, Plymouth Rock Assurance suggests playing it safe and pulling over until the sun rises or sets. You also may want to change your driving time to avoid the glare. Motor vehicle accidents can happen on bright, sunny days. Glare can compromise drivers' visibility, and drivers may need to take steps to protect their vision on sunny days.

Important tips to stay safe driving in wet weather and visibility has improved.

Drivers must modify their driving habits when weather compromises their visibility and makes road conditions unsafe. Rain can fall any time of year, but tends to be most problematic in spring. According to the Federal Highway Administration, wet roadways, and rain in particular, are the main cause of weather-related vehicle crashes. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration notes that, between 2004 and 2013, rain caused 573,784 crashes. To drive safely in the rain and avoid accidents, drivers should follow certain precautions.

n Recover from a skid. Skids can be frightening, but when skidding, resist any temptation to slam on the breaks. Instead, continue to look and drive in the direction you want to go and slowly ease up on the accelerator. n Skip the cruise control. It's important to maintain control over the vehicle in rainy conditions, so avoid using cruise control.

n Maintain windshield wipers. Inspect and, if necessary change windshield wipers regularly to ensure they are Learn important lifesaving tips on how to drive in wet weather. working optimally. Switch phones and other devices off so you can fully focus on the road and other drivers. Rainy weather can contribute to poor driving conditions. Drivers should make changes to speed and other factors to make wet weather driving as safe as possible.

Guides In addition to finding the perfect car or truck, buyers must spend time researching the ideal way to pay for it. Car loans are key to the car-buying process. Too often shoppers wait until they're in the negotiating seat at the dealership before they even know what they can spend, and this can be a mistake. A poor financing deal hurts buyers over the long run and may lead to defaulting on the loan and dealing with the credit fallout that defaulting produc-

Vehicle financing is a step-by-step process that should begin long before consumers even pick out a car. n Examine your spending and saving. Start by looking at your finances and establish a budget. How much cash do you have on hand for a down payment? Also, how much can you comfortably devote to a new car payment and requisite auto insurance? Cars that are more visible are less likely to be targeted by thieves. serviced. According to Kelley Blue Book, proof of regular oil changes and other services can be a good selling point because it shows that the seller maintained the vehicle to the best of his or her ability. It could be worth the investment to pull the CarFax¨ report on the vehicle as well to see how it measures up. Some buyers will request that information as well. n Visit lenders. The financing deal offered by the dealership might not be the best price possible. You can get preapproved/prequalified for an auto loan the same way you do for a home mortgage at banks and credit unions. This helps you secure the best interest rate possible. It also provides negotiating power. A preapproval letter puts you in the position as a stronger "cash buyer,"

According to the safety resource Safewise, nearly half of all auto thefts occur as a result of not performing reasonable precautions - such as failure to turn off the vehicle after exiting.
