Fair Haven Concerned to honor volunteers By Jared Stamm Fair Haven Concerned loves its volunteers and wants to let the community know. The organization is hosting an open house on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., to thank its group of dedicated volunteers, provide information on the many programs it offers and show off its new location at 49 Main St., where it moved in January. There will be special prizes for volunteers in the community, and in celebration of the third anniversary of the organization’s Second Chance Thrift Shop there will be refreshments and surprise savings throughout the day for its thrifty shoppers. “We are forever grateful for the volunteers that make Fair Haven Concerned what it is,”

said Jennie Reed, a member of the organization’s board. “We would not be able to offer all of the services we do to the communities of Fair Haven, West Haven and Benson without the dedication of our volunteers.” Fair Haven Concerned began Executive director Ashley Bride (second from left) is joined by Fair Haven in 1983 as part of Concerned volunteers (left to right) Carol Crawley, Mary Brodeur, Josie United Way of Johnson, Sandy Kuehn and Heather Middleton. Will Amidon, an associate professor of geology at Middlebury College, will discuss “Our Teenaged Mountains.” New England’s mountains have always been billed as eroded remnants of the ancient Appalachians and once as high as Mount Everest. Amidon’s research may tell a different story: The mountains may be very much younger and created by recent tectonic events. Science Pub gives participants the opportunity to listen to short, informal lectures by area experts and then join the lively conversation. So have a drink, stay for supper and end the weekend with a spurt of brain growth. For more information, call 802-442-5574 or visit www.castletonfreelibrary.org. Concerts run on Thursday evenings in June, July and August, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of West Main and Quaker streets, with the occasional special concert by the Poultney-Granville Town Band on select Sundays throughout the summer. Whiskey River and the American Longboards are among the returning crowdpleasers. Skippy and the Pistons, a Saratoga-based classic rock band; and Studio Two, a Beatles Tribute Band out of New Hampshire, are two new acts. “We try to mix it up,” said

village clerk Rick Roberts. “We’ve got some country, oldies … party/wedding bands…” “It’s a 50/50 deal… half are new and half are coming back,” he said. On Aug. 22, the Washington County Band will return in August after a several-year hiatus from the series. “They haven’t been here in three or four years,” said Roberts. Attendance is free. There are often activities that run in tandem with the concerts, such as strawberry socials, fireworks, chicken barbecues and more. On July 25, Daryl Magill and the Sass and Brass band will take the stage – an act sure to get the crowd dancing and singing along. Granville’s Taste of the Slate Valley will run simultaneously, bringing with it free food samples from local businesses. Organizers said the 2018 concert series may have been the most-attended yet. Roberts estimated last year’s concerts drew a couple hundred, if not

500, more attendees, than last year’s series. “It’s been good overall,” he said. Roberts said that amid the excitement – music, food, raffles and other fun activities – that he often doesn’t get a solid count on the number of attendees. He noted the 50/50 raffle is sometimes a good indicator. “The 50/50 Daryl Magill is raffle was up a bit over last year,” he said. This year’s winnings ranged from $190 to $347 each night, Roberts estimated. The crowd is more apparent, he said, on “big draw nights,” when popular musical acts like

a popular performer in Granville’s summer concert series. Daryl Magill’s, and Harold Ford & the Cash Band play at the bandstand. The Granville Summer Concert Series is made possible in part by public funds from the New York State

Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered locally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council and title sponsor Great Meadow Federal Credit Union.

New Vermont license/ID will allow third gender option Theater in the Woods Vermont

A third gender option will soon be offered on driver’s licenses and ID cards in order to serve Vermonters better. When the Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) begins to roll out new credentials this summer, nonbinary Vermonters or those who do not identify as either male or female will have the option to select “other” for their gender. “When an ID does not match the gender identity or expression of the holder, the person can be exposed to potentially uncomfortable situations,” said DMV Commissioner Wanda Minoli. “Thanks in large part to the hard work of Vermonters in the LGBTQ community, we saw an opportunity to allow a third gender option for increased safety and inclusion of all Vermonters.” The change to three gender options was a decision made during the planning process for the new driver’s license system, called VTPICS (vtpics.vermont.gov), Minoli said. Applications for credentials, including Commercial Driver’s Licenses and

Enhanced Licenses, will list the third option as “other,” and the marking on the credential or license under gender will be “X.” This decision was made with direction from members of LGBTQIA Alliance of Vermont, which preferred “X,” Minoli said. “Offering a third gender option on driver’s licenses is consistent with our Vermont values of inclusion and acceptance,” added Governor Phil Scott. “Obtaining a driver’s license that correctly reflects who you are is something we may take for granted. This change is an important step forward in advancing equality for LGBTQ Vermonters.” “Vermont is a state that prides itself on individualism and freedom,” said Brenda Churchill, Statehouse Liaison for the LGBTQIA Alliance of Vermont. “To have a third gender designation on one of the first legal documents a Vermonter can possess that indicates they do not identify as male or female is recognition they exist – legally and fully – in society.” Vermont law has long recognized that gender identity

may differ from sex assigned at birth. In 2007, state statute (1 V.S.A. § 144) defined gender identity as “an individual’s actual or perceived gender identity . . . regardless of the individual’s assigned sex at birth.” “The third gender option is appropriate for Vermont, and this is the right time to make the change to credentials as we move to VTPICS,” Minoli said. Vermont joins at least ten US jurisdictions that currently issue identity documents with nonbinary gender markers: Arkansas, California, Colorado, Washington DC, Maine, Minnesota, New York City, Oregon, Utah and Washington.

Squad open house, tours, demos, pancakes April 14 By Krystle S. Morey Granville Rescue Squad will open its doors to the public next Sunday, offering free tours, demonstrations and other activities. The April 14 event includes breakfast from 7 a.m. to noon, which will include pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs and more. Michael Zinn, assistant captain, said the squad’s annual open house is a good way for first responders to

get to know the community and for the community to get to know the first responders. “Come see what we are about,” he said. Squad members will show off life-saving equipment with demonstrations and offer various building and ambulance tours. The squad’s Argo allterrain vehicle and heart monitors will be on display. “We try to have one piece of all of the equipment that we have out,” Zinn said.

Included with the gear will be a note explaining how much each cost the squad and what it is used for. Information about upcoming CPR/AED, Stop the Bleed and first aid classes will also be available. Zinn said about 200 people usually attend the breakfast and open house each year. Some community members who tour the facility may also want to volunteer. “We will have members on hand that can speak to anyone

The squad rooms, which can be reached at 518-642-1830, are located at 64 East Potter Ave.
