Poetry and the good earth in April By Jan Jones, director of Castleton Free Library We will be celebrating poetry and the renewing earth throughout April at Castleton Free Library. National Poetry Month was inaugurated by the Academy of American Poets in 1996 and has since become one of the largest literary celebrations in the world, honoring poetry’s vital place in our culture. Thursday, April 18, is Poem in Your Pocket Day. Adult services librarian Mary Kearns has poems ready now – come by anytime to select one and then carry it with you on the 18th to share with others at school, in the library, at your workplace, on a street corner and on social media using the hashtag #pocketpoem. Or come borrow a book from our adult and children’s poetry collection and select your own poem. Local poets from Castleton and Hubbardton will present a reading of new and older work on Tuesday, April 23, at 7 p.m. Join us at this free program to hear Michael Alter, Megaera Fitch, Julie Merwin, Tom Smith and Joyce Thomas.

Many know Meg as our former adult services librarian. Tom and Joyce are both beloved retired Castleton State College professors. As Joyce reminded us, “April 23rd is Shakespeare’s birthday! What could be better?” After the program there will be refreshments and a chance to mingle. On Monday April 22, we’ll be celebrating Earth Day with a Story and Poetry Walk for all ages. As part of our monthly Family Night series, this event is free and open to all, but we ask that you sign up by calling the library at 802-4685574, emailing castletonfreelibrary@gmail.com or sending a message via Facebook. Let us know the number and ages of children attending to aid in planning and leave your contact information. The program will run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Dress appropriately for the outdoor weather – we suggest walking shoes and old clothes – as most of the evening will be spent outdoors. The terrain will be easy, with multiple stops along the way featuring earth stories, poems, envi-

ronmental information and short activities. If we need to postpone for bad weather, we’ll make the decision by 4 p.m. that day and send messages to all who registered. We’re now at the end of National Library Week, but remember its important message: Libraries = Strong Communities. Throughout April, please share your library stories – add to our memory board in the library, or use social media to participate in #MyLibraryMyStory. The American Library Association challenges you to post photos, videos, or text highlighting what you love about your library, whether it’s a way your library brings your community together or a few of your favorite library resources and activities. Share using the hashtag #MyLibraryMyStory on Twitter or Instagram or on the I Love Libraries Facebook page for a chance to win a $100 VISA gift card. The promotion ends tomorrow, Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. Be sure to tag us, too – @castletonfreelibrary on Facebook and Instagram.

Second Chance benefit for Brodie Second Chance Animal Center in Arlington will host a bingo night and basket raffle to benefit one of the center’s canine residents on Friday, April 12, beginning at 5 p.m., at First Brodie Baptist Church in Bennington. “One of the most important programs at Second Chance is the medical care of our shelter animals as we prepare them for adoption. This includes spaying and neutering, dental treatments, medication and other surgeries necessary before our veterinarians declare an animal healthy and ready for adoption,” said Cathi Comar, executive director of Second Chance. “Sometimes, though, a young and healthy animal will need specialized orthopedic surgery before we can make him available for adoption, and sometimes that surgery goes far beyond what we project in our annual operating budget,” she said. This is the case with Brodie, a one-year-old mixed breed with luxating patellae and rotated tibiae.

Arlington community calendar launched The Arlington Area Renewal Project has launched a new community calendar for both residents and visitors to the Arlington, Sandgate and Sunderland area. The community calendar is designed to include all events happening in and around Arlington. Fundraisers, community dinners, farmers markets, cultural, educational and recreational events, as well as long-standing community anchor events like graduation, the Duck Derby, the Arlington Fire Department’s Summer Carnival, St. James’ Norman’s Attic, Harvest Fest, and the Annual Arlington Rescue Squad’s Harvest Dinner are just some of the vast array of calendar listings. Project director Holly Bakke said, “Our community has such a wide variety of activities and, to date, there has been no central location for residents and visitors to access all of them. Organizations can now check

the calendar to make sure their events don’t conflict with others previously scheduled. This will offer the opportunity for each organization to maximize community participation. We encourage all to submit activities for inclusion in the calendar and all residents and visitors to check the calendar regularly to see what’s happening.” The community calendar is accessible through the Arlington Area Renewal Project website at www.arlington-vermont.com/events. The Martha Canfield Library will manage calendar submissions and event postings. Calendar submissions should be sent to arlingtonvtcalendar@gmail. com. The Arlington Area Renewal Project is a volunteer group of involved residents focused on collaborating for the common good by bridging our long tradition with a vision for future opportunities.
