Autumn Leaves Car Show Sept. 29 When the leaves begin to turn bright red- and ambercolored in Granville, that means the Autumn Leaves Car Show – and fall – are just around the corner. Each year, the show draws hundreds of classic and custom car enthusiasts to the Granville Little League Complex on Glen Street in the village on the last Sunday of September. The 33rd annual event, hosted by the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce, is set for Sunday,
Sept. 29. Hundreds of people from across the region attend each year. “They come from all over,” said Denise Davies, the chamber’s corresponding secretary. “There are locals that come, but there are people from the Albany area, Vermont … and there are some who come from three or four hours away.” All different types of vehicles can be seen on display at Autumn Leaves, from trucks to motorcycles

and classic cars to hot rods. More than 200 cars are displayed each year. New last year, the Chamber removed its requirement to have all likevehicles park with their classifications. Many participants travel in groups and their vehicles were often in multiple classifications. By removing the classification system people can now park with the group they come with. Davies mentioned that many car shows are changing the format, so the Granville Chamber of Commerce, which hosts the show each year, decided to do the same. Those wishing to display their car, motorcycle or truck in the show can enter from 8 to 11 a.m. on the day of the event at a cost of $20. Participants receive a slate dash plaque, donated by a local slate company; a goodie bag; two door prize tickets; a gas card drawing ticket; and a 2019 Autumn Leaves Car Show commemorative T-shirt. “Top 50” cars and others including Best of Show, Most Chrome, Best Paint Job, Furthest Distance Traveled, Most Likely to Get Pulled Over and more are recognized. Together with the “Major Show Sponsor” awards participants have a lot of opportunity to bring home an award! On the day of the event, show cars enter the complex via the Prospect-Glen
Street entrance. Spectators can view the cars from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. They enter from the North Quaker Street entrance. Admission is $3, with youths 15 and under admitted free. Each spectator receives one ticket that will be entered in the drawing for door prizes. Davies said the door prizes each year are “excellent.” Prizes up for grabs at past events included an LG 49-inch 4K ultra-high definition smart TV and a Kindle Fire 10.1 tablet. Last year the door prize was $500 cash!! The show also features auto trivia, food and music. Food, beverages and ice cream are sold by local organizations and businesses including Stewart’s Shops, Dunkin Donuts, Edward’s Market, and the Rotary Club. Music is provided by local artist Steven “Skeeter” Morse, and each year there is an auto trivia challenge, which will test attendees’ knowledge of car accessories, motors and more. Several chamber of commerce members will also set up information booths at the event. Past vendors included Warner’s Auto and Tyler Outdoor Services. “It gets better each year, our President Jenine Macura has been introducing new and different ideas to make it a day for everyone to enjoy” Davies said. Serving Our Community What the historic plaque reads.... The Village of Granville, N.Y. incorporated in 1885, traces its roots to “Bishops Corners,” a pioneer settlement begun here in 1780 by John Champion Bishop, his wife Abigail Reynolds, and their children. The Bishops purchased 2,000 acres within the presentday bounds of the village and at these corners built their home and trading post. Within two decades they had established an ashery, an iron foundry and a grist mill and helped to organize Granville Friend’s Society. By 1798, “The Corners” numbered 480 residents.

The Town-Wide Yard Sale takes place the weekend after Mother’s Day in May. It is not only a social event for friends and neighbors, it draws new visitors to the community. The last Sunday in September is the Autumn Leaves Car Show, the largest fundraiser for the chamber. Last year was the event’s 32nd anniversary and it featured 180 show cars and drew more than 600 spectators from throughout New York and Vermont. The chamber also participates in the largest event of the year, the Lighting of the Tree and Santa’s Visit in the Park as part of the First Friday holiday events in December. It has grown into an incredible event. The chamber provides wagon rides throughout the evening as well as the gifts that are handed out. This year 288 children visited with and received a gift

Village readies summer concert series Each summer, Veterans Memorial Park in the Village of Granville comes alive. Residents and visitors set up their blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy a slate of musical acts, food tasting events and other fun activities, all part of the Granville Summer Concert Series. Concerts run on Thursday evenings in June, July and August, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of West Main and Quaker streets, with the occasional special concert by the PoultneyGranville Town Band on select Sundays throughout the summer. Whiskey River and the American Longboards are among the returning crowdpleasers. Skippy and the Pistons, a Saratoga-based
classic rock band; and Studio Two, a Beatles Tribute Band out of New Hampshire, are two new acts. “We try to mix it up,” said village clerk Rick Roberts. “We’ve got some country, oldies … party/ wedding bands…” “It’s a 50/50 deal… half are new and half are coming back,” he said. On Aug. 22, the Washington County Band will return in August after a several-year hiatus from the series. “They haven’t been here in three or four years,” Roberts said. “It’s more of a family thing. A lot of people know someone who plays in the band.” Attendance is free. There are often activities that run in tandem with the concerts, such as strawberry
socials, fireworks, chicken barbecues and more. On July 25, Daryl Magill and the Sass and Brass band will take the stage – an act sure to get the crowd dancing and singing along. Granville’s Taste of the Slate Valley will run simultaneously, bringing with it free food samples from local businesses. Organizers said the 2018 concert series may have been the most-attended yet. Roberts estimated last year’s concerts drew a couple hundred, if not 500, more attendees, than last year’s series. “It’s been good overall,” he said. Roberts said that amid the excitement – music, food, raffles and other fun activities – that he often doesn’t get a solid count on the number of attendees.
He noted the 50/50 raffle is sometimes a good indicator. “The 50/50 raffle was up a bit over last year,” he said. This year’s winnings ranged from $190 to $347 each night, Roberts estimated. The crowd is more apparent, he said, on “big draw nights,” when popular musical acts like Daryl Magill’s and the Sass and Brass Band, and Harold Ford & the Cash Band play at the bandstand. The Granville Summer Concert Series is made possible in part by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administered locally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council and title sponsor Great Meadow Federal Credit Union.

Serving Our Community
'Golden Opportunity Starts Here' The message “Golden Opportunity Starts Here” is a fairly new theme adopted by the District. Hopefully students, parents, faculty, staff, visitors, and community members have noticed the banners displaying this message upon entering and traveling through the halls of all three of our campuses. “Golden Opportunity Starts Here” is more than just words printed on these banners. They truly define what the District provides to all of our students, and we should never take these golden opportunities for granted. Being able to offer
college credit bearing courses, programs for advanced academic study, enrichment opportunities, technical training, and support services simultaneously, is not the norm in smaller rural schools. We accomplish this year after year by having an entire community dedicated to the importance of a quality education for our children. Our district is fortunate to have strong community support, with many businesses, organizations, and individuals bridging the gap between school and community. This partner-
ship is essential for our continued growth, development, and future. The community support ranges from volunteer and fundraising efforts to enhance the many diverse activities offered by the district; sponsorships through financial support and/or donations of supplies and materials; as well as community leaders and members offering their time and expertise to help shape our students into becoming successful members of our community and beyond. This support is also very broad-based as it spans academics, athletics, tech-
nology, music, visual arts, performing arts, life skills, real-life work experience, and more. Our wonderful community truly supports the “Golden Opportunities” that we encourage our students to take full advantage of. The District would like to thank all who are committed our school, our community, and our students. All are invited and encouraged to keep up the great things our future leaders are doing by visiting our website www.granvillecsd. org and/or following us on Twitter at granville_csd.

Granville's Slate King dead at 53 Large crowd attends funeral services By Bern Zovistoski Saturday, Feb. 8 -Hugh W. Hughes, the slate king, died at his home in Granville, N.Y., this morning, aged 53 years. Mr. Hughes came to this country from Wales while a youth and built up one of the largest industries in roofing slate in the United States. He was very wealthy. That’s how, in 1890, a newspaper in western New York reported the death of “the slate king,” who amassed a fortune operating quarries in the Slate Valley that straddles the New York-Vermont border. His home in Granville was filled with mourners for his funeral, while some 300 more gathered respectfully outside. More than 800 people passed by his red cedar casket, lined with fine silk and satin and covered with black silk plush with silver mountings. The casket cost $400 and was reportedly the finest ever seen in Granville. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. J.C. Russum, a Methodist pastor. A Welsh hymn began the service and Rev. Edward Roberts spoke in Welsh about Hughes and his vital contributions to the Welsh community. The singing of “Nearer My God to Thee” by Miss E.E.

Morgan concluded the service. The procession to the cemetery required 75 carriages to accommodate the mourners. His final resting place – marked by an imposing monument still evident today – is in Elmwood Cemetery in Middle Granville, where his casket was interred in a brick-lined grave containing a stone box that was sealed. “The slate king” was born on Christmas Day 1836 in the North Wales community of Tirion Pelyn, one of nine children. His birthplace was also a rich slate-producing region and the Welsh families sent their children at an early age to work in the quarries owned by rich Englishmen. No education was available except for the Welsh Sunday School. At the age of 21, with about three dollars in his pocket, he came to the United States to seek his fortune, making his way to Dolgeville, Wisconsin, to find work in the lead mines there. Learning that there was a growing Welsh community in the Slate Valley, Hughes moved back east and took a job at the Scotch Hill quarry owned by Evan Lloyd in Fair Haven, Vermont. With a friend, William Jones, Hughes went to Georgia but the men returned to Lloyd’s quarry when the Civil War broke out to

That’s where Hughes met and married Sarah Lenning. Hughes’ fortunes began to improve in 1865 and he moved into the Washington Hotel in Granville after selling a quarry lease in Fair Haven for a $400 profit. From Granville, he drove his horse and buggy to Hampton where he had leased a quarry. With the profits from that quarry, he purchased a profitable quarry for $8,000 in West Pawlet, Vermont. He went on to take control of the quarries that produced most of the rare red slate that made the region famous and was described as the largest shipper of slate in the country, reportedly manufacturing and selling 43,000 squares from his quarries, as well as 14,000 squares of sea green slate and 2,200 squares of red slate that he purchased from other operators. The home he purchased in Granville, which stood beside the present Pember Library and Museum, cost $7,000, more than any other home in the area at the time. Hughes and his wife turned it into a showcase, with expensive furnishings and paintings and antiques from his native Wales. Hughes helped found the Granville National

He was also a director of the Salem National Bank. He reportedly said that his daily routine was to visit to his quarries, open his mail, then go to the bank and ask the cashier if there was still plenty of money in the state. Hughes could neither read nor write in any language, although he learned to sign his name with a flourish, giving the impression of literacy. Hughes was described as a man with a strong will to accomplish what he set out to do, an asset that completely disarmed his rivals. At his death, he had an estate worth $125,000 as The massive grave site of Granville's Slate King at Elmwood well as a $15,000 insurance policy, which by Cemetery in Middle Granville.
