Fair Haven Concerned: Helping its neighbors Mother Teresa once said that she wanted people to be concerned about their neighbors. She then followed her statement with an urgent question, “Do you know your neighbor?” Fair Haven Concerned can answer that with a resounding “yes.” The organization, established in 1983 as part of the United Way of Rutland County, has been helping its neighbors in and around Fair Haven by providing food to fill bare cupboards and fuel to heat cold rooms. But there was more they knew they could do. “It was a small, small fuel fund,” said executive
director Ashley Bride. In 2015, after surveying the community asking what other needs there were in the area, they opened The Second Chance Thrift Shop on Main Street in Fair Haven. “It was clear by the responses we were on track with providing food and fuel, but there was more we could do,” Bride said. “There was a need for a place where people could get affordable clothing.” Since opening its doors in February 2016, the shop has recirculated tons of new and used clothing in western Rutland County, eastern Washington County

of New York and beyond. The shop also serves another purpose that is often forgotten in the world – the non-profit. “Second Chance Thrift Shop helps Fair Haven Concerned cover some of its operational expenses,” Bride said, a much-needed boost to the budget as grant money dwindles, leading those awarding to ask a caveat to the check. That is, monies granted cannot be used for operational costs. “There is still a need for covering those costs,” Bride said. “and the store has become a valued part of our mission as we reach more of our neighbors with food, fuel and now clothing.” Fair Haven Concerned moved to its Main Street location, where the store is also located, in 2015, elevating public awareness in the community. The organization provides such crucial services as healthcare, emotional support and advocacy, shelter, food, clothing, budgeting, emergency funds, transportation and hope for the holidays. All services are available to anyone in Fair Haven or West Haven free of charge, regardless of social status, creed, race, age or any other difference. Throughout the year, Fair Haven Concerned hosts various fundraisers and charitable events, so anyone who is interested in helping the organization can do so by participating in any of these events. The events are continually posted on the group’s Facebook page. Fair Haven Concerned also works with various organizations and business-

es throughout the year to put on other communityoriented events. The organization recently teamed up with Shaw’s Market in which the grocer donated bags for The Second Chance Thrift Shop’s “fill-a-bag” event. Shoppers are invited to take a Shaw’s bag and fill it with items all for just 10 dollars, Bride said. Recently, Shaw’s and Fair Haven Concerned partnered for a “Fresh Recovery” program in which the grocer donates food it would typically toss in favor of fresh stock. Just this past year Fair Haven Concerned received more than 13,000 pounds of donated food items. “That can be anything from bread and hot dogs to yogurt and butter,” Bride said. Fair Haven Concerned will again be teaming up with the American Legion in hosting an Easter event for families. Bride is hoping to top last year’s whopping 3,000 eggs that were hunted by the children. “They had a lot of eggs,” Bride said. “We were out of eggs in five minutes.” And when prom season comes around, the thrift shop is a place where teenage girls can find affordable gowns. “We really can’t thank all the community groups and businesses for all their help and support,” Bride said. For more information visit Fair Haven Concerned at 49 Main St., call 802-2653666, email fhci@comcast. net or visit their Facebook page. A website for the nonprofit is expected to launch later this spring.

THE “HEART” OF FAIR HAVEN I was born and raised in Poultney. I live in Castleton and play on Lake Bomoseen, but I work in the “Heart” of Fair Haven. Like others in the Fair Haven Community, we work hard to innovate, create and make our Business District attractive to the public who pass through. Take a look at our beautiful park, our beautiful “skyscrapers”. Listen to the concerts in the park. Count the smiles on the faces of our children and our citizens. Fair Haven is not only open for business, but it is a wonderful place to spend time. Like many competent lawyers in Rutland County, we strive to competently advise and represent our clients, while fitting into our rural Vermont setting. Fair Haven Business District is filled with business people who seek to serve the public and provide the services or commodities that are needed in our community. My assistant, Linda Way, and I try to be courteous, efficient and offer the best possible representation, consultation and advice. Every client is different, but when they visit our office, we see a need for them to be relaxed and comfortable. Our eclectic collection of memorabilia from the past centuries is enjoyable to most, but our state of the art business equipment allows a great degree of efficiency to assist in our client’s needs. My office offers expertise in probate practice, family law, real estate, civil law and personal injury. Fair Haven is a unique place and offers may goods and services. I am proud to work in this community, in the “Heart” of Fair Haven.

Fair Haven Summer Concerts in the Park Each summer hundreds of music lovers travel to the Village Green to enjoy the sweet sounds of the annual Fair Haven Summer Concert Series. Ceil Hunt, who serves on the concert committee, said 500 to 600 people from across the region bring their lawn chairs and blankets to the park to listen each Thursday night. “It’s growing every year,” said Hunt. “We run out of space for people to park.” This year’s series runs from June 13 to Aug. 22. There will not be a concert on July 4. Starting at 7 p.m., area bands such as Blue Jay Way, the Starline Rhythm Boys and Catamount Crossing perform
hits from a variety of genres from Honky Tonk to Bluegrass and Country to Rock & Roll. “We had such a wonderful outpouring for our bands last year we brought everybody back,” said Hunt. Hunt said concertgoers are of all ages. “That’s what we go for, that’s why we change up the style every week,” she said. It’s not unusual to see infants at the concerts, young children playing kickball in the park and senior citizens singing along to the tunes, Hunt said. This year, Vermont’s own Starline Rhythm Boys kicks off the season with the first concert June 13. This Honky Tonk band will get attendees
dancing and singing to classic country songs from the 1950’s and 1960’s. “You’ll see a lot of people singing along, tapping their feet,” Hunt said. “It’s just a great atmosphere.” Irish band JP Murphy will cap off the season on Aug. 22. “It just became sort of a tradition,” said Hunt of JP Murphy closing out the season. “It’s always very well attended.” The series started off featuring only eight concerts each year. Now 10 performing groups take the stage on the gazeebo in the Village Green. Demand, Hunt said, has grown the series. There’s not just musical fun to be had in the park. Hot dogs, popcorn, soda and
water are also sold. This year the concert will feature four free ice cream nights. Tickets for a 50/50 drawing are sold at each concert. Annually, $2,000 of the raffle proceeds are awarded as a scholarship to a graduating senior at Fair Haven Union High School who plans to study music. Another $1,000 is donated to Dodge House, which assists homeless veterans in Rutland. The remaining funds go toward defraying the cost of the concerts, including band costs and portable toilets, Hunt said. The concert series is funded by the Town of Fair Haven. Spring Fling kicks off Memorial Day The snows will have melted and been replaced with budding trees and sprouting grass as the region’s residents begin tilling the soil, planting vegetables and flower gardens. American flags also begin to appear with increasing frequency in front of homes and businesses reminding folks not only of Memorial Day but also that Spring Fling time in Fair Haven is upon them. Organized by the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce, the 2019 Spring Fling will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 on the Fair Haven Town Green. The event is hosted concurrently with the Memorial Day parade. A perennial favorite with the community, Spring Fling has hosted up to 40 vendors in years past. The Chamber hopes that number grows this year. Offerings include carnival-type games, food vendors selling hamburgers, French fries, shaved ice, maple products and more; arts and crafts vendors offering everything from handmade jewelry to wooden toys as well as others. There are also many local groups with tables, such as the Cub Scouts and the Fair Haven Historical Society. To whet your appetites further, a chicken barbecue will also be hosted. Volunteers from the chamber, which has 33 members, begin setting up for Spring Fling early in the morning, with vendors showing up soon afterward to put the finishing touches on their displays.

Throughout the day, hundreds of people swing by and wander through the Green, taking in the sights, buying a trinket or two, eating a delicious treat and, odds are, especially in a small, tightknit community like Fair Haven, catching up with neighbors and friends. During the early afternoon, attention turns to the annual Memorial Day parade, which will be organized by a special Parade Committee this year. The parade begins immediately after an American Legion Post 49 ceremony honoring this nation’s veterans, which is held at the memorial at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets. The parade begins and ends here, usually starting at 1:30 p.m. In past years, the parade has featured marchers from the local fire department and Little League teams. Old cars have also graced the parade route, ushering in the unofficial start of summer in Fair Haven style. For further information about Spring Fling, contact the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce at 265-8600 or check out their website at www.vtlakesregionchamber. org. Vendor registration forms can be found and downloaded at the site.

Fair Haven Boys and Girls Club For ‘the kids who need us the most’ Though only in its second year of operation, the Fair Haven Boys and Girls Club is fast gaining traction in the community. The club was formed in 2017 after residents saw a need for an afterschool program to keep students busy, but more importantly, safe. “I got to know the community a little bit and read the newspapers about the issues they were having,” said Larry Bayle, executive director of the club. The issues Bayle refers to are prevalent in many local communities, both in Vermont and New York – few if any afterschool activities coupled with an ongoing opioid epidemic which combine to create an overall negative environment for students. “The same issues all of Vermont towns are having,” Bayle said. “A lot of the kids didn’t have anything to do after school and the whole Rutland County, historically, has had the…distinction of being one of the more prominent drug centers in the state of Vermont.” After reading about the death of a Fair Haven woman in 2017, Bayle said he was galvanized into action, approaching both the Town of Fair Haven Selectboard and school administrators, pitching the idea for what is now known as the Boys and Girls Club. “We approached the Selectboard and we approached the principal at the school and they were all in favor of it,” said Bayle. The program, which Bayle described as being a
“school-based model,” meets at the school, Monday through Friday, thus eliminating the need for any tricky logistics. “It just make sense – there’s no transportation needed for the kids,” said Bayle. Each club session begins with allowing the kids to settle in and consume a snack, after which time the focus is on “homework support.” In addition to plenty of indoor and outdoor activities, a couple days every week the club hosts an “early age prevention program.” “Our program is geared towards all kids,” Bayle said, “but specifically kids that need us the most.” Field trips are another defining staple of the club, with the boys and girls trekking to neighboring colleges When the school year ends, the Boys and Girls Club continues on, with a summer camp, also held at the Fair Haven Grade School. Bayle described the camp as being a “recreation model” with numerous sports professionals attending, instructing the kids on sports such as tennis, fishing, basketball and softball, all while still stressing academics. Enrollment in the club has doubled since its inception, a fact which Bayle attributes to the efforts of unit director John Pedone. For parents interested in enrolling their child, ages 6-12, in the Fair Haven Boys and Girls Club, contact the Fair Haven Grade School at 802-265-3883.

Applefest: a community celebration It’s been the apple of Fair Haven’s eye for 30 terrific years. Yes, it’s Applefest, hosted by Fair Haven Grade School and a staple of the community, held annually on the “Green” in Fair Haven Park typically in September, coinciding with when summer begins to transition to autumn and of course what says autumnal fun better than apples? Applefest was started in 1990 by the Fair Haven Chamber of Commerce. A few years later, students and teachers of Fair Haven Grade School took the reins to raise money for school supplies and extracurricular activities. “It is a very important event and generates more
than just money for our school and student activities,” said school principal Wayne Cooke in a press release. “It is an opportunity for students, faculty, parents and our community to come together in a common interest.” Students host a variety of fun activities for the community to take part in and be involved with. Each grade has their own booth where they will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, sausages while some classes do crafts. One perennial favorite is the dunking booth, where passersby can take a shot at their “favorite” teacher. “Every class has some sort of booth,” said Fair Haven Historical Society president
Dedicated to exceptional quality and personal service.
Lorraine Brown. Vendors are also present including flea markets, crafters, games and many town merchants host sidewalk sales. “Our shared goal is to create and have a collaborative and profitable day for everyone.” Cooke said. Last year, the Fair Haven Rotary hosted a “Stuff-atruck,” where you can donate food and items to stock the food shelves of the less fortunate this winter. Of course an Apple Festival isn’t complete without an apple pie contest. Last year marked the 10th year of the Fair Haven Historical Society’s apple pie contest and apple decorating contest for grade school students.
The pie contest is open to nonprofessional bakers. Rules of entry are as follows: pie must be at least eight inches in diameter, wrapped in plastic; majority of fruit must be apples; bakers are allowed to use own pans but the entrants must retrieve them after contest. Judging is held at noon. After judging, pies will go on sale by the piece or the remaining pie can be purchased too. For the decorating contest, entrants must use realistic foam apples that can be purchased from the historical society for two dollars. The reason for the foam apples is they prevent bees. All grade school students are eligible.

Carver Falls: A hidden gem Many locals may not believe it, but there is a 126foot waterfall right in their backyards. Carver Falls is on the Poultney River, along the Vermont-New York border. Water falls over the course of three drops. A dam is located at the top of the first fall so water there flows over a wide ledge and cascades beneath the penstock, then over the 30-foot high middle fall. After that fall, the river gathers in the plunge pool, before leaping over the final 65-foot drop into the pool below. In periods of very low water, the plunge pool seeps into the heavily fractured bedrock and rises at the base of the lowest drop – it will actually well up like a spring at the base of the totally dry cliffs of the lower fall. The gorge below the falls is almost as impressive as the falls themselves; the walls are so steep one can clearly see the river 100-feet below. Of interesting note, the falls are not in their original location. A deceitful land surveyor from New York deliberately surveyed the
land in such a way as to have the waterfall on his property. The surveyor was hoping to harness the power of the 126-feet high falls for his own lucrative ends – to power a mill. However, the victim of the scam didn’t take this decision sitting down. On his own property, the victim searched and searched, eventually finding a weak point in the river bank.

Having found it, the man went to work with pick and shovel, creating a trench for the river to run into. After that, nature took care of the rest. The running water began to erode the man-made gap in the bank and eventually the rivulet became a torrent and the torrent became the new Poultney River, dropping over the ledge in the current location of Carver Falls.

Fair Haven Classic Auto Car Show The classic car market is a hot one, with novices and connoisseurs alike making pilgrimages to metal meccas throughout the country. Luckily for car enthusiasts of the Green Mountain state, one such mecca of antique and classic metal can be found right in their backyard. For 14 years now the Vermont Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce has sponsored the Fair Haven Classic Auto Show the last Saturday in July. This year’s show, at Fair Haven’s Town Green, takes place on July 27 with registration beginning at 9 a.m. and judging commencing at 1 p.m. Kerry Fowler, Chamber president, said those attending can expect to see more than 100 vehicles. “We’ve run anywhere from 90 to, I think we had 138 vehicles one year,” Fowler
The Fair Haven Classic Car Show will return this year in July in the Park in Fair Haven. said. “It all depends on the weather.” Although a “classic auto show,” vintage cars are not the only thing on display. “We also have bikes, trucks, motor homes – any-
thing they want to bring on wheels,” said Fowler, adding that exhibits in years past have included old HarleyDavidson motorcycles, Model T trucks, two-cycle Saab cars and more.
“You never know what’s going to be here,” he said. The event is free and open to all. In addition to cars, tractors and motorcycles, there will be live music to entertain visitors. Fowler said judging will be wrapped up in early afternoon after which the top 25 cars will be named, including who claimed the oh-socoveted Best in Show honor. While a Vermont event, Fowler said car enthusiasts from throughout the region attend with some hailing as far north as Burlington and as far west as Glens Falls, New York. As people clear their endof-July schedules in anticipation of the auto show, Fowler is hoping the sun continues to shine as it has in years past. “We’ve never had to cancel on account of rain,” he said. For more information call Fowler at 802-345-0921.

Fair Haven’s memories preserved Do you remember the bridge at Carver’s Falls? How about the airport or the town trolley? After more than three years of interviewing residents, compiling stories and scanning old photographs, Fair Haven’s first memories book is complete. “We’re so excited about our book,” said Lorraine Brown of the Fair Haven Historical Society. The Historical Society published the “Memories of Fair Haven Book” to create a historical record of events from 1900 to date. “It’s not a history book,” Brown said. “Fair Haven has a very good history book up to 1900.” “Our purpose was for people to realize how important it is to document everything and to date it,” she said. The book, which has an accompanying audio CD, features stories from people who
live or grew up in Fair Haven. “There are people to remember, places to remember, businesses past and present…,” Brown said. It also features several old and never-before-seen photos that were obtained from private collections and original glass plates that were scanned. Historical Society members called residents, met people on the street and more to collect memories. One source, who remembered Fair Haven’s old theater, turned out to be one of the people who was at the movies when the blackout happened in the 1980s. Another helped gather photos of all three fountains that were installed in the park over the years. The Civics Club, which featured male business owners, and various businesses such as banks, pharmacies and funeral
parlors are also featured. “Those memories are in there,” Brown said. Many of the people who were interviewed for the book have since passed away. Brown said she was glad their stories are preserved because of this project and not lost. The common theme that kept emerging, Brown said, was: “It was a wonderful place to grow up.” Interviews, writing, editing, researching kept the Historical Society busy. The core team of volunteers consisted of Brown, Ceil Hunt and Ron Pesha. “And there were a lot of people who helped in other ways,” she said. Just because the book has been published doesn’t mean the memories have stopped filing in. The Historical Society already has some ideas for a possible second book. “I found out after we had
gone to print that there was a little ski area here,” Brown said. “It was up in the Maplewood Orchard area.” “And already, we have remembered a couple of things that we didn’t put in,” she said. “Memories of Fair Haven Book” and CD are available for purchase for $25 at the Historical Society Office in the Fair Haven municipal building on Mondays from 9:30-11 a.m. Copies can also be obtained by calling Brown at 802-265-3843 or Ceil Hunt at 802-265-7913. Books will also be available at the annual Charter Day Celebration at the Fair Haven Library. The celebration will take place on Oct. 16, beginning at 7 p.m. Those who have a Fair Haven memory to share should contact Brown or Hunt at the phone numbers listed above. They can also call the Historical Society office at 802-265-3010.
