Greenwich Profile Greenwich firefighters’ focus: training, education The Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department responded to 311 emergency calls in 2018, representing 1,982 hours for emergency response. The department clocked 7,640 hours of training and activities for its active members through the year and provided continuing training for its EMS members. Mike White, chief of the department, is a New York State fire instructor, so he has a first-hand appreciation of the value of training and education. “We provide all of this high-quality training for our fire department, and we have a large component of EMS members, too,” he said. “We thought we should extend continuing education to them as well.” The public also benefits from White’s focus on training and education. The department provides free “Stop the Bleed” training to teach the
public how to address severe bleeding and community CPR training on the third Wednesday of every month. “The more people who know CPR, the better the survival rate,” White said. In the last year, the department has also begun providing education for senior citizens. “Because we spend so much time in people’s homes, we see a lot of things that people do that aren’t safe, so we went into senior housing and did a program there.” The program includes demonstrations about what to do with combustibles on the stove, for example, and what happens when too many things are plugged into an extension cord. “We have a bus set up like a minihouse and are able to take people in and show them different scenarios that represent fire risk,” White said. The department is among the largest in the area. In addition to its 50

active members, Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department has five young people in its Explorer program. “My son just joined. He and the other Explorers have their own gear and they train right alongside us. The training they receive early on they’ll never forget,” White said. If you’d like to learn more about the department and its work in the community, look at its Facebook page, GreenwichFire12834Public. The page features firefighters of the week, pictures of trainings, reminders to check smoke alarms and much more. “I’m pretty big on public relations,” White laughed. “The more the public knows about what you’re doing, the more they understand how important it is. We try to educate.” For more information on Greenwich Volunteer Fire Department, call 518692-9002. The department is located at 60 Hill Street in Greenwich.

Greenwich Profile Greenwich Free Library, a vital community resource In 1902, a small group of local women saw the need for a public library and launched an initiative to establish the Greenwich Free Library. Today, the Greenwich Free Library provides not only free and open access to literature and information, but also technology, meeting spaces and cultural and educational experiences. The historic I.V.H. Gill Room offers the opportunity to research local history and genealogy, and the Community Room provides a place for meetings, programs and events. A robust schedule serves a variety of age groups. “We have programs run-
ning Monday through Friday,” said Early Literacy Coordinator Emilly Sargent. They range from Building Blocks PreK programs and After School at the Library programs like LEGO Club to French and Knitters groups and Hatha Yoga. Monthly exhibits with local artists and historical talks also are popular with area residents. For the visually impaired the library is equipped with a desktop video magnifier, large type and audio books and accessible e-books. There are eight public-access computers with highspeed internet and free WiFi access. In 2019, the library will complete
renovations that will create more meeting and classroom space in the basement and revamp the Gill Room. It’s a lot to manage, and it takes two full-time and five part-time staff members and 75 volunteers to get it all done. “We have a wonderful board, incredible staff, great volunteers and excellent community support,” library director Annie Miller said. “That makes all the difference.” The library is located at 148 Main Street in Greenwich. Visit www.greenwichfreelibrary.com for a schedule of events. For information or to become a volunteer, call 518-692-7157.

Chamber of Commerce Come join us! For over 29 years, the Greater Greenwich Chamber of Commerce (GGCC) has been providing services to the business community and the general community of Southern Washington County. The GGCC was organized in April of 1990 as an outgrowth of a Village Downtown Greenwich business organization, and has since grown to nearly 200 members from Washington County, Saratoga County and the Capital District. By working to support, promote and attract business in our local area, the GGCC strives to improve the quality of life in our region and improve and enhance the local business economy. There are a number of benefits to being a member
of the GGCC, some of which include 24/7 easy access to business information on our Member Directory page – www.greenwichchamber.org/directory.asp – and direct links to business websites. We also offer referrals to member businesses only and participate in many regional advertising programs to spread the word about the Greater Greenwich area and its many offerings. The GGCC is also able to offer quality CDPHP health insurance plans to business groups with more than one person in the business. The support of our members and that of other area businesses allows the GGCC to provide a number of great community events which have become

Greenwich Profile Elks Lodge No. 2223: Hospitality and good works The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks began as a theatrical social club in New York City that called itself the Jolly Corks. When one of its members died before Christmas in 1867, leaving his family destitute, the Jolly Corks decided that in addition to good fellowship, they needed a more enduring organization to serve those in need. The Elks were formed on Feb.16, 1868. Elks traveling to other cities spread the word about the organization. Soon there were requests for Elks lodges in cities other than New York. In response, the Elks asked the New York State Legislature for a charter authorizing the establishment of a Grand Lodge with the power to establish local lodges any-
where in the United States. In Greenwich, New York Lodge No. 2223 was formed in 1960. The lodge draws its membership from Greenwich, Argyle, Cambridge, Salem and Schuylerville and currently has 315 members. The Elks work with the national Elks to raise money to benefit people with cerebral palsy. A recent Corn Hole Tournament was a benefit for this New York State major project. “About 150 people showed up for corn hole,” said Jeff Yauger, vice president and house committee chairman, “and we raised $1,600 for cerebral palsy programs.” At its Ice Ball Tournament in February, the lodge raised about $800 for maintenance of the lodge’s driveway.

The Elks also sponsor high school scholarships, and six times a year host a kids craft project day. Recently, members helped rebuild a kitchen in Ballston Spa for homeless vets. In keeping with the Elks’ tradition of hospitality, the Elks’ large banquet hall on Bulson Road in Greenwich is a centerpiece of the Greenwich community. The hall seats 300 and is available for weddings, banquets and community events. It is the location of the lodge’s many breakfasts, dinners and craft fairs. For information on joining the Elks or to rent the banquet hall, call the lodge at 518-692-2061. Greenwich Elks Lodge No. 2223 is located at 130 Bulson Road in Greenwich.
