Spotlight: Pawlet treasurer reminisces Judy Coolidge retires after 38-year career Judy Coolidge retired recently after 38 years as treasurer of Pawlet, Vermont, the longest any person has held that position. Coolidge will be honored along with other recent Pawlet retirees at a party on Sunday, May 5, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Town Hall. She answered some questions about her tenure in Pawlet.
How did your job change over 38 years? The job itself did not change, but the way it is done has. The town treasurer is
responsible for maintaining the town’s financial records, collecting its revenues and paying its bills and working alongside the Selectmen in preparing budgets and tax rates. In March 1981 I had one checkbook and a handwritten ledger. I managed a budget of $200,000 for the town. In 2019 I have 17 bank accounts and a budget of $1.1 million. I started the job working two half-days per week and in time found I needed at least three full days. Initially I shared an office
with the town clerk and library, but in time received my own space. The last several years I have had a beautiful office in what was the Grange kitchen in the early days. Initially I started off with a typewriter and a calculator. Today I couldn’t get along without my computer. I specifically remember having to prepare tax bills by hand, a job I wasn’t sorry to see go away once we went to computer. Over the last couple

The gold rush in Vermont began in 1855.
Gold prospecting in Vermont The Arlington Vermont Lions Club will host a lecture and workshop on gold prospecting on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Martha Canfield Library in Arlington. Nothing exemplifies the American dream more than recreational gold prospecting. Only in this hobby can a person follow his dreams of striking it rich and actually have a chance of doing so. What are you waiting for? Join the modern recreational gold rush here in Vermont, by learning about Vermont gold rush history, gold panning techniques, the geology of gold prospecting in Vermont and how to read a river for gold locations. Hands-on gold-panning lessons will follow the lecture, so that everyone can learn how to pan for gold. This event is family-friend-
ly; kids will have a ton of fun. The Arlington Lions Club strives to improve the world within the community. Some of its humanitarian goals include cleaning and helping maintain the environment, back-toschool supply drives for local schools, collecting food items for local food shelves, a sight and hearing program and its seasonal projects like “Sand Buckets for Seniors.” Every donation collected stays in the community to help those in the community. The cost of this event is $10 for adults, $5 for children 10 and younger. Pre-registration is recommended but not required. For more information, call 802-503-6240 or email arlingtonvtlions@gmail.com. Martha Canfield Library, 528 E. Arlington Rd., Arlington, Vermont.
Rutland Regional to offer class on achieving calm Rutland Regional Medical Center will offer a three-part class, “Peace and Calm in Chaos,” on Thursday, May 2, 9, and 16, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the CVPS/Leahy Community Education Center. The class will be taught by certified life coach Bonnie Olson. Inner chaos can take many forms in our outer lives, including burnout, health problems, financial distress and relationship issues. The most important thing to understand is that inner frenzy is what causes the outer chaos – not
the other way around. The sessions will include presentations on grounding and centering exercises, basic and guided meditation and ways to manage thoughts, each designed to help participants restore their inner balance. The cost for the course is $15.00, and advanced registration is required. For more information and to register, call 802-772-2400 or online at www.rrmc.org/classes-events. Rutland Regional Medical Center is located at 160 Allen St., Rutland, Vermont.

“I chose Vermont Sports Medicine Center because my physician recommended them and they are close to my home. My therapist, Jackie, and the staff are committed to helping me recover from my injury. They are so kind and considerate of my abilities and pain levels. They are very helpful and aware of what activities were needed to make progress in my recovery. They encouraged me every step of the way. I am very pleased with the progress I have made in a shorter period of time that I expected. I would highly recommend VSMC to anyone who needs physical therapy!” Photo (l to r): Jacquelyn Frasier, DPT & Janet Marchinkoski

Dinner and basket party for Matt Schinski A spaghetti dinner and basket party on Saturday, May 11, will benefit a Wells native who is currently recovering from a serious accident involving a snowmobile that occurred on Friday, March 22. The dinner and basket party will be held at the Knights of Columbus in Granville, New York. Doors will open at 4 p.m. for the benefit fundraiser, dinner will be served beginning at 5 p.m. and the basket raffle drawings will begin at 6:30 p.m. There also will be desserts for sale, a 50-50 raffle and door prizes. Matt Schinski, a 2001 Granville High School graduate and father of two, experienced extensive damage to both legs that has left him in need of intensive medical
Matt Schinski care, including multiple surgeries and skin grafting. Matt is self-employed and will be out of work for an extended period of time – in what would be a busy season
for him – during which he would earn the majority of the yearly income for his family. Any donations raised will be used for his hospital and related expenses, rehabilitation costs and caring for his family due to lost wages. Matt’s family thanks everyone in the community who already has provided generous support to Matt and his family over the past month. Please continue to keep them in your thoughts and prayers, and they hope to see you on May 11 as part of “Matt’s Road to Recovery.” Donations for the basket raffle are being sought. If you would like to donate items or baskets, call Ann Schinski at 802-287-2787. Knights of Columbus is located on Park Avenue in Granville, New York.
This week Twig remembers . . . Willy Rondeau Willy was pretty much a loner. He sat in a corner by himself and was a man of few words. One day, one of the four at my table was at a morning appointment and Willy stopped by and announced: “You’re not going to believe this, but I love to talk.” He started telling us these great stories. He started with his beautiful wife who won a singing
contest to Nashville. There was one seat left, cost $2,000 – now this was in the early 1950s – Willy paid cash and went. “I wasn’t about to let my beauty of a wife with that golden voice be down there with those cowboys.” He kept right on with tales about fishing with an old boy who took a liking to him. The limit for fish (overabundance)
was 17 per day trout. He went on and on as we sat and listened, mouths agape. From that day on he was back in his corner and never said much other than a short hello. God bless you, Willy, and thanks for those very special tales. You get what I mean . . . “Twig Remembers.”

Chaffee Art Center call for artwork for student exhibit The Chaffee Art Center will showcase young artists from dozens of Vermont schools and home school groups during its annual student exhibit “It’s All About the Arts.” The exhibit will open on Friday, May 3, and run through Friday, June 7. The museum welcomes entries from students in grades k-12 from Vermont public, private and home school groups. The show creates an opportunity for these talented young people to be inspired by seeing their work, and the works of others, displayed in the muse-
um’s professional gallery housed in an historic 1890s mansion. The exhibit will include, but is not limited to, entries in art media, theater, culinary arts, poetry, music, and literature. The exhibit receives many visitors because of the many schools that participate and the involvement of the community. Fees are $100 for high schools, $60 for other schools and $10 for each home school student. Multiple departments within a school are encouraged to join together for one fee.
Some scholarships are available to subsidize a reduced fee. Student artwork can be delivered to the museum on Thursday, April 25, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, April 26, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. To receive a student exhibit packet or for more information, contact Sherri at 802-7750356 or 802-353-6605 or email info@chaffeeartcenter.org. Chaffee Art Center is located at 16 S. Main St., Rutland, Vermont.
