ducted three seasons of archaeological research at the Galick site in West Haven, Vermont, and highlighted its use as a campsite and settlement over nearly 12,000 years of human history. According to Matthew Moriarty, coordinator of Castleton’s new archaeology, geography and applied anthropology program and the director of the project, the new grant will help the South Champlain Historical Ecology Project establish a digital database for artifacts from archaeological excavations and important local
private collections. Undergraduate interns and volunteers will be trained in this new technology and will be responsible for scanning and uploading artifacts to a new permanent, publicly accessible digital database that will be displayed on the Castleton University website. Moriarty suggested that this is only the beginning and said, “3D technology is the future of archaeology, and we are extremely grateful to the Champlain Valley National Heritage Partnership for helping us get started on this road.”

At the Pember, get ready for Peeps, ooohs and aaahs at its Peeps diorama contest. Did you know that in addition to populating Easter baskets, brightly colored marshmallow Peeps are a mainstay of artists and crafters, who use them to populate miniature dioramas? The Pember is providing its Granville visitors the opportunity to showcase their creativity by creating scenes populated with Peeps. A Peeple’s Choice Award will be given. The requirements are simple: Dioramas may be on any theme, as long as it is suitable for all audiences. Diorama parts should all fit inside a box with a maximum size of 15”x24”x15”. One or more sides of the box may be removed. All visible parts of the diorama should be decorated, and all characters in the scene should be made using Peeps. Participants can bring their dioramas to the Pember on Friday, May 3, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. They will remain on display until May 15. “We’re hoping that people get into the spirit and craft some terrific dioramas,” said Pember educator and curator Bernadette Hoffman. “We want to give everyone the chance to show off their creativity.” For more information about the contest, call the Pember at 518-642-1515. The Pember Library and Museum is located at 33 W. Main St., Granville, New York. For more information about the fly-fishing presentation, call the Slate Valley Museum at 518-642-1417. Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water St., Granville, New York.

Twig Remembers . . . Darwin Dokum, Jr. He was raised in the same building his dad was, 1 Caernarvon Street. The front door was on High Street, a U-shaped street that bent around a corner and back on to Fourth St. Down Caernarvon from the north is a brick house, on the left – John and Mary Beede – and next door after was a huge field that went with the old French Church that was home to Bob Laramie (Pie) who had been to the spring training sessions with the NY Giants. All the neighborhood kids were always out there playing ball. They turned out some pretty good players, best of which were All Star First Baseman Paul Laramie, All Star Third Baseman Bunt Beede and a very good pitcher, youngest of the Dokum boys, Jeff. Now, I really got to know Dar best when he and his cousin Cliff used to do Saturday country style breakfast at Dot’s Diner on Main St. in Poultney and stop in next door and visit and raise hell with Twig who was working at Williams
Hardware. At work, they were right after me, double trouble. We all three had a great time and couldn’t wait till the next Saturday. He was into his 90s when his legs weakened and he couldn’t get up and out. God sent a bit of an angel, his neighbor Mark Barsalow (a successful HS basketball coach). They were both history buffs and Mike would go over every late morning and the buffs came back in the afternoon for more of the local old days in Fair Haven. God bless you, Mike. God bless old Dar Dockum. If I ever had a historic question about Fair Haven, I’d check with Run Stockweiel and Dar. Dar, you know you are a hero to me. I was born November 30, 1943, and I was one of those little kids you were preserving all these freedoms and rights for as a U.S. Marine battling the Japanese on the Pacific Islands. God bless. GRCSU reaches consensus on two-year Master Agreement To the editor: The Greater Rutland County Supervisory Union (GRCSU) and its member district boards are pleased to announce that we have reached an agreement with the GRCSU Support Staff Education Association on the terms of a new Master Agreement. On April 24, 2019, the GRCSU and member dis-
wages each year and unified contract language for all districts in the supervisory union. This year the GRCSU initiated its operation following a complex Act 46 merger process where two supervisory unions merged to one and eight schools merged to four districts. The GRCSU provides oversight and administra-
trict boards met to approve the contract, which was previously ratified by the GRCSU Education Support Personnel Association. We are pleased with the positive collaborative approach that the Support Staff Association has taken in this round of bargaining. The agreement spans two years and provides for three percent new money for
tive services to member schools including Quarry Valley UUSD, Wells Springs UUSD, Rutland Town School District and Ira School District. Please contact me at 802775-4342 or debra.taylor@ grcsu.org for additional information. Dr. Debra Taylor, Superintendent

New theater festival has local roots, fresh approach to the bard Shakespeare in the Woods is a new outdoor classical theater festival scheduled to run from Thursday, August 22, to Sunday, September 8, in Hunter Park in Manchester, Vermont. The festival’s inaugural season lineup will include “Much Ado About Nothing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” and “The Taming of the Shrew.” “Shakespeare in the Woods is a celebration of classical text through a thought-provoking, unconventional lens, incorporating the wondrous offerings of southern Vermont’s natural landscape,” said festival founder Katharine Maness. Maness, originally from Pawlet, has returned to Vermont to establish this arts opportunity after spending over a decade building her acting career in New York City. She is committed to creating a professional-quality festival that feels like part of the community. The festival will engage with the community beyond performances, is intended for audiences of all ages and backgrounds and is built on the belief that the arts
are an integral part of society that should be accessible to everyone regardless of geographical location or socioeconomic standing. “I want to bring professional Shakespeare home and have the surrounding communities share in it, making great art accessible to all. My hope is that Shakespeare in the Woods will become an area tradition, one that builds on the strength of community while continuously pushing boundaries through the magic of live theater,” said Maness. The festival will require public interest and contributions to ensure that Maness’s vision is achieved. With a season fundraising goal of $50,000, public outreach began in January. As of early April, SitW has raised a fifth of its budget with over $10,000 in donations from local businesses including the Northshire Civic Center as venue host, the Northshire Bookstore and Ye Olde Tavern. Support also has come from more than a dozen individuals committed to supporting homegrown arts.
In addition to performances, the festival will run free workshops for area children, in which they can experience firsthand what goes into making theater and discover the potential there is for growing the performing arts community in southern Vermont. “I believe that providing kids access early on is essential to building a sustainable future for the arts right here at home,” said Maness. Shakespeare in the Woods is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a nonprofit arts service organization. Contributions for the charitable purposes of Shakespeare in the Woods must be made payable to “Fractured Atlas” and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law. Tickets will be available later this spring at $20 for general admission and $12 for children 12 years and younger. For more information on performance dates, information about the festival itself and how to become a supporter, visit www.shakespeareinthewoodsvt.com.
