may also contribute pet food. Food banks may be able to distribute or direct these contributions to pet shelters and organizations in areas that have a need. Overall, the national association provides critically needed goods to local food distribution centers in every state. The food drive’s timing – spring – is crucial. Food banks and pantries often receive most of their donations during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons. By springtime, many pantries are depleted and are entering the summer low on supplies at a time when many school breakfast and lunch programs are not available to children in need. Judy and John Reed The cleanup committee has no idea what a little square piece of paper with 80 names means to a writer. I remember some, like this one. Judy & John Reed, sweethearts since high school. Judy well how do I explain – just say it. She was easy to look at and she had a nice little shape. She was a captain of cheerleaders, all the way through. She was also Class Salutatorian, and this allowed for the many jobs she held in town (one was Town Treasurer.) She also handled the monies for the family swimming pool cleaning business. Big John what an athlete. One of the best first basemen, a great power forward and a great wide receiver (and long hands).

John was the foreman in metal stamping when I worked at Telescope Folding Furniture. We waited tables together at the Hampton Manor. We sent him home with a bad stomach and that was his last night there. Judy put down the law. It would be hard to find a couple who put more time in working with F.H. kids than these two. Thirty years guiding their own. The youngest, Scott, is still tops in goals in soccer and still in top ten scorers in basketball and he was first string all league shortstop too. How about 57 years married to the same person. God bless John & Judy Reed. Twig

Concept of race at Castleton Library May 16 Pawlet tea party benefit May 11 Castleton Free Library will welcome Professor William Edelglass for a Vermont Humanities Council event on Thursday, May 16, at 7 p.m. Edelglass will present a slide lecture entitled “A History of the Concept of Race.” The lecture will trace the intellectual history of the concept of race in the West, from its prehistory to the present time. “The first European to divide the peoples of the world into distinct races, in the seventeenth century, claimed that the Sami people of northern Scandinavia were one of four races on earth; Native Americans, Europeans, South Asians and North Africans together were considered a second race; while sub-Saharan Africans were the third and East Asians the fourth,” said Edelglass. “How did such a bizarre distinction among groups of people develop into one of the most historically significant ideas of the modern world?” Edelglass approaches this

William Edelglass question from a broad, interdisciplinary perspective. While his teaching post at Marlboro College is focused mainly on philosophy, particularly Buddhist and environmental studies, he has strong interest in questions of ethics, aesthetics and meaning. His course offerings and published works often pull in many other disciplines, including phenomenology and cli-

mate ethics, deep time, placebased pedagogy and the science of meditation. Edelglass is the principal scholar for the Brattleboro Words Project, which uses spatial storytelling to bring together the people and institutions of the area and creates a multilayered map to reflect the intersection of people, history and place. He has taught previously at Colby College, in a New York State federal prison and in Nepal. He presented a version of this lecture at the Indian Institute of Technology in Bombay last year. This program is free and open to all and is funded in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities. For more information, call Mary Kearns at 802-468-5574 or email castletonfreelibrary@ gmail.com. Castleton Free Library is located at 638 Main St., Castleton, Vermont.

Free day at Bennington Museum May 11 Bennington Museum will host a free day on Saturday May 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. One of many exhibits visitors will want to see is “Up Home: Hand-Colored Photographs by Susanne and Neil Rappaport.” At 11 a.m., visitors can join Eileen Travell, senior photographer for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, and museum curator Jamie Franklin for an up-close gallery exploration of the Rappaport exhibit. Minnie Griswold died in 1952, at which time her sons locked up their mother’s house in Pawlet, Vermont, and left all her belongings in place, untouched and unaltered. Thirty years later, Pawlet documentarians Susanne and Neil Rappaport were invited into Minnie’s home. The Rappaports went on to produce a collection of hand-colored photographs of her home and possessions. This exhibit brings together the best in documentary work and artistic expression. Between 1 and 4:30 p.m., visitors can try their hand at hand-coloring in the Paresky Wing to see how photographs take on a whole new dimension after being colored. At 3 p.m., visitors will want to join in the opening of new exhibit, “Color | Gesture: Early Works by Emily Mason,” on view through September 8 in the Works on Paper Gallery. For more than 60 years Emily Mason has been creating lyrical abstractions on canvas and paper, where her strong gestural marks contrast with

Today, she divides her time between New York City and Brattleboro, Vermont. Museum director Robert Wolterstorff said, “She freely recognizes that the work she creates in the two places is different. Her painting studio in Vermont has one entire wall that opens to the view. She revels in the natural world she encounters in Vermont, but never illustrates it. Like the words and phrases she collects, she also gathers visual impressions: the particular look of the wind tossing a flowering shrub, the texture of moss, morning light.”

‘Cooking for Karlie’ fundraiser a great success Mettawee Community School’s Girls on the Run program hosted a successful fundraiser for Karlie Gates and her family, raising approximately $10,000 on April 26. An estimated 450 people attended “Cooking for Karlie.” The evening included dinner and a silent auction of 100 items and a three-prize raffle. The event served as MCS/ GOTR’s Heart and Sole community impact project for 2019. Organizing coaches Kelli Lewis, Mandy Mayer, Sarah Warren, Linda Maness and Finley Mayer extended their thanks to all the attendees, donors and volunteers for their community spirit: “There are just way too many businesses and individuals to thank by name here in print, but please know that each and every one is deserving of our heartfelt thanks!” Gates is continuing her treatment for Hodgkin’s lymphoma and is regaining her strength.

Students from Mettawee Community School’s 2019 Girls on the Run program are pictured prior to their community impact project, “Cooking for Karlie,” a fundraiser for the benefit of MCS/GOTR graduate Karlie Gates and her family. Raffle winners include: Michael Krauss, who won an overnight at Whiteface Mountain Resort; Dawn Childs,

Dorset Players to perform Oklahoma!

first time home buyers, we’re here for you! with downpayments as low as 3%* and historically low interest rates. Contact a Mortgage Originator who can explain how our loans work and which options may be best for you.

The Dorset Players will bring down the curtain on their 91st anniversary season with “Oklahoma!” – considered one of the seminal musicals in Broadway history – on two weekends, Friday-Sunday, May 17-19 and May 24-26. Friday and Saturday evening performances will be at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. The first collaboration of legendary lyricist Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, the show was a game-changer when it took Broadway by storm in 1943. Memorable songs such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and “Oklahoma!,” advance the story of the cowboy Curly who falls for farm girl Laurey against the backdrop of prairie life in the Indian Territory circa 1907.

For four months, director Suzi Dorgeloh, musical director Tom Salmon and choreographer Kelly Gaiotti have worked with a talented cast of 23 from 17 area towns in Vermont and New York. Newcomer Josh Bond takes the lead as Curly, and Danielle Houston – who last appeared with The Players in the 2014 production of “Miracle on 34th Street” – is Laurey. Dana Haley as Ado Annie, the “girl who cain’t say no,” previously impressed audiences in The Players’ production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” Two actors fresh from leading roles in The Players’ “Witness for the Prosecution,” are Joe Mozer as Will Parker, who does his utmost to romance Ado Annie, and Drew Davidson portraying the tortured Jud Fry who pines for

Whitehall police arrest naked Vermont man By Matthew Saari A Vermont man faces a felony weapons charge following a nude run-in with Whitehall police. Police were dispatched to Upstate Discount Warehouse on Broadway to investigate an unknown disturbance on April 24 at noon and the responding officer was met with a naked man, identified as Joshua Moore, 40, of Fair Haven, running toward him demanding the officer’s gun. In response the officer deployed his baton and began issuing orders, which Moore

complied with after some reluctance. However, while prone on the ground, police said Moore attempted to get back to his feet, forcing the officer to threaten him with pepper spray. Police said Moore again complied and the officer was able to handcuff him. At this time a neighbor came to the scene with some pants, which the officer put on Moore. During the interview, the man oscillated between being calm and being aggressive and said he had taken “Euphoria.” As he was being put in the

back of the police cruiser, police said Moore complained of being cold so a state trooper retrieved his clothes, found in the parking lot of Upstate Discount Warehouse. While searching the clothes, the trooper found a loaded 9mm semiautomatic pistol. Moore then became uncooperative in the police car, getting his hands in front of him, putting the officer’s hat on his head, drinking the officer’s beverage and talking into the police radio. Police were able to calm him and put him in a car with a protective cage, after which he was transported to

Glens Falls Hospital for evaluation. Moore was released from the hospital on May 1 and charged with criminal possession of a weapon, a felony, and disorderly conduct, a violation. Police said the pistol was not registered to Moore but rather lent to him by a Vermont man. Regardless of ownership, Moore was charged because he does not possess a New York pistol permit for the weapon. Police are not sure why Moore was naked prior to the incident. Officer Jason Vandenburgh handled the arrest.

Course topics will include types of vessels, their parts, required safety equipment, basic navigation, safe anchoring, basic VHF radio operation, “rules of the road,” stand-on and give-way vessels, safe trailering and safe kayaking and paddle craft operation and more.
