Gardening workshop series to begin May 22 Gardening workshops are coming to Rutland’s southwest community garden this growing season. The series of five monthly programs are designed to help gardeners of all levels learn new techniques and skills throughout the growing season and address issues that may crop up in their gardens. The first workshop, “Making Your Bed: Starting Your Garden,” will be held on Wednesday, May 22, at 5:30 p.m. at 101 Allen Street’s Southeast Community Garden. Shrewsbury Institute for Agricultural Education is developing a demonstration garden at the Allen Street site and offering these programs in order to inspire Rutland residents to use the city’s community garden spaces and their own yards for gardening. Workshop instructor Scott Courcelle, who co-owns Alchemy Gardens in Shrewsbury, believes gardening is an act of personal empowerment. “I run a vegetable farm as my business, but when I get home from the fields I am eager to stroll around my home gardens tending to whatever needs to be done and watching how all of these amazing plants are developing over the course of the season,” he said. “There is so much to learn from the close observation of plants and so much peace and healing and satisfaction to be found in the act of gardening.” Rutland’s three community gardens are maintained and operated by Rutland Recreation and Parks Department with the mission to create opportunities for a more vibrant community. Program director April Cioffi says she is excited about these educational workshops

this summer. Said Cioffi, “Learning from a seasoned professional is an amazing opportunity for the community. It is our hope that these workshops grow the gardening community by empowering individuals who have wanted to grow their own food but do not know where to begin.” Courcelle wants new gardeners to feel encouraged by their successes and their failures in the garden. “Don’t let your worries about whether you are doing something right or not paralyze you from just getting out there and giving it a try,” he said. “If you watch closely, your garden will tell you what works well and what doesn’t. Oklahoma! to open this weekend The Dorset Players will bring down the curtain on their 91st anniversary season with “Oklahoma!” beginning this weekend. Performances will run Friday-Sunday, May 17-19 and May 24-26. Friday and Saturday evening performances will be at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. The first collaboration of legendary lyricist Richard Rodgers and librettist Oscar Hammerstein II, the show was a game-changer when it took Broadway by storm in 1943. Memorable songs such as “Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin’,” “People Will Say We’re in Love,” and “Oklahoma!,” advance the story of the cowboy Curly who falls for farm girl Laurey against the backdrop of prairie life in the Indian Territory circa 1907. For four months, director Suzi Dorgeloh, musical director Tom Salmon and choreographer Kelly Gaiotti have worked with a talented cast of 23 from 17 area towns in Vermont and New York. Newcomer Josh Bond takes the lead as Curly, and Danielle Houston – who last appeared with The Players in the 2014 production of “Miracle on 34th Street” – is Laurey. Dana Haley as Ado Annie,
Danielle Houston as Laurey and Josh Bond as Curly in the Dorset Playhouse production of “Oklahoma!” the “girl who cain’t say no,” previously impressed audiences in The Players’ production of “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.” Two actors fresh from leading roles in The Players’ “Witness for the Prosecution,” are Joe Mozer as Will Parker, who does his utmost to romance Ado Annie, and Drew Davidson portraying the tortured Jud Fry who pines for Laurey and cannot have her. Aunt Eller is played by Caren McVicker, a newcomer to the Dorset stage. The balance of the cast is peppered with new and familiar faces to Dorset audiences
including Christy Vogel, Richard Grip, Chris Restino, Billy Jamieson, Dan Silver, Errol Hill, Bill Cruikshank, Michael Gallagher, Lily Gallagher, Zachary Barnett, Bob Fogelgren, Sara Gregory, Maeve Keeton, Laura King, Lily Butler, Ginny Edinger and Annie Nash. Tickets are $30 for adults, $25 for members, $12 for those 18 and younger. For more information and to purchase tickets, call 802-8675777, visit www.dorsetplayers. org or visit the box office. Workshop on balance to be held in Rutland Rutland Regional to host workshop on balance Rehabilitation services staff at Rutland Regional Medical Center will host a workshop specifically addressing walking, balance and stability. Called “Gaining Traction: Improve your Walking, Balance, Mobility, and Stability,” the workshop will be held every Thursday, May 23-June 20, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the CVPS/Leahy Community Health Education Center at Rutland Regional Medical Center. Being klutzy is no longer a laughing matter. In fact, one of the most serious medical problems facing older people
is falling. After the age of 30, the muscles used to stand tall begin to weaken, stride length shortens and walking pace slows. However, aging isn’t the only reason people lose their sense of stability. With balance, you either “use it or lose it.” It’s possible to maintain stability with activity. In this program participants will learn the mechanics of walking; how various conditions such as arthritis, foot and joint issues and neurological problems affect gait; and strategies that can be used to compensate for these conditions. The workshop will cover setting realistic walking
goals, how to track progress using a pedometer and other technology, utilizing exercises that will enhance mobility and how to select appropriate footwear. At the conclusion of the program there will be a panel discussion with staff members from rehabilitative services followed by a walk around the Rutland Regional Loop, weather permitting. The cost of the workshop is $15. Registration is required. For more information or to register, visit www.rrmc.org or call 802-772-2400. Rutland Regional Medical Center is located at 160 Allen St., Rutland, Vermont.

Fair Haven Legion to distribute poppies By Elsie Ferman, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 49
Letters
the American Legion since 1921 when it was worn at its first national convention. Since then the American Legion Auxiliary has been the driving force behind the poppy program. Red isn’t the only color of poppy that’s worn in remembrance. Purple poppies are worn in remembrance of animals who have died serving in war. Some wear gold poppies in remembrance of the Indian soldiers lost in World War I, and
black poppies are worn in remembrance of the black African and Caribbean contributions to the war effort. And white poppies – also referred to as peace poppies – are worn as a symbol of opposition to war. Planned to coincide with the Memorial Day holiday the annual distribution of red poppies pays tribute to those veterans who have died in the last 99 years. It also honors the millions of Americans who have willingly served their country.
