The goal of the day – the nation’s largest annual health and wellness event for older adults – is to keep older Americans healthy and fit. Gail Regan, professor of health, human movement and

sport at Castleton University, will speak on the importance of older adults staying active. After the lecture there will be a group walk on the walking trail, with lunch to follow. Luncheon reservations must be made by 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 28. For more information, call 802-468-3093. Castleton Community Center is located at 2108 Main St., Castleton, Vermont.

Fling Continued from front page Spring Fling will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 25 on the Fair Haven Town Green. The event is hosted concurrently with the Memorial Day parade. A perennial favorite with the community, Spring Fling will host between 35 and 40 vendors at this year’s event. Offerings include carnivaltype games, food vendors selling hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, fried dough, shaved ice and more, as well as arts and crafts vendors and others. Many local groups also have booths on the green, including the Cub Scouts and the Fair Haven Historical Society. “Several churches will be running food sales, there will be goats to pet, games to play, bounce houses, maple milkshakes and a lot more,” said Kerry Fowler, president of the Chamber. Chamber volunteers begin setting up for Spring Fling early in the morning, with vendors showing up soon afterward to put the finishing touches on their displays. “I’ll be there at around 5:30 to meet the first vendors arriving at 6 a.m.,” said Fowler, who also said he enjoys talking with

ing and household items to wise shoppers. Enter the back door of the church off the parking lot. There is a ramp to make entry easier. For more information, call Ida Mae Johnson at 802-287-9744. United Baptist Church of Poultney is located at 1500 E. Main St., Poultney, Vermont.

vendors later in the afternoon and finding out what sort of day they had. Hundreds of people make their way to the green during Spring Fling to take in the sights, purchase something useful or lovely from a vendor, enjoy a hot dog or two and, odds are – especially in a friendly community like Fair Haven – catch up with neighbors and friends. In the early afternoon, attention turns to the annual Memorial Day parade, which begins immediately after a 2 p.m. ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial at the intersection of Main and Washington Streets. The parade kicks off between 2:30 and 3 p.m. from the park. The route takes marchers down Main Street to Caernarvon Street, left onto Second Street, left onto Washington Street and then back to the green. In years past, the parade has featured marchers from the local fire department and Little League teams. Antique cars also have added their charm to the proceedings, helping to usher in the unofficial start of summer in grand Fair Haven style. For more information about Fair Haven’s Spring Fling, call the Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce at 802-265-8600.

The 50th annual Middletown Springs Memorial Day Parade will take place on Sunday, May 26, at 3 p.m. For half a century, parade watchers have set up their lawn chairs and blankets and cheered the passing floats, bands and marching units. The theme of this year’s parade is “America the Beautiful.” The parade will begin on South Street (Route 133) and Buxton Avenue and process north to the town green. Middletown A father and son at the Springs resident Alice war memorial. Haines Hoisington will coordinate the line-up at 2 p.m., as she has been doing since the parade’s inception. “We’re not a big parade, but we have a big history,” said parade co-organizer Linda Peavy. “And we try to keep in mind that Memorial Day is not Veterans Day, and it’s not the first day of summer. It’s a day for honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice.” A brief ceremony on the green following the parade will feature the winners of the annual Memorial Day contest of student artwork and writing. “Our kindergartners draw posters, grades two and three do more advanced artwork that includes some writing, and our fourth through sixth graders write poems, essays or stories reflecting on what Memorial Day means,” Peavy said. All entries will be on display on the green in the “Words and Art from the Heart” tent. A tradition begun last year to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I is a choral recitation of the poem “In Flanders Fields” by John McCrae. “One of the children who participated last year said that this needed to become a tradition,” said Peavy. The recitation will be done from memory. “When the kids pause and say ‘We are the

Dead,’ it’s quite a powerful moment,” she said. Coached by Peavy, an author, the fifth and sixth graders also have collaborated on an original poem from the point of view of a soldier on the battlefield thinking of his brother back home. They will deliver this work as a choral reading, too. An abridged letter from a Gold Star Mother will be read by Sally Achey in honor of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice, after Middletown Springs which the traditional color guard salute will be made, accompanied by the Mill River Union High School marching band. The Middletown Springs Volunteer Fire Department will be on hand selling hamburgers, hot dogs, baked goods, popcorn, soft drinks and water on the southeastern edge of the green starting at 2 p.m., and a sugarhouse snack truck will be on site, too. It’s not too late to sign up to participate. The parade committee invites organizations or groups to make this 50th parade the best one yet. Floats by area organizations and businesses, children’s floats, vintage vehicles – including antique tractors and farm equipment – are invited to join vehicles from area fire departments and rescue squads. Formal or informal band or music groups are invited to participate as well, alongside the Mill River marching band. Prizes will be awarded to floats. For more information and to participate, email msmemorialparade@gmail.com or call Bob Bruttomesso at 802-683-8106. “And it won’t be a parade without plenty of watchers, so we hope area residents will put our parade on their calendars and join us,” said Peavy.

Poultney

The community meeting on May 30 will begin to implement the directions set in April. In partnership with the town and village, the Vermont Agency of Commerce and Community Development and the Vermont Council on Rural Development will be facilitating this meeting for all members of the Poultney community who want to help frame and move forward on action steps. Ted Brady, deputy secretary of commerce and community development, has been the point person from the state who initiated the process to bring Poultney residents together, set priorities and connect to technical and funding resources of state and federal agencies and nonprofit partners. He said, “The people and leaders of Poultney have impressed me with the way they’ve come together to talk

about the future of their town. This next meeting is where the rubber meets the road, where ideas turn into action and people create actionable plans to accomplish the common vision they’ve identified.” The Agency of Commerce is building a visiting team of state, federal and nonprofit leaders who will add their ideas and are eager to support implementation of the priorities established by Poultney residents. This session will be about ways the town can respond to the closure, not the future of the college campus. Participants at the meeting on May 30 will hear updates from town and village manager Paul Donaldson and provost Tom Mauhs-Pugh about the current state of affairs and prospects for the site.

Continued from front page reation as an economic driver for Poultney’s future; n Improve broadband infrastructure; n Develop a Poultney coworking space and incubator for new start-up businesses and invite newcomers to town; and n Boost downtown Poultney. According to Jeff King, Poultney select board chair: “There is an opportunity here to make this town even greater than it is.” Joe Debonis, Jr., president of the village board of trustees, also encouraged community members to step up: “This is a great chance for communityled action. It is a great way to get together and get to know your neighbors.”

Spring at last: Explore the world! By Jan Jones, director of Castleton Free Library In the wetlands the calls of peepers are being overshadowed by grey tree frog and toad trills, and along the dirt roads bright yellow coltsfoot is giving way to columbine flowers. Good weather has finally arrived. It’s time to get out and explore on foot or small wheels! But before you go, stop at Castleton Free Library for some gear, guides and maybe a park pass. Our collection continues to grow. Our newest pass is for admission to the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum in Vergennes, opening for the season tomorrow, Saturday, May 25. There you can wander from exhibit to exhibit learning about Vermont nautical history with the lake sparkling beside you. Travel a bit farther north to visit Shelburne Museum, Shelburne Farms or Echo Lake Aquarium and Science Center, all of which offer

opportunities to walk outdoors, whether on footpaths, through sprawling museum grounds and gardens or along the waterfront. Or go south to Manchester and visit Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home, with its gardens, goats, trails and a Pullman car. For more – including owls! – travel east to the Vermont Institute of Natural Science in Quechee, or all the way to Montshire Museum in Norwich on the Connecticut River. Passes circulate for three days and offer assorted deals, from discounts to free entrance for a set number of people. We expect our Vermont State Park Pass – which permits free day entry for up to eight people in one vehicle – will be ready in time for a Memorial Day picnic at one of the 30-plus parks with dayuse areas. The similar Vermont Historic Sites Pass provides entry to any of those nine sites, many with trails, guid-

Explore, create and ‘bee friends’ at Hildene camps Each summer, guided by its mission of “Values into Action,” Hildene offers a broad spectrum of camps appropriate for children entering grades 1 to 6. With the first day of summer just weeks away, most of this summer’s camps are full, but there are still a few openings in three. Part of the fun at “Around the World Exploring Cultures through Art” camp for children entering grades 2 to 4 is the nature hikes, as campers make discoveries and gather

materials for their art projects. They also get a unique opportunity to paint in Hildene’s beautiful gardens. All this and more happens under the insightful guidance of Anharad Llewelyn, visual arts teacher at Long Trail School in Dorset. Perennial favorite “Nets, Buckets and Boots” for children entering grades 1 to 3 is back. This camp focuses on insects and animals in their habitats: river, pond and wet-

Be sure to borrow a field guide to help you sort out those tricky warblers and other new avian arrivals. Brooke Burnham: Mettawee School’s ‘Rockstar’ West Pawlet resident and paraeducator Brooke Burnham may not have a Twitter account with over 39 million followers like Lady Gaga, but to her colleagues at the Mettawee Community School, Burnham is a bona fide “Rockstar.” And the folks at the Vermont Education Health Initiative think so, too. Every school year since 2015, the Vermont Education Health Initiative has encouraged school employees to nominate individuals who represent physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellness in all components of their lives: workplace, home and community. After extensive review, up to 30 people in the state each year are designated as a VEHI

Brooke Burnham Rockstar. For the 2018-19 school year, Mettawee Community School’s Burnham checked off all the boxes to capture the prestigious

award. This marks the first time a VEHI Rockstar label has been given to anyone from the school. “Brooke is always ready to take the lead,” said Karen

Stomsky, coworker and friend who nominated Burnham for the honor. “She volunteers for tons of things, whether it’s running our local free clothing drive at the school each year or overseeing a water station at the Susan B. Komen Race for a Cure in Manchester. She is always willing to go the extra mile to help someone.” And recently that someone has been Burnham herself. “I spent so much time giving to others that for many years I never took time for myself,” she said as she showed her vision board with the words “Just Breathe” displayed prominently. “I never thought I liked to read, for example, until I started

to do so five months ago,” Burnham said. “I have just finished my eighth book and realized I really like reading. I am also now practicing mindfulness; focusing on what I have control of and letting go of what I do not. Changing my mindset has significantly reduced my level of stress.” Burnham’s attitude does not go unnoticed at Mettawee. “Brooke brings her energy and joy to school every day,” said Mettawee School principal Brooke DeBonis. “Her positive outlook and focus on personal wellness is infectious. She is a role model for students, staff and her fellow teachers. She is our Rockstar!”

Remember the reason for Memorial Day To the editor: As the daughter of a World War II veteran, I hold a special place in my heart for the parents, siblings, spouses and friends of those who served. I can’t help but think of all the men and women who have gone to fight for this great nation and did not return home. While we are all guilty of celebrating the unofficial start of summer and encouraging each other to “have a good weekend,” it is important to remember the reason for the holiday: Memorial Day is the day Americans set aside to honor those brave men and women who met tragic ends while defending our freedom. It is our duty to honor their sacrifices, to pray for their families and to bow our heads in recognition of their service. On National Poppy Day,

Friday, May 24, American Legion Auxiliary Unit 69 in Arlington will have poppies available as a tribute to our fallen warriors. We invite residents to stop by Post 69 from 4 to 9 p.m. to receive a poppy in exchange for a donation to wear in remembrance of those who paid the ultimate price for our freedom. We must never forget. The poppy, which bloomed on the battlefields of France after World War I, has grown to become an internationally known and recognized symbol of the lives sacrificed in war and the hope that none died in vain. One hundred percent of donations received will go directly to help veterans, military and their families. The American Legion Family has called upon Congress to set aside the Friday before

Memorial Day as National Poppy Day. The American Legion Auxiliary is the world’s largest women’s patriotic service organization, with nearly three-quarters of a million members and more 8,000 units in communities across the nation. The auxiliary serves nearly one million veterans every year. Right here in Arlington, we continue to help mitigate the challenges our veterans face and deliver upon our mission by organizing multiple events and fundraisers throughout the year to support veterans, military and their families. To learn more about the auxiliary’s mission or to volunteer, donate or join, visit www.alaforveterans.org. Denise Colety 2nd Vice/Public Relations ALA Unit 69

KT’s Canteen to benefit Hope Lodge By Jared Stamm Fair Haven resident Katie Ross wants to give back to the place that gave her family so much last year. The owner of KT’s Canteen, a food truck that hangs out in the parking lot of the Old Outlet, is well acquainted with Hope Lodge in Burlington. Last year Katie was diagnosed with cancer and had to have half of her lung removed. After her surgery, she developed complications that required her to be hospitalized in Burlington for 40 days. Rather than make the drive from Fair Haven to Burlington and back to visit her, Katie’s mom, Theresa, was able to stay at Hope Lodge, a home away from home for cancer patients and their caregivers operated by the American Cancer Society. There are more than 30

Hope Lodge locations throughout the United States and Puerto Rico, and they offer a free place to stay when cancer patients’ best hope for effective treatment may be in another city. Each lodge provides a home-like environment where guests can retreat to private rooms or connect with others. Katie’s mom stayed at Burlington’s Hope Lodge for the 40 days Katie was in the hospital. “It’s a great place, and they were incredibly generous,” Katie said. Katie’s treatment was a success. “When they removed the cancer, they got it all,” she said. “So now I’m cancer-free.” And she’s eager to get back to serving up hamburgers, foot-long hot dogs, ice cream, milkshakes, hand-cut French fries, onion rings and more to Fair Haven’s residents from KT’s Canteen. “I opened it last summer

but had to close in October when I got my diagnosis.” Nice weather is coming, and a busy Memorial Day weekend is ahead with Fair Haven’s Spring Fling on Saturday as well as the town’s Memorial Day celebrations. Katie wants to thank Hope Lodge for its generosity toward her and her mom and will donate proceeds from her sales this weekend to the facility: “My mom will be working the food truck with me, and we’ll be selling dollar hot dogs and dollar Mylar balloons as well as latex balloons for kids. We’ll have a 50/50 raffle, too.” “I hope everyone will stop by to say hi and have a hot dog in support of Hope Lodge,” she said. For more information, call Katie at 802-683-0937. KT’s Canteen is located in the Old Outlet parking lot at 0 Prospect St., Fair Haven, Vermont.
