31 FRIDAY
Art Opening The Historic Salem Courthouse Community Center will host the opening reception for “Celebrating Rural Everyday Scenes,” a solo exhibition by artist Ned Reade on Friday, May 31, from 6 to 8 p.m. The exhibit will run from Friday, May 24 through Friday, July 5. Reade teaches a watercolor workshop on Martha’s Vineyard and one at the Southern Vermont Arts Center each summer. His work can be seen in galleries around New England. For over 40 years he has been chairman of the art department at the Trinity-Pawling School in Pawling, New York. Reade said, “Painting for me fulfills an urge to record a place or moment in time. The contrast between the precision of architecture and the looseness of reflected light and natural forms is a common theme. Painting releases creative and emotional energies; it can be as exhilarating as dancing or playing a sport.”
This show is the second of five installments in the 2019 Great Hall Art Exhibit series presented by the Historic Salem Courthouse Community Center. This year’s art series focuses on expanding the genres of art represented and showcasing local food vendors at its opening receptions. Cost: Free. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at Manchester Community Library. Arguably, the North Korean nuclear/missile problem is currently one of the most challenging U.S. foreign policy issues, because the nation can directly threaten the U.S. mainland unless issues are resolved in a peaceful manner. Yangmo Ku, acting director of the Peace and War Center at Norwich University, will address North Korea’s motives for nuclear and missile development as well as the costs and benefits to the North Korean regime. He will then explore how the international community, particularly the U.S. government, has handled the pressing issue. Based upon this historical analysis, he will present his own ideas on how to resolve the long-standing, difficult issue. Cost: $15 in advance or $20 at the door. Information/registration: 802-867-0111 or visit www.greenmtnacademy.org. Manchester Community Library, 138 Cemetery Ave., Manchester Center, Vermont.
