Sporting art at Burr and Burton June 11 Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning will welcome Katie Wood Kirchhoff, associate curator at Shelburne Museum, to talk about artist Ogden Pleissner at Burr and Burton Academy on Tuesday, June 11, at 5:30 p.m. What do a pair of Bean boots, a tuxedo and a deerstalker hat have in common? All of these items illuminate the hunting and fishing pictures of Ogden Pleissner (1905-1983), an American 20th-century painter who spent many years in southern Vermont. In addition to a discussion of Pleissner’s Vermont paintings, Kirchhoff ’s talk, “Notes from the Field: Sporting Art by Ogden Pleissner” will range from the dusty landscapes of Dubois, Wyoming, and the oldgrowth forests on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick, Canada, to the piney lowlands of the exclusive

Mettawee Community School in West Pawlet was the site of the first Mettawee School and Merck Forest Spring Carnival on Wednesday, May 22. For two hours during the school day, classroom work for the entire school was moved outdoors, where children could learn lessons from nature and have some playtime, too. Work stations were set up around the school’s playground and athletic fields for activities that included touch tables filled with birds’ nests, animal skeletons, turtle shells and natural materials; opportunities to weave sticks, grasses, leaves and flowers into elaborate works of art; nature scavenger hunts for feathers, bones, eggs, frogs and various shapes and textures from nature; group yoga, compost tag and bean relay races; stacking stones to build cairns; face painting and much more. Students also worked in shifts to reclaim the school’s garden plot for planting. Throughout the carnival, kids cleaned out weeds and turned the soil in the garden’s raised beds, which had been left dormant for a few years. The highlight of the day was a hike led by staff from Merck Forest and Farmland Center through fields adjoining the school and into the woods. Students were encouraged to sit quietly in nature and reflect through words or drawings on what they heard, saw, smelled and touched. “I felt the moss on a log and heard the song of a new bird for the first time,” noted one student. “I saw the trees sway in the wind and make a creaking sound like a rocking chair,” said another. “Our forests are a special place. We’re lucky to live in the largest intact temperate broadleaf forest in the world – a habitat of global significance,” said Rob Terry, the executive director of Merck Forest and Farmland Center. “I’m always grateful to step away from my phone and computer to spend

Shifting gears: Summer is a-comin’ in Castleton Chaffee exhibits will open June 21 By Jan Jones, director of Castleton Free Library We’re shifting gears here at Castleton Free Library, literally and figuratively. Just today I was riding around the children’s room, testing out the fleet of 3-speed bicycles on loan from Johnson and Son Bikeworks, available now for you to borrow with your library card. Librarians are the only ones allowed to ride inside, but you may wheel away for a day at a time. Here’s how it works: You must be a registered Castleton Free Library patron 18 years or older to check out bikes for yourself and/or your family members. You must sign a liability release form and agree to wear a helmet while biking. The library will provide helmets and locks. The bikes must be picked up when the library is open and returned before closing on the next open day. In most cases,
this will be a lending period of a little more than 24 hours, with a longer lending period for Saturday pick-ups. The catch is that we don’t have a bike rack for cars, so you will need a means of transporting the bikes for rides starting outside the village. However, access to the D&H Rail Trail – that extends ten miles through marsh and farmland to Poultney – is just a block away. You may call ahead to reserve for a specific day. The full summer schedule of events will appear in our next column, but here is a teaser. The 2019 summer reading theme is “A Universe of Stories” – pretty expansive, right? For young readers, incentive charts with prizes will be available in the library at the end of the school year, and programs will include movie nights, construction of cardboard lunar modules to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo mis-
sion, a moon party, storytelling inspired by the stars, a play by Rutland’s Summer Encore troupe, space-themed LEGOs, a book giveaway and more. For older kids we’re launching a discussion group centered on the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award 19-20 reading list (Alert: Award name change coming soon), and we will be offering another free Maker Camp with Lisa Cacciatore. Call the library at 802-468-5574, email us at castletonfreelibrary@ gmail.com or send a Facebook message if you would like to be added to the registration list. Year-round programs continue, so if you’re here only during the summer (Welcome back, summer people!) or your work schedule changes, be sure to check out Friday morning story hours at 10:30 a.m. and preschool playgroup on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. Both are very informal and include art, music and other activities as well as stories.
Astronomy night at Hubbardton Battlefield June 8 The first astronomy program of 2019 at the Hubbardton Battlefield will be Saturday, June 8, beginning at about 9:10 p.m. and winding up at 11 p.m., weather and sky conditions permitting. History and art on tap for First Friday First Friday at the Slate Valley Museum is all about history. The museum will host an opening reception for a new exhibit, “Glory Days: An Era of Industry,” on Friday, June 7, from 7 to 9 p.m. “Glory Days” portrays the growth of industry along the Battenkill, the Mettowee and the Indian rivers from the mid-19th century until the present. These rivers powered the mills and factories that flourished along their shores as far back as the 1700s and produced goods such as bricks, clothing and furniture. The exhibit includes artwork, photographs and cultural materials and objects. For example, in the mid-1900s two lingerie factories in Granville – Nora Lee Lingerie and J&J Lingerie – supplied luxury stores throughout New York State. Examples of lingerie produced by these factories will be on display. Curated by Salem historian Judy Flagg, Washington County Historical Society research assistant Sally Brillon and artist Elizabeth Cockey, the author of “Untold Stories of the Battenkill,” a book of art and photography inspired by the beauty of the Battenkill, “Glory Days” celebrates the industrial foundations supporting the waterside towns of upstate New York. A gallery talk will take place next Friday, June 14, at 7 p.m., and the exhibit will run through Tuesday, Sept. 17. Across the Mettowee River footbridge, the Pember Library and Museum of Natural History will welcome the students of Granville Central School District on First Friday for an exhibition of their artwork. Art teacher Jennifer Dashef looks forward to meeting the Granville community on Friday. “It will be a real celebration of our students’ wonderful artwork,” she said. “It should be a fun night.” Fifth-grade students are displaying their tessellation drawings inspired by M.C. Escher’s art. “The students used stencils to create their unique designs,” Dashef said. Sixth graders will show their interpretations of ideas from the Art for Kids Hub YouTube drawing series. Said Dashef: “We’ve got some great drawings of dogs and the Incredible Hulk.” And the kids from Mary J. Tanner School have created a felt tapestry that portrays a slate quarry. The exhibit will remain on display for part of the month of June. A playlist of specially selected recorded music will accompany the exhibit. Both museums’ events, which are free and open to the public, run from 7 to 9 p.m. For more information, call Slate Valley Museum at 518-6421417 or the Pember at 518-6422525. Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water St., Granville. The Pember Library and Museum of Natural History is located at 33 West Main St., Granville.

Twig Remembers
Norm Brown Norm and I were classmates from Fair Haven High School Class of 1961. Norm and his best friend for life, Brad Goodrich, knew that they wanted to be game wardens. They went to Nichols Junior College and took their forestry classes. They went and took the game warden test, and it was easy. Together forever in the woods for every hunting season, they knew all the rules. Twenty-five years later, I am working at Williams Hardware and he’s a regular nuts-andbolts customer. He’d come down Main Street, put his blinker on and come in the back door. I met him, we greeted, and I asked him if he wanted to catch a poacher. I said hurry or we’ll miss him. Brownie’s a big guy, and here we are pounding down through and getting strange looks from wondering custom-
ers. We get to the front door and I point out his truck, an old black-and-red Chevy painted with a 4-inch paint brush. We found nobody in the truck but a dog barking madly. He said, “I wonder where he is?” I said, “I know where he is. He’s in the diner. He’ll be behind the counter wearing a white apron.” He asked, “What’s he doing behind the counter?” I said, “Cooking eggs . . . he’s a poacher!” I should have known better. Norm was a lot of things, National Guardsman, U.S. Marshall and in his spare minutes he took down trees and he had a dandy of a sale-of-firewood business. God bless you, Brownie. It’s time for you to take a break. God only knows you’ve earned it. God bless. Twig

Participants will learn how to engage young readers in lively talks about books, use books as a springboard for conversations, assess a child’s present reading level and choose books for optimal literacy growth and assist emerging writers as they begin to
MacKenzie to perform June 14 The Old Firehouse in Tinmouth will present musician Tom MacKenzie on Friday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. MacKenzie plays everything from French Canadian dance tunes to Tin Pan Alley, old-time country, ragtime and classical. Anything is likely to be on the musical menu: Grieg’s “Hall of the Mountain King” on hammered dulcimer? MacKenzie can do it. A member of the folk group Woods Tea Company for many years, MacKenzie now keeps busy working with other musicians playing banjo, hammered dulcimer, guitar, keyboard and recently ukulele. At intermission, the audience will participate in a nocharge raffle for free tickets to future concerts. Local groups will provide refreshments. The famous Tinmouth Snack Bar will be open for dinner, snacks and ice cream
Tom MacKenzie before the show. Suggested donation is $10$15. 90 percent of the proceeds will go to MacKenzie, and 10 percent will go to the town for maintenance of the firehouse. Monica Rizzio at Brandon Music Brandon Music will present country singer-songwriter Monica Rizzio on Friday, June 14, at 7:30 p.m. Rizzio is fast becoming one of the finest singer-songwriters who call New England home. For over 10 years she played fiddle and sang with Tripping Lily, a folk acoustic pop band that toured the East Coast. Rizzio is a talented multiinstrumentalist – originally a flutist, she also plays guitar, violin, ukulele, mandolin and piano. Her voice is both rustic and refined, and she sings with “equal parts tenderness and sass. She reminds me of a slightly duskier Nanci Griffith,” according to singer-songwriter Mark Erelli. Concert tickets are $20. A pre-concert dinner is available for $25. Reservations are required for dinner and recommended for the show. Brandon Music is a BYOB venue. For more information and reservations, call 802-247-4295, email info@brandon-music.net or visit www.brandon-music.net. Brandon Music is located at 62 Country Club Rd., Brandon, Vermont.
