Fair Haven seniors bid farewell By Jared Stamm

Fair Haven Union High School’s graduation took place on Thursday evening, June 13, under the pavilion at Castleton University. “The official number of graduates is just shy of 100,” principal Jason Rasco said earlier in the week. The high school moved its graduation ceremony to Castleton University’s pavilion

last year, said Rasco. Based on feedback he received after the ceremony last year, he made some changes to the configuration for graduation. “We’re moving the kids front and center,” he said. “They will be in the spotlight behind the pavilion on tiered seating.” Fair Haven’s graduation ceremony includes music provided by the school’s chorus and band. “The faculty will process to Sousa’s ‘The Washington Post’ march

and the seniors will enter the pavilion to Elgar’s ‘Pomp and Circumstance,’” said Rasco. This year’s class includes many students who have experienced a number of state championships, said Rasco. “The kids are fresh on the heels of becoming Division 2 state baseball champs. That just happened on Friday,” said Rasco.

Poultney High School’s 2019 graduation ceremony will take place today at 6 p.m. at the school, and 26 seniors will walk across the stage in front of their families and friends and receive their diplomas. The stage actually is a trailer donated for the occasion by Loomis Trucking. “They’re great. They drop it off for the weekend, and we decorate it. They don’t charge us for it, and we really appreciate that,” said Poultney High School principal Joe DeBonis. Weather-permitting, the ceremony will take place outside, but if it’s raining, it will be held in the gym. “Regardless of where it is, there will be plenty of seating,” said DeBonis.

The Poultney graduating class at their class trip to Hampton Beach. This year’s class is a little smaller than usual. “We usually average in the low to mid-30s, but last year, this year and next we’ll be in the 20s.” The number of Poultney graduates heading into the workforce is about equal to the number who will be attending col-

lege. No one will be entering the military, said DeBonis. Poultney’s valedictorian is Cameron Wescott, who will be attending Castleton University to study music education. A

year’s valedictorian, Gabrielle Ochs, who is now attending Castleton University. Class president Shantel Gregory, who will attend Middlebury College in the fall, will present the class of 2019’s gift to the school. Past gifts have included a gazebo and a park bench. “And the kids always present a monetary gift to next year’s senior class,” said Rasco. After the ceremony, the graduates will take part in Project Graduation festivities at The Fun Spot in Lake George. Project Graduation activities are organized, adult-supervised and alcohol-free events offered as part of a postgraduation party. “The park will be open for the graduates until 4 a.m.,” said Rasco. “They’re safe and having fun, and then part of the tradition is for them to return to the campus for breakfast. It’s a really neat thing.”

Continued from front page “This year’s graduating class has been state champions for women’s basketball and men’s baseball. And last year, they were state champions in football and boys basketball. “One of our seniors has been part of three sports in fall, winter and spring, and he has a championship in each one of those,” said Rasco. Fair Haven’s valedictorian is Sarah Ezzo, who will be attending Franklin Pierce University in Rindge, New Hampshire to study forensic accounting. Salutatorian Cassidy Lanfear will attend the University of Vermont to undertake the premed curriculum. Speakers at the graduation will be Ezzo, Lanfear and last

Poultney’s salutatorian is Alyssa McMahon, who will be attending Castleton University as well, but she has not yet decided on a major. “She is an accomplished artist and belongs to the National Art Honor Society in addition to the National Honor Society.” The graduation speakers

At graduation ceremony, representatives from local groups such as Rotary, Women’s Club, Morning Star Lodge and the American Legion will present awards to the seniors, in addition to school scholarships. “The national awards are given out during honors night, and we save the more local ones for graduation,” said DeBonis. A popular feature of the ceremony will occur at the end of the evening, when members of the class of 1969, who are celebrating their 50th reunion this year, will receive a Golden Diploma. “It’s a great way to get alumni back,” said DeBonis, “and they really enjoy it.”

Wells names new head librarian By Jared Stamm Wells Village Library will welcome its new library director on Monday, June 24, at 11 a.m. at the library. Angela French was named head librarian after the resignation of Joy Brewster in April. Brewster held the position for five years. French, the former assistant librarian at Gilbert Hart Library in Wallingford, Vermont, is enthusiastic about the challenge of directing the Wells library. “I am so honored and excited to be the librarian of such a wonderful community.” She is working toward acquiring her Certificate of Public Librarianship, offered by the State of Vermont for individuals without formal library training who are directing small Vermont public libraries, and is eager to bring her experience from Wallingford to Wells. French’s plans for the library are wide-ranging, including hosting the Rutland County librarians meeting at the Wells Village Library in September to brainstorm and share ideas for the library with the group; offering a free workshop for library patrons on better understanding how to make the best use of library technology, including ebooks and audio books; representing the library at the Vermont Fairy Tale Festival at the Sherburne

Angela French Memorial Library in Killington in September; increasing the library’s social media presence on Facebook and Instagram; offering weekly story time for children; and creating an electronic catalog of the library’s contents. This last is “a huge task,” said French, “but I look forward to embracing the challenge starting with an inventory of the library’s collection and choosing a cataloging program.” “We had five applicants for the job,” said Wells Village Library trustee Ron Dreher, “and Angela impressed us with her enthusiasm. Every time she came before the board of trustees she had great thoughts and ideas about how to get people into the library. She will be a real asset to Wells.” Also present on June 24 will be Joy Worland, who is a

library consultant for small and rural libraries for the Vermont Department of Libraries, and library directors from Poultney, Middletown Springs and Pawlet. “These librarians wanted to attend to show support for our new librarian,” said Dreher. The June 24 event also will include an appearance by author Diane Shovak, whose novel “Deceit” is set on Lake Saint Catherine. Shovak, a retired speech-language pathologist from Connecticut, has summered with her family on Lake Saint Catherine for many years. The idea for “Deceit,” her first novel, came to her one hot summer night on the lake. “I couldn’t sleep, and I began to wonder what I would do if I heard a sound or an altercation of some kind out on the lake.” “Deceit” begins with a scream heard on the lake in the middle of the night, which leads to the exposure of lies and secrets in a small Vermont town. The book is a labor of love by Shovak, who says it took her more than 10 years to write and publish. It will be available for purchase at the library, and Shovak will sign copies for purchasers. Said Dreher: “We’ll be serving refreshments for those Wells residents who will attend and enjoy our new librarian’s enthusiasm. We encourage everyone to come greet Angela on Monday morning.”

Fair Haven concerts present Annie and the Hedonists June 20 Back for their second appearance in Fair Haven, Annie and the Hedonists will appear at the Fair Haven Concerts in the Park on Thursday, June 20, at 7 p.m. Rain location is the Congregational Church at the park’s north end. Annie and the Hedonists interpret the songs of the great female blues artists of the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s, including Bessie Smith, Sippie Wallace, Memphis Minnie, Billie Holiday, Rosetta Tharpe, Blue Lu Barker, Ella Fitzgerald and others. The group also covers other styles, including western swing, bluesy country and roots Americana. The band includes Annie Rosen on lead vocals, Jonny Rosen on guitar and vocals, Peter Davis on clarinet, tenor guitar, piano, and vocals, Don Young on upright bass and vocals and occasionally Jerry Marotta on drums.

The concert series has become a highlight of summer Thursday nights. One of the main attractions each week is the door prize drawing held during intermission all donated by local sponsors and businesses. The concerts also feature a 50/50 raffle at each concert. Proceeds from the 50/50 support the Dodge House in Rutland, a music scholarship to a FHUHS student majoring in music, and also help defray the costs of the concerts. Average attendance last summer was between 500600 people, so there are several parking attendants who make finding parking spaces easier. Hot dogs, popcorn and sodas are available for purchase at each concert. For more information or to find out the location in case of inclement weather, call the concert hotline at 802-265-3010, ext. 301.

Ethan Allen, Fort Ti and the Battle of Bennington Green Mountain Academy for Lifelong Learning will welcome historian Richard Smith to Burr and Burton Academy on Thursday, June 20, from 2 to 3:30 p.m. as he tells the thrilling story of Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys and their journey north through Manchester to Fort Ticonderoga. of the Revolution, because the French entered on the American side. Cost is $15 in advance and $20 at the door. CONGRATULATIONS TO TAYLOR MERRITT ... our Patient of the Month! “I chose Vermont Sports Medicine Center because it is the closest center near Green Mountain College and I heard great things from people in the athletic department at college. I definitely believe that without the staff at VSMC, I would not have recovered as quickly as I have. I am happy to say that I am finally running and almost fully recovered! After my initial surgery I thought I would never run the same again, but thanks to my therapists, I am running confidently and am excited to start playing soccer again in the Fall. I would absolutely recommend VSMC to anyone seeking physical therapy ... with their friendly environment, support and motivation, anyone can succeed!”

Vermont to receive $1.75 million from Dollar General for pricing inaccuracies across all 36 stores in state Attorney General T.J. Donovan announced today that his office has reached a $1.75 million settlement with DG Retail, LLC, also known as Dollar General, for violations of Vermont’s Consumer Protection Act. Under the settlement, Dollar General resolved claims that it sold products that were advertised on the shelf at a lower price than the price at the register, even after being told at least 50 times by state inspectors from the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets to correct the pricing inaccuracies. The Vermont Foodbank will receive $100,000 pursuant to the settlement. “Deceptive advertising will not be tolerated,” said Donovan. “Knowing that Dollar General caters to low-income Vermonters makes their repeatedly misrepresenting prices particularly egregious. I’m pleased that part of this settlement will directly

benefit those Vermonters who struggle with food insecurity.” Dollar General operates 36 retail stores across all 14 counties in Vermont. Dollar General stores sell a wide variety of groceries and household products. Pursuant to Vermont’s Weights and Measures laws, inspectors from the Agency of Agriculture routinely visit Dollar General stores to ensure that the shelf prices match the prices charged at the register. At any given inspection, inspectors randomly check the shelf prices of 50 to 100 products and compare them to the register prices. If the price charged at the register exceeds the shelf price, it is known as an “overcharge error.” Since October 2013, inspectors have found 362 overcharge errors at 22 different Dollar General stores. Of the 362 overcharge errors, the price charged at the register exceeded the shelf price by an amount rang-

ing from $0.02 to $6.00 per item, with a median overcharge amount of $0.35. “Consumer protection is part of our mission at the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets,” said Secretary of Agriculture Anson Tebbetts. “When someone shops at a store, they should be assured they are getting what they paid for. The agency’s scanner inspection program provides integrity at the check-out line.” Under the terms of the settlement, in addition to the $1.75 million payment, Dollar General is required to implement a Pricing Accuracy Policy to ensure that Vermonters are charged the price reflected on a product. Dollar General also will conduct pricing audits to ensure that their products are priced accurately. Since 2013, Dollar General has paid at least $241,700 in penalties to the Agency of Agriculture, Food and Markets.
