Dedicated in memory of Andy Brown This year’s edition of the Fair Haven Community Guidebook and Vermont Lakes Region Chamber of Commerce Membership Directory is dedicated in memory of Andy Brown. A life-long resident of Fair Haven, Andy was a visible part of the community and a dedicated civil servant. He served in the Korean War and was town constable for twenty-five years before becoming the Chief of the Fair Haven Police Department, a role he filled for 32 years before retiring in 1994. He served as a trustee of public funds, was a member of the Board of Adjustment and served on the board of trustees for the Community Camp. He also taught a hunter safety course at the grade school, was a devoted member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the local Eagles club and American Legion Post. Andy’s work is remembered as responsive, just and compassionate. He embodies the spirit of Fair Haven and will be missed.

A hearty welcome to Vt. If you’re looking for information about Fair Haven, or anywhere else in the state for that matter, you may want to consider stopping by the Fair Haven Welcome Center. Located on U.S. Route 4, Exit 1, just east of the New York State line, the Welcome Center was built in 1980, and is host to approximately 170,000 travelers per year. An attractive building, the welcome center rests underneath a slate roof and is surrounded by a series of beautiful gardens tended to by welcome center staff. “There are numerous flower beds. We do all the landscaping ourselves,” explained manager Teresa Leamy. With several picnic tables and a gazebo, the center is an ideal location for weary travelers to relax and enjoy a picnic. Inside the center has a small children’s activity area, an art gallery in the lobby, bathrooms, some refreshments, free Wi-Fi, and plenty of infor-

mation on the local area and the state. It’s also an excellent place to promote your business. The center’s mission is to promote local and state business and they do an excellent job. There are several display cases in which they post information on different businesses and the contents of those cases is changed every month. The Fair Haven Center also manages the Vermont Information Center Divisions brochure distribution system which helps disseminate brochures on businesses and attractions to the other 15 Welcome/Information Centers located around the state, reaching nearly 3 million travelers annually. The center also holds several events during the course of the year including Open House events in which local Chamber of Commerce’s are invited. The biggest event however is the annual Fun Festival. The fifth annual festival will

7KH )DLU +DYHQ :HOFRPH &HQWHU be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 25, and features a number of Vermont businesses who are invited to the center for the day to set up a table or booth and promote themselves. “It continues to get bigger and bigger every year,” said Leamy. “It allows businesses the chance to show travelers what they have to offer. Businesses really seem to enjoy it because it gives them the chance to mingle with customers. “

The event, which continues to attract new vendors every year, is free to participate in and attend. Previous events have attracted upwards of 3,500 people. “Families really enjoy it,” Leamy said. So stop in any time and meet Teresa, Carol, Cindy, Ann, Dennis, April, Ryan, Ed and Lorrie. The center is open every day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. They can be contacted any time at: 802-265-4763, or fw.center@state.vt.us.

A histor y enriched by slate If the horses and buggies were replaced with cars, the downtown looks much the same today. The historic district surrounding the green has many interesting houses. Other early enterprises included slate quarries, the Fair Haven Clock Co., and Lion Brand Shirt manufacturing facility, which employed more than 500 people. Fair Haven also played host to a paper mill, hammer and anvil factory, grist mill, and a YMCA. It started out small with only 411 residents, but has grown to its current size of 2,925 residents as of the 2000 Census. Of the early enterprises, the slate industry remains a major employer, out of 21 slate companies in the late 1800's, manufacturing roofing tiles and other slate products, many remain in business today. Vermont slate from the Fair Haven area has been used in the construc-

tion of the White House, the Pentagon and the Lincoln Memorial, among other notable structures. Tragic fires in 1899, 1909 and 1918 destroyed large parts of the main business district, including four hotels, which once served early travelers. As then, life in Fair Haven continues to be centered around the central business area and the village green, which is surrounded by homes that are outstanding examples of the periods architecture. The Fair Haven green is registered in the National Registry of Historical Places, as are many of the surrounding homes and churches. Located on West Park Place are three homes built by Ira Allen, brother of Ethan Allen and one of Fair Haven's original settlers. The park in Fair Haven will once again come alive with the sound of music as organizers have brought back the summer concert series. Throughout July and August, residents and visitors to Fair Haven will have the chance to enjoy eight unique concerts held in the gazebo at the park. Concerts will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursdays. In the event of inclement weather, performances will be moved to the Fair Haven Baptist Church where concert-goers will be shielded from the weather. At each concert, folks will be able to make use of the picnic tables in the park and water and popcorn will be available. Organizers will give away sev-

eral door prizes and host a 50/50 drawing at each concert. There area also several promotions included within this year’s schedule including free ice cream cones on July 7 courtesy of Stewart’s and a drawing for a $100 gift certificate at the Fair Haven Inn on July 28 and August 25. The complete schedule is: Prydein on July 7; East Bay Jazz on July 14; Woods Tea Company on July 21; Possumhaw on July 28; Enerjazz on Aug. 4; Big Spike Blue Grass on Aug. 11; The Moonlighters on Aug. 18; and Salsa Seis Latin Jazz on Aug. 25.
