The 2013 Washington County Fair Program - 13

$Q DJULFXOWXUDO WUDGLWLRQ IRU RYHU D FHQWXU\

For more than 100 years, the Washington County Fair has been the highlight of the agricultural year for residents of the county. For the youth especially, the fair is the culmination of all their work both in 4-H and with their livestock. Each year families flock to the fair to revel in the many attractions. They come to watch the tractor pulls, enjoy the food, win a prize, experience the bright lights and thrills of the midway and discover the agricultural heritage of the area on which the event was founded more than 120 years ago. According to JoAnne Booth, who chaired the Anniversary Committee three years ago, during the 19th century nearly every town in the county had its own agricultural society, many of which hosted their own fairs. One of the largest was the Greater Cambridge Fair, which was founded in 1890. In that year, Jerome B. Rice, president of the Rice Seed company, purchased the Lake Lauderdale Fair and moved it to Cambridge.

The fair drew thousands of people each year and at one point was the secondlargest event of its type in the state. Special excursion trains ran from Saratoga, Troy, North Adams, Mass., Whitehall, Rutland, Vt., and

:DVKLQJWRQ &RXQW\ )DLUJURXQGV FLUFD ODWH ¡V elsewhere, bringing people directly to the fair. Around the same time there was also a Washington County Junior Fair. The two events were held separately for many years until the Greater Cambridge Fair went defunct in 1947 and the two events were merged. Initially the event was moved around to different locations in the county and during the 1950s was held in

Greenwich, where there is now a shopping center that is home to Hannaford. “It was held there until some people had the foresight to buy land where the fair is today, said Booth. In 1960, organizers pur-

chased 25 acres with six buildings in Easton. A year later, the fair was held at its current location for the first time. The Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society Board of Directors and the Washington County Junior Fair Board of Trustees, which merged in 1991 to become the Washington County Fair, Inc., with a 32-member volunteer board,

continued to add more land and erect more buildings on the site over the next five decades. In 1967, they added 43 acres, and a kid’s dormitory in 1971 provided housing for the hundreds of kids who participate in the fair each year. An historic school house was put up in 1977, and the Ag. Center was built in 1999. In 2008, another 40 acres were purchased, ensuring sufficient room for parking and expansion in the years to come. “There were new buildings added almost every year through the 1960s and 1970s and further additions were made in the ’80s and ’90s. It’s an ongoing thing. Our fair is extremely fortunate to have the buildings and facilities that are here, said Booth, adding that they are some of the finest in the state. As the fairgrounds have expanded, so has the event. The fair has grown into the largest tourist attraction in Washington County. More than 100,000 people from around the country visit the fair each year, and Mario Cuomo, Hillary

Clinton, and George Pataki have all visited the event over the years. Booth said that over the years more attractions have been added. “There’s more entertainment, and the number of exhibits have increased over the years,” she said. That evolution has also included the disappearance of some events. Booth said there used to be a pony racing track where the midway is today and a steer sale during the 1970s that lasted three or four years before participation dwindled and the event faded into history. Today the fair features nearly three dozen rides, more than a hundred different concessions and displays by local businesses and organizations, dozens of entertainers and musical acts, a rodeo and a full slate of motor sports events. But the focus remains on agricul-

:DVKLQJWRQ &RXQW\ )DLUJURXQGV LQ ture. There are more than a dozen barns housing hundred of animals from cattle to swine, poultry and horses, all of which live exclusively on farms in Washington

County. Held each day are judged shows, horseback riding demonstrations, milking parlors, and even farmer Olympics for kids and adults alike. And central to the fair are youths and the role they play in

agriculture. “It’s all about education and youth involvement with agriculture. The youth are a huge part of it,” Booth said. Local 4-H groups are everpresent and Booth said the involvements of organizations like Future Farmers of America has grown. In 1995 the fair committee even began awarding scholarships to youth from Washington County. She said last’s year’s youth involvement bodes wells for the future. “The number of novice entries last year shows you the fair is alive and well and will continue to be so in the future.” This year’s fair begins on Aug. 19 and continues through Aug. 25. General admission is $10, and children 13 and under are free. A weeklong pass costs $30. Parking is free.

Midway rides deliver excitement for all ages Whether for kids seeking a thrill or those looking for something gentle, the midway at the Washington County Fair, which opens on Monday, Aug. 19, at 5 p.m., offers something for everyone. “There’s all sizes—kids, adults, everybody, said Morris Vivona, Jr., general manager of Amusements of America. For the little ones and more leisurely adults, the carousel and giant Ferris wheel will be on hand to offer rides with a view. For the not-so-faint of heart, Vertigo, a tower swing whips riders nearly 60 feet above the ground. The Flying Bobs, a carousel-like ride straps riders into “cars that whiz around an axle at high speeds. “There will be pretty close to 40 rides, Vivona said. “It’ll probably be the biggest fair yet. Amusements of America will be providing rides and attractions for the fair for the 13th year this August, and while the midway will feature rides that will be familiar to people who have attended the event in the past, such as Pharoah’s Arc, the Tilt-aWhirl, and Gravitron, the company tries to delivers something new each year. “We do our best to keep

the midway looking fresh. We try to rearrange the layout and we’re always trying to make improvements e a c h y e a r, Vivo n a said last year. Parents and young children alike will be pleased to visit this year’s addition. This year, he said the fair is opening up a new area in order to expand Kiddie Land. And the rides aren’t only one extreme or the other; there will be several that families can enjoy together. It takes a fleet of 75 trucks to get all the rides and other amusements to the fairgrounds in Easton each year and nearly two full days of work to get everything set up. It takes a couple of hundred people to get the midway up and running. In the past, Vivona said the rides at the fair use approximately 1,500 kilowatts of power and require a half-mile of wire. Amusements of America, which is listed in the Guiness Book of World Records as the largest traveling amusement park in the world, has been in the amusement business since

1939, according to the company’s website. The South Carolina-based business was begun by five brothers and its first p u r chase w a s t h e Ferris wheel from that year’s World Fair. Today the company has grown into a year-round operation that caters to 70 events a year from South Florida to the Canadian border and as far west as Ohio. Once the cold winds of winter begin to sweep across the county, the company heads to locations in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Though Vivona visits countless car nivals throughout the year, he said the Washington County Fair is a “great, great fair. “It’s not just fun and

games at the Washington County Fair; it’s very educational, and there is a lot of agriculture. It keeps the tradition of the 4-H agricultural fairs alive, he said. Ride tickets at the fair are $20 for a sheet of 20 (each ride requires three, four or five tickets), but if they are purchased before Aug. 18 the sheet of 20 will cost $8, a savings of 60 percent. There will also be two days when fairgoers can purchase a $20 wristband that allows for an entire day’s worth of rides. Those days are Tuesday, Aug. 20, and Sunday, Aug. 25. Gungho riders can also purchase 56 tickets for $50. The carnival is open 5 to 11 p.m. on Monday; noon to 11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday; and noon to 9 p.m. on Sunday. Rides will run during those hours, weather permitting.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Buffalo and Brandy Using drumming, music, singing and magic, Buffalo and Brandy present an entertaining show for all ages. In real life, they are husband and wife Ken and Mary-Ann Ferree. But on stage, the husband and wife duo are entertainers extraordinaire. Their high-energy performance for :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW children and families of all ages has :KHQ 7XHVGD\ )ULGD\ 6DWXUGD\ been capturing the imagination of 6XQGD\ QRRQ DQG SP audiences for 25 years. Not only do :HGQHVGD\ DQG SP they dazzle audiences, they spread a positive message through artistic expres7KXUVGD\ DQG SP sion and audience involvement. The duo, who are based out of Lockport, N.Y., travel widely performing at fairs, schools, libraries and other venues. Buffalo and Brandy sing, play instruments and communicate with their audience, all in an upbeat and friendly way.

Dragon Scales and Faerie Tales

New this year to the Washington County Fair, Dragon Scales and Faerie Tales is a magical telling of the birth of a real “live baby dragon. With the support of its loving faerie, the 8-foot :KHUH &DERRVH $UHD dragon hatches from a large golden egg. Together, the faerie and the :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ audience welcome the dragon, then DQG S P name him, feed him and teach him to talk. Little ones are enchanted by seeing the dragon come to life. “The kids absolutely love it, said Katybeth Mannix, of DreamWeaver, which produces the show. It concludes with the faerie asking the audience’s help to tell the dragon a bedtime story about the dragon’s search for a friend and his difficulty being accepted by the local villagers. The 20-minute story teaches the moral of not fearing those who are different, and not being afraid of new experiences. After the performance there is a meet and greet, where children have the opportunity to meet the dragon and get their photo taken with him. Dragon Scales and Faerie Tales has been performing for more than 20 years throughout the U.S. and Canada at state and county fairs, Renaissance fairs, and even Disney World and Six Flags.

Agricadabra

Not your typical educational demonstration, Agricadabra combines Brad Matchett’s passion for agriculture with humor to both educate and entertain audiences. An educational agricultural specialist, Brad begins every show with a 10 to 15 minute introduction during which he creates a balloon :KHUH 0DLQ 2IILFH sculpture and gives someone from the audience :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ an opportunity to take it home if they can tell him the average age of the farmer in their state. DQG S P He then launches into his show, where he 6DWXUGD\ teaches spectators about agriculture in their DQG S P state. He uses fun facts such as what percent of farmers in your state are women, what’s the difference between a broiler chicken and an egg layer and where does your state rank in production of each. He’ll sing Old McDonald, transform someone from the audience into a farmer, cook with Houdini Rabbit, and inflate a 6-foot balloon. Brad travels throughout the East delivering a crowd-pleasing show that is equal parts entertainment and education.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Hot Dog Pig Races Thoroughbred horse racing at Saratoga might be celebrating its 150th anniversary this year, but it’s got nothing on the high stakes races of the porcine variety at the Washington County Fair. One of the most popular attractions among both young and old, Hot Dog Pig Racing returns once again to the fair’s track on Bluebird Road for six days of exciting racing. Several pigs, dressed in racing silks, race around a track hamming for your attention. The 20-minute shows include the Hollywood Hog All Star, the Royal Pigs of Hamalot, the International Stunt Team, and The Super Hot Dog Team, a group of dachshunds dressed as hot dogs. :KHUH %OXHELUG 5RDG These awkward, but cute and cuddly, racing ani:KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ mals fascinate spectators. Real crowd pleasers, these S P natural comedians bolt from the starting gate and race around the track snorting and squealing, stubby legs churning and curly tails sailing along behind. It’s a delightful show, not to be missed!

Sylvia & The Magic Trunk Growing up in Los Angeles, Calif., Sylvia Fletcher was enthralled with great ventriloquists such as Paul Winchell and Shari Lewis. So fascinated, in fact, that at age five she asked her parents for “Willie Talk, a vent (ventriloquist) figure that came with a book on how to become a ventriloquist. She practiced every day, and by high school :KHUH )URQW 3RUFK 6WDJH she was performing at talent shows and at her :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ school. Over the years she cultivated her pas DQG S P sion and today travels throughout the Northeast with her “Magic Trunk, a box inhabited by a delightful bunch of quick-witted puppets. Her cast of characters includes Chito, a wisecracking Latino opossum, an outrageous southern bird who loves to steal the show, a genie that lives in a bottle and more. Whether at fairs, schools or corporate venues, audiences are treated to a show where they can believe that a puppet can truly talk.

Hansen’s Spectacular Acrobatic Sensations High-flying thrills are the order of the day at Hansen’s Spectacular Acrobatic Sensations. The act is a true family affair. Shane Hansen has been performing for more than 30 years, starting when he was just 3 years old as part of the “Roller Diamonds roller skating act :KHUH %URDGZD\ QHDU with his parents. His wife Alecia began perform&RPPXQLW\ /LYLQJ %OGJ ing with her family and their flying trapeze act :KHQ 7XHVGD\ )ULGD\ at age nine, and three years later would present S P her own “Cloudswing act that she currently 6DWXUGD\ 6XQGD\ performs in the fair show. DQG S P Daughters Olivia and Madison began performing at the age of three and two respectively and with their three-year-old sister, Ella, are some of the youngest thrill show performers in the world. “The kids are doing more with the aerial act this year, Shane said. This 30-minute show consists of five different acrobatic displays including high-flying trampoline, acrobatic roller skating, and an aerial swing over 30 feet high. New this year is Shane’s cube spinning act, in which he juggles inside of a turning metal-framed cube. This heart-stopping, one-of-a-kind family thrill show will leave audiences of any age breathless.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Puddles the Clown As an Easton native, Debbie Bartolucci is familiar with the Washington County Fair. She’s also well-known by children as Puddles the Clown. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bartolucci has :KHUH 3LFQLF 3DYLOLRQ spent the entire week at the fair delighting audiences :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ with her antics and painting the faces of children. With S P her full-face painting, she turns boys into pirates and little girls into princesses, making her a popular character at the fair. “It’s lots of fun, she said. “I get to see so many kids. Since first performing as a clown a couple of years ago, Bartolucci has thrown herself headlong into clown culture. In the past year, she has worked with a former Ringling Brothers clown and studied advanced face painting at the Circus Magic convention. She keeps busy with appearances at birthday parties, conventions and other local events, and she looks forward to returning to the fair this year and delighting all the children in attendance.

Bob Smith & Reindeer Cows, horses, pigs, fowl and reindeer. The Washington County Fair may seem like :KHUH ))$ )DUPODQG an unusual place to find a reindeer, but that’s exactly what you’ll find as Bob Smith :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ DOO GD\ and Reindeer return to the fairgrounds again this summer. Smith fell in love with reindeer 15 years ago and bought his own animals a year later. Ever since, he has shared the creature with the public at the Washington County Fair and other local events. Reindeer, which are similar to caribou, are part of the deer family and are most common in Arctic regions of Europe and Asia, and have been found in North America for the past century. Smith will bring two or three reindeer to the fair this year, and you may even see him walking them on a leash. While they can be petted, he says they aren’t overly keen on being touched, so he doesn’t force them to accept the attention if they aren’t in the mood. His exhibit will feature photos of reindeer and plenty of informational material. And he is always happy to answer questions and talk about the rein10 LA CROSS ST., HUDSON FALLS NY deer, so be sure to stop and visit.

MUSIC Smokey Greene Band Smokey Greene, one of the all-time, old-timers on the regional musical circuit, will be back at the Washington County Fair this year as he celebrates more than 60 years as “The Friendly Voice of country music in upstate New York. As a local disc jockey in the 1950s, he introduced the Glens Falls area to bluegrass music, and in 1972, he put on the region’s first bluegrass festival which ran for more :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW than a dozen years. Here he played with :KHQ 0RQGD\ S P DQG S P his band, the Green Mountain Boys. Throughout decades of bluegrass, Green has performed with such known names as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Tex Ritter. Greene, who first learned to play the banjo when he was 13, was born in Tinmouth, Vt., in 1930. He traveled the logging camps with his family, working with and often playing music for the loggers, which led him into a lifetime of music. While he’s enjoyed it all, he said his best memories are recent ones, working with young musicians. “Something that makes me feel real good is having had the chance these past 10 years to work with a lot of young talent, he said in a post on his website last year. “When you stand on stage with two or three musicians that are not even half your age, you get the feeling that your music will never die because there will be someone coming along to carry it on.

The Elderly Brothers

The Washington County Fair is something that attracts old and young alike. But for those yearning for a trip down memory lane to the middle of last century, the Elderly Brothers will perform six days in a row. The four-man group brings an old-time feel with their barbershop quartet roots and a cappella singing. The four-part harmonies come from tenor Rich Gervais, lead Jay Van Vranken, bassist Larry Wilbur and baritone Bob Whitney. Anyone who has seen “The Elderly Brothers knows that while they bring the old-time a cappella feel to the fair, they are not simply another barbershop quartet singing four-part harmonies. All four are members of the Racing City Chorus and have competed all over the world in barbershop quartet competitions. Racing City Chorus, based out of Saratoga Springs, is a men’s singing organization composed of more than 50 singers that have regular practices, performances and social events. The Elderly Brothers, who will perform Tuesday through Sunday, have been together as a group for a number of years, and their shows reflect that :KHUH )URQW 3RUFK 6WDJH :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6DWXUGD\ S P shared experience. They had known each other but performed in different quartets until sing 6XQGD\ S P ing together one night at a post-concert event. The blend worked and they stayed together. Their musical tastes start in the 1940s and 1950s, but move toward the present as well. You may hear them singing “Bye, Bye Love, “Dream, or “Don’t Break the Heart That Loves You. And those that want to add their note might have a chance during the fair to catch the group walking around or hum along as they take the stage.

MUSIC Adirondack Fiddlers

A standard at the fair for many years, the Adirondack Fiddlers will make things festive with a hearty set that will H make the audience move. :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW The group has :KHQ :HGQHVGD\ D P been playing DQG S P together for three and a half decades, since 1978, when several fiddlers gathered for music and friendship. Over the next decade, the sessions flourished w and friendships grew and in 1989, the group incorporated t as a nonprofit organization. Members now meet monthly to a promote the art of old-time fiddling and related dancing. The group is open to anyone who is interested in the t music, whether or not they can play a fiddle, said member Dorcas Baker. Meetings/jam sessions are held from 12 to 5 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month from September to June, at the American Legion Hall in Schuylerville. Members come from as far away as the Capital District, the Glens Falls region, Washington County and western Vermont. The Adirondack Fiddlers are a familiar sight at town concerts and festivals throughout the region.

Bobby Dick

Rock fans around the region know Bobby Dick from weddings, parties and other events. But the veteran performer isn’t just performing the same old hits—he’s regularly evolving his show. Dick separated from the Sundowners to do a solo act a couple of years ago and has since been performing “Rock ‘n’ Roll 101.â€? The show is a perfect match for a man who’s opened :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW :KHQ :HGQHVGD\ S P for the likes of the Rolling Stones, the Who, Tina Turner and more. DQG S P “It’s not just what it is, but all that it can be? Obviously at a concert, it’s more of a show, but at party dance venues, we let the people be the show,â€? Dick said on his website of his show. From his early days playing high school dances and singing in the subways of Brooklyn, to being leader of Bobby Dick & The Sundowners, his rock roots have earned his the equivalent of a rock and roll PhD. He said he can’t even remember what he sounds like after all the different voices he’s covered over the years, including Dion, Elvis, Bruce, Billy, Roy, the Beatles, Bono or other musicians from the 50s to today. He’s previously played at such venues as the Copacabana, the CafĂŠ Wha, the Palace Theater, the RPI Fieldhouse, Las Vegas, Forest Hills Stadium and the Hollywood Bowl and today can be found doing concerts, clubs, conventions, ski lodges and parties all over the country. He says he’s been doing so many voices over the years, he’s forgotten what he sounds like. Thankfully, it doesn’t matter what era or who he’s singing, whether it’s Dion, Elvis, Bruce, Billy, Roy, Beatles, Bono or Bobby, or ’50s, ’60s, ’70s, ’80s and ’90s to the present ... it’s all good. Bobby also loves to engage the audience with his stage banwww.countryhorizonrealty.net ter, comedy, parodies and just seeing the funny side of life. Bobby is joined by his wife Susan, also known as “DJ Susie Q,â€? 4 East Main Street, Granville, NY 12832 who provides background music, harmonies and a lead or two. Fax: (518) 642-0615 Bobby adds, “She’s also younger and stronger and makes a great roadie too.â€?

MUSIC The Hand Picked Band

A revival of a band that was originally started nearly 30 years ago, the current Hand Picked Band has been together for about three years. Tom Burke, on drums and vocals, is joined by Jeff Durkee on bass and lead vocals, and Glenn Pratt on lead guitar and vocals to make up the band, which is based :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW :KHQ 6DWXUGD\ S P out of Hudson Falls. The group plays old country, some new DQG S P country, classic rock and 50s era music. The original band, with Burke and Pratt, won a contest sponsored by WGNA in 1986. They earned a trip to Nashville, where they appeared on the television show “You Can Be a Star. And in 1989, Burke was named WVNR’s Male Vocalist of the Year and was runner-up for the Vermont station’s Entertainer of the Year award. Today the three-man band, which has regular gigs throughout the area, aims to give listeners a good time through easy-listening music.

Hair of the Dog Band

.

In a change from last year’s lineup, the Hair of the Dog will offer something that’s both a little different and high energy. A local and internationally known Celtic folk and rock band, Hair of the Dog has been playing together for 20 years. The sixman band has played at many towns and cities throughout the United States, regularly tours in Ireland and often headlines at Celtic Festivals. :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW Individual members come with their own clout as well. Fiddle player Larry Packer, for :KHQ 6XQGD\ S P example, had a top-ten hit DQG S P with a Jimi Hendrixproduced band, was a member of Sha Na Na and was a guest on Saturday Night Live’s third episode. And Rick Bedrosian, who provides bass and vocals, performed and recorded with Stevie Ray Vaughn, Marshall Crenshaw and others. This band knows Celtic music; some members of the band have been playing and singing Irish songs since they were children. And two of them attended the Berklee School of Music in Boston. The group has released 10 CDs since they started in 1993, including “At the Parting Glass and “Donegal. The Freeman Times, of Kingston, N.Y., said “Hair of the Dog plays with a cohesive oneness that most bands never get. They are a regional music treasure.

DANCING Country Western Dance Instructors’ Forum Anyone who’s ever wondered how country dancers know when to turn, step, lean back and more will have the opportunity to watch the professionals at the Country Western Dance Instructors’ Forum on Sunday, Aug. 25. Five or six dance instructors with between 80 and 100 students will be on hand performing and dancing, said Organizer Virginia Allen. “A lot of people enjoy watching line dancing. A lot of it is the music, and they like the instructors, Allen said, adding that those who are interested in learning line dancing but first want to see what it’s about enjoy the show. The majority of the dancing will be done by the instructors and students, but in between there will be audience participation as well. Part of what makes the instructors so popular is their vast,

combined experience. One of the instructors, for example, has been teaching for what Allen referred to as “only seven years. “I’ve been teaching for 50 odd years and dancing since I was 12, everything from Arthur Murray to :KHUH -XGJLQJ $UHQD 7HQW Zumba. All of the :KHQ 6XQGD\ S P instructors are experienced all together, Allen said. The instructors come from all over the region, and most of the dances are country-style. The group meets from September to May on a monthly basis and has regular events such as an appreciation dance and a food drive. So watch the show and wait for a chance to join in at this year’s fair.

TGIF & Tony’s Toe-sters Line Dancers

Though Virginia Allen has more than 20 years of experience line dancing at the fair, she’s started to let Tony Marcantonio, an exciting dancer, take over :KHUH -XGJLQJ $UHQD 7HQW the brunt of the selec:KHQ 6DWXUGD\ S P tion and organization process. Marcantonio, one of the region’s most experienced dance instructors, and Allen will join together once again this year to perform about 12 dances together. And they’ll even teach one to the crowd. The two instructors bring many, many years of experience to dancing and will demonstrate a variety of styles. Among other songs will be the “Hot Dog Boogie, Taylor Swift’s “Stay, Stay, Stay, “Inside Out, “Fighting Those Blue Jeans and

more. The pair, along with 80-100 students, will demonstrate and teach the various styles of line dancing. “We try to cover different things; it’s kind of a combination, Allen said. She thinks crowds like the interactive show TGIF and Marcantonio put on. Marcantonio teaches classes in Wilton and South Glens Falls, and Allen teaches in the area as well.

Merry Mohican Square and Round Dance Club After half a century of keeping the tradition alive, members of the Merry Mohican Square and Round Dance Club know how to do-si-do. The group, which just celebrated 50 years this past fall, will give a show at the fair on Sunday, Aug. 25. Lon and Hannah Penna will be the callers for between :KHUH %HHI %DUQ 16 and 20 people with alter:KHQ 6XQGD\ S P nates, who will make up two dance squares for people to watch, said Maureen Wall, vice president of the club. She said the group hopes to do a beginning session as well, where fair-goers can learn basic steps. “We usually have a good crowd. We always hope for the best, she said. The club starts classes each fall from September through April and then instructors graduate new dancers. Then the group, which consists of members of the tri-county area, travels all over the region to perform. Wall thinks anyone who stops by to see the club at the fair will enjoy it. “We always tell people it’s a lot of fun, it’s good for your health and you’ll have a good time doing it, she said.

MAPLE GRADES

• Tapping does no permanent damage to the sugar maple tree. • Tapping sugar maple trees is a tradition in the Upper Hudson River Valley since the 18th Century. • The sugaring season lasts usually from late February to early April. • It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. • Warm, sunny days and frosty nights are ideal for sap flow. • The harvest season ends with the coming of spring’s warm nights and the first stages of bud development on the trees. • New York is the second largest maple producing state in the nation.

50 - The 2013 Washington County Fair Program

4-H has strong presence at the fair Whether they’re showing a chicken, baked goods or photography, Washington County’s 4-H youth are always major participants at the Washington County Fair. “The fair is an opportunity for youth to showcase what they’re doing,” said Chrys Nestle, 4-H Educator for Washington County and the Youth Superintendent for the fair. Out of approximately 1,000 youth participating at the fair, 300 are 4-H members, she said. The mission mandates for 4-H are healthy living, citizenship, science, engineering and technology. The range of activities open to 4-H participants is diverse. In addition to animal science, in which members raise and prepare to show animals including chickens, rabbits, goats and cows, there are also opportunities to show artwork or baked goods. “Photography is huge,” Nestle said. “It has bloomed among all youth.” She credits the advent of digital photography and even phone cameras with the increase in popularity. Other areas include crafts, sewing and woodworking. Horse showing remains popular, as 4-Hers compete with their horses in both English and Western disciplines. Other possibilities for fair participation with 4-H include being a superintendent at the Poultry Barn or volunteering in

the 4-H food booth. The 4-H food booth has been an integral part of the fair since the event moved to its current location more than 50 years ago. It typically requires a crew of eight to 10, including a few adults, to operate. Even in today’s high-tech world, “the 4-H p r o gram in the county is steady,” Nestle said. One noticeable difference from 20 years ago is the fact that 4-H participants are a little younger now. At one time, she noted, the minimum age for 4-H was 8 years old. Now, members must be at least five years old and in kindergarten. To accommodate this younger set, 4-H has developed programs appropriate for their level of maturity. Nestle sees 4-H as an outstanding opportunity for youth to gain skills that will serve them throughout life. As they prepare their animal or item for show, she said, they gain organizational and time-management skills. They also gain leadership skills in 4-H, since they learn from their leaders and help with younger children as part of the process. Finally, Nestle said, they gain communication skills. At the fair, they

may be required to do a public presentation, or to converse with the judges about their project. Nestle also encourages them to do radio interviews at the f a i r, in order to gain public speaking skills. T h e 4 - H e r s ’ s u b m i s sions to the fair a r e judged on the Danish system. Instead of first, second or third place winners, there are blue, red and white awards. Each exhibit is judged by comparing it to a standard, not the other entries. The judges also take into consideration the age of the youth, the project and the amount of work the youth has done

in that area of expertise. “Part of their success,” Nestle said, “is being able to have a conversation with the judges.” While many 4-H exhibitors show animals from their family farm, those who live in a more urban environment can also participate by leasing an animal. A special New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets lease program allows youth to lease one animal. “It helps students who live in a village to learn about animal husbandry and prepare their animal for show,” Nestle said. Beyond the educational aspect of 4-H, participating at the fair gives the youth a well-rounded experience, Nestle said. “It’s a social thing as well – who they see, what they do at the fair,” she commented. “But it’s also an opportunity for growth and volunteerism, beyond just being at the fair.”

Masters of the Chainsaw Every craftsman has his tools. A weaver has a loom, a painter his brush and a writer his pen. The same is true for members of Masters of the Chainsaw; it’s just that their tools are gas-powered, rotating chains of fury that can transform a three-foot tall piece of wood into a piece of fine art in minutes. Masters of the Chainsaw is a limited group of the nation’s top professional chainsaw sculptors, dedicated to promoting and preserving the integrity of the art form and its perfor-

At a typical 45-minute show, from behind protective netting, onlookers will observe an original and captivating highenergy performance. With chainsaw roaring and chips flying, the carver’s precision and skill quickly transforms a log into art. Members of the group will show off their considerable skills several times a day throughout fair week, and some of their creations will be auctioned off at 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Visit the dairy princess at the fair

When most little girls were envious of their peers’ new dresses, dolls or diaries, Alison Parrott was jealous of their cows. This year’s dairy princess and a native of Hartford, Parrott said she always wanted to show cows, even though she didn’t grow up on a farm. She found her opportunity through a schoolmate’s family. “I had a friend who showed, and they asked me if I wanted to show some of their cows, Parrott said. She’s been hooked ever since. The 17-year-old high school senior owns a brown Swiss cow and has been showing cattle for about six years. She’s been a dairy ambassador for the same amount of time and has been involved with the Washington County Fair since she was in seventh grade. Parrott said all she had to

do to become an ambassador was fill out an application. “Anyone age five to 17 can be a dairy ambassador. You go to different events with the dairy princess like parades and fairs, she said. And after accompanying her predecessors to their duties, she finally got her chance this spring. To become a dairy princess, a young woman must be between the ages of 16 and 24, not be married and not have a child. After applying to become dairy princess, Parrott made it to an annual pageant where she was elected. She said the event included interviews with judges, a speech and impromptu questions. “The week leading up to it, I was nervous, but not for the actual day. By then I had gone over it so many times I was ready, she said. And her prep-

:DVKLQJWRQ &RXQW\ 'DLU\ 3ULQFHVV $OLVRQ 3DUURWW aration paid off. Her speech was about advertising about dairy and how it’s the ambassadors’ job to promote the dairy industry. “I was surprised, but it was a good surprise, she said. As dairy princess, Parrott said she promotes and educates the public about the importance of dairy products, goes to the

fair and participates in many parades, meetings, health fairs and other events. “I like seeing all the people and how surprised they are to be learning something. It’s spreading your knowledge to someone else, she said. At the fair, Parrott and her ambassadors will have a booth in the Agricultural Center #8. They will have a fake cow for children to milk and will hand out yogurt, cheese and other products. She said her role in the public as dairy princess has helped her become more mature. “Being a dairy princess has helped with my self-confidence and being able to talk to people, she said. As far as advice for others? “I’d just remind people to always get their three (servings of dairy) a day, she said.

Froggy 107.1 Karaoke Contest :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW :KHQ )ULGD\ S P

After only three years, the Froggy 107.1 Karaoke Contest has quickly established itself as one of the

most popular attractions during Fair Week. The contest pits 40 singers who were chosen after applying online through the station’s Facebook page. While performing, they will be judged on five attributes: singing ability, appearance, stage presence, audience participation and audience reaction.

:RRGODQG *DUGHQV

Those categories mean that singing and singing alone isn’t enough, instead it’s the overall performance. Even though Froggy is a country music station competitors are not limited to country music for their song choices. Last year’s contest had performers ranging in age from 18 years to seniors. After the preliminary round, the 40 contestants will be whittled down to the top five, from which the three finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges. Whether you know a contestant or not, the karaoke contest is not to be missed.

The 2013 Washington County Fair Program - 69

Washington County Fair Pro Rodeo and Youth Rodeo After several years of championship rodeos, organizers of the Washington County Fair reached a consensus: One day of bronco-busting action was not enough. “We’re very excited. This will be the first time there have been two days of professional rodeo during fair week, said Shana Graham of Painted Pony Rodeo in Lake Luzerne, which presents the competition each year. “These are the top cowboys and cowgirls—the best of the best. The rodeos will be held at 7 on Monday and Tuesday nights.

Contestants from throughout the country will compete in the rodeos, which are sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association, and Graham said the inclusion of a second day will attract even more contestants. “I think we’re going to get some big names because competitors need to compete in 15 PRCA events to qualify for the end of the year championships, and they will be able to do two in the same place, she said. Contestants will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money and a gold championship belt

More than a Fair Every year thousands of people flock to the Washington County Fair to revel in the joy and entertainment of fair week. It’s estimated upward of 100,000 people filter through the turnstiles every August. But there’s a lot more happening at the fairgrounds than just the fair itself. While no other single event can boast of such large crowds, the fairgrounds remain a busy place throughout the year. For seven months of the year, from April through October, the fairgrounds play host to a variety of notable events. The Washington County Antique Fair and Flea Market spends two weekends a year at the fairgrounds— the first weekends in May and August—and features more than 200 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. Dealers sell a variety of rare antiques, hard to find collectibles and a myriad of crafts. And because the show is traditionally held a week before the Brimfield, Mass., antique show, there are many items that appear for sale for the first time.

The 2014 shows will be held on May 3 and 4 and Aug. 2 and 3 and feature vendors in both indoor and outdoor venues. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is also an “early buyer” pass, which gives guests access to the show during setup on Friday. To learn more visit fairgroundshows.com. Another popular event held each year at the fairgrounds is the TriState Antique Tractor Club’s Show. The club, which is an affiliate of the national antique tractor association and has members in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts, is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of old farm machinery. The show features a large display of antique tractors, stone boat pulls, equipment demonstrations, a parade, an auction and children’s activities. For the past four years the fairgrounds have hosted the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival, a two-day celebration featuring more than 120 vendors from throughout the Northeast. The weekend includes workshops, demonstrations, live-

stock shows and much more. This year’s event will be held on Oct. 5 and 6. For more information, visit adkfiber.com. The local affiliate of the American Cancer Society has held its Bark for Life event at the fairgrounds for the past three years. This noncompetitive walk for dogs and their owners raises funds and awareness for the organization’s fight against cancer. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events by local groups and organizations. Horse, cow and rabbit shows, dog agility trials, livestock sales and other agricultural events are held there throughout the year. Local Scout groups and 4H clubs often hold events at the fairgrounds, and the Washington County Seniors held their annual picnic there last month. The grounds are also available for family reunions, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraisers and other private events. To learn more about the events held at the fairgrounds or to inquire how you could hold your own event, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.

Stephens CJD to sponsor Rammunition One of the most feared monster trucks in the country is coming to the Washington County Fair. There are trucks, and then there is the Raminator. The 5-ton 2013 Ram Heavy Duty features a 565 cubic inch Super-Charged Hemi engine that cranks out 2,000 horsepower and 66 inch tires. Hall Brothers Racing debuted the original Raminator in January 2002, and it was named Truck of the Year after winning four of seven Pro Monster Truck series races. The truck went on to win titles in each of the next four years, a stretch

of dominance matched only by Team Big Foot’s four straight Penda Series Championships. Since that time, Tim and Mark Hall, owners of the Raminator, have added Rammunition, which wasted no time in establishing itself as one of the most feared opponents in monster truck racing. The Ramnunition is driven by Geremie Dishman. The car will be on display on Memory Lane Friday through Sunday and will perform a car-crushing exposition before Sunday’s Demolition Derby.

Fair hosts baking contest Baking contests sponsored by national companies are usually only held at major state fairs, but the Washington County Fair is one of the rare county fairs that can boast of a contest sponsored by the King Arthur Flour Company. The event was brought to the fair by Mike Bittel, the King Arthur Flour Senior Vice

President/General Manager who lives in Washington County, and who lobbied for a local version of the national baking competitions. Bittel will be one of the judges at this year’s event. This year, adult contestants will compete to make their favorite scone, sweet or savory recipe.
