Must Do Holiday Activities The Holidays are here with Winter Delights and a Giving Spirit Nature’s stage is set for the holidays. Whether Adirondack or Green, the mountains above us are bare and blue with cold. Thermometer red huddles at the bottom for warmth. And the wind that whips off Champlain, Bomoseen or Catherine reminds us all of winter coats. In cities, towns and villages, workers playing elves have strung holiday lights as high up as they can, and then flipped the switch. All that we need now is…snow. “It’s that festive season of the year,” Charles Dickens once wrote. And that master of “Christmas Carol” cheer would urge us all, if he were here, to hold the holidays to our hearts and reach out for

each and every treat of the season. Here at Manchester Newspapers, we have put together the best list that we can of ways and means to make “merry” during the holidays. Contained within the following pages are all of the tree lightings, craft fairs, holiday bazaars, music venues, decorated rail trains, lighted skating rinks and packedpowder ski slopes that we could find by word of mouth, phone or email. So while you read this, as you sip from your bowl of Christmas punch, think hard and choose carefully from our generous menu of holiday merry-making suggestions.

Tree lightings and community celebrations Granville, N.Y.

Granville will ring in the holiday season with its tree lighting ceremony at 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 5. Last year’s event attracted upward of 1,000 spectators who showed up to enjoy the festive atmosphere and observe the thousands of lights that were hung throughout Veterans Park. And with an additional 24,000 lights, this year’s event is expected to be even larger. The popular event features a number of activities including the tree lighting, horse drawn wagon rides, music, sky lanterns, face painting and a camp fire. In addition, the event has been scheduled to coincide with the Slate Valley Museum and Pember Library and Museum’s First Friday celebration. The theme for this year’s event is “Polar Express Comes to Granville” and efforts have been made to incorporate different elements of that theme in the event. The tree will be lit to e “Seeing is Believing,” a song from the 2004 film, the Slate Valley Museum will have a model

train on display during its Festival of Trees and the Pember will host a children’s event in which the story is read. Santa Claus will usher in the celebration and after a few words from local dignitaries, the tree will be lit. Santa will then sit down to meet children. Wings’ Clydesdales will offer complimentary horse drawn rides throughout the village, guests can cook s’mores and the auxiliaries of the local VFW and American Legion posts will have baked goods available. The museums’ First Friday activities, located only a short walk from the park, will begin at 7 p.m.

Greenwich, N.Y.

On Sunday, Dec. 7, the Greenwich community will host its Everlasting Lights ceremony beginning at 5 p.m. at the Town Commons at 2 Academy Street. The event, in its 14th year, features dozens of trees decorated in memory of local residents. After a few words from Sara Idleman, town supervisor, the names on each memory tree are read aloud, and then all the trees are lit at one time. For more information about this event, call 692-7611. The following Sunday, from 3 to 6 p.m. on Dec. 14, will be the Greenwich Holiday Tour of Homes, which features homes

Gift of Life Marathon Rutland’s Gift of Life Marathon is getting a makeover. The record setting blood drive, which has set the standard for one-day blood drives, will consist of 12 blood drives over 12 days. The revamped “Gift-of-Life Marathon - 12 Days of Giving” will run from Dec. 2 to 16 at sites throughout the Rutland region, and will be the longest blood drive in U.S. history. “The GOLM will change significantly, the changes intended to help ensure that this important community-building tradition will have a long life and save lives for years to come,” Steve Costello, Green Mountain Power Vice President said. “It will continue to bring the greater Rutland community together in a way we never imagined 11 years ago, while providing blood at a critical time of year.” The event is sponsored by Green Mountain Power, Castleton State College, WJJR and the Red Cross. Costello, Terry Jaye from WJJR and Castleton College President Dave Wolk announced plans for the 2014 GOLM, shifting the focus from one-day records to a sustainable model with less stress for donors, volunteers, organizers and the Red Cross. There will be far more options to donate. “We are thrilled that Rutland broke the national record, but it was clear to all of us that we needed to change the

Manchester Newspapers’ Holiday Guide - Week of November 17, 2014 - 9 model if it were to continue to be successful,” said Terry Jaye, program manager at WJJR. “We hope to maintain the sense of community while expanding the effort throughout the Rutland region.” The new format was designed to help ensure an adequate regional blood supply without the expense and huge logistical challenges of a massive one-day drive, which required hundreds of volunteers and workers, many of them coming from other states. Organizers are not setting a numerical goal this year, but hope to collect as much blood as possible. Appointments, which are strongly encouraged, may be made by calling 800-RED-CROSS or by visiting www. giftoflifemarathon.com. While supplies last, donors will receive gifts from Killington Resort and The Vermont Country Store. The Gift-of-Life Marathon collected 368 pints in its first year, 2003, and it quickly grew. The drive collected 1,024 pints in 2009, when New York filmmaker Art Jones filmed the event for the documentary “The Blood in This Town,” and set the New England record. In 2013, after two previous attempts to break the national record of 1,968 pints, the GOLM collected a whopping 2,350 pints of blood and shattered the old mark. Rutland has now held three of the four largest blood drives in American history. The GOLM - 12 Days of Giving will be held: • Dec. 2 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Castleton College • Dec. 3 from noon to 6 p.m. at U.S. Army Reserve on Post Road in Rutland Town • Dec. 5 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rutland High School

“A Christmas Story” will be presented as “A Christmas Story: The Musical” at the Wood Theater in Glens Falls. • Dec. 6 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Diamond Run Mall

• Dec. 13 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rutland Elks Club

Paramount Theatre Festival of Trees Holiday shoppers will enjoy the many craft and art fairs in the area. through Dec. 13. More than 600 visitors enjoyed last year's festival and museum staff said this year’s event is expected to be even bigger. Attendees can begin viewing trees during the afternoon of Dec. 5. Staff expect there to be upward of 30 trees and the museum’s décor will feature a miniature holiday village, model trains and winter scenes. The museum will also provide a free holiday art activity for children, which typically incorporates slate as part of the end product. Attendees are encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item to donate. This year’s festival will be complemented by the Pember Library’s inaugural Festival of Wreaths. Residents have been invited to created holiday-themed wreaths that will be on display at the library. “We are so excited to collaborate more closely with the Pember this Christmas,” said Molly Biggs Celani, president of the Slate Museum’s board. “Their Festival of Wreaths will really add to the holiday experience here in Granville.” The two museums’ festivals will coincide with the village’s spectacular lighting ceremony. The Slate Valley Museum is located at 17 Water St. while the Pember is nearby at 33 West Main St. The institutions are connected by a covered bridge spanning the Mettowee River. North County Festival of Trees

The 23rd annual North Country Festival of Trees will be held Dec. 5-7 at the Queensbury Hotel on Ridge Street in Glens Falls. Over the years, the festival has grown into an eagerly anticipated family event, and, for many, kicks off the holiday season in the North Country. The festival features intricately decorated trees, wreaths, centerpieces, fireplace mantel-scapes, stockings and gingerbread houses, which help transform the museum into a winter wonderland. The festival includes a Children’s Wonderland where kids can enjoy arts and crafts, games and activities, and an opportunity to meet Santa. A champagne gala and reception from 6 to 10 p.m. on Dec. 4 will afford guests an opportunity to view and purchase displays before the festival opens to the public. Entertainment will be provided by Bobby Dick and Susie W. The cost is $75. On Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 6 and 7, at 8 a.m., children can sit down to breakfast with Kris Kringle and enjoy the festival before it opens to the general public. The cost of $13 includes breakfast, a private viewing of festival displays and a keepsake from Santa. Seating is limited, so guests are encouraged to call and

make reservations. Prior to the official unveiling of the festival on Dec. 5, senior citizens will be given the opportunity to view the displays at their own pace as well as attend a gourmet lunch. The luncheon begins at noon and costs $18. Reservations are suggested. On Saturday, Dec. 6, the annual Sugar Plum Ball will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. The event will feature dancing and entertainment by Radio Disney. Tickets cost $13. The festival is open from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. The cost of admission is $7, $5 for senior citizens and $3 for children 12 and younger. This event benefits Prospect Center, a non-profit agency for children and adults with developmental disabilities. For more information, or to make reservations for any of the events, call 518-832-6124.

Bennington Museum Festival of Trees

In Vermont, the Bennington Museum will host its annual Festival of Trees from Nov. 28 through Dec. 30. The 18th annual event features trees and displays created by community members using items from the museum’s collection, which are rarely on display. “Some are whimsical, others are elegantly created, and all are inspired by the theme ‘Reflections’ and take inspiration from an object from the collection

that reflects or is reflective and rarely on exhibit in the galleries,” said Susan Strano, the museum’s marketing coordinator. Artists and designers, local businesses, non-profit and service organizations and students in Bennington and surrounding communities design and create the displays. The museum will be further adorned with decorations created by Joyce Hall and Hyacinthe Burnham. Added to these are tabletop trees, decorated by local elementary school classes. This year’s annual Holiday Gala will take place from 7 to 10 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6. This is the premier event of Bennington’s holiday season and the museum’s largest annual fundraiser. Guests will enjoy innovative cuisine from Chef Greg Roach of Wild Oats Market in Williamstown, Mass., dance to music by the Jeff McRae Band, indulge in specialty drinks made exclusively for the event and have the opportunity to bid on more than 50 items, included as part of a silent auction (guests to the museum can bid on items from Nov. 24 through Dec. 6). The cost to attend the gala is $85 and reservations can be made by calling the museum at 802-447-1571. But perhaps the largest, and most popular event, is the Festival of Trees Family Day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13. Guests will be able to enjoy the displays, participate in craft activities and

With hefty operating costs, the theater is reliant on community support and each year the festival has grown. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and auctioneer Bob Prozzo will begin presenting items at 7 p.m. Food will be provided by Roots the Restaurant and will feature a cash bar. Admission is $10.

Skiing and snowboarding Bromley Mountain

Elevation: 3,284 feet Vertical Drop: 1,334 feet Trails: 46 Lifts: 10 Anticipated opening: Nov. 28

Just outside of Manchester, Vt., Bromley Mountain Ski Resort is the only major ski area in New England with a southern exposure, which has earned the resort the moniker of “The Sun Mountain.” The resort is frequently cited as a family friendly destination because of its ski and snowboard school, shorter lift lines and central base area. During the last several years, Bromley has invested heavily in maintaining its skiable surfaces and that trend has continued this year. The resort has added78

high-efficiency HKD tower guns, which are particularly adept at producing snow in early season conditions. The resort is also implementing a Snowmaking Energy Index that will allow staff to measure the effectiveness of its snowmaking process and make adjustments to increase efficiency. A classic New England ski resort, Bromley features varied terrain for all ability levels. Novice skiers and riders will enjoy taking their first turns on East Meadow and will find that linking the Run Around trails is the easiest route from the summit. More advanced skiers and riders will want to head to the mountain’s steeper and more difficult East Side, where they will find trails like Stargazer and Havoc. The resort is also resurrecting its expert terrain park, Halo. The resort hosts several special events throughout the season. On Dec. 21, anyone 6 and older can learn to ski or snowboard for free. All you have to do is preregister by Dec. 20. To learn more, call 802-824-5522, or visit www.bromley.com.

Stratton Mountain

Elevation: 3,875 feet Vertical Drop: 2,003 Trails: 97 Lifts: 11 Anticipated opening: Nov. 26

Located in Bondville, Vt., Stratton Mountain is a world-class resort known for its grooming, expansive snowmaking coverage, terrain parks and its many amenities. At the base of the mountain rests Stratton Village, with its assortment of stores and restaurants. The mountain itself is one of the highest in southern Vermont and the resort boasts 670 acres of skiable ter-

rain. Although the resort can be busy during the holiday periods, skiers and riders can count on Stratton’s fleet of high speeds lifts (including a gondola and several six-packs) to quickly carry them to the summit. The resort has the ability to transport more than 33,000 skiers and snowboarders per hour up the mountain, meaning if there are any lift lines they move quickly. Once on top, folks will find a variety of trails ranging from the benign to the difficult. The resort is also home to some of the most technical terrain parks in the country, and the resort’s glade skiing, when there is adequate snow, may be unrivaled in southwest Vermont. For the 2014-15 season, the resort has invested $7 million. Following on the heels of last year’s $10.5 million investment, this year’s investment was used to purchase 58 gondola cabins, 350 HKD snowmaking guns, 20 air/water snowmaking guns and two intermediate glades. There are also new shops in Stratton Village. The resort will host its ninth annual Gobble Gobble Wobble 5K on Nov. 27. Other popular events include the New Year’s Eve Celebration, the Tubbs Romp to Stomp Out Breast Cancer on Feb. 28, and the Vermont Open March 12-15. The resort also has a number of additional activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, ice skating, guided snowmobile tours, and more. For more information and ticket prices, contact Stratton Mountain at 1-800-Stratton or visit www.stratton. com.

Magic Mountain

Elevation: 2,850 feet Vertical Drop: 1,700 feet Trails: 43

Lifts: 4 Anticipated opening: Mid-December (possibly earlier depending on weather conditions). Located just off Route 11 near the junction with Route 100 in Londonderry, Vt., Magic Mountain is a classic New England resort with steep narrow twisting trails, moderate groomers, and tremendous glade skiing that help make it one of Vermont’s best-kept secrets. Outside Magazine described Magic Mountain as a “195-acre hidden gem” and it’s one of the last truly independent resorts in Vermont. In fact, many locals will bypass larger more modern resorts in the area after a large snow storm to enjoy the challenging, uncrowded slopes of Magic Mountain. Roughly 40 percent of the terrain is rated as black diamond or double-black diamond, which is considered the most challenging type of terrain. Those who like to “earn their turns” can climb the mountain and ski or snowboard down at no charge. If fancy base lodges and spa services are less important than challenging terrain, Magic Mountain is worth a visit. For more information and ticket rates, call the Mountain at 802-824-5645 or visit www.magicmtn.com.

Nearly $400,000 has been invested in the resort’s snow-making equipment, including more than 4,000 feet of 10-inch pipe. That pipe will help double the resort’s snow-making abilities and allow it to operate more efficient snowmaking guns. The mountain will continue to offer night skiing, allowing students and adults alike the opportunity to enjoy some skiing and riding after work or school, and $250,000 will be spent this winter in new and improved trail lighting. The resort has also adopted a new ticketing system for its tubing park. Each tickets will be good for a specific time period so that the resort doesn’t run out of tubes at any given time. The lift is capable of transporting skiers and riders 6,400 feet in just over six minutes. All 113 seats are heated, the only lift in the Northeast with that feature. The resort has also purchased 100 HKD snowmaking guns and has hired Snow Park Technologies, one of the world’s leading consulting teams for special projects on snow, to construct its terrain parks. Killington/Pico

Elevation: 4,241 feet Vertical Drop: 3,050 feet Trails: 212 (155 at Killington; 57 at Pico) Lifts: 29 (22 at Killington, seven at Pico) Anticipated opening: Already open, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekends.

Nicknamed “The Beast,” Killington is one of the largest ski resorts in the Eastern United States. The resort, which consists of seven distinct peaks, including Pico Mountain, sits on 3,000 acres in Killington, Vt., and features more than 92 miles of diverse terrain. Because of Killington’s elevation (its highest point rests more than 4,000 feet above sea level) and more than 1,200 snow guns, the resort is typically one of the earliest resorts on the East Coast to open and one of the last to close. Killington is known for its diversity of terrain and grooming expertise, providing skiers and riders of all ability levels a choice of wide-open groomed cruisers, narrow classic New England runs, moguls, steeps and 16 tree skiing areas. Killington also offers multiple terrain parks. Off-mountain activities include cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice skating, combined with more than 100 restaurants and bars and shopping options throughout the region. The resort also hosts a number of events throughout the season. For more information, visit www. killington.com or call 802-422-6200. The above is but a sampling of the ski resorts in the area. Anyone willing to travel a bit further can find a variety of other ski resorts in the region including Mount Snow, the Middlebury Snow Bowl and Sugarbush, all in Vermont. In New York, state-owned Gore Mountain and Whiteface Mountain offer excellent skiing and snowboarding opportunities. Hickory Ski Center in Warrensburg also offers a rustic skiing experience during winters when there is sufficient snowfall.

26 - Week of November 17, 2014 - Manchester Newspapers’ Holiday Guide

Holiday living made easy With so much on our plates between Thanksgiving and New YearÕs Day, the holiday season can be hectic. Fortunately, there are many ways to save time and make the holiday season more manageable. • If you donÕt have plastic clips to hang lights around windows and to the eaves of your home, inexpensive clothespins will work just as well. If youÕre concerned about the color of the wooden clips, paint them holiday hues before stringing the lights. • Put a bath mat, rug-side down and rubber-side up, beneath your Christmas tree stand. This allows you to spin the tree as you hang lights and ornaments without damaging the floor underneath. It also makes it simple to undress the tree once the season is over. Use a tree skirt to hide the mat. • Squeeze artificial tree portions into concrete form tubes. First wrap the tree portions in twine and then slip them into the concrete sleeves. Each tube can be stowed in attic or garage rafters, freeing up precious space. • Use empty squirt bottles to make baking and cooking easier. Pancake and cookie batters can be squirted from the containers for less mess. • Store one or two strings of lights in a plastic shopping bag to keep the strands from getting tangled. Hang the bags from a hook in a garage or stack them in a storage bin. • Use plastic zip ties to attach garland and lights to bannisters. TheyÕre easy to assemble and will not damage the bannisters. • A paper towel holder can be screwed to the wall in a craft room to neatly hold spools of ribbon. Simply pull the length you need from the spool and cut for easy decorating. • Mount a tree stand to a piece of wood with screws or glue. This prevents spills from reaching the floor while stabilizing the tree. • Old maps make interesting gift wrap and are a nice change of pace from commercially produced paper or newsprint. • Wrap duct tape or another type of sticky tape around your hand. Pat over fallen pine needles that accumulate around the tree. In hard-to-reach areas, wrap the tape around a broom or a floor sweeper. • When traveling for the holidays, use a brightly colored suitcase or flashy tape to make your suitcase stand out from others at the airport. • Place hardened brown sugar in a

The task of wrapping gifts can be fun and not stressful. A few simple strategies can help you save time and reduce stress this holiday season.

Gift wrap tricks to save time

baking dish, cover it with a moist paper towel and either microwave it on high for 20-second intervals or place it in a 300 F oven for five minutes. This will soften the sugar, making it easier to use the sugar to prepare your favorite holiday cookie recipes. • Save plastic bread ties, which can be used to make tags for the wires on certain devices. Such ties also can be used to organize decorating components and to keep your place on a roll of tape. • Measure the inside of your picture window and construct a wooden frame to its dimensions. Staple holiday lights to the frame and then easily slip the frame in and out of place each year. • Hang a live wreath or some boughs of evergreen in your home to give it that fresh pine scent if you have an artificial tree. • Color-code storage containers so you can easily find holiday decorations in the attic or basement. • Pack for a holiday excursion using a collapsible clothing storage hanger for closets. Fold clothes on each fabric shelf and then collapse it into your suitcase. When you get to your destination, unfold and hang it in a closet so all of your clothes will be at the ready. Make the holidays even more enjoyable with a variety of timesavers and clever tips.

Holiday shopping may be done, but that enormous pile of presents still needs to be wrapped. People have varying degrees of ability with regard to wrapping gifts. Some excel at those creased corners and perfect bows, while others are less adept at wrapping. The task of wrapping gifts may not be something to look forward to, but wrapping gifts is an essential element of the holiday season. Fortunately, there are a few tricks of the trade wrappers can lean on to make the process of wrapping gifts go as quickly and as smoothly as possible. • Stock up on double-sided tape. Wrapping with double-sided tape helps you avoid unsightly tape lines and creates a neat finished product. • Use a toilet paper tube to preserve wrapping paper rolls and keep them from unravelling. Simply cut the tube lengthwise and snap it over the open roll of paper to serve as a handy clip to keep the paper tidy. • When you lose the edge of the tape on a roll, it can take precious time trying to find it again and then lift a piece of tape off the roll. Use a plastic bread clip to hold the place of the edge of the tape to prevent this from happening. • Turn snack containers into handy gift wrap options. Empty potato chip cannisters can be wrapped and used to hold other food gifts or smaller stock-

ing stuffers. Turn a foil-lined chip or popcorn bag inside out, first cleaning away any grease and crumbs, and use the bag to wrap a gift and tie off the end with a decorative ribbon. • Wooden spoons or popsicle sticks can make clever gift tags. Poke a hole in the end and tie onto your gift. • Use a piece of fabric to wrap a present if youÕre not too skilled with traditional paper. Fabric can be reused and is more durable, and you wonÕt run the risk of tearing an edge or poking a hole through it. This can be especially useful for oddly shaped gifts. • Newsprint tied with natural cord and some pine boughs is an inexpensive, classic-looking gift wrap. • Kraft butcher paper or brown mailing paper can be used in a pinch. Stamp images on the paper to customize the gift wrap and use ribbons and bows to further dress things up. • Always work on a hard, flat surface, as working on the floor or a soft surface makes it more difficult to control wrapping paper and youÕre more likely to tear the paper. • Use a gift box or cardboard to create a firm container to wrap soft gifts. • Reuse old boxes to create a greeting card. Use a piece of ribbon and a bow and your newly created card as a thank-you or gift tag for future gifts. This is a great way to recycle during a season when excess is common.

How to establish holiday gift spending limits As the cost of living continues to rise, holiday shopping also has become much more expensive in recent years, and it can be easy for shoppers to overextend themselves financially come the holiday season. According to a recent Gallup poll, the average American plans to spend around $790 per holiday season, although many go above and beyond that amount. Starting off the new year in debt is a recipe for stress, which can have negative repercussions for the rest of the year. In addition to overspending during the holiday season, many people stretch themselves thin on ValentineÕs Day, birthdays, and MotherÕs Day and FatherÕs Day. One way to make shopping more manageable is to establish spending limits that dictate how much each family member can spend on each gift he or she buys. It is important to exercise tact when approaching the subject of gift limits. Discuss the topic with friends and family members with whom you usually exchange gifts long before the holiday season. Agree on a reasonable amount of money each person will spend on gifts. If necessary, ask everyone to write down a figure and then

determine the average, using that figure as your spending limit. Establishing a spending limit makes it easier for every family to afford their holiday purchases. If there are six people on your shopping list and youÕre spending $50 per person, you know to allocate $300 for gifts. Saving and budgeting can be adjusted accordingly. When no such limit is established, you may go overboard to compensate, even if you cannot afford to do so. Another way to save money is to suggest giving the gift of experiences rather than tangible and potentially costly gifts. For example, take a loved one out for dinner or suggest going on vacation together to make better use of your collective funds. A welltimed extended family vacation in lieu of gift exchanges may alleviate the stress of the holiday season, much of which can be traced to holiday spending. Establishing a gift-giving strategy and budget for each person to work with can make for a more peaceful holiday season by freeing up time to spend with loved ones and placing the focus on family instead of shopping.

Holiday spending limits can help individuals avoid overspending come the holiday season.
