The 2014 Washington County Fair Program - 13

)DLU LV FRXQW\œV ODUJHVW DWWUDFWLRQ Dating back to 1883, the Washington County Fair has been the ultimate culmination of agriculture and entertainment for residents of Washington County. The fair exhibits the hard work and dedication of those involved in the agriculture field and allows everyone to come together and enjoy the best of what the area has to offer. Every year a multitude of attractions draws people to the fairgrounds to celebrate. Whether it’s the tractor pulls, the rides, the food, winning prizes or the educational experience of discovering the vast agriculture of the county, people pour into the fairgrounds each year. For the first six years of its existence the fair was held in the Town of Jackson and was hosted by the Farmers and Mechanics Agricultural Society. After its time at Lake Lauderdale Park in Jackson, a new society called the Cambridge Valley Ag ricultural Society and Stock Breeders Association took control and relocated the fair to a new location in Cambridge. In its time at the

Cambridge location, the fair grew exponentially more popular and began to draw crowds from further away. Prior to the popularization of private automobiles, trains were the ideal way for scores of “out-of-towners to make their way to the fair. The

for 200 horses, a half-mile track, a 2,500-seat grandstand, and seven acres of buildings. Perhaps the largest impact that the Cambridge location had on the fair was in 1929, when the fairground garnered the power of electricity.

:DVKLQJWRQ &RXQW\ )DLUJURXQGV FLUFD ODWH ¡V Delaware & Hudson Canal Co. Railroad offered a very popular service at the time; the company would supply round trip rides to and from the fair, which would also include admission. Residents from Granville, Fort Ann, Fort Edward and other areas could all utilize this service for under $3. The popularity of the Cambridge site was probably due to the fact that it included 40 acres, stables

World War II had a negative impact on the fair, as the fairgrounds were not open during the war, leading to its bankruptcy. The bankruptcy could have stymied the growth of the fair or destroyed the fair all together, but ultimately, it didn’t. The Cambridge Valley Agricultural Society and Washington County Junior Fair, which were previously two separate organizations, joined forc-

es and in 1954 the fair was conducted at the intersection of Routes 29 and 40 in Greenwich, the presentday location of the Hannaford Supermarket. The two Boards of Directors, although working together, were still separate boards, and they decided to move the fair in 1961 to its current location at the intersection of Route 29 and Old Schuylerville Road in Greenwich, which was initially purchased as a 25-acre plot but has grown immensely ever since. The 1960s and 70s in particular saw drastic expansion of the fair grounds, which allowed the event to become the spectacle that it is today. “There were new buildings added almost every year through the 1960s and 1970s and further additions were made in the 80s and 90s, said JoAnne Booth, former committee chair. “It’s an ongoing thing. Our fair is extremely fortunate to have the buildings and facilities that are here. In 1967, a 43-acre parcel was added on to the grounds and four years later a dormitory was added to supply housing

for the large number of kids involved in the fair, especially those involved in the 4-H and Future Farmers of America programs. In 1977, a historic school house was erected at the fairgrounds. The 1970s also saw some events and attractions come and go, such as pony racing which lasted three or four years. In 1991, the Cambridge Valley Ag ricultural Society Board of Directors and the Washington County Junior Fair Board of Directors, which had been working together for decades, finally merged into one 32-member volunteer board. The name of the new organization was simply the Washington County Fair Inc., which has stuck as the name ever since. In 1999, the agriculture center was built and in

:DVKLQJWRQ &RXQW\ )DLUJURXQGV LQ 2008 another 40 acres were thrown into the mix to make sure there was plenty of room to park for the thousands who come, while also allowing some room for potential expansion of the event.

Currently, the fairground stands at 120 acres and the fair is now the largest tourist attraction in Washington County, with more than 100,000 people flocking to it from all over the country each

year. Even some famous politicians weren’t left saying “holy smokes we’re missing the fair, as the likes of Hillary Clinton, George Pataki and Mario Cuomo have made their way to Greenwich to celebrate the area’s agriculture. This year’s fair kicks off on Monday, Aug. 18, with the gates opening at 5 p.m. The gates will open at 9 a.m. the remainder of the week, through the final day on Sunday, Aug. 24. Admission is $10 per day; all-week passes are available for $30. Kids under 13 get in free, as do active military personnel with valid identification. There will be a carnival fun day, senior citizen day, children’s day and family fun day, each offering unique discounts. As usual, parking is free.

Midway rides await young and old The bright lights of the midway, the thrill-inducing carnival rides and the serenity of a carousel are all available at the fair’s midway, providing entertainment for young and old. For the 14th year, the carnival section of the fair will be provided by Amusements of America, a New J e r s e y based traveling carnival o p e r a t o r. This year will feature more than 40 rides, which will be open 5-11 p.m. on Monday, noon-11 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon-9 p.m. on Sunday. All days are “weather permitting to ensure riders’ safety. It is easy for people to determine what rides are suited for them, as the company ranks its rides into four distinct categories. The categories, from most adventurous to least adventurous, are spectacular rides, thrill rides, family rides and kiddy rides. Amusements of America

can be found in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest travelling Amusement Park. The company is one of the nation’s largest amusement suppliers to date, spanning the Eastern United States, into the Midwest. The company takes pride in every detail of its amuse-

from the 1939 World’s Fair. Vivona’s five sons would haul the wheel around from town to town, until it wore out, and then they got themselves some new rides. “We bought the Ferris wheel, Morris Vivona, one of the brothers said. “We took it and the ice cream machine and we played

ment process, the rides, the presentation, the music, the vendors. “The actual presentation of our midway is a vital component of our success, a spokesman said. “We pay strict attention to every detail in an effort to assure our event will provide the public with maximum entertainment. This is the company’s 74th year. The company was established in 1940 when Antonio Vivona purchased the Ferris wheel

local festivals in New Jersey. Ever since then, the Vivona family has owned and operated this company and they offer experience working in the realm of amusement and making their own ice cream, which was the family business prior to getting involved in travelling carnivals. The original Vivona brothers are in their 70s and 80s and although they still frequently tour with the carnival, much of the

operations have been handed over to their children. “Our children know what to do, Morris said. “They know how to set the fair up, take it down, do the booking and operate it. We’re just out here to help them. The family members who choose to travel with the car nival find themselves on the road for eight and a half months out of the year. Their season usually r uns from March until early November, giving the brothers some time off in the winter months, but that’s about it. For this year’s fair, rides vary in price from 3-5 tickets each, with sheets of 20 tickets costing $20. However, if you purchase tickets prior to Aug. 17, the 20-ticket sheets will be available for only $8, which is 60 percent off the normal price. In addition, both Tuesday and Sunday give fairgoers the chance to ride all of the rides, all day long, for just $20.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Buffalo and Brandy Friends and family call them Ken and Mary-Anne Faree, but when they step on stage they transform into Buffalo and Brandy. This husband and wife duo enjoys bringing different blends of entertainment, singing traditional pop country songs intertwined with synthesizer-laced, up-beat music. :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW Their musical journey together has :KHQ 7XHVGD\ )ULGD\ 6DWXUGD\ brought them all over the United States 6XQGD\ DQG S P for more than 25 years now performing at fairs, schools, libraries and many other :HGQHVGD\ S P DQG S P venues. 7KXUVGD\ DQG S P The duo has a certain way of bringing positive vibes to their audiences through their instruments and Mary-Anne, “Brandy’s, voice. Not only do they dazzle audiences, they spread a positive message through artistic expression and audience involvement. Buffalo and Brandy sing, play instruments and communicate with their audience, all in an upbeat and friendly way.

Agri-cadabra The concept of merging education and fun-filled entertainment is something Brad Machett knows all about. What he calls “Agri-cadabraâ€? is exactly what it sounds like. His passion for agriculture and humor come together in his one of its kind show during which he creates a balloon sculpture and gives the audience a chance to take it home with them as long as they can :KHUH %HKLQG %OGJ tell him the average age of the farmer in their state. &RPPHUFLDO %XLOGLQJ Each show lasts about 10 to 15 minutes as Machett :KHQ 7XHVGD\ Âą 6XQGD\ educates his audience members about agriculture. He DQG S P entices the crowd by singing Old McDonald, using plenty of fun facts, transforming an audience member into a farmer, cooking with Houdini rabbit, and inflating a 6-foot balloon. Machett travels throughout the east with this interesting and educational show which delights people of all ages.

Buffalo and Barfield

If you’re looking for a good time while listening to some traditional country music, Buffalo and Barfield’s unique performance is just what you want to see. They have been visiting county fairs and regional music festivals all along the East Coast for more than 15 years. The husband and wife duo consists of Gregg “Buffalo Barfield and Michele Barfield. Both artists have their own exceptional talents that, when combined, are nothing :KHUH &DERRVH $UHD less than extraordinary. :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ Gregg plays the guitar, har DQG S P monica, mandolin, Cajun/Zydeco rub board and Cajun accordion, while his wife, a singer songwriter, plays rub board and piano. In the past they have opened shows for famous widely known country artists, including Charlie Daniels, Kenny Chesney, Doc and Richard Watson and Alabama. Performing country classics, bluegrass, old-time gospel, and rhythm and blues along with a comedic spin is exactly what Buffalo and Barfield do. You will find yourself dancing, singing, laughing and simply have a good time with this exceptional husband and wife duo.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Hot Dog Pig Races When someone asks if you would like to go to the track to watch a race, most people instantly think of cars, runners or horses. At the Washington County Fair the races are a little different. Hot dog pig racing is returning and continues to be one of the most popular attractions among all ages at the Washington County Fair. During the 20-minute show you will see the :KHUH %OXHELUG 5RDG Hollywood Hog All Star, the Royal Pigs :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ of Hamalot, the International Stunt S P Team and the Super Hot Dog Team race around a small oval track. These little awkward but cute, cuddly animals truly fascinate spectators. They really know how to capture everyone’s attention with their natural comedic talents as they bolt from the starting gate and race around the track snorting and squealing as their stub legs churn and curly tails sail along behind.

Sylvia & the Magic Trunk Every child has a vision of what they would like to become when they grow up. For some it’s a fireman, an astronaut or maybe even President of the United States. But for Sylvia Fletcher, who grew up in Los Angeles, her dream was to become a ventriloquist. Her dream was nurtured as a young child after watching famous ventriloquists Paul Winchell, Jeff :KHUH )URQW 3RUFK 6WDJH Dunham and Shari Lewis. :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ She did her part in researching DQG S P how to become a ventriloquist and now travels all over the world with her “Magic Trunk, which is filled with her cast of quick-witted puppets and other inanimate objects she brings to life. Fletcher enjoys dazzling audiences of all types, bringing her act to theaters, schools, parties, businesses and festivals where she shows off her wide range of characters, including “Chito the Mexican Opossum, “Shmoulder the Stega Dragon, “Amazing Steve the Genie and more.

Puddles the Clown Puddles the Clown will return to the Washington County Fair for the fifth consecutive year, offering children her delightful face-painting as usual, and will keep them amused with her brilliant :KHUH 3LFQLF 3DYLOLRQ antics. :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ The woman behind the colorfully painted S P face, pink hair, red nose, and lively outfit is none other than Debbie Bartolucci. Being that she is an Easton native, she has become very familiar with the Washington County Fair. Through her artistic face-painting skills she has turned girls into butterflies or princesses and boys into pirates. Other than visiting the fair each year, Bartolucci keeps herself busy with appearances at birthday parties, conventions and other local events.

FREE ENTERTAINMENT Extreme Illusions and Escapes An exciting show will be magically appearing at the Washington County Fairgrounds this year with a pair of high-energy illusionists/escape artists. Josh Knotts, otherwise known :KHUH %URDGZD\ as the “Houdini 1HDU &RPPXQLW\ /LYLQJ %OGJ of West Virginiaâ€? :KHQ 7XHVGD\ Âą 6XQGD\ and the “Elvis DQG S P P re s l e y of Magic,â€? graduated in 2004 with a bachelor of fine arts degree in Theatre from West Virginia University. Since then he has been able to see

the world through his career as an illusionist/escape artist. His sidekick, Lea Teyssier, also a graduate of West Virginia University, is a dancer, acrobat and escape artist. Together they have been bringing to the stage a highenergy mix of illusions, escapes, theatre, comedy and audience participation.

Bob Smith & Reindeer Cows, horses, pigs, fowl and reindeer. The Washington County Fair may seem like an unusual place to find a reindeer, but that’s exactly what you’ll find as :KHUH ))$ )DUPODQG :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6XQGD\ DOO GD\ Bob Smith and Reindeer return to the fairgrounds again this summer. Smith fell in love with reindeer 15 years ago and bought his own animals a year later. Ever since, he has shared the creature with the public at the Washington County Fair and other local events. Reindeer, which are similar to caribou, are part of the deer family and are most common in Arctic regions of Europe and Asia, and have been found in North America for the past century. Smith will bring two or three reindeer

to the fair this year, and you may even see him walking them on a leash. While they can be petted, he says they aren’t overly keen on being touched, so he doesn’t force them to accept the attention if they aren’t in the mood. His exhibit will feature photos of reindeer and plenty of informational material. And he is always happy to answer questions and talk about the reindeer, so be sure to stop and visit.

MUSIC Smokey Greene Band Smokey Greene has been heavily involved in music ever since he taught himself to play the tenor banjo back in 1944. Since returning from traveling with the Air Force, he has become a familiar face on the regional music scene.

:KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW :KHQ 0RQGD\ S P DQG S P Greene’s time in the Air Force had him traveling all over the country and the world for that matter. It is from his travels, especially time spent in California, that Greene became involved in performing bluegrass music. That passion for bluegrass music never left Greene and he brought it with him to upstate New York. In 1972, Smokey Greene conducted

the inaugural “Smokey Greene Bluegrass Festival in Corinth and the festival continued on as an annual success for more than a dozen years. The man known as “The Friendly Voice of Country Music in upstate New York is often credited with introducing the area to bluegrass music. Greene has been a staple at the Washington County Fair and has performed with well-known musicians, such as Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Tex Ritter. Greene has been performing for more than 60 years and is driven to keep doing so, because, as his slogan states, he strives to “keep country in country music. One way Greene has been keeping the country and bluegrass genres alive is by performing with younger musicians who are equally as passionate about the music.

The Elderly Brothers Yet again this year, the Elderly Brothers find themselves pinned as a weeklong attraction at the fairgrounds, performing every day except Monday. The four-man a cappella group will be performing six consecutive days, bringing fans a taste of 1940s and 50s barber shop style quartet singing. Rich Gervais supplies the tenor portion of the harmonies, Jay Van Vranken brings the lead, Larry Wilbur dishes out the bass and the baritone comes from Bob Whitney. All four members of the group are also members of the Saratoga-based Racing City Chorus, a musical organization consisting of more than 50 singers. The group has regular practices, performances and social events. All four of the “brothers have taken their a cappella talents abroad, as they have traveled around the world, performing their music. Although the group has been together for a number of years, they all started out performing in different groups, even though :KHUH )URQW 3RUFK 6WDJH they knew :KHQ 7XHVGD\ 6DWXUGD\ S P one another. One night 6XQGD\ S P they sung

together at a post-concert event and instantly meshed, and ever since that day the group’s musical connection has been evident. Whether you’re looking to take a trip down memory lane or you’re new to barbershop style music, the Elderly Brothers will surely have you humming along to such classic tunes as “Bye, Bye Love, “Dream, or “Don’t Break the Heart That Loves You.

MUSIC Thirsty Another new addition to this year’s musical festivities is the Salem-based band known as Thirsty. This band consists of three members, Chris Barrett on the drums, Rich Wirsing :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW playing the guitar :KHQ 7XHVGD\ S P and Pat Nolan supply DQG S P ing the bass; all three members have more than 25 years experience playing their respective instruments. Each member has experience playing in various other bands, such as Elvis impersonators at Lake George and a local Led Zeppelin tribute band. The band’s Facebook page describes them as a “loud, in-

your-face, dancing-in-yourpants, nonstopt i l l - yo u - d r o p, dance rock and dance country band. “We play rock and country but all with a dance beat, guitarist Rich Wirsing said, “music from the 50s through the present. The band finds its pride in getting its fans up and dancing to the beats of their various decades of music.

Adirondack Fiddlers The Adirondack Fiddlers will be returning to the Washington County Fair this year with their hearty style, which often inspires their audiences to get up and dance. The fiddling group has been playing as a unit since 1978, when they :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW :KHQ :HGQHVGD\ D P originally gathered for music and DQG S P friendship. Over the next 10 years the group flourished and in 1989 they became incorporated as a nonprofit organization. The group meets monthly and advocates the preservation of old-time fiddling and related dancing fields. The Adirondack Fiddlers perform at many events throughout the area and welcome members from the Capital District, Glens Falls, Washington County, Western Vermont and other locations throughout the area.

The organization has grown to 180 members, 20 of whom are fiddlers; four are youth fiddlers. Members range from under the age of 18 to as old as 80 and membership is open to anyone who wants to preserve fiddling, whether they play or not. Meetings are open to the public and are held from 12-5 p.m. on the second Sunday of the month, from September through June at the American Legion in Schuylerville.

Bobby Dick Bobby Dick is back at the fair again this year and will perform old hits with a modern twist. Dick and his wife Susan, also known as DJ Susie Q, have been performing at proms, weddings, fairs, birthdays, graduations and many other parties for near:KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW :KHQ :HGQHVGD\ S P ly five decades. In 2011 Dick left his DQG S P band, the Sundowners, to pursue his dream of performing solo. Although he has predominately been a local, smaller function entertainer, when he was with his band Dick was involved in some national shows. The band toured with Dion and the Belmonts in the early-1960s, and opened shows for the Rolling Stones, Dave Clark Five, Tina Turner, Jimi Hendrix and the Monkees. As a bass player and vocalist, Dick performs such a

wide array of different voices and genres that he sometimes jokes that he cannot remember what his actual voice sounds like. Everything from the 1950s up until the present is fair game for Dick, who covers old rock artists like Elvis to newer dance artists like Sugar Ray. While on stage, Bobby and Susie like to engage their fans with stage banter, comedy, parodies and general humor. Susie provides background music, harmonies and occasionally a lead or two to go with Bobby.

MUSIC The Hand Picked Band This South Glens Falls-based, three-person country and classic rock band will be returning to the fair. The current band is a modern incarnation of the original band, which started nearly 30 years ago. The present Hand Picked Band has been playing together for about four years now, performing new :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW and old country music, :KHQ 7KXUVGD\ S P as well as classic rock from the 1960s and 70s. Original members Tom Burke, who plays drums and sings, and Glenn Pratt, who plays guitar and sings, are joined by Jeff Durkee, the bassist and lead vocalist. The original band got its big break in 1986 when it won a

contest on country radio station WGNA a n d received a trip to Nashville to appear on the show “You Can Be a Star. The band now performs regularly throughout the area at local bars, American Legion Posts and anywhere else they can draw their fans.

Jeffrey Lee Williams New to the fair this year, this Schuylerville alum will be bringing his country music over the hill from Clarks Mills to the fairgrounds. Williams started singing around the Glens Falls, Saratoga and Lake George area :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW club scene 20 years :KHQ 6DWXUGD\ S P ago. He eventually DQG S P moved to the Music City, Nashville, Tenn., where he recorded two albums, the second of which was entirely his own music. In 2001 Williams even had one of his own songs out on the radio. During his time in Nashville, Williams made his way to performing at many of the famous clubs, including the Broken Spoke and Wild Horse Saloon. In 2006, Williams moved back to the area and has been busy singing with the Worship Team at Church and some private engagements as well. The opportunity to perform in public at the fair is something that Williams is truly looking forward to. Although he performs many different types of country music, he said that this performance will consist of mainly his favorite country hits from the 1980s and 90s.

Hair of the Dog One of the nation’s foremost Celtic folk and rock bands returns to the Washington County Fair for the second year. The members of Hair of the Dog are entering their 21st year together, after starting :KHUH (QWHUWDLQPHQW 7HQW as a three-man group in :KHQ 6XQGD\ S P 1993; the band has since DQG S P expanded to include five members. Hair of the Dog has released 10 albums, which have been wildly successful, and the band has even garnered some national attention from Billboard Magazine as one of Irish Music’s bestsellers. Perhaps the band’s most popular song, “One Sunday Morning, was featured on the “Songs of Irish Freedom: Vol. 3 compilation CD. In 2005, the band was featured on the “One Child at a Time charity compilation, which included the likes of James Taylor and U2. Some of the individual band members boast impressive resumes as well. Fiddler Larry Packer worked with a band produced by Jimi Hendrix, was a guest on the third episode of NBC’s ‘Saturday Night Live’ and his name appears on albums and playbills for famous artists such as Hall and Oates. Bassist and Vocalist Rick Bedrosian has recorded

with Stevie Ray Vaughn, multi-instrumentalist Eric Finn is a graduate of Boston’s famed Berklee School of Music and he’s a renowned musical arranger, guitarist/singer. Brian Gibney was the front man for many bands before joining Hair of the Dog and Drummer Joe Morizio actually majored in guitar but ultimately transitioned to percussion. The band has been voted the best band by the readers of Albany’s Times Union in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2013 and 2014.

DANCING TGIF Country Dancers and Tony’s Toesters TGIF Country Dancers and Tony’s Toesters is a collaborative line dancing performance featuring Tony Marcantonio and Virginia Allen, a member of the :KHUH -XGJLQJ $UHQD 7HQW Country Western :KHQ 6DWXUGD\ S P Dance Instructors. Marcantonio, founder of Tony’s Toesters, has been teaching line and country dance for 16 years. “It’s a great social outlet and a lot of fun. It has grown way beyond just country music. Now line dancing is done to all kinds of music, like Latin music. There are thousands of new

dances all the time; even ballroom, Marcantonio said. On Saturday, Aug. 23, at 5 p.m., Marcantonio, Allen and others will demonstrate and teach the various styles of line dancing. “We try to cover different things; it’s kind of a combination, Allen said, adding that Marcantonio is particularly adept at teaching younger dancers. “His classes have dancers from 10 years to 70 years, she said. Marcantonio teaches classes in Wilton and South Glens Falls. He says he enjoys witnessing the energy and enthusiasm displayed by beginner dancers when they learn a new move.

Country Western Dance Instructor’s Forum Fairgoers will have the opportunity to watch, and learn, how country dancers know when to turn, step, lean back and more during the Country Western Dance Instructor’s Forum on Sunday, Aug. 24. A handful of line dance instructors will display their talents and teach even teach fairgoers how to dance. “It’s a very easy dance to learn. It’s a combination of all other dance styles. You can teach a beginner a few moves in as little as 15 minutes, said Virginia Allen. Allen, who has been teaching dance for more than 50 years, has performed at the Washington County Fair for 25 years. “I enjoy it. It’s a lot of preparation but we have fun and it’s a good way to get line dancing out there. A lot of people don’t know what it is. The majority of the dancing will be done by the instructors and students, but in between there will be audience participa-

tion as well. Allen said the dancing is done primarily to country music, but other genres get mixed in on occasion. “It’s good exercise and it’s good for your brain, Allen said. Members of the Country Western :KHUH -XGJLQJ $UHQD 7HQW Dance Instructor’s :KHQ 6XQGD\ S P Fo r u m meet September to May on a monthly basis and have regular events such as an appreciation dance and a food drive.

Hill Country Cloggers

Positions currently available

The Hill Country Cloggers trace their history back to 1988, when eight people got together and decided to spread the joy of clogging. The history of the style goes back more than 150 years when European immigrants settled in the Appalachian Mountains and com:KHUH -XGJLQJ $UHQD 7HQW bined their dances and :KHQ 6XQGD\ S P music with those of other immigrants. Members of the group range in age from kindergarteners to those in their 90s. They perform all over the Capital region at nursing homes, other events and -- of course -fairs. Traditionally, cloggers danced to bluegrass music, and still do today. But they have added many other kinds of music including rock, pop, country western, oldies, Irish and more. They will perform Sunday at the fair and a dozen or so members will be present. The Hill Country Cloggers are always looking for new members. They start classes for beginners every September in Hoosick Falls and Brunswick. For more information about joining the group, visit www.hillcountrycloggers. org.

MAPLE GRADES

• Tapping does no permanent damage to the sugar maple tree. • Tapping sugar maple trees is a tradition in the Upper Hudson River Valley since the 18th Century. • The sugaring season lasts usually from late February to early April. • It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup. • Warm, sunny days and frosty nights are ideal for sap flow. • The harvest season ends with the coming of spring’s warm nights and the first stages of bud development on the trees. • New York is the second largest maple producing state in the nation.

4-H offers ‘lifelong learning’ Having the freedom to get involved however they’d like is exactly what the Washington County 4-H youths are able to do at the Washington County Fair. “The fair is an opportunity for youth to show their projects off,” said Chrys Nestle, a 4-H Educator for Washington County and the Youth Superintendent for the fair. Things youths bring along to showcase are animals, some sort of public presentation, baking, photography and more. If they don’t have anything of their own to display, youths can simply help out by volunteering at another vendor. The possibilities are endless. Nestle made it clear there is one display in particular that stands out from others. “Photography has played a really big role in the past,” she said, and it has only gotten bigger and more diverse. The youths take all different types of pictures including scenic, portrait, still life, animals or something else. Nestle credits the popularity of photography to the many technological advancements such as cell phones and digitally enhanced photography, especially with the new computer programs which allow photographs to be altered to one’s liking. Yet, no matter what they’re doing, there is always one objective in mind. “The main goal at 4-H is to develop lifelong learning,” Nestle said. To do so, the youths are held to certain expectations. The three categories 4-H works on are science, technology, engineering and mathematics; healthy liv-

ing; and citizenship and leadership. Nestle said 4-H helps develop a sense of belonging, independence, mastery and generosity. The goal is to enable 4-H’ers to be able to build on skills they have while learning to do things on their own, knowing there is always someone there to help if needed. Still, that is not all 4-H stresses. “ W e s t r o n g l y encourage community service,” Nestle said. Working on different aspects with the youths will ultimately make them rounded individuals, she said, adding that 4-H works as both a community club and enrichment program; it is not a formal education. “We are all about developing the youth,” Nestle

said. One of the main things stressed at the fair is that there isn’t a first, second or third place winner. Instead the youths are judged using the Danish system. This focuses on earning or accomplishing something. They are able to win red, white and blue ribbons after each showcase is compared to a standard, not to the o t h e r entries. Something new to look for while roaming around the fairgrounds is a class called Produced in New York, which Nestle herself will be running. A lot of great knowledge and experiences come out of 4-H and being involved in something where you can contribute in so many ways is truly something 4-H

works on. After speaking with Margaret Brownell, who is 18 now and has been involved in 4-H since she was about 5, one can see just how being involved in 4-H can open the door to other wonderful opportunities. This year she will be showcasing three Ayrshire heifers at the fair. But even more exciting, she won a trip to Colorado where she and another friend will be presenting in front of the Cattle Feeders Hall of Fame. They won this trip because of a blog they started called Advocates for Agriculture, to spread the word about how important agriculture is to the country and community. From her experience in 4-H for many years, Brownell said she has gained a lot of knowledge. “I’ve learned that everyone has a story and the best part is to tell you story,” she said. “I’ve learned to have a voice.”

Don’t miss the FFA Farmland

The Washington County FFA Farmland is a joint venture between FFA Chapters from Greenwich, Granville, Argyle, Salem, Schuylerville and Hartford. This year’s display will include a simulated Agricultural Education Classroom that includes actual work, textbooks and models from local agricultural education classrooms. The rest of the building will be filled with the popular chicks, ducks, calves, goats, emus, reindeer, a mother pig and her piglets as well as miniature horses with their skeletal systems and digestive systems

painted on their sides. FFA members and other volunteers are busy answering fair-goer questions as well as caring for the animals throughout the week. The National FFA is a national youth leadership organization for students enrolled in high school agricultural education courses.

ducers of fiber in New York State, but it is also one of the top producers nationwide. Whether you are looking to buy some new fleeces, learn how to spin yarn, buy some locally produced food or look at the different animals, while the kids get their faces

painted with Puddles the Clown; there is something for everybody, throughout the 125-acre fairground. The 2014 edition of the Fiber Festival features over 120 vendors from all over the Northeast, giving those in attendance the chance to see the versatility of many different fibers. Vendors will be selling food, fiber products and a variety of other goods and services. There will be many different demos and workshops related to not only fiber, but agriculture as a whole. Demos include dog herding, sheep shearing, duck herding and a few others. This year’s festival will also include a raffle with many different items donated by the different vendors, the proceeds of which will benefit the ‘adopt a soldier’ program. For the competitive fiber enthusiasts, the nine category photo contest is another popular event that takes place at Fiber Festival. The nine categories are, Fiber Animals Portrait; Fiber Animals with Person; Pastoral Photo; Fleece, Fiber or Yarn; Farm Animal at Work or Play; Barn/Barns; Silhouette; Farm or Domestic Animal with Fiber Animal; and Fiber Processing. Ribbons will be awarded to the top three photos in each category, with a champion and reserve champion also being picked. The farm museum located at the fairground will also be open during the festival, for those interested in learning a little more about the history agriculture in the region. Admission to the event is $5 for adults and free for anyone 13 or younger.

applying online through the station’s website, some of whom submitted You Tube videos of themselves singing. Each contestant has chosen a song they will perform and a panel of judges will evaluate their performance based on five attributes: singing ability, appearance, stage presence, audience participation and audience reaction. “Last year, the top five were incredible singers, said O’Neil. “A lot of them brought their own fans. Even though Froggy is a country music station competitors are not limited to country music for their song choices, although most tend to gravitate toward the genre. Last year’s contest had performers ranging in age from 18 years to seniors. It is an 18 and older competition. After the preliminary round, contestants will be whittled down to the top five, from which the three finalists will be chosen by a panel of judges. Whether you know a contestant or not, the karaoke contest is not to be missed.

Rodeo back for two days at fair Adding a second day of rodeo to the Washington County Fair last year proved to be a hit, so it’ll be repeated at this year’s fair. “It was phenomenal, said Shana Graham of Painted Pony Rodeo in Lake Luzerne, which presents the competition. “The crowds were great. The rodeos will be held at 7 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday nights. A Youth Rodeo will precede the main event at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. Contestants from throughout the country will compete in the rodeos, which are sanctioned by the P ro f e s s i o n a l Ro d e o Cowboys Association (PRCA). Graham said the inclusion of a second day attracted even more contestants.

“The contestants loved it, she said. “They can get two PRCA events in at the same place. Contestants will compete for thousands of dollars in prize money and a gold championship belt buckle in seven events: bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, team roping, tie-down roping, women’s barrel racing and bull riding, which tends to be a crowd favorite.

“That’s one of the main events for sure, and we save it for last, Graham said. “It’s a real crowd-pleaser and really adds to the excitement of the night. The rodeo will also include family-friendly specialty acts like a rodeo clown and trick riders. On Tuesday morning, a Women’s Professional Rodeo Association (WPRA) sanctioned barrel race will take place in the arena. And at 4 p.m., the “slack, or extra rodeo contestants, will take to the arena. Spectators are welcome at both events. But the action won’t be limited to just professionals. Youths will have their own show. “It’s much bigger and more exciting this year, and the kids are very excited to

be coming back, Graham said. The rodeo is open to children age eight and younger, and kids will participate in stick barrel racing, hula hoop roping, and the boot n’ shoe competition. Many of the kids who participate come from families who participate in the fair all week. Each child that participates will get a rodeo back tag, and a certificate of participation. A championship belt buckle will be given away to the best-dressed cowboy and cowgirl. “We are very excited to be part of the fair. It’s a very historic event and Painted Pony Rodeo is proud to be a part of it, Graham said. “Fans will see an outstanding and exciting show.

More than a Fair Every year thousands of people flock to the Washington County Fair to revel in the joy and entertainment of fair week. It’s estimated upward of 100,000 people filter through the turnstiles every August. But there’s a lot more happening at the fairgrounds than just the fair itself. While no other single event can boast of such large crowds, the fairgrounds remain a busy place throughout the year. For seven months of the year, from April through October, the fairgrounds play host to a variety of notable events. The Washington County Antique Fair and Flea Market spends two weekends a year at the fairgrounds— the first weekends in May and August—and features more than 200 vendors from throughout the United States and Canada. Dealers sell a variety of rare antiques, hard to find collectibles and a myriad of crafts. And because the show is traditionally held a week before the Brimfield, Mass., antique show, there are many items that appear for sale for the first time. The 2015 shows will be held the first weekend in May, and the first

weekend in August and feature vendors in both indoor and outdoor venues. Hours are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. There is also an “early buyer pass, which gives guests access to the show during setup on Friday. To learn more visit fairgroundshows.com. Another popular event held each year at the fairgrounds is the TriState Antique Tractor Club’s Show. The club, which is an affiliate of the national antique tractor association and has members in New York, Vermont and Massachusetts, is dedicated to the preservation and enjoyment of old farm machinery. The show features a large display of antique tractors, stone boat pulls, equipment demonstrations, a parade, an auction and children’s activities. For the past four years the fairgrounds have hosted the Southern Adirondack Fiber Festival, a two-day celebration featuring more than 120 vendors from throughout the Northeast. The weekend includes workshops, demonstrations, livestock

shows and much more. This year’s event will be held on Sept. 27 & 28. For more information, visit adkfiber.com. The local affiliate of the American Cancer Society has held its Bark for Life event at the fairgrounds for the past three years. This noncompetitive walk for dogs and their owners raises funds and awareness for the organization’s fight against cancer. The fairgrounds also host a number of smaller events by local groups and organizations. Horse, cow and rabbit shows, dog agility trials, livestock sales and other agricultural events are held there throughout the year. Local Scout groups and 4H clubs often hold events at the fairgrounds, and the Washington County Seniors held their annual picnic there last month. The grounds are also available for family reunions, wedding receptions, corporate events, fundraisers and other private events. To learn more about the events held at the fairgrounds or to inquire how you could hold your own event, visit washingtoncountyfair.com.

Monster trucks returning With the popularity of the Rammunition at last year’s fair, Hall Brothers Racing is returning this year with not only that monster truck, but also the six-time Truck of the Year, the Raminator. :KHUH 0HPRU\ /DQH There are trucks, and then :KHQ )ULGD\ 6XQGD\ there is the Raminator. The $OO 'D\ five-ton 2013 Ram Heavy Duty features a 565-cubic-inch Super-Charged Hemi engine that cranks out 2,000 horsepower and 66-inch tires. The truck is valued at more than $150,000. Hall Brothers Racing debuted the original Raminator in January 2002, and it was named Truck of the Year after winning four of seven Pro Monster Truck series races. Since that time, Tim and Mark Hall, owners of the Raminator, have added Rammunition, which wasted no time in establishing itself as one of the most feared opponents in monster truck racing. Fair hosts baking contest Baking contests sponsored by national companies are usually only held at major state fairs, but the Washington County Fair is one of the rare county fairs that can boast of a contest sponsored by the King Arthur Flour Company. The event was brought to the fair by Mike Bittel, the King Arthur Flour Senior Vice

President/General Manager who lives in Washington County, and who lobbied for a local version of the national baking competitions. Bittel will be one of the judges at this year’s event. This year, adult contestants will compete to make their favorite whole grain yeast bread.

Radon Causes Lung Cancer. You Should Test Your Home. Radon is an invisible radioactive gas that seeps into your home from underground. The only way to tell if your home has dangerous levels of radon is to test for it. Once detected, homes with high levels of radon can be easily fixed.
