Bennington Battle Day BENNINGTON It’s the biggest celebration of the year in Bennington, as the town recognizes its namesake state holiday, Bennington Battle Day. A full weekend of events celebrating the American victory at the Battle of Bennington during the Revolutionary War is planned, capped off by the Bennington Battle Day Parade on Sunday. The two and a half hour extravaganza features 15 marching band units, 14 floats, and 20 fire departments. “It’s the biggest event in Bennington by far,” said Chad Prentiss, assistant chief with the Bennington Fire Department, the organizer of the parade and many related events. With an estimated 12,000 people expected to attend, “there will be people everywhere,” he commented. At 4 p.m. on Friday, the firehouse hosts its annual Chicken Barbecue Dinner. Classic cars will be on display at the fire house from 6 to 8 p.m., and at 8:15 p.m., the cars will parade down Main Street. The Bennington Fire House will also host a Las Vegas Night from 6 to 10 p.m. on Friday. Saturday’s events open with a 5K race at the Bennington Monument. Registration takes place at 8 a.m., with the race starting at 9:30 a.m. to the sound of cannon fire. From 10 a.m. to noon, the Bennington Fire Department hosts “Kids’ Day” at the Recreation Center on Gage Street. At noon, area fire departments will compete in a series of Firematic Games at the firehouse. Traditional timed “muster” games such as “Midnight Alarm” and “Bucket Brigade” will challenge the teams. Between events, don’t miss the Living History Encampment that will be ongoing throughout the day, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the grounds of the Bennington Monument. The weekend wraps up on Sunday with the Bennington Battle Day Parade at 12:30 p.m. This is the 48th year that the Bennington Fire Department is presenting the parade, which steps off on Main Street in front of the old middle school. In addition to the 15 marching bands, there will also be local rock bands on floats, baton twirlers, country cloggers, clowns, the Shriners, and a featured appearance by the Aaron’s Monster Truck. The Battle of Bennington took place along the Walloomsac River on August 16, 1777, when Colonel Seth Warner and 350 Green Mountain Boys helped defeat the British forces that came to Bennington to capture an American supply depot. With the British unable to get their needed supplies, their forces were weakened. This battle is credited by many historians as the first victory for the United States in the Revolutionary War, and it set the stage for the Americans’ victory at Saratoga. The Bennington Monument now stands on the site of the supply depot.

Cohan’s many popular songs include “Over There,” “Give My Regards to Broadway” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Manhattan writer Chip Deffaa has captured Cohan’s essence, as he tells the story of an icon who started as a vaudeville song and dance man, then went on to Broadway where he became renowned not only as a
writer and composer, but also as a tough director and producer. Actor’s Equity was formed as a protest to Cohan’s rules and practices. Rupert Day RUPERT Rupert will be alive with activity on Saturday, August 13, as the town celebrates not only its traditional “Old Home Day,” but also the 250th anniversary of its founding. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rupert Congregational Church, a quilt show will showcase many quilts, some antique and heirloom, alongside some newer and unique ones. The Rupert Firemen will host a chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the firehouse, with toe-tapping music provided by the Adirondack Fiddlers. To honor the town’s 250th anniversary, the program will feature special speakers, the presentation of annual citizenship awards, and a short program of historical highlights. the Curbstone Chorus, a men’s barbershop harmony group from Rutland. At 3:30 p.m., the Wild Country Cloggers will dance in the firehouse. Throughout the day, special 250th anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase, including t-shirts designed by Scott Lenhardt, keepsake calendars, pencils and commemorative programs. In addition, there will be a one day only commemorative postal cancellation for sale, featuring a drawing by Rupert artist Donna Blomberg. Rupert’s parade will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. With a theme of “Rupert Then and Now,” the parade will have many floats, and five additional bands this year. Battle Commemoration NORTH HOOSICK Members of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Daughters of the A m e r i c a n Revolution will be on hand at the New York State Bennington Battlefield Historic Site in North Hoosick on Saturday, August 13 from noon to 5 p.m. to answer questions about the Battle of Bennington which took place there on August 16, 1777. There will also be a display of artwork and images depicting events of the American Revolution. Fought in the area of Walloomsac, New York, the Battle of Bennington helped to blunt British General Burgoyne’s plans to control the Albany, New York area. This battle site is well-preserved in the form of the New York State Bennington Battlefield Historic Site. It is open to the public every day from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Labor Day at no charge. On Tuesday, August 16 at 7 p.m., a formal commemoration ceremony will take place. The

18th Century Day SCHUYLERVILLE The 1777 Schuyler House on Route 4 in Schuylerville will be the setting for dozens of artisans demonstrating their crafts much as they did more than 200 years ago on Sunday, August 14 from noon to 5 p.m. at the 33rd annual 18th Century Day. Presented by the Old Saratoga Historical Association, the event includes free tours of the Schuyler House, music of the period, and Punch and Judy puppet shows. In addition, artisans will be demonstrating such 18th century crafts as tinsmithing, blacksmithing, broommaking, basket-making, ropemaking, beer brewing, spinning, dyeing, weaving, soap making, butter making and needlework. Throughout the day you’ll be able to see colonial farm life activities, and listen to discussions on farming methods, medicinal treatments and beekeeping. Free light refreshments will be available. It is suggested that visitors dress for hot weather, bring water, and wear insect repellant and sunscreen. The Old Saratoga Historical Association is a non-profit educational organization that provides furnishings for the Schuyler House and promotes interest in the history of Old Saratoga, Schuylerville, Victory and the Town of Saratoga, from Native American occupation through the present time.

Civil War Journal CAMBRIDGE The Cambridge Historical Society and Museum will celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the start of the Civil War on Wednesday, August 17 at 7 p.m. with a reading of journal entries and letters written by Lt. Cruickshank participated in many battles, including Chancellorsville, Virgina; Gettysburg, Pennsylvania; Atlanta, Georgia; Kennesaw, Georgia; and Bentonville, North Carolina. He was honorably discharged on April 11, 1865 at Washington, DC, and returned to his native Salem, New York, where he was an active member of the community despite complications from his service in the army. Cruickshank (born in 1836) died on September 13, 1902 after many years of debility. Several members of the museum will be dressed in period costumes for the reading.
