Spooky Benson beckons you You’d be wise to take extra caution if you’re traveling anywhere near Benson next weekend. Ghosts, ghouls, goblins and other eerie things that go bump in the night have an uncanny way of finding their way into the small community this time of year. Most of those creatures will be lurking in the shadows alongside Benson’s roadways during the annual Haunted Hayride, held this year from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 14 and 15. The Haunted Hayride is one of the Benson
Fire Department’s largest fundraising events and features a number of Halloween-inspired activities besides the hayride. “It’s the same spirit you get at the Family Day and Burdock Festival,” said Sue Janssen. “It’s a nice small town event and it’s for a great cause. People find a way to have fun regardless of their age. It’s just a lot of fun.” Janssen said the event remains relatively unchanged and fans of the hayride will find it to be a bone-chilling good time.
Von Trapp to play in Tinmouth Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of the legendary Maria and Baron von Trapp whose story inspired The Sound of Music will perform at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 22, as part of the the Old Firehouse Concert Series in Tinmouth. Singing professionally since childhood, Elisabeth has enthralled audiences from European cathedrals to Washington, D.C.’s Kennedy Center. Building on her famed family’s passion for music, Elisabeth has created her own artistic
style, at once ethereal and earthy, delicate and powerful. Critics have called her voice “hauntingly clear,” “joyfully expressive,” and “simply beautiful.” The Boston Globe noted that “before the concert is over she will have the crowd gasping with the sheer beauty of her voice.” Elisabeth’s repertoire ranges from Bach to Broadway, from Schubert to Sting. With equal ease and eloquence she sings timeless wonders like Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Favorite Things and Edelweiss, Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro, soaring gos-

This season’s sale will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 9, throughout the community of Poultney, although most sales will be concentrated on Main Street. The event will be held rain or shine. A number of citizens and vendors alike will set up shop selling a variety of goods ranging from household items to
GMC concert benefit for Slate Valley Green Mountain College's choir will combined with another group to put on an Oct. 15 concert concert to raise funds to help Slate Valley Museum recover damage caused by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene. At 7:30 p.m., Oct, 15, the college choir and “We Are The Men,” a 30-member male voice choir which performs songs in the Welsh tradition, will share the stage at Ackley Hall on the GMC campus. Benefit or children. Donations beyond the admission fee will gladly be accepted. Proceeds will go to the museum. The performance is part of the GMC Welsh Festival taking place that afternoon at the College’s Cerridwen Farm. The museum, built to commemorate an industry that
drew much of its labor force from Welsh immigrants, was badly damaged by flooding from Tropical Storm Irene and has been closed since. Now the Welsh music community from around New England is stepping up to hold a benefit concert for repairs to the museum. Under the direction of Professor James Cassarino, the GMC choir is the only American college choir that maintains a Welsh language repertory. In celebrating its Welsh heritage,

Fest The only real change of note is for the first time, advance tickets will be available for the wagon of your choice, and not just the first wagon of the evening. “Instead of standing in line you can do all these other wonderful things in town,” Janssen said. Advance tickets for the hayride are currently available for $10 and can be purchased by contacting Sue Janssen at 5373111. You can also buy tickets on the night you intend to take a hayride, but you won’t have the choice of which wagon you will ride. The cost of tickets is $7.50 and will go on sale each night at 6 p.m. Besides the hay ride, there will be craft vendors in the Community Hall, a Church tagsale, face painting and plenty of delectable food available from the Benson eighth grade class who are raising money for their annual trip to Washington D.C. “It’s like a two-day Halloween party for the entire town,” Janssen said.
the choir has toured Wales five times since 1998. “We Are The Men” takes its membership from some 17 towns on Cape Cod, from Sandwich, Mass. in the west, to North Chatham, Mass. in the east. Its director, Chris Roberts, is a native of Wrexham, North Wales. The Slate Valley Museum, located on Water Street in Granville, N.Y., is planning a grand re-opening for Oct.7.
information about Elisabeth von Trapp’s music, please visit www.elisabethvontrapp.com. On Friday, Nov. 4, House Blend, will be on stage at the firehouse at 7:30 p.m. The group, formed in 2006, is an assembly of 23 veteran singers from Vermont and New Hampshire, devoted to the collective exploration of the many styles of mostly a cappella songs from around the world and throughout musical history. A democratically-governed party of selfprofessed singing addicts, the “Blenders” look to the artistic direction of all of its members to guide the group, creating a harmonious brew that reflects their diverse musical backgrounds. Doors open at 7 p.m. and there is open seating. A $9 donation at the door. Refreshments will be available.
All those event aside, it’s the Haunted Hayride that people come to see (never mind that it’s the last thing some of them will ever see). Each evening features several hayrides, each of which is approximately one hour long. Parents with small children are encouraged to sit in the middle of the wagon away from the prying hands of devilish creatures and to ride the early wagons. “They (the hayrides) get scarier as the nights go on. The scarers get more creative,” Janssen said. “I’m pretty sure we got rid of that nasty swamp monster that ate some of the eighth graders last year.” Just in case patrons may want to make sure they hold onto their loved ones extra tight as they pass Beaver Meadow Pond, the site where the monster has most often been seen. Organizers are still accepting ghouls and goblins who would like to stage a scary scene along the wagon route. If you are one of the things that go bump in the night, Dave Bartholomew would love to hear from you. He can be reached at 537-3315. “Many of the scarers have done it for years,” Janssen said.
I’m always impressed with the creativity of the sites.” Wagons have tarp-roofs that keep out rain and life-sucking bats so the event is held rain or shine, biblical plague or clear night. Folks who line in Benson or are coming for the evening are asked to take care with the extra traffic in town. Benson fire chief Tom Neumann said the event more than doubles the population of the community during the event. The hayride will change traffic patterns and even close some roads in Benson from 6 p.m. to midnight during the event. Stage Road will be one way, north, from the intersection of Lake Road to Hulett Hill Road. Lake Road will be closed (except to residents) from the intersection of Stage Road to the intersection of Park Hill and Lake Road North. North Lake Road will be closed (except to residents)from Old North Lake Road to the intersection of North Lake Road and Lake Road. Anyone who would like to purchase advance tickets, or would like more information, is encouraged to call (802) 5373111.

Rutland hosts "Art in the Park" this weekend After a successful summer festival, The Chaffee Art Center will host their annual Fall Foliage Art in the Park Fine Art and Craft festival this weekend, Oct. 8 and 9 in the Main Street Park at the junction of Routes 4 and 7 in Rutland. The event, which is held twice a year in mid-summer and autumn, is the Chaffee Art Center’s major fundraising event and features art and crafts vendors from throughout the northeast. Anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 people attend the festivals each year. Event hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free but a voluntary donation at the entrance is appreciated. The fall festival is very similar to the summer show with the only notable difference being cooler temperatures and a focus by some vendor on fall inspired products. All types of handcrafted
items and fine art mediums will be represented at the festival. Patrons will discover a cross section of paintings, photographs and sculptures as well as a variety of crafts such as baskets, pottery, furniture, gourd birdhouses, ornaments, dried floral pieces, clothing, stained glass, jewelry, quilts, vases, lamps and much more. Several vendors will even provide hands-on demonstrations of jewelry making, spinning and knitting, and woodworking, among others. Many visitors come to the show with their eyes set on another season-winter. Patrons use the festival as an opportunity to purchase gifts for the upcoming holiday season. Some vendors will have wool hats and gloves for sale and there’s sure to be some hand crafted Christmas decorations. There will also be a bevy of food vendors serving everything from fries and burgers to
seasonal specialties such as donuts and turnovers. Sarah Wallis, a local musician, will provide the festival’s musical backdrop. This year’s show takes on special significance because it’s the festivals and the Chaffee Art Center’s 50th anniversary. Patrons will have opportunity to visit the center and view its newest exhibit (which goes on display Oct. 7), “Enduring Traditions: The Art of Memorials from Marble Valley.” To learn more, or to see a full list of vendors, visit www. chaffeeartcenter.org

St. David's Society makes donation to SVM Program on bats back at Fair Haven
Poultney Area St. David’s Society donated $300 to the Slate Valley Museum for assistance in recovery from Tropical Storm Irene. At their Oct. 1 Gathering of the Clans 23rd anniversary event held in Poultney, society members voted to make a monetary donation to the Granville NY museum. The society invites others to match or exceed the gift. The St. David’s Society donation was gladly received by museum trustee Reg Jones who extended sincere thanks to the Society on behalf of Slate Valley Museum. Jones explained many thousands of dollars of damage occurred at the museum because of flooding one month ago from Irene. Jones said continued assistance from the public will be sincerely appreciated as the museum works through the recovery challenges imposed upon them. Donations are tax deductible and can be mailed to: Slate Valley Museum, 17 Water Street, Granville, NY 12832. The Poultney Area St. David’s Society, Inc. was found-
ed in 1988 by Helen T. Jones and the late Eleanor (Evans) Williams McMorrow. It is a fellowship organization comprised of many descendants of Welsh immigrant families whose heritage comprises a sizeable portion of the heritage
of this Slate Valley’s history. Their heritages are primarily immigrant families from North Wales villages between the years 1840 to 1950. For more information, visit rootsweb. ancestry.com
Brought back by popular demand, Jerry Schneider will present a program about bats at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct.13. Using slide photographs and taped bat calls, Schneider will demonstrate the vital role of bats in nature as they help limit the pesky insect population, pollinate night blooming flowers and are instrumental in carrying seeds throughout their local habitats. He will also discuss the role bats play while hiding in attics, their migration and hibernation. Kids of all ages will especially enjoy the craft in which they put their favorite bat on a plain white t-shirt. Audience members may bring their own shirt or purchase one for $4. The world around us is amazing and former teacher Jerry Schneider will take everyone into the world of the bat and show what life is like for creatures who find hanging out upside down is a perfect way to view things.
There is no charge. All are invited. Story Hour Story hour begins at 10 a.m. Tuesdays for preschoolers.. Children will enjoy a story, a craft activity and a snack. There is nothing better than to spend a bit of the morning in a library with a child. Books club Book Club meets at 7 p.m. on the second Monday of the month. At the Oct. 10 meeting., the book to be discussed will be “The 13th Table” by Diane Fetterfield. November’s book is “Two Rivers” by T. Greenwood. This book happens to be set in Vermont as the author has family here. Please come and share your thoughts on the best in books. Guide will help prepare fall bounty As summer winds down – many home gardens are being put to bed … laying dormant until the sun heats up again next spring. This is not the case on most area farms. Even farms with an emphasis on vegetables are still going full tilt. Aside from the bounty of tomatoes, peppers, and more… many late season crops are just arriving. Raspberries, garlic and onions are bountiful. Squash, brussel sprouts and potatoes are just arriving. New lettuce and spinach is fresh and ready for harvest. And, in a trend that has become more
popular in recent years as winter farmers markets have opened… some crops are being planted under cover or in structures such as hoop houses and green houses for harvesting throughout the winter months. In this issue you will find the 2011 Locally Grown Guide – a publication of the Rutland Area Farm and Food Link (RAFFL). Use the enclosed Locally Grown Guide to take advantage of the end of summer bounty, the best of the fall and winter harvest, and a whole variety of local products that are not as seasonally-dependent.
It is always a good time to incorporate local meat, honey, maple syrup, cheese, wine, jams, and more into your food choices. In this guide you’ll find local farms raising meat products (beef, rabbit, pork, chicken, lamb, turkey, and more) and a wide variety of crops many people may not realize are being grown locally (popcorn, beans, grains, mushrooms). And, of course… this is the perfect time to find a pickyour-own berry or apple spot to take in some delicious fruit!

Poultney Church plans stained-glass celebration The Poultney Methodist Church is planning to celebrate the completed restoration of their stained glass windows at a special celebration and consecration church service at 10 a.m., Oct. 16. There will be a pot luck luncheon after the service. We invite everyone to attend the service as well as the luncheon. The windows are approximately 100 years old and time had taken their toll on them. The windows had cracks running between each colored piece of glass and parts of the window were protruding. Old Plexiglas installed many years ago had become clouded making it difficult to see the beauty of the windows. Over the past year and half the windows have all been removed, re-leaded, and reinstalled. Guy Savio, owner of All in Glass Studio Too from Glens Falls, is the man behind the restoration process for this project. Guy and his crew have worked many hours painstakingly removing the windows, repairing them, and reinstalling them. The molding has also been repaired as needed and given a fresh coat of paint. As well as restoring the windows the old Plexiglas has been
removed and a thermal glass window has been installed to protect the windows from the outside as well as providing better insulation from the weather on the inside. This should make a difference in the heating and comfort of the sanctuary. The congregation also believed that they needed to take care of the windows because they were a gift from the people who worshipped their close to a 100 years ago. All but one of the windows was given in memory or honor of people from that time or before. For example, one window was given in honor of the Civil War Veterans. The windows have a historical value as well as being appreciated for their incredible beauty. The church is in the middle of their 3 year capital campaign to finance this project. We are halfway through that 3 year time frame. Donations have exceeded $75,000 so far and when we are done our goal is to raise $150,000. Anyone interested in making a donation may send it to : Poultney United Methodist Church, 108 Main

Get tangled up in the “Spider’s Web” The Dorset Players kick off their 84th season of quality community theater with “Spider’s Web”. The play, written by Agatha Christie in 1954, is unique because of its humor. Best known for her crime stories, Christie wrote this piece as a “comedy thriller”. ing room, she begs her three houseguests to get rid of it before her husband comes home. Meanwhile, a police inspector shows up to snoop around after receiving an anonymous tip that a murder has been committed at that address. The search is on for the murderer, the motive, and the body. Solar expert to speak at GMC
Showing off her work
Internationally acclaimed author, entrepreneur and energy expert Steven Strong will be at Green Mountain College on Thursday, Oct. 13 to present a talk titled “Renewable Energy: Building the Bridge to the PostPetroleum World” in a program sponsored by GMC and renewable energy non-profit Energize Vermont. The presentation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Gorge in Withey Hall. Strong began his energy career as an engineer on the Alaska pipeline in the 70’s. He quickly became convinced there were less-costly and more environmentally desirable ways to provide comfort and convenience to consumers than the costly extraction of fossil fuels. In the pioneering days of solar electric technologies, Strong helped build the first solar-powered neighborhood using photovoltaics (PV) in Massachusetts back in 1984. These PV panels generate electrical power by converting
solar radiation into direct current electricity. Strong began his own company called Solar Design Associates, and installed the first solar panels on the White House during the Carter administration. As his expertise and reputation grew, Time magazine named Strong an Environmental Hero for the Planet in 1999. Drawing on his background in architecture and engineering, he has devoted most of his life to the engineering and integration of renewable energy systems. His projects include the world’s first fully solar private residence, the first solarpowered U.S. Embassy (in Geneva), and the first solar powered Olympic facilities (the Atlanta games of 1996). “Even back in the solar-crazy ‘70s, it was an open question if anyone could survive trying to sell houses that produce all the power they need through renewable energy sources,” said Strong, in an 2007 inter-
view with Time. Strong visits the College at a time when GMC is moving ahead with several renewable energy initiatives. In 2006, GMC began buying 50% of its electricity from Central Vermont Public Service’s Cow Power program. Cow Power delivers energy from burning biogas created from cow manure collected on Vermont dairy farms. In the spring of 2009, students under the direction of faculty and GMC alumni working in the renewable energy field installed solar thermal panels on the roof of the barn on the College farm. The solar array heats water for the College farm to clean vegetable produce and the equipment used in its small-scale dairy operation. The College is also experimenting with a solar-powered root zone heating system in high-tunnel greenhouses, a method of extending the growing season in cold climate regions.
