Winter is slowly and inevitably coming to an end in the Lakes Region and the last fishing derby of the season will be held this weekend on Lake St. Catherine. The Poultney Fish and "I think mom Game Club will sponsor the 28th Annual Frosty and dad like to Derby on Sunday, March 6. see the kids The popular fishing tournament is typically catch a fish and the last derby of the season in the Lakes Region, win a trophy" and for many anglers the Q Rocky Saltis, last opportunity to enjoy a Poultny Fish and little ice fishing before Game Club interests shift elsewhere, or the weather causes the inevitable retreat of ice surfaces. Being the last derby of the season has its perils though. There have been several occasions in the past where warmer weather created some less than ideal conditions, such as last year when at least one angler plunged through the ice. Organizers, however, don’t expect any situations like that this year. In fact, they report that ice conditions are in great shape.

Pie Continued from front page done it,” Middletown librarian Kimberly Mathewson said. The group was just looking for something fun to do as the winter hangs on a spring has not quite arrived, Mathewson said. “We do it at a time when people are starved for pie and connecting with neighbors and friends; we do it at this time because almost everybody is sick of the cold,” she said. The fun will take place right at the library on West Street right near the middle of town. Extra parking for the event is available at St. Anne’s Catholic Church next door. “We just kind of push all the book cases back and make the library look like a café,” she said. If past results are any indication, there are plenty of people in the area who want to have a little fun and have some pie for breakfast. “When we did it the first time we had no idea what would happen, but the response was overwhelming. People were saying ‘you should do this again

next week’ and we said no, but we’ll do it again next year,” Mathewson said. Pies run the gamut from sweet to savory, with everything from quiche, spinach and ham to the decadent pecans, apples and pumpkins, Mathewson said. Guests don’t need to worry about making the hard choices; they received help there as the slices of pie are cut thinly intentionally to allow for additional sampling. “And then somebody usually brings some whipped cream so we can really do it up right,” she said. The cost includes just what every good pie needs, coffee, tea or juice. “Try them all, or as many as you can,” Mathewson said. For those unsure, that means: All You Can Eat. Anyone considering adding a pie to the festivities can call Jenny at 235-1390; she the ‘pie baker collector’ for this operation, Mathewson said. All proceeds from the event go to the Middletown Springs Public Library. For more information contact the library at 802-235-2435 or kbm@vermontel.net.

Women's Business expo coming to Fair Haven Business which are owned and operated by women and want to exhibit at the Scrapbook Day and Women’s Business Expo, Saturday, March 19, at Fair Haven Grade School, should contact organizers by March 11. The event will run from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and will include 12 hours of crop time, breakfast lunch and dinner, raffle tickets and a goodie-bag. Separate admission to the Expo is also available. To showcase your business call Lea Pettis at 802 265-8348 or lapettis@hotmail.com.

Frosty Continued from front page “It looks like the ice is going to be plenty safe. It’s good and solid and I’d say there’s a good 11-12 inches of ice out there,” Rocky Saltis said last week. Because the derby is one of the last of the season, and the weather tends to be slightly warmer, the event has become somewhat of a family affair. “There’s good fishing but it’s all about the family atmosphere,” Saltis said. “There seems to be more families at this derby than others.” Saltis said he believes families flock to the frosty because it’s affordable-the entry fee is only $10-and there’s easy access to the lake. “We just try to push the things for the kids,” Saltis said. “We keep the prices down and try to get more people to take part in this derby.” Over the past several years organizers have begun to award trophies to the top kid’s finish-

Mania Continued from front page 6 p.m. and the event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets for the show are available in advance by calling 645-9009. They cost $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets are also available at the door but have been known to sell out in the past. “It’s primarily singing and we’ve got some dancing and other routines. There are several returning acts and some new acts,” explained Rod Hawkins, the show’s organizer. “We have some really good talent this year.” Although the event showcases the talent of local entertainers, it’s not your typical talent show where a panel of judges determines a winner. “I determined a long time ago that it wasn’t a competition. What I want to do is give the community an opportunity to see the talent that’s in the region.” The show comes together over a span of approximately two months. Hawkins held auditions for prospective performers the first week of February. He said the auditions are very much like American Idol; the entertainers are given several minutes to perform their routine and then Hawkins critiques each performance and lets them know whether or not they made it. “I’m not as mean as Simon

ers, something that has proved very popular among younger anglers. “I think mom and dad like to see the kids catch a fish and win a trophy,” Saltis said. The weather is also a big draw. It’s common to see anglers in ball caps and sweatshirts opposed to knit hats and winter coats. “The weather’s nicer and people are more likely to come out,” Saltis said. Saltis said last year’s derby drew about 300 people, down a little from the average of 400. “We’re hoping it will pick up this year,” he said. The derby remains headquartered at the Lake St. Catherine State Park and fishing is likewise restricted to that body of water. Anglers will compete for prizes in one of four categories: trout, perch, bass and pike. Prizes are awarded in cash and no angler is permitted to take home more than one prize per category. Saltis said organizers will likely get to derby headquarters around 6 a.m. on Sunday morn-

ing and tickets can be purchased there the day of the event. All fish must be to the weighing station by 4 p.m. Tickets are also available in advance of the derby at any of the local bait shops including Cone’s Point, Tom’s Bait, Ed’s Bait and the East Poultney Store. To keep the derby moving and get everyone home before dark, organizers ask that all fish be to the board at the park by 4 p.m. The presentation of awards will follow around 4:30 p.m. Raffle tickets will be available at derby headquarters throughout the day and organizers often make a few rounds with ATV’s to sell tickets to anglers as they fish. Saltis also said food and refreshments will be available for purchase at derby headquarters. Anyone who would like more information is encouraged to call Saltis at 287-9742, or Sunny Panoushek at 287-2274.

Cowell but I have turned away acts who weren’t polished enough,” Hawkins said. “Fortunately, no one was turned away this year, which is kind of nice. We have some really good performers this year.” After the auditions, Hawkins doesn’t see most of the performers until one of two rehearsals in the days leading up to the show. He says he leaves it up to them to make sure they practice and are prepared for the show. “It really is up to them and how bad they want it. They audition, practice, rehearse and then they’re off,” Hawkins explained. During the rehearsals, Hawkins spends a good deal of time choreographing the performances. “I tell them where to go and what to do. I try to make it so they are actually entertaining and not just performing.” Despite carefully choosing his performers, Hawkins said the show is open to all comers, regardless of age or where they are from. “We’ve had everything from third graders to people in their 50’s,” Hawkins said. “The radius is fairly large that we draw from, which is good. I have performers from Whitehall, Hudson Falls, Rutland, Lake Bomoseen and Shaftsbury.” The performers aren’t the only attraction. In what has become a Mettawee Mania Tradition, the current Miss Vermont, Caroline Bright, will serve as the event’s emcee.

Bright is a 20 year old senior at St. Michael’s College in Colchester and a graduate of Missisquoi Valley Union High School in Swanton. According to Hawkins, this won’t be Bright’s first time on the Mettawee Mania stage. She served as the event’s emcee several years ago when Miss Vermont couldn’t attend. “She did a whale of a job then and I’m looking forward to working with her again. She keeps things rolling by doing her thing,” Hawkins said. The show also benefits from an experienced staff that ensures everything runs smoothly on and behind the stage. “We have a really good crew that takes care of everything back stage, from the lights to the sound. They have all been here since day one and they know the drill,” Hawkins said. Hawkins said he has 21 performers lined up for this years show and all the acts are back to back “so its rolling all the time and people don’t have a chance to get bored.” Besides the outstanding singing and dancing the audience has come to expect at Mettawee Mania, Hawkins says he has some new acts. “Some of our new acts include a band from the Long Trail School, a group of belly dancers from Shaftsbury and a trio who does yo-yo tricks which is something we’ve never had before. Hawkins said each performer is given a maximum of five minutes on stage and the show typically lasts two hours. Proceeds from the event benefit the Mettawee Community School Parent Teacher Organization. He said most of the proceeds are used to help offset the price of yearbooks which are given to sixth graders for free and sold to younger students at a reduced prize. Despite benefiting the show, Hawkins was quick to point out that the event is not a school function. Instead it’s a community event held at the school. “It’s a good opportunity to see something different. People really seem to enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun,” Hawkins said.

Wells Constable wins at Greater Benson Derby By Derek Liebig A day off from work resulted in a big pay day for one local angler. Local resident and Wells Constable Gary Stomski took a day off from fighting crime and patrolling the streets of Wells to get in a little fishing Sunday afternoon and when the day was over he went home several hundred dollars richer. Stomski was fishing in an undisclosed location north of the damn on Lake St. Catherine when he pulled an 8.26-pound brown trout through the ice. The fish was large enough to earn Stomski the top prize in the “other trout category at the Greater Benson Derby. The fish netted Stomski $600 in Gary Stomski with prize money and he took home award-winning catch. another $250 for having one of the

winning raffle tickets at the annual fishing tournament. “It was a nice fish. I thought he’d place but I didn’t think it would win. There were several fish that were all close, Stomski said. Stomski attributed the catch more to luck than skill. “A lot of it is just luck, sometimes they bite and sometimes they don’t, he said. Stomski declined to reveal the exact location where he caught the fish, wanting to keep the spot a secret for this weekend’s Frosty Derby. He also wanted to ensure everyone in Wells that he does have a fishing license. his “Even the constable gets to have a little fun, he said.

Ash Wednesday Service times Services for Ash Wednesday, March 9th, will be offered at 7:00 am and 7:00 pm at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wells. Both services will be celebrations of the Holy Eucharist with the imposition of ashes. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the season of Lent, the period when many Christians prepare for the coming of Easter by renewing their faith and their commitment to care for others. On Tuesday, March 8th, the congregation will gather in the Parish House beside the Church

at 5:30 pm for a pancake supper, one of the traditional ways that Christians observe the beginning of the Lenten season. People of all faith traditions are invited to the pancake supper and to either of the services on Ash Wednesday. The Church is located on the village green at East Wells Road.

Middletown Springs Maple Festival next Sunday By Derek Liebig The evolution and history of the maple sugaring process will be the focus of the 23rd Annual Middletown Springs Maple Festival. The festival, which is sponsored by the Middletown Springs Historical Society, will be held on the Green and in the historical society building from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, March 13. The event will feature demonstrations of early maple sugaring processes, discussion of the evolution of maple sugaring, raffles, a silent auction, and of course, plenty of maple flavored treats. “Because the event is sponsored by the historical society, the focus is on the

Wright said the festival will also feature nearly 50 raffle prizes including cash prizes and maple products and organizers have planned a silent auction featuring an 1869 map of Middletown Springs and gift certificate worth $250 to be used toward the purchase heating fuel. Other attractions include a number of maple-inspired vendors, children’s activities, acoustic music, and of course, food. “There will be a wonderful array of maple foods and dessert made by historical society members, Wright said. Proceeds from the event benefit the historical society. “It should be lots of fun, Wright said.

history of maple sugaring, explained society member David Wright. Their used to be a time when maple sugar producers painstakingly hung buckets from trees by hand and would spend hours collecting the sap and hauling it back to the sugar house. Today, most maple producers collect sap through a network of plastic tubes and a process called reverse osmosis. Those subjects and more will be at the heart of a discussion by veteran sugarmakers, Truman Young from Tinmouth, and Wilson Clark of Pawlet. The discussion will be held in the auditorium of the historical society. “Truman Young is very engaging and has lots of experience with maple sugaring that dates back in the 1930’s

It was there that he and his buddies would converse and joke with both the workers and the steady flow of customers all in a fun setting and in good jest. There are a lot of people who are going to miss you down there. God bless you, Don (Duck) West. Twig Canfield

In memory of Darlene Wade Back in the mid 1960’s I worked at Telescope Furniture in Granville, NY. I was there for a short time and that is where I met Hampton New York’s Wade Brothers, Al and Francis. Now there was a long period of time where I would meet with Al and his wife Darlene almost everywhere I went. Two things that can put you in a distant world are: rearing children and taking ownership of a restaurant/bar. At the time I had contracted diabetes and I was the one of the outside looking in. planned thus far are an appearance of Daniel Webster, portrayed by Jim Cooke and sponsored by the Pawlett Historical Society, also a Ghost Walk and open houses at the old schools, again sponsored by the Historical Society, a display of photographs and other treasures folks may have pertaining to Pawlet or other celebrations we have held in town, a big parade with the theme “Pawlet Through the Decades, a Barbeque prepared by Mark & Margaret of The Barn Restaurant, a street dance with round and square dancing to the music of Honky Tonk Express –all topped off by a fireworks display. We hope each organization in town will be involved in the parade as well as family floats, old time machinery and vehicles, animals—you name it. Perhaps folks who attended the Pawlet village school and West Pawlet school might like to consider getting their classmates or schoolmates together for a reunion or a float.

On August 26, 2011 the Town of Pawlet will be 250 years old. Club 2011 has been meeting for nearly two years to plan ways to celebrate this milestone. Pawlet has changed considerably since its charter was granted on that date in 1761. This current milestone is almost a revival as many people are still migrating north to become residents of Pawlet as they did in its beginning. Many of the current family’s roots go back to some of the original settlers and many go back to those who have come since. Either way, Pawlet is Our Town and we hope to make it a day to remember always. Plans to date are for the celebration to begin on Friday evening, August 26, 2011 with a performance by the Pawlet Players, a group who wrote and performed plays each summer during the 1980’s. Many of the original performers have moved away, but are returning to perform once again. Saturday, the 27th will be the “Big Day. Some of the activities

This has become quite a tradition here at Poultney Elementary School including guest readers from the community, and daily reading challenges which include spirit shown by wearing various attire. The week will be culminated our Celebration of Learning to be led on Friday, March 4th at 1:45 p.m. with the Sneetch Beach Dance party to follow that evening at 6:30 p.m. We hope that you can join us! In honor of Dr. Seuss’s birthday, there will be a VIP Luncheon on Wednesday, March 2nd. All are welcome and we hope to see you there! We were very proud to host Congressman Welch on Wednesday, as he had a tour of our school and visited the fifth and sixth grade classrooms to learn more about the Community Broadband Initiative and the partnership with e-VT and Digital Wish. The Congressman was impressed by our school and the learning he saw within our classrooms through the use of technology and we thank him for taking time out of his busy schedule to visit! Congratulations to the students, faculty and staff for recognition recently received from

the VT Department of Education for being one of fourteen schools in the State for their efforts in closing the achievement gap in the areas of reading and mathematics as measured by the New England Common Assessment Program (NECAP). We realize that we still have a ways to go, but know that we are on the right track and are proud of our students and the hard work being done over the past few years, as we keep kids and instruction as our focus. We will be holding a Parent Night for parents and guardians of students in grades five and six. This will be held on Monday, March 7th from 5:30-6:30 p.m. In order for children to begin to bring their netbooks home, a parent/guardian will need to be in attendance and sign necessary paperwork. This will also be a time to pick up a printer for your family to utilize for the remainder of the school year. There will be an Early Release Day on March 16th and no school on March 17th for students as teachers and staff will be working on professional development. It is hard to believe that we will be welcoming in the new month of March next week; let’s hope it comes in like a lion so it goes out like a lamb!!! Have a wonderful weekend and thank you for all that you do! Kristen Caliguiri

VPT cooks up local Sugarhouse favorites Saturday It’s time for the sweetest TV show of the year. Chef Sean Buchanan will return to Vermont Public Television’s studio kitchen to host VPT’s annual celebration of maple. “VPT Cooks: Sugarhouse Favorites will air live on Saturday, March 5, from 2 to 4 p.m. and will re-air on Saturday,

March 12, at noon; Sunday, March 13, at 3 p.m.; and Tuesday, March 15, at 7 p.m. It will also air on VPT’s Create channel Wednesday, March 9, at 7 p.m. Buchanan will host the program and cook with Vermont sugarmakers who will make simple recipes that have been family favorites for generations. Some of the sugarmakers

scheduled to appear and the recipes they plan to cook include: George Cook of Morrisville, Maple-Sugared Nuts; Richard Green of Green’s Sugarhouse in Poultney, Maple Raisin Cinnamon Buns; Maurice “Moe Rheaume of Rheaume and Family Sugarhouse in Middlebury, Maple Cream; Eileen Trudell

and Virginia Howrigan of E. Fairfield, Maple Rhubarb Pie; The Vermont Maple Festival’s King, Robbie Morrill of Milton, and Queen, Ruth Chippinelli of Georgia, Maple Oatmeal Pie; and Emma and Lucy Marvin of Butternut Mountain Farm in Johnson, Maple Pork Medallions

A booklet of recipes demonstrated in the show and others from local cooks will be offered as a thank you gift for contributions made during the program, which is part of VPT’s spring fundraising campaign. The producer of “VPT Cooks: Sugarhouse Favorites is Neil Hilt.

Scouts working on special project Boy Scout Troop 13 of Poultney/Castleton would like to let the community know about a special project they are working on. Each Memorial Day, volunteers from the American Legion Post 39 visit the local cemetery and place small flags on the graves of those who served in our armed forces. These flags honor our service members who have passed on and remind the rest of us of the tremendous sacrifice these courageous men and women have made for our country. The scouts of Troop 13 were stunned and appalled to learn that many of the small bronze flag holders that marked each service member's grave and held the flags have been stolen.

It will cost Post 39 approximately $1800 to $2000 to replace the sixty flag holders that were taken. Boy Scout troop 13 will be holding several fundraisers to help the American Legion with some of the cost of the replacements. Scouts will be selling Zap-A-Snacks frozen pizza and snacks, as well as doing other fundraisers for this project in the future. One hundred percent of the profits from these fundraisers will be donated to the Legion for this effort. If you would like to order Zap-ASnacks, or would like to make a contribution, you can contact any scout from Troop 13, or call Lori Spaulding at 802-468-5245 or Wanda Stiles at 802-287-2057.
