Happy 100th birthday Beatrice Howes! Beatrice Howes has seen a lot during her lifetime. Howes, who was born in Hubbardton, lived in Brandon and owned a business in Poultney and Fair Haven, turned 100 years old on Wednesday, March 30. She was born in 1911. At the time William Taft was president of the United States, Ronald Reagan and Tennessee Williams were born, Roald Amundsen became the first man to reach the South Pole and 146 people died in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, the deadliest industrial disaster

in the history of New York City. In an email, Angela Woodbury, told how her great grandmother can still remember when a trolley used to run from Main Street in Hydeville to Rutland. The cost to make the trip: 10 cents. Woodbury said Howes raised five children, one of whom succumbed to cancer at the age of eleven. After her children had grown, Howes went to beauty school and became a licensed

Fonteyn, Rutland County State Senators Bill Carris and Peg Flory, Rotary club members, local business owners, several students from the college and an assortment of other citizens. During his opening comments, he joked with the governor about the confusion people from outside the area have regarding the difference between Putney -- Shumlin’s hometown -- and Poultney. Later he handed the floor over to Poultney School Board Chairwoman Mary Jo Teetor who thanked the Rotary Club for the generous support over the years. She said the dinner has rose over $15,000 for the local school district since it debuted in 2005. Those funds have allowed school officials to integrate more technology into the classroom and helped create a more modern science lab. “Our kids are taking off on

it,” she said. Following the opening remarks, attendees enjoyed casual conversation as they were served a three course dinner, highlighted by filet mignon topped with lobster served beside baby potatoes and asparagus. Once the meal was consumed, it was Shumlin’s turn to address the crowd. During his address, which lasted about 25 minutes, Shumlin detailed his vision for Vermont over the coming years. He told attendees that it wasn’t the job of government to create jobs. Instead it was their responsibility to make the infrastructural changes that will allow the economy to grow. He proposed making those changes in three areas: cell phone access, health care and education. Shumlin held up a cell phone and said the one thing he continues to hear from Vermont residents and small business owners is that they need improved cell phone access.

Although he didn’t get into specifics, he pledged that “by 2013 we are going to connect Vermont.” He also said that we have to “get the health care thing right.” “The challenge isn’t quality care or access. Our problem is cost,” he said. “We are paying more and more for less coverage.” The last area he discussed was education. He proposed giving rewards and incentives for math, science and engineering, explaining those were the areas that were lacking under the current system. Although he offered few specifics on how he was going to accomplish those goals, his words were well received none the less. At the end of his speech he was presented a gift basket from Mathewson and a standing ovation from those in attendance.

Members of the Poultney Rotary Club gather with Governor Shumlin after his speech.

Bear workshop benefits Family Day By Derek Liebig A Traveling Bear Building Workshop is coming to Benson. The Benson Family Days Committee will sponsor a Traveling Bear Building Workshop from 1 to 4 p.m., Saturday, April 9, at the Benson Community Hall. During the workshop, children and parents alike will be able to purchase an animal of their choosing which they will be able to stuff and accessorize. The cost of each kit is $20 and includes a snack and beverage. Proceeds from the event will benefit Benson Family Day. Event spokesperson Jen Whitehurst said participants will choose an animal kit and then stuff that animal. They

will then receive a birth certificate commemorating the animals “birth,” and a star for the animal which they can then make a wish upon. “It’s a lot of fun,” she said. Despite its name, the event is inclusive of all animals, not just bears. Participants can choose from more than 20 different animals, including giraffes, dogs, cats and horses. After creating your animal, you will have the chance to purchase outfits and purchase accessories for your new friend. According to Whitehurst, the kits don’t require any sewing. You put the stuffing in and close up the animal via a Velcro-like closing. Last year’s event attracted more than 30 participants rang-

ing in age from two to 80 years old. Everyone who attended last year’s event will have an opportunity to celebrate their animals’ first birthday at 1 p.m. with refreshments and a special gift for the animals. The event will also include door prizes and an egg hunt for kids. Although pre-registration is not required, everyone who registers in advance will receive an extra gift. Organizers are hoping to surpass the $600 they raised last year. For more information, or to register, call Shirley at 537-2002, Jen at 353-7044, or Gina at 5372063.

Local woman collecting stuffed animals for seniors By Derek Liebig One local organization is hoping to bring a little joy into the lives of senior citizens. The Fair Haven Union High School Community Service Club is holding a stuffed animal drive to collect new and likenew stuffed animals for residents of nursing homes in Canon City, Colorado. The animals will be sent to Stacey Mae, a registered therapy dog who passes them out in the nursing homes. Animals can be dropped off in collection bins at the Fair Haven Union High School and at the College of St. Joseph’s in Rutland. They will be accepting donations of animals through April 30. The woman behind the local

effort is Angela Woodbury. Woodbury said she has a friend who spearheads the effort in Colorado and was looking for a way to help out. “We are going to collect the stuffed animals and send them out,” she said Monday afternoon. The project began in 2009 when Woodbury’s friend, Maria Mandel began collecting stuffed animals to pass out in hospitals around the holidays. In an email, Mandel said she and her dog Stacey Mae were walking down the hallway of a hospital when the encountered an elderly man and offered him a bear. As they gave it to him, he said “I am going to cry, this was very nice. Merry Christmas.” Afterwards Mandel said the

nurse pulled them aside and told her the man never speaks to anyone. She said that’s when she realized how powerful one little stuffed animal could be. The initial effort proved to be so successful and rewarding that the project has grown in scope to include a summer drive as well Woodbury said her goal is to collect at least 100 animals. Anyone who is interested in donating a stuffed animal(s) can drop them off in the collection bins or contact Woodbury at 468-5298. Donations to help pay for shipping costs will be accepted as well. To learn more about the project, visit www.teddybearprojectm. blogspot.com.

F.H.G.S NEWS Primary chorus takes to stage The spring primary chorus concert took place on March 22nd. The students in EEE through grade 2 did a wonderful job entertaining the crowd. The primary choral students are under the direction of Mrs. Kulhowvick. The FHGS Jazz Band performed several selections. The Jazz Band is under the direction of Mr. David Etzler. Cooking For Life FHGS is once again offering Cooking for Life classes for students in grade 5-8. Students meet weekly to prepare a nutritious meal. The students then take home the recipe and ingredients so they can share their cooking talents with their families. Mrs. Clement and Mrs. Surething coordinate. Potatoes in spotlight Potatoes were the focus of several classrooms during St. Patrick’s Day this year. Fourth graders in Ms. Griffin’s class used potatoes as part of their unit in measurement. Difth graders in Mrs. Norton’s class have been learning about the potato famine in Ireland. As part of their culminating activity, students cooked up some potato dishes to share with their classmates.

Two students attend conference in Tennessee Two eighth graders, Sam White and Vincent Kendall, traveled with a group of 25 members of United Methodist Church to the Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky to participate in the Red Bird Mission Conference. Rev. David Adams said that the conference started in 1921, and “We extend ourselves on faith to help those in need.” Most of the group repaired the roof of a house. Kendall worked on the roof of a front porch called a stoop, and White renovated a bathroom. “It felt really good to help people,” said White, “and it was great exploring Kentucky.” Kendall said, “I felt the same, and we rode down in style in a limo!” Adams said, “One of the scheduled vans broke down, so

Homefinders Guide

P.H.S. NEWS we were given a limo.” Both students learned a great deal about teamwork and the harshness of true poverty. “You should really be grateful,” said White. “People there need, and all we do is want, want, want.” Remember each day is a gift, that is why they call it the present. In order to attend the conference, each participant had to contribute $600, which many did not have. The group worked together through fundraising, which included a bake sale, a raffle with items donated from the community, a grant in the
