A group of scientists, researchers and environmentalists is spearheading a new study that will examine local rattlesnake populations. Over the next two years, representatives from The Orianne Society, The Nature Conservancy, the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department and the Vermont Reptile and Amphibian Atlas will be studying the behavior and movements of Timber Rattlesnakes in western Rutland County. It’s hoped that the information gleamed from the study will provide scientists with a better idea of how to best ensure the continued survival of local rattlesnake populations for the foreseeable future. “We want to track snakes over the next two years to get a better idea of the extent of the local population and the corridors in which they travel, explained Kiley Briggs, a scientist

involved with the study who will be doing most of the field work. Although researchers have a good idea on the location of denning sites, they have yet to identify critical habitat the snakes use to meet their needs during the summer season or their travel corridors. To meet these objectives, researchers will track snakes using radio telemetry. “We’ll be implanting the snakes with radio transmitters, said Briggs who will be charged with the unenviable task (depending on your perspective) of inserting the device. “The transmitters broadcast a signal similar to the technology in a car radio, but at a lower frequency," he added. He compared the transmitters to microchips that can be implanted in dogs. After the transmitters are in place, researchers will be able to track the movement of snakes across the landscape. The microchips will also allow scientists to identify individual snakes. Part of the equation is to also determine solid population estimates. Briggs said people have told him the local population can range from 300 to 1000 snakes, but admits they have no idea of the actual number. The study is tentatively scheduled to begin later this month as snakes wake from their winter hibernation and become more active. Anyone who sees snakes, especially in Castleton or Hubbardton where sightings are rare, are encouraged to call the Nature Conservancy of the Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife. Rattlesnakes have a yellowish-brown segmented rattle at the end of a black tail and a diamond shaped, solid yellow or black tail. Timber Rattlesnakes are native to Vermont and favor dry oak hardwoods and rocky hillside. The western Rutland County population is considered to be a genetically significant population because they are located at the northern end of the species range. Rattlesnakes once existed in all 13 original colonies but have disappeared from Rhode Island and Maine and are threatened with extinction in New Hampshire. They are an endangered species in Vermont.

He is the son of Julias and Moira Lendway and will graduate fifth in his class at Fair Haven Union High School. He plans to attend college in the fall and will study environmental studies as well as continue his football career Two-year Castleton State football captain Phil Hall, who was honored at this same banquet as a high school player for U-32, returns as a college inductee. He started 18 straight games on the offensive line, which is every game in Castleton State football history. He was also

Spring means it's time to get busy Spring is always a busy time. Field trips are starting to take place as the warmer weather allows for travel. Spirit Week was held recently and was our way of celebrating the terrific effort our students put into the fall NECAP exams. Students and faculty came dressed as twins, wore silly socks, and took part in other fun activities. Events included EEE students getting their new RIF books, a Cooking for Life family dinner, and students participating in community service by bringing in pull tabs to support the Shriner hospitals. Long before women went into the general work force, women did work in the shirt and press factories in the small towns and cities in our areas. Well, just like the shirt factories, we are all only here for a short period of time. Now at the store she and her
sister were good, loyal customers. They were short and deliberate and now and then a short blurt on the world outside the front door. May God bless you, Pat Williams. My thought on you forever – “Always a kind word. Twig Canfield

She has to be as she is in the habit of preparing large portioned meals three times a day. And she has in store those very special hand me down recipes from years gone by. When she lived in Poultney,
she was in the store a lot. She moved to Middlebury a few years back and I didn’t get a chance to see her. Vermont Gov. Peter Shumlin greets guests earlier this year.
Green Mountain students to hear Gov. Shumlin at commencement Young, NY Times Wicker to receive honorary degrees from school Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin will deliver the commencement address at Green Mountain College’s 174th graduation ceremony May 14, and receive an honorary doctor of laws degree. The ceremony is at 10 a.m. on the College’s Griswold Library lawn. Gov. Shumlin is the 81st governor of Vermont. His career in public service began in Putney, Vt. almost 30 years ago when he was elected to serve on the town’s selectboard at the age of 24. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and has worked for many years in his family business, Putney Student Travel in Putney, Vt. Today, Putney Student Travel has nearly 20 full-time employees, with another 200 working around the globe during the summer months. In 1983, Shumlin was appoint-
ed to fill an empty seat in the Ver mont House of Representatives by Governor Madeleine Kunin. After three years in the House he ran for one of Windham County’s two Senate seats. He was elected in 1992, and would represent Windham County for the next ten years. During his second term he was elected Democratic leader, and in 1997 his colleagues chose him to serve as president pro-tempore, the chamber’s top leadership post. The aollege will also present an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree to Robert H. Young and renowned writer and reporter Thomas G. Wicker. Young has served as President and Chief Executive Officer of Central Vermont Public Service Corporation (CVPS) since 1995. During that period, he launched a cultural and environmental transforma-
tion of the company that has led to wide national recognition for efficiency, transparency and creativity. Young will also be the speaker at the hooding ceremony for GMC master’s degree graduates at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 13. Thomas Wicker has been a dedicated reporter and incisive observer of the American scene for the past 60 years, helping millions of readers interpret the McCarthy era, the struggle for civil rights, Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society, the Vietnam conflict, and Watergate. He joined the New York Times in 1960, where he covered the White House, Congress, and national politics. His award-winning book A Time to Die: The Attica Prison Revolt provides a riveting account of the Attica Correctional Facility revolt in 1971.
Local food-law expert will speak May 5 Bob St. Peter, one of the organizers behind Sedgewick, Maine's effort to declare sovereignty against federal food laws, will be in Vermont to discuss the Local Food & Community Self-Governance Ordinance present the inspiring story of Sedgwick Maine on Thursday, May 5 at 7:30 pm in the East Room at Green Mountain College. The event is free for all, and sponsored by Rutland Area Farm & Food Link, Rural Vermont, and Green Mountain College. The Local Food & Community Self-Governance Ordinance was unanimously adopted by the folks of Sedgwick in early March, and has since captured international attention. The ordinance was crafted as a way for towns to determine their food and farm policy locally and through direct democracy. The Ordinance recognizes and values small, diverse farms and cottage food processors, and celebrates local traditions built around sharing food. The efforts of this small Maine town are inspiring a movement that will likely culminate here in

Come out on May 5th to hear Sedgwick Maine’s story and see how it can be applied here at home. St. Peter is the Executive Director of Food for Maine’s Future and serves on the boards of the National Family Farm Coalition and Family Farm Defenders, and is active with La Via Campesina North America. He sees the recently passed Local Food & Community SelfGovernance Ordinance as a model for economic development in rural areas. “It’s tough making a go of it in rural America, said St.Peter. “Rural
working people have always had to do a little of this and a little of that to make ends meet. But up until the last couple generations, we didn’t need a special license or new facility each time we wanted to sell something to our neighbors. Small farmers and producers have been getting squeezed out in the name of food safety, yet it’s the industrial food that is causing food borne illness, not us‌ And every food dollar that leaves our community is one more dollar we don’t have to pay for our rural schools or to provide decent care for our elders, adds St. Peter.
GMC has announced that it plans to offer a masters degree in sustainable food systems (MSFS). The college is seeking accreditation for the program this year in advance of its launch in January, 2012. The new major builds on the surging interest in food and agriculture issues in the U.S. and abroad, and the success of the college’s undergraduate major in sustainable agriculture. “There is an ever-increasing need for graduate-level education in today’s work force and we are positioned to meet the demand in areas of particular academic strength at Green Mountain, said GMC President Paul Fonteyn. “The major is a natural outgrowth of our emphasis on the environmental liberal arts and the success of our undergraduate programs in food systems. Currently more than thirty
students focus their academic work on food systems. Four grants over the past three years totaling over $250,000 have significantly enhanced facilities and faculty research capacity at GMC. Students will conduct indepth interdisciplinary investigations into the complex arena of their own bioregional food systems. Such study will be enhanced and broadened through in-class comparisons offered by students from different bioregions in the U.S. and a guided exploration of the national and international food systems. “Agriculture is an essential component not only of our economy but also of our lifesupport systems, said Philip Ackerman-Leist, director of the GMC Farm and Food Project and associate professor of environmental studies.

Southern Vermont's first marathon set for May 15 Southern Vermont’s first full marathon is just a few weeks away, and runners are registering from all across the country for the race that celebrates the settlement and chartering of
much of Bennington County 250 years ago. Organizers expect more than 300 runners to participate in the 26.2-mile race on Sunday, May 15. Sponsored by Southwestern
Vermont Health Care and the Vermont Country Store, the race begins at the Bennington Center for the Arts and ends at Hildene Meadows in Manchester.
The course is beautiful, crossing one covered bridge and traversing back road stretches in early spring through Shaftsbury, Arlington, and Manchester. Runners will also pass through the centers of North Bennington and Arlington. “Technically, the course is not too demanding, race director David Durfee noted. “People are worried about having to run up steep mountains when they hear ‘Vermont’, but the altitude gain is only about 500 feet, which puts the Shires Marathon in the same class as many urban courses known to runners for being fast.
An event of this size requires many volunteers to work as road marshals at intersections and help with parking and other duties. Volunteers get an event t-shirt and a front row seat for all the action. Potential volunteers can call 802-442-5491 ext. x 313. The Shires of Vermont Marathon is being organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners, a local club that organizes road races throughout the year in southwestern Vermont and neighboring New York state. Proceeds will benefit programs for children and families at United Counseling Service.
