Palmer, Director of Fisheries, the use of felt soled waders in the state of Vermont is now illegal. The ban which became effective on April 1, 2011, was enacted by the Vermont legislature in an effort to curb the spread of invasive species in Vermont rivers. Vermont is the second state, after Maryland, to impose a ban on felt soled waders. Experts believe that felt soled waders can contribute to the spread of invasive species such as whirling disease in fish and didymo, a non-native alga com-

ing, the payoffs can be great. “Vermont has excellent fishing opportunities for wild trout and some of the biggest brown trout are caught during early spring in many rivers throughout the state.” Unlike New York whose stocking efforts have already been delayed, Palmer said Vermont remains right on schedule. 2011 will see the continuation of the Vermont trophy fish stocking program. The number of two year old trophy fish stocked in Vermont waters is expected to approach 15,000 statewide. Nearly 900 are expected to be introduced in Otter Creek in the Danby/Mt. Tabor region

monly referred to as “rock snot.” Unlike lead sinkers, the possession of the wader is not illegal but there use is. Palmer said anglers have a number of alternatives, including rubber waders and cleats. Anglers who are caught using felt soled waders are likely to receive a warning as officials work to educate the public of the new law, but get caught a second time and you face the risk of being fined. Everyone is also encouraged to clean all their gear. “It’s important to note that simply making the switch from felt to a rubber-soled boots does not absolve an angler from having to clean their gear,” Vermont Fish

and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry said. Anglers are encouraged to take the “Clean Angling Pledge.” The tree components are: inspect, clean and dry. Palmer also wanted to remind anglers that the movement of bait fish from one body of water to another is illegal. He also said the transport of fish in water is also illegal. If you catch a fish during the appropriate season, it is fine to bring it home, but it is illegal to bring fish home in a container full of water. and another 1,085 will be stocked in East Creek in Rutland. The stocking in both those waters is expected to happen on April 25 and May 16. Elsewhere in the area, 4,000 brown trout are scheduled to be stocked in Lake Bomoseen; 4,500 brown trout and 1,000 rainbow trout are expected to be introduced in Lake St. Catherine; 300 brook trout in the Castleton river in Fair Haven; and another 600 rainbow trout in Black Pond in Hubbardton. Palmer said stocking efforts typically focus on lakes and ponds first and brooks and streams after runoff slows. As an added bonus, Vermont’s catch and release bass fishing season coincides with the opening of the trout season for those who prefer

bass fishing to that of trout fishing. Only lures and flies may be used, and bass must be immediately released. Palmer encourages everyone who goes fishing to use some extra caution early in the season. He suggests fishing with a buddy, avoid wading in water above the knees if you are unsure of your footing, and encourages anglers to wear appropriate clothing. A fishing license is required for anyone older than 15 years old. Licenses cost $22 for adult residents and $8 for residents 15-17 years of age. For more information, including a complete list of rules and regulations, and the full stocking schedule, visit www.vtfishandwildlife.com.

The curtain was designed for the stage in the West Pawlet School. When the school closed, it was eventually stored in the town hall. Later, through the offices of the Pawlett Historical Society’s then-president, Mike Brautigam, the curtain came into the possession of the Historical Society and was stored in the North Pawlet School, along with the Society’s other artifacts. Through a happenstance meeting between Pawlet’s Phyllis Mason and Chris Hadsel of the Vermont Painted Theater Curtain Project (now Curtains Without Borders, Inc.), Chris became aware of the Pawlet Curtain and added it to her list of “to do” curtains. During the summer of 2010, with assistance from members of the Society under the direction of Chris, the curtain was cleaned and readied for restorative painting by conservator Suki Fredericks. PAWLET - Between 1880 and 1940 it was common to utilize a so called theater curtain to hang in front of a stage setting before and after performances, during scene or act changes, and during intermissions. The Town of Pawlet’s curtain is an example of so called “Grange Hall Curtains”, one with a central romantic scene with painted on red draperies on the sides dominated by local advertising blocks. The curtains were intended to keep audiences occupied after they took their seats and prior to the performance. On Thursday, April 14 at 7:30 PM the Pawlett Historical Society will host a program, “The Past as Present”, on Pawlet’s recently restored theater curtain. The presenter, Chris Hadsel, is the Director of Curtains Without Borders, Inc. The evening’s program will focus on the Pawlet Curtain’s own restoration against the background of the restoration of a total of some one hundred and fifty Vermont theater curtains. is free and open to the public and will be held at the Pawlet Public Library. ing that often flips me back to another time period. It was a time when people were more devout and into religion. It was a time when the man was the breadwinner and most women stayed home to tend to their families. And yes, it was a time when old aunts and widows prayed to St. Christopher for

those who were traveling, St. Jude for this, St. Stephen for that. I mean they had a saint for everything. Coletta was right in the middle of all this. Music has a large part in any religion. It can draw people together. It is another way to get the message to the communicants. Good music

(Gregorian chants) can be so soothing to the mind. It is your time, Coletta Durick, you have made it. May God bless you. Go find those golden gates. When you’ve lived more than a half century your mind becomes this great collage of memories. If you’re a writer,

your hometown becomes this great play and your friends can remind you of the actors and actresses in that play. Joe Durick was always my Fred MacMurray and his wife Coletta was a Claudette Colbert of another era. God bless. Twig Canfield

Bill Barsalow was up early in the morn preparing the goods and his wife Charlotte ran the bakery during the daytime hours. Stewart’s Ice Cream came to the bakery and they put in a counter where you could “make your own sundae.” It was very popular as kids from all over flocked in. The ice cream came in these little tiny 2”x3” packages. Unfold the package onto a plate and put the toppings right to it – nuts, cherries, marshmallow, strawberries, chocolate and more. About 1959, my buddies and I missed a free ride on a helicop-

ter at the Fair Haven playground. It was sponsored by Stewart’s Ice Cream as a promotion. But my buddies and I were way too “cool” to ride on it with a bunch of little kids. She and her husband were the perfect combination for that business. Bill was a mild mannered guy who was born into the early morning bakery business. And Charlotte ran a tight ship and demanded respect. Thanks for bringing “The Perky Pack” to Fair Haven. May God be with you, Charlotte Barsalow. Twig Canfield

Kaci Jo O'Rourke competing for place in World Standings FAIR HAVEN UNION HIGH SCHOOL Principal’s Newsletter March 28, 2011 Last week’s exciting and tense boys’ basketball championship at Barre Auditorium concluded an amazing run by our Slater boys’ team. I will have Mr. Ramey report next week on that, and other extracurricular news from the winter season. Student News - Kaci Jo O’Rourke prepared her horse, Smart-looking Juice, a male Quarter horse, this weekend for an important equestrian competition. This weekend’s show is in New Jersey. Kaci Jo is competing in the NRHA (http://www.nrha.com/) and looking for

a place in the World Standings. My conversation with Kaci Jo was both interesting and enlightening, as it is always energetic to see passion-based learning in our students. “…[the competitions] are really tiring”, Kaci Jo informed me. Early this year, in Columbus, Ohio, Kaci Jo placed 4th in the All-American Quarter Horse Show. The competition had over 20,000 total entries with over 400 in her class. “There are a lot of people there and it is very, very nerve-racking”. I thought it was a big deal…this year I am hoping to do better and place in the top 2.” Her mom, Linda Balestra, supports her by assisting with training and traveling with her. Does she think all this effort is worth it? “Yes, I have gained a lot of experience along with learning about determination, leadership and teamwork. There are a lot of scholarships out there and some colleges have already taken notice. People do not realize the scholarship potential that is out there. It has helped

my people skills also.” And all that travel? “It makes you a better person, I think with understanding others and meeting experts”. Her dad, Harry O’Rourke, also has inspired her with his insistence on being outside, showing open enjoyment for his work and supporting Kaci Jo’s efforts. For a nice piece of camera work and editing from senior Sierra Newton that is currently on YouTube that she created for a project on Camera Shots for Individual Videography with Ms. DeCarolis and Mr. Connelly, check out this web link: http://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=QrcQSMOLScU VMEA Large Ensemble Festival On Tuesday, March 29th, the FHUHS Band will be taking part in the VMEA Large Ensemble Festival. This is an opportunity for the band to listen to other high school bands in the state and perform for other professional musicians and get critiqued and receive feedback from them. The following students

will be performing: Abigail Rampone, Dana Wiktorski, Alex Carabello, Amanda Clement, Sarah Czarnecki, Jenna Ray, Michael Wayne, Shelby Mackey, Bridget Silva, Susan Gay, Katherine Rampone, Sarah Hoenes, Garry Brown, Crimson O’Reilly, Cassie Papandrea, Keith Severance, Kirsten Capron, Maria Burt, Dylan Schulte, Gabe Goodhue, Ben Horton, Brandon Vaughn, Lindsay Price, Jen Genier, Shania Brown, Sam Hoenes, Grace Kuehne, Celina Bronson, Jeff Bruce, Emily Turgeon, Aaron Cassidy, Ashford Goodhue, and Matt Gay. Faculty News - Kim Ransom, Jess DeCarolis, Sherri Prouty, and Beth Carini will be spending the week of April vacation at Paris Island, SC, on a Marine Corps Educational Tour. During this week, they will learn and experience what it is like to be a new recruit and to be a Marine. They will be learning about the Corps’ history, shooting M-16’s, running the obstacle course, and much more. Semper fi!
