Seeking or selling, Saturday, May 14 is bargain day in Granville as lawns across the town and village bloom with yard sale treasures and great deals. Furnishing a new apartment? Are you looking to clear out your basement and make a little space to actually get that car in the garage? Are you looking for something to fill that empty space in the living room? Either way the town-wide yard sale represents the perfect opportunity to shake hands with free market capitalism and sell, sell, sell or buy, buy, buy. Sponsored by the Granville Area Chamber of Commerce and the Granville Rotary Club, the event always has something for everyone. Town residents who choose to can come into the village and set up in Veterans

Park without cost. This central location is driven by many times during the day and is close to all of the sales of the side streets. The rain date is Sunday May 15. Denise Davies of the chamber said the map will return again this year. The map will have the location of sales throughout Granville, provided the sellers signed up with the chamber before the deadline. Those holding yard sales out in the town may pick up copies of the map to pass out at their yard sales throughout the town; copies will be available the day before the sale, Friday, May 13. Davies said the map will be printed on two sides of paper and will include a map of village streets and one showing the town streets. The map will be available at the chamber building at the corner of Main and

Start your engines! Devil's Bowl opens up

By Bill Toscano

After a year of major change, Devil’s Bowl Speedway opens this Sunday for a season that promises even more change. Last year was the first that the half-mile track in West Haven, Vt., was paved after 44 years as a dirt track. This year, for the first time in more than 30 years, the track will run as a NASCAR-certified facility. That means drivers will be able to run in national point races, and since Devil’s Bowl is the only NASCAR track in Vermont, the winners in the NASCAR-sanctioned divisions will be state champions. In addition, the track’s premier division, the Modifieds, will be running “crate” motors, meaning that all cars will have identical, sealed motors in them.

All of the track’s divisions will be running in Sunday’s 45 season opener. The pit gate opens at 10 a.m., with practice from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.. The main gate opens at 1 p.m. and racing begins at 2 p.m. This will be the first time on the bowl track for many drivers, because Saturday’s open practice session was rained out. Many of the track’s drivers also run at AlbanySaratoga Speedway, so they have gotten some racing in. Besides the NASCAR Modifieds, the track will also run the Pro Late Models, the Renegades and the Bomber Warriors. All are NASCAR divisions. Other types of cars will run in special races during the season. Grandstand admission for regular shows is $10 for adults, $9 for those 62 and older

and $3 for children ages five to 12. Those under five are free. All children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The entire facility is “family friendly” with no smoking or alcohol use on the

Conservation district meeting Monday Deer, bear, bobcat and moose – they all live in our backyards, but what do we know about their habitat and how can we protect that for the future? The Poultney Mettowee Conservation District is hosting a public meeting on Monday, May 16 to share information from a recent assessment of wildlife habitat in the upper areas of the Poultney River, including parts of Wells, Ira, Middletown Springs and East Poultney. With the help of Dr. Kathy Doyle of Middletown, an

evaluation was done of key habitat areas such as wetlands, forests and stream buffers to help us work with landowners who might want to voluntarily implement conservation practices that can improve and protect these important wildlife areas. Landowner assistance is available from local, state and federal programs to help landowners who wish to improve habitat, install buffers or protect wildlife corridors. The meeting will begin at

Grant seeds community garden By Derek Liebig The Middletown Springs School and Community Garden is a little bigger this year thanks to some newly acquired grant money. The garden, which is a joint effort between students at the school and members of the community, was recently awarded a $1,000 grant, and as a requirement of the grant, organizers have expanded the size and scope of this year’s garden. The 640 square foot garden is more than eight times its size last year. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders secured nearly $40,000 in grant monies for Vermont through the federal governments Farms to School grant. Those monies were then split into 40 $1,000 grants and Middletown Springs was chosen as one the recipients for that money. Besides having to expand its size, the grant requires the garden make use of organic agricultural practices and 75 percent of the crops grown have to be edible. “The plan is to grow food for nutritious school meals and for

community members,” said Rosemary Moser, a certified Vermont master gardener and a member of the school’s nutrition committee. This summer will mark the fourth year the school and the community have jointly worked together to produce a garden. The garden began as a small pumpkin patch in its first year, helping raise money as a school fundraiser and has since grown to include more fruits and vegetables. Moser said they have already planted strawberries, lettuce and kale, and plan to put in peas next week. They also will plant a variety of other vegetables . Many of those crops are planted in raised beds, the construction of which will be the focus of a Groundbreaking Celebration at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 14. Moser said students and community volunteers will “get the beds built and filled with soil,” so everything is ready for planting. The school recently installed an outdoor faucet so volunteers won’t have to travel as far carry-

ing buckets of water and Moser has seen increased interest from students. “Some like to do it all the time,” she said. “I’ve seen more kids in the garden club. The group has gotten bigger.” Moser said the garden has been a good learning tool for students. She said they appreciate and value food more after their involvement with the garden and are more willing to try different foods because they helped grow them. “I think it’s important to be connected to where your food comes from, instead of from the cooler at the store,” she said. “It also gives the kids a sense of accomplishment.” Moser has also seen more involvement from the community. She said a local builder constructed several wooden raised beds and credited Elizabeth Cooper with securing the grant money. “I’m very appreciative of her stepping up and helping with this,” she said. “The community has been wonderfully supportive whenever I’ve needed something.”

Professor Andre Fleche, a Civil War scholar, and history students (now graduates) Brianna Gagne and Jake Richards transcribed the document, which can be difficult to decipher and interpret. Library staff created web pages from the transcriptions and scanned the actual pages, so that visitors to the site can view the original roster. The Castleton roster can be found on the college library’s website at http://www.castleton.edu/library/civil_war_roster

dinners and baking experiments aside, Helen can name over 100 favorite home-cooked dishes. When her mother was not at the restaurant, much cooking and entertaining was done in the Chen home. Helen Chen’s work combines a devotion to authentic Chinese cuisine with a knack for ingenuity. Her goal is to make Asian cooking more accessible and convenient to all. She also believes, whenever possible, in making it healthier by lowering fat content and using hearthealthy cooking oils while still keeping the taste authentic and pure. She travels regularly to the Far East to develop new recipes and products while visiting family there. Following this event, Helen will be available for questions and to sign her books; Easy Asian Noodles, and Easy Chinese Stir Fries. The menu will include Beef and Broccoli in Oyster Sauce, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Shanghai Golden Fried Rice, and Minute Sweet and Sour Cucumber Salad Helen Chen, who is the daughter of Joyce Chen, discovered a love for Chinese cooking at a very young age. She grew up in a culinary wonderland, spending much time at her family’s Chinese restaurant in Boston, learning everything she could about Chinese cooking. At 11 years old Helen began working at the restaurant. It was a family business and everyone pitched in. Her first job there was to pack take-out orders. During this time she also helped out at home. While her mother was busy cooking at the restaurant, Helen often took care of dinner for herself and her two younger brothers. The Chen children made many a meal of delivery food from Chicken Delight (a local fried chicken place) and Tower of Pizza . They also enjoyed frozen TV dinners (Salisbury Steak was Helen.s favorite.)

For the rest of us, driving through the mud is an unpleasant and messy experience. In fact, it’s something to be avoided at all costs. On the other hand, there’s a small group of dedicated “mud boggers out there, and this weekend, many of them will be at the Mettowee Mud Boggers Club on Route 12 hoping they will be caught on video. “Trucks Gone Wild, a production company that travels all over the world filming bigtruck events and making DVDs will be at the local club from Friday through Sunday, with the biggest events taking place

Saturday, “This is going to be big, said Claire Jameson, one of the owners of the facility. “The kids go nuts for this. Jameson said this is the first time the DVD production company has filmed in New York. The events will include mud pits that are more than 10 feet deep, and jumps of five to eight feet. There will be a lot of mud and a variety of other obstacles as well. This is the second major public event of the year. The first was “Spring Fling, which Jameson said was very wellattended.

Playing in the mud is fun for families and their trucks. The club has facilities for all types of vehicles, including ATVs and dirt motorcycles. There will be vendors at the event, as well as helicopter rides by North Country Heliflight and balloon rides from Sunkess Ballooning, Gates open at 9 a.m., and tickets are available there. A

two-day pass for a vehicles taking part in the event and their driver is $50, and a three-day pass is $80. Passengers and spectators are $10 each. Camping and RV spaces are available. For more information, call 642-2180.

The nation’s largest annual food drive to “Stamp Out Hunger will be conducted Saturday, May 14. On that day, letter carriers will collect nonperishable donations from homes as they deliver mail along their routes. The annual National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Food Drive — held in conjunction with the Postal Service — is the largest one-day food drive in the nation. The effort will help feed families in all 50 states. “With the commitment and

dedication of thousands of letter carriers, rural letter carriers, and postal and community volunteers, plus the involvement of our corporate partners, we will make a difference in helping to feed America’s hungry and surpass the 2010 national total of 77 million pounds of food collected, said Northern New England District Manager Deborah Essler. “The generosity of our customers and the determination of our employees have never been stronger. Donations from last year’s event pushed the overall total since the annual drive began 19 years ago to more than 1 billion pounds. NALC President Fredric

Rolando said that as successful as the food drive has been in the past, it must be better this year due to the struggling economy. “The NALC Food Drive is critical for millions of American families who are struggling to make ends meet during the recession, said Rolando. “It is the one day that all citizens have the opportunity, with the help of their letter carrier, to easily donate food to needy families in their community. More than 120 million postcards — designed by the Postal Service and co-sponsored by the Campbell Soup Company — will be mailed to customers to remind them of the drive.

Distinguished professor to speak at commencement A respected and influential professor, Paul Albro, gives the 2011 Castleton State College Commencement Address, at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 14. Professor Albro taught business administration at Castleton from 1977 until his retirement last December. Popular among students, he was known for courses that were engaging but challenging. His expectations were always high; his capstone class for seniors, Strategic Management or “Policy, was legendary. His influence on the college extended far beyond his own classroom. During his career, he served as department chair and president of the Faculty

Paul Albro Assembly. His research led to a renewed emphasis on freshman advising and today’s First-Year Seminar program. Always an advocate of clear writing, he served on the committee that drafted the college’s Writing

Standards. He served in Vietnam, and while a professor, he was a volunteer fireman in Castleton and Hubbardton. Nearly 400 students will receive diplomas in the ceremony held on the Old Chapel Green. Tickets are required for admission to the tent where the ceremony is held, but additional guests can sit on the lawn. The event is also shown on a large screen in the Casella Theater. The ceremony will be online through Northeast Sports Network. A prominent link to the coverage will be found on the Castleton website, www.castleton.edu.

Museum taps into craft beer, local food

By Bill Toscano

When you say “museum,” the next word to come to mind is definitely not “beer.” The Bennington Museum is changing that by tapping into the growing interest in homebrewing. In September, the museum will host the fifth annual Southern Vermont Homebrewers Festival, but beer geeks won’t have to wait that long to help raise money for the museum by having a few beers. The Museum will host a “Food and Beer Pairing” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, May 20. “This is the second year we have done it,” museum executive director Stephen Perkins said. “Last year was much smaller, maybe six or seven restaurants and beers. It was fun, and it was intimate. I think this year’s will be much more sophisticated. A limited number of tickets are being sold to this event, and they are available now. Tickets are $40 per ticket, $35 for museum members. You may call 802 447-1571 to order your tickets, visit www.benningtonmuseum.org or stop by the museum. Major credit cards are accepted. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street in Bennington. Perkins sees a clear connection between the museum’s mission and showcasing craft beer and local food. “As the Bennington Museum, we celebrate the culture of the area, and the craft. Isn’t making food a beer a craft?” Many of the finest chefs in the region will prepare food to

go with international and regional craft brews that have been selected by Scott Anderson, craft beer portfolio manager. Affiliated with G. Housen, a leading multi-brand distributor of premium wine, beer and soft beverages, Anderson is creating brew and food matches that cannot be compared. Beer fans will recognize some of these as among the best American microbreweries have to off, and the addition of Belgian beers adds the high level of quality. From Portland, Maine, Anderson will bring two of Allagash Brewing’s Belgian styles -- White and Tripel. From Stone Brewing in California, a brewery at the forefront of the big” beer movement, there will be Smoked Porter, Vertical Epic and the very popular, Arrogant Bastard Ale. Saison Dupont Farmhouse Ale from Brasserie Dupont in Belgium, and Foret Organic Ale, a Saison beer that is the first certified organic beer in Belgium will make the trip across the Atlantic. The Saison Dupont is an excellent entry beer for anyone interested in one of the Belgian styles. Bosteels Tripel Darmeilt, and Scaldis Refermentee Ale are also on the menu, and of Bennington’s own Madison Brewing Company will have its beer there. Of course, there is one of the great brews made in Bennington at Madison Brewing Company. The restaurants are at the same high level. They will include The Perfect Wife, Carmody’s West, Mt. Anthony Country Club, Spice Root, Four

Chimneys Inn, Crazy Russian Girls Neighborhood Bakery, Wild Oats Market, Madison Brewing Company, The Publyk House, Bennington Station, and That’s a Wrap and more. The Invisible Jams, an upand-coming acoustic rock duo will be playing a mix of original acoustic and electric rock tunes with an indie edge. While most of the band’s tunes are originals, they also weave a number of cover jams into their live sets Brewfest in September Perkins said the museum’s success brew fest also added impetus to the tasting event.”We already have a great craft beer event in the fall, and we added the pairing to balance it.” The fifth annual Southern Vermont Homebrew Festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m., Sept. 24, at the Bennington Bruch Company on North Street.

large number of local towns in both Rutland and Bennington counties have taken part in the program in the past. Andrea Robare, the reference librarian at Southern Vermont College, said the book project brought together her school, Bennington College and the McCullough Library. “It’s a nice bridge,” she said. “It’s a way for the community and the colleges to work together. We had never done a project with Bennington before, and it was nice to be able to do that.” At Southern Vermont a professor did small-group activities based on the book with students, staff and faculty. McCullough used it in its

brews to be judged by an expert

The Bennington Museum's beer and food pairing will feature a wide variety of both.

'To Kill A Mockingbird' picked as 'Vermont Reads' 2011 book When the Ver mont Humanities Council chose the book for this year’s annual “Vermont Reads” program, it picked an iconic story that resonates with both racism and our memories of junior high or high school English class. “To Kill A Mockingbird,” which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and was made into a movie starring Gregory Peck, is this year’s choice for the program. The Humanities Council will provide up to 75 copies of the book to communities that apply. The council will also include resource and publicity material. Some communities are well under way with their programs, and the deadline for those who want to take part is Monday, May 16, though the council will consider proposals after that date. The book, written by Harper Lee, tells the story of racism in a small Southern town through the eyes of a 6-year-old girl named Scout growing up in the Deep South in the 1930s. Reading it and discussing its themes has been a rite of passage of students for nearly 50 years. So far, 31 communities are taking part, including Bennington and Manchester. A

The competition to find the

book clubs and had a lawyer come in to discuss the book. Oceana Wilson, Director of Library and Information Services at Bennington College got a group of college students together and took them to local schools to facilitate Vermont Public Radio just finished a series of stories on the book, which are available at www.vpr.com. NRG Systems of Hinesburg is the underwriter of the 2011 Vermont Reads program, and have underwritten the program since 2007. Free dental care available On Saturday, May 21, 40 dentists across Southern Vermont are volunteering their time to help patients in need. This event promises to be the largest in the state’s history as five locations in three different counties host a simultaneous Free Dental Care Day. The all-day event provides extractions and dental restorative care to Vermonters 18 years or older who do not carry any dental insurance on a firstcome, first-served basis. Those interested in receiving dental care are encouraged to arrive and register early in order to ensure treatment. Patients will be able to register at a specific location in their county. Upon registering, they will be referred to the dentist best suited to serve their needs and will be treated the same day. Registration locations include: In Rutland County, register at Oral and Facial Surgery Associates, 155 Woodstock Ave. In Manchester County, register a Richard Heilemann, DDS, 74 Long View Drive, Manchester Center. In Bennington County, register at Oral and Facial Surgery Associates, 2 Harwood Drive. This Free Dental Care Day was created by a combination of the

International Team of Implantology (Project-31) and Drs. John-Michael Stewart, Robert S. Ruhl and Louis A. Beaudette in August 2008. The event covers Rutland, Manchester, Bennington, Wilmington and Brattleboro, and will be the fifth Free Dental Care Day since its inception. “This is probably going to be our most successful Free Dental Care Day yet, said “Vermont is all about helping others and I like to think this Free Dental Care Day is in line with that sense of community we get from living here, said Dr. Ruhl. “Whether it’s shoveling someone’s driveway, helping raise a barn, or providing free dental care, we help our neighbors. The Free Dental Care Day could not operate without financial and other support from the United Ways of Bennington, Rutland, and Windham Counties, Southwester n Vermont Health Care (SVHC), Proctor & Gamble, Crest, Patterson Dental, Henry Schein Dental and the Vermont State Dental Society and its member dentists. Patients interested in more information should call 2-1-1.

VERMONT FOREST & FIELD

RAFFL needs you to grow an extra row

Since the summer of 2009 volunteers serving with the Rutland Area Farm and Food Link (RAFFL) have worked tirelessly to ensure that a portion of Rutland County’s summer bounty is shared with those in need. Healthy Rutland-grown produce is not always universally available and RAFFL is committed to increasing access to local foods through the Grow-a-Row Project. During the past two growing seasons Grow-a-Row has helped distribute tens of thousands of pounds of fresh local produce and the summer of 2011 will be no exception, but not without help. Do you have a garden or farm? Please consider growing a bit of extra food for Grow-a-Row. All it takes is an extra tomato plant or an extra row of carrots. All donations are graciously accepted regardless of size. Last summer, Roman Wdowiak, a backyard gardener in Brandon found himself over his head in potatoes. He remembers “as I began to harvest I became aware that I was going to have a much bigger crop then I had expected. I gave as much as I could to my friends and neighbors but I soon realized that much would go to waste. That’s when I thought of your pro-

gram. In August Wdowiak donated 130 pounds of his massive potato crop to Grow-a-Row. The potatoes were distributed among six different charitable agencies in Rutland City. Wdowiak notes how easy it is to donate produce through Grow-aRow: “without a lot of effort and just a few contacts I was able to find a home for the extras I had grown. One of the major benefits or donating through Grow-a-Row is that food is distributed proportionally among the different charities. Different types of produce are sorted so that each agency receives a scale-appropriate amount of produce and the varieties are sorted and distributed based on agency preferences. Some of the most desired crops are tomatoes, potatoes, carrots, cucumbers sweet corn, and green beans although any type of vegetable will be put to good use. By funneling donations through Grow-a-Row produce is evenly distributed among the charities to ensure that nothing goes to waste. Scott Holliman of Middletown Springs who donated squash and zucchini to the program last year reflected on his participation, “for me, one of the joys of maintaining a good size single-

family garden is growing so much food that I’m able to give quite a bit away to friends and family who don’t grow their own. I don’t have a lot of money to give away, but I’m happy to give away part of the abundance that bears forth from the land I live on and the time and energy I invest in it. And the idea of giving away good, organic vegetables to those particularly in need is satisfying. Throughout the summer and fall you can drop your produce off with RAFFL volunteers at Rutland Market (Saturday) or Tuesday Market (Thursday) beginning at 1 pm. If you need help harvesting the produce contact RAFFL to arrange to bring a crew out to harvest or glean. For those who don’t grow a garden there are other ways to become involved in Grow-a-Row as well. Volunteers are needed to collect produce at farmers’ markets throughout the summer and to harvest and glean vegetables at local farms. If you are interested in volunteering or if you are interested in growing and have any questions, please contact Local-Link Coordinator Garland Mason by emailing growarow@rutlandfarmandfood.org or by calling 287-2940.
