Technology Detects and People Save Lives At Rutland Regional, we combine the latest technology with the best doctors and staff around. As a doctor, I couldn’t do my job without the advanced diagnostic imaging tools we have available. It is even harder to imagine being able to help my patients without the amazing team I work with every day. Our Diagnostic Imaging’s Breast MRI program was the first of its kind in New England and I’ve seen it save lives. One patient I’ll always remember was in her mid-forties when her annual mammogram showed some abnormalities. Her care was a coordinated effort between her surgeon, her oncologist and myself. We worked together with the patient and her family to develop a treatment plan that would get her back on the road to wellness. And now? She’s been cancer free for more than 5 years. I’m proud I could be part of the team that helped save her life.

Veterans of the Civil War group will hold an all-day reenactment of the event, complete with speeches from Gov. Fairbanks, Col. Phelps and Judge Smalley. The encampment will be in Main Street Park. Ripley Camp No. 4 of the Sons of Union Veterans will sponsor the event, which opens to the public at 10 a.m. There will be eight reenactors from Fair Haven, six from Castleton and two from Poultney in the ranks, according to local resident Jim Proctor, of Bomoseen, who is one of those organizing the event. “We just want to remember the 150 anniversary of the Vermont Boys from all over the state leaving for Washington to protect the Union, and educate the public, Proctor said, noting that the Sons of Union veterans have had encampments in the park in Rutland before but has never commemorated
this specific event. Proctor's group is the Champlain Valley Historical Reenactors. The First Vermont was mustered in Rutland for three months of service against the Confederacy. The unit saw combat at Big Bethel in Virginia. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the park, which is at the corner of Routes 4 and 7. There will be military and civilian camps set up, a period medical corps, and artillery. The event is being coordinated by Proctor and Francis Owens of Fair Haven. The swearing-in ceremony will be reenacted at 10:30 a.m., followed by a regimental drill and rifle firing at 11 a.m. The big guns come out at noon for the cannon display and demonstration, and the mustering-in will be held at 1:30 p.m. There will be a wreath-laying at the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial at 2:30 p.m., and the First Vermont will be on the field for a 3 p.m. presentation. The camps close to the public at 4 p.m.

Delayed by rain, Devil's Bowl starts this weekend Racing fans will have to wait a little longer for the season to open at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt. Last Sunday’s planned opener was a victim of the weekend’s rainy weather, and the track will try again this Sunday with what will still be a major event -- a visit from the American-Canadian Tour. Sunday’s event, which take the green flag at 2 p.m., will be
the first appearance of the ACT at Devil’s Bowl. Last year, the track hosted a Late Model race for the group. More than 30 race teams are expected at the event. Brian Hoar, who won the season-opening NH Governor’s Cup at Thunder Road, is the points leader after two races at 188, three points ahead of John Donahue. Randy Potter is third at 169.

Legion celebrating "Poppy Day" May 27 The Poultney American Legion Auxiliary has designated Friday, May 27th as Poppy Day for our area. Volunteers from the Auxiliary will be at various places in Poultney accepting donations in exchange for the red poppy. The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn by Americans to honor those who served and died for their coun-
try. The disabled and hospitalized veterans who make the flowers are able to earn a small wage, which makes them feel more self-sufficient. The physical and mental activity provides many therapeutic benefits for the veteran. The materials to make the poppy are provided by the Auxiliary units in each state. We ask that all citizens pay tribute to those who have made
the ultimate sacrifice in the name of our freedom by wearing the poppy. However you decide to celebrate Memorial Weekend, be sure to stop and remember the men and women who fought and are fighting for our country. Their fight has helped to create the freedom that allows us to enjoy days like these.

Wells sixth graders enjoy 'History Day' Sixth graders from the Wells Village School recently had a very successful trip to Barre to participate in the statewide Vermont History Day competition. Their project, a video titled “Ending a War: The Successful Diplomacy of Peter Galbraith, U.S. Ambassador to Croatia, earned first place in the junior division (grades six through eight) group documentary category. The video was created by Damian Bell, Olivia Haskins, Kobe Roberts, and Walker Stomski and also received the award for the best entry on an international topic in the junior division. A highlight for the students during the process of making the documentary was the chance to meet and record an interview with former Ambassador Galbraith, who now serves as a Vermont State Senator. The students received a “superior rating from the judges which, in combination with their first place finish, resulted in their selection to represent Vermont at the National History Day contest in Washington from June 13 to June 16. The cost of this trip, including contest registration, transportation, and room and board for the four students and a chaperone, will be approximately $3,500. Contributions toward this amount will be greatly appreciated and can be sent to the Wells Student Fund, Wells Village School, 135 Vermont Route 30, Wells, VT 05774.

a split personality – most times it is calm and then along comes a storm and it’s like you have two full-time jobs. Well, it takes someone pretty special to handle all of this. You get to see both sides of each situation and you begin to realize that it is just another form of politics. You give a little, take a little. Sometimes you win, sometimes you don’t. It takes a man of a great degree of stubbornness to take a stance and stand rigid for the cause. But it also is a job for a man of intelligence to study and understand both sides and to know when it’s just not going to fly. Over the years the unions have appeared as greedy as the rest of the nation by going into every negotiation with the “Finley, Ohio Attitude of always come out with something – anything. Now this makes one ask, “Are we paying for their socks, jocks and toothpaste yet? What lies ahead for the unions is what lies ahead for the country. For the past ten years there has been a big push by big business to eliminate unions. If that happens “The middle class will disappear. And what’s left – Rich vs. Poor. At that point are we: (1) back at the turn of the century with a handful of rich

Scholarship fundraiser a big success at FHUHS
7ZLJ UHPHPEHUV Donny Parker My thoughts over the past few days have taken me back to 1957 and begin with two preteen boys frog hunting down at Mud Brook. The times were so different; one thin dime could get you an ice cold coke on a hot summer day. After a good game of sandlot baseball you could hitchhike, without fear, up to the small pavilion at Crystal Beach, to learn new dance steps from the cute little chicks who hung out there. But this all began with a long trip to the jukebox and the decision on which three songs to play for that quarter. There were no drugs and a 50-cent quart of black label beer was the beverage of the night. The night police officer. He was a big round-bellied lad and you know we liked to heckle him. He had had enough of Walt Jones’ siren sounds and we could see the headlights of his old black ’51 Ford abounding up
the Adams Street hill so we headed in four different directions. All at once “Halt, halt we could hear the bullets hitting in the tops of the trees. Nobody was timing us, but I know that Donny and I ran that mile to Mud Brook in under four minutes. Back then at night we would sit on the fence across from the bank and wait to see where the action was. One night we were early and across from Main Street came a young lady. I mentioned how attractive she was. Says he, “That’s the girl I’m going to marry. “Right, Parker, Right. About seven years later they were married. That’s just the way things were back then, plain and simple. I’d go back in a Monday minute. When I’m writing these articles I wonder if God gives us a chance to get together again and re-do a thing or two. Well, if so, that puts Donny and I back
at Mud Brook with our homemade spears in pursuit of that huge bug eyed frog that put the two of us in that pool of water called Mud Brook. Donny slipped on a wet rock. Well, he didn’t appreciate my laughter and put his hand out for help. I obliged and he yanked me in. We had a great time leaping and splashing. All was a great time ‘til we got home and then it was “Turn out the lights, the party’s over. Safe trip Donny and don’t forget what your old friend David Dudley told you back in the mid-1960’s. I.C.C. is a chicken on down the line. I’m a little overloaded and my log books far behind. I just passed a jimmy and a white. I’m passin’ everything in sight. Six days on the road and I’m gonna make it home tonight. God bless. Twig Canfield

Student Council, led by the efforts of Senior Jenna Charron, organized a scholarship fundraiser in the honor of FHU administrative assistant Diane Flood. So many people rose to the occasion with baking items, selling tickets, spreading the word via Facebook (and other social media outlets), playing in the game, outright donations and a myriad of other efforts. It was an overwhelmingly positive night that saw an amazing faculty “victory over our FHU seniors. While the scorekeeping may have seemed a bit in favor of the faculty, it was still a good showing by all. Thanks go to the Booster Club, parents, students, faculty and many, many in our extended community. Enjoy the sun and have a great week, Brett C. Blanchard, Principal
