After several years of growth, Dennis Browns' grapes are featured in several varieties of wine.

Vintage Poultney Lakes Region vineyard offers authentic Vermont wine By Derek Liebig Dennis Brown has been making wine for his own personal use for years. He’s also spent the last several years raising his own grapes. And now both those efforts have come together with the opening of his business, Whaleback Vineyards. Many local residents would probably recognize the small vineyard. Located at 202 Old Lake Road, just off Route 30 at the northern terminus of Lake St. Catherine in Poultney, Brown has been raising grapes on the gentle hillside for several years. The plastic mulch and trellis system went in several years ago and the vines were added later and have since grown into a mature vineyard. “It’s been an ongoing thing. It’s taken years to get the vines started,” Brown said. “I just got through all the licensing around December.” The business offers a selection of seasonal wines. Brown said he currently has four varieties of wine available, including a Rioja, Marquette, St. Croix and even an apple wine. “There are lots of other varieties coming up,” he said. Brown said that up until 15 years of ago it

was difficult to produce grape wines in the area because most varieties of grapes couldn’t survive the harsh winter climate in the region. However with the development of more winter hardy grape varieties, all that changed, creating a surge of vineyards in Vermont. “The grapes I grow can survive up to 30 below, instead of 12 or 15 below. These varieties didn’t exist until 10 or 12 years ago.” The process from vine to palette takes time. Besides the years spent raising and caring for the grapes, Brown has to pick the fruit, crush it, press out the juice, ferment the fruit and finally add the yeast. He said most white wines are ready about a year after they are bottled while red wines take longer. “They take about two years to mellow down and get to peak,” Brown said. The flavor of each wine is influenced by a number of things including the variety of yeast used and the vessels in which the wine is produced. Brown said he prefers un-oaked wines meaning the wine ferments in a stainless steel vessel as opposed to one made of wood, specifically

This is the 41st year for the state-wide event, which is sponsored by the Green Up Vermont organization. To continue the Vermont tradition of taking care of the state’s beautiful landscape, the town invites all citizens and groups to volunteer their time that day to help clean the community. Wine Continued from front page oak. “I like the flavor without the distractions,” he said. Besides wine, Brown is also offering homebrew and winemaking supplies for the amateur vintner or brewer. “I offer all the ingredients and equipment. I thought it would be kind of nice to have supplies local,” he said, pointing out that many people in the area who produce wine and

beer travel great distances or use the internet to find supplies. For now Brown plans to limit sales to a small salesroom on the farm. If the response is favorable, he may offer the wines elsewhere in the future. He said the vineyard is open Friday, Saturday and Sundays, although he can be found tending to his grapes almost every day of the week, something he enjoys. “It’s a whole new adventure,” he said.

efforts aren’t duplicated and she knows where bags will be located when volunteers are done picking up trash. Bags can be left on the side of the road and the Department of Public Works will retrieve them at the end of the day. Janet Ladd said nothing special is planned in Benson but Green Up Day bags can be picked up during normal hours at the Village Store, Town Offices, G N’ L Store and the Silverware store. She also said the 4-Wheeler store has volunteered to clean the village. Residents in Castleton should call Green Up Day coordinator Julie Finnegan at 4685197 to learn more about activities in that community. Middletown Springs coordinators are Hilary Solomon and Elizabeth Cooper and can be reached at 235-1115 or 235-1406, respectively. The first Green Up Day was held on April 18, 1970. Outraged by the amount of trash on the sides of Vermont’s byways, Robert S Babcock Jr. proposed the idea of a statewide effort to clean up litter every spring. Deane C. Davis, the governor of Vermont at the time, liked the proposal and Green Up Day was thus born. To learn more about Green Up Vermont, Green Up Day or for a list of local Green Up coordinators, call 229-4586, or 800974-3259 or visit www.greenupvermont.org.

Fair Haven Fire Departments new rescue pumper is already in service.

New `Predator' for Fair Haven FD; Department looking for volunteers The Fair Haven Fire Department has taken delivery of “ER 522” a 2011 KME Predator Rescue Pumper. It will replace the 1982 GMC engine, which has already been removed from service due to engine problems, and the1994 mini pumper which will be available for sale. This truck, ER 522 will be the first-out attack engine on all fires in our district, and will also carry our extrication/rescue equipment which is used at motor vehicle accidents. FHFD’s Apparatus Committee is pleased with the design of the vehicle, which will meet Fair Haven’s needs for the next 20-25 years. In addition to enhancing our fire suppression capability, this design will save precious minutes during serious vehicle extrications. Also, the added storage area of an “engine-

rescue” will allow us to carry all of our specialized equipment on a single unit, readily available at the scene of any 21st century emergency, improving efficiency, effectiveness, and safety. Fire apparatus costs have skyrocketed in recent years, but with what Fair Haven has invested with this piece of apparatus will serve this town for years to come. Officers and Members of the Fair Haven Fire Department would also at this time like to invite anyone interested in joining to come in and see us. This would be the ideal time you could learn and operate this piece of apparatus right beside us. Applications are available at the Town Office or at the fire house when someone is available to get you one.

Technology Detects and People Save Lives At Rutland Regional, we combine the latest technology with the best doctors and staff around. As a doctor, I couldn’t do my job without the advanced diagnostic imaging tools we have available. It is even harder to imagine being able to help my patients without the amazing team I work with every day. Our Diagnostic Imaging’s Breast MRI program was the first of its kind in New England and I’ve seen it save lives. One patient I’ll always remember was in her mid-forties when her annual mammogram showed some abnormalities. Her care was a coordinated effort between her surgeon, her oncologist and myself. We worked together with the patient and her family to develop a treatment plan that would get her back on the road to wellness. And now? She’s been cancer free for more than 5 years. I’m proud I could be part of the team that helped save her life.

Fair Haven Grade School has received grant of $200 from the Vermont Arts Council. This grant was awarded through the Council’s new Cultural Routes Program and it will support transportation costs for students from our school to several theatrical performances at Castleton State College this spring. The Arts Council developed the Cultural Routes Program to help underwrite the cost of field trips to cultural events such as music, dance and theatre performances, or exhibits at art museums. The program addresses a growing need for arts-related field trips due to the pressure of dwindling budgets. Book Fair through May 9 The FHGS PTA will be sponsoring a Scholastic Book Fair from May 2nd through May 9th in the Literacy Center. The Book Fair will be open two evenings, from 6:30-8:00 PM on Wednesday, May 3, for School Report Night and on Friday,

Major honors to Roach as top music educator Congratulations to Band Director Mr. Peter Roach for earning the Green Mountain Music District Music Educator of the Year! Mr. Roach has done an outstanding job to see our students have the opportunity to excel. For those that were in attendance at last month’s Pop Concert, the variety and skill of our students were clearly evident.

F.H.U.H.S NEWS season. The interview will be held Tuesday for showing later this week. 'Visit' to Ghana “You can imagine our excitement!â€? says Mr. Burlette. Mrs. Sheldon and her Ethnic Advanced Foods classes visited Ghana, Africa, on Monday, April 25th via the LNV (Learning Network of Vermont). It was our first time ever to connect outside of the U.S. using the LNV. FHUHS students were connected to African students in Ghana through collaboration with content provider Oiada International, Inc. This highly interactive videoconferencing program was structured to meet the needs of Mrs. Sheldon’s curriculum and included exploring different foods of Ghana and methods of food preparation, interesting facts about the Ghanaians and their culture, specifically their music, religion, art, entertainment, education and a touch of history. The following responses reflect our students’ reactions to this educational experience— “I loved the LNV presentation-it exposed me to other cultures, I saw authentic cuisine and learned ethnic phrases‌â€?, â€œâ€ŚIt was really cool to actually visit and speak with people in a different country. They cook using stuff from the land, not box and manufactured stuff like we do‌â€?, â€œâ€ŚThey were dressed in fancy clothing. It was an interesting look into another culture.â€?, “The clothing was nice; so was the music.â€?, â€œâ€ŚI liked the dancing and the songs.â€? was a fun experience, great singers, amazing food, I loved Daddy."

Thanks to boosters We would like to extend a sincere thank you to the Slater Booster Club. They recently contributed $2000 to the athletic program to help offset some unanticipated safety mandates at the national level for the upcoming fall season, as well as another $675 for improvements to other teams. The national field hockey committee recently informed us that eye protection will be required for all players starting in the fall of 2011, and the booster club graciously donated $700 to help offset the cost of “eye cages. The national football helmet reconditioners also informed each high school in America that following the upcoming fall season, any helmet older than 10 years will not be reconditioned. In an attempt to get ahead, the boosters approved the purchase of 10 new helmets for this upcoming season, which will in turn reduce the amount of replacement helmets we will need to budget for in 2012-13. Contributions to the baseball and golf programs were also made by the club. Again, we thank them for all they do to help the FHU students. Look for details about this summer’s 4th Annual SLATER CUP golf tournament. Flannigan on television WCAX TV will be interviewing junior Kaylie–Ann Flannigan about the FHU Service Club’s Teddy Bear Drive for nursing homes in Colorado. Therapy dogs deliver these gifts to patients for the next holiday
