Historian to speak on Civil War Sunday Noted Vermont historian and author Howard Coffin will speak on "Vermont in the Civil War" on Sunday, June 12 at 2 p.m. at the Rupert Congregational Church on Main St. in Rupert. This event, to mark the 150th anniversary of the war, is sponsored by the Rupert Historical Society.

Pawlett Historical Society plans tag, bake sales June 18 Please mark your calendars for the Pawlett Historical Society Tag Sale and Bake Sale to be held on Saturday, June 18. The Tag and Bake Sales will be between 830 a.m. and noon at the Pawlet Firehouse on VT-133, just outside the center of downtown Pawlet. Consider what you may have to donate to the Tag Sale, as well as what you may be seeking! The Tag Sale will be full of treasures from household goods to antiques, linens, and more. Baked goods will also be available, accompanied by free coffee. PHS members will be setting

up on Fri., June 17 at the Pawlet Firehouse and will receive donations of serviceable items (no clothing please) on Friday between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Baked goods may be brought to the Firehouse the morning of the event,, June 18. During the tag sale, raffle tickets will be available. The drawing will be held during the town-wide Pawlet 250th Charter anniversary celebrations on Saturday August 27. Wells event seeking vendors The Wells United Methodist Church will host its 34th Variety Day Fair at the park in Wells, Vt., Saturday, July 16. This fun-filled family day offers a variety of vendors, a giant silent auction, the “famous” Vermont food court, a burger stand and an ice cream booth. There will also be various contests and games, and a sawdust pile treasure hunt. Enjoy great music through-

out the day, and the “Wild Cloggers” in the afternoon. Organizers note that there is still some room available for vendors, such as craft, flea market, antiques or other unusual items. Dorset Nurses' Barn Dance Saturday Dorset Nursing Association will host a full night of entertainment featuring great music, food and fun from 6 to 11 p.m. Saturday, June 11, at the Schwindt Barn on the Dorset West Rd in Dorset. Castleton to host T.S. Ensemble for concert Take a great sound, smooth vocals, and seasoned professional musicians, and what you come up with is a first class concert, this Tuesday, June 14. New York based, T.S. Ensemble will deliver this and more, on the Castleton green, starting at 7:00 pm. T.S. Ensemble is an eightpiece group consisting of male and female vocalists, trumpet, flugelhorn, saxophone, trombone, electronic keyboard/synthesizers, guitar, bass, and percussion. Their performances create an atmosphere that is energized and upbeat and they have been thrilling music lovers for over 25 years. Led by Al Santoro, drummer and vocals, he started his musical career as a principal percussionist with The Empire State Youth Orchestra, appearing with The Philadelphia Orchestra and performing for Pres. Reagan, as well as having the opportunity to play with the Drifters. Whether it’s from behind the drums or out in front of the band, his energy and unique vocal stylings help make the TS Ensemble one of the most sought after acts in the Northeast. Terry Haddad, vocals, has been performing professionally for 11 years. Her credits include the headlining performer on many cruise lines and resorts, and opening for Tony Orlando. Car show rolls into Benson After a successful first event in 2010, the second annual Benson Car Show will take place at the Benson Community Hall on Saturday, June 18, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. “It went very well last year,” said Gina Cull, one of the show’s organizers. Last year’s show saw 30 cars entered, with the entries from as far away as Pennsylvania. Three awards will be given in the categories of best paint job, best interior, and most popular. “It’s all voted on by the public,” she commented. This year’s event will add live entertainment by Emily Billado, as well as a cake walk at which people can take a chance on winning a cake. As in last year’s show, there will be

several vendors, including food vendors. Patrons can also take in the Library Book Sale, which will be going on adjacent to the show. The car show is a fundraiser for the Veterans Monument in Benson, said Cull. Currently, the monument needs updating with the names of service men and women who have served or are currently serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. “The money raised will go towards adding the new names,” Cull said. This offer extends to residents and non-residents alike. “Vermont Days is a perfect opportunity to explore the outstanding variety of recreation, culture and history in Vermont,� said Governor Peter Shumlin in a recent press release. “The event also showcases Vermont’s strong sense of community and the deep appreciation Vermonters share for this wonderful place we call home.� Sponsored by the state of Vermont, the weekend is intended to promote interest in Vermont’s natural, historic and cultural attractions. Perhaps the highlight of the weekend is Saturday’s free fishing day, the only day in the year when residents and non-residents may fish without a license. The free fishing day conveniently coincides with the start of the largemouth and smallmouth bass season. For fishing families, several area bodies of water have been named as Family Friendly Hot Spots, including: Lake Bomoseen, Lake St. Catherine, Half Moon Pond, Gale Meadow Pond and Lake Shaftsbury. Lake St. Catherine has a free Let’s Go Fishing clinic sched-

uled from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. The clinic teaches children everything they need to know about fishing including skills, tackle craft, ecology and ethics. At many participating sites, visitors will find special events and activities. At the Hubbardton Battlefield State Historic Site, 5696 Monument Road in Hubbardton, organizers have planned a “Go Fly a Kite!� activity from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Participants will learn how to make a simple kite (or they can bring their own) and have the chance to fly it high above the battlefield. The park will also offer its normal activities as well, including flag raising and colonial-era games for children. Further north in Orwell, the Mount Independence State Historical Site will host an event dubbed, “Vermont History through Song,� at 1 p.m. on Saturday. Singer and researcher Linda Radtke and pianist Arthur Zorn will bring Vermont history to life with engaging commentary about the songs found in the Vermont Historical Society’s collection of sheet music. The following day, the park will host an interactive “Plant and Tree Walk� from 1 to 3 p.m. Clinical herbalist Julie Mitchell will lead a nature walk, showing participants how to identify plants and trees, and speak about their traditional and modern uses in medicine. Attendees are encouraged to dress for the weather, wear stur-

dy shoes, and bring along their identification books (if they have them) and a sense of adventure. In Bennington, visitors will have the chance to learn more about the tallest structure in Vermont, the Bennington Battle Monument. Of course guests will also be able to enjoy all the normal historical attractions at all three sites. For those who prefer outdoor recreation, visitors can enjoy the day use facilities of the area’s state parks. Locally, entry to Bomoseen State Park, Lake St. Catherine State Park, Emerald Lake State Park, Shaftsbury State Park and Half Moon State Park are all free. Most of these areas offer guests a chance to enjoy boating, swimming, and fishing, and feature a number of picnicking areas. For more specific information on the amenities and activities available at each park, visit www.vtstateparks.com. For those willing to travel, the Vermont History Museum in Montpelier will exhibit a fullsized wigwam, a re-creation of the Catamount Tavern with the Green Mountain Boys, and the “Freedom and Unity: One Ideal, Many Stories� multimedia exhibit. Poultney Cemetery board makes series of decisions By Janice B. Edwards Poultney Cemetery Association’s Board of Trustees wish the landowners and public to know that several matters were recently discussed at board meeting held to review winter and spring storm damage clean up work needing attention at the Association’s property. Poultney Cemetery is an historic scenic property located

within the Village of Poultney on Beaman Street adjacent to St. Raphael’s Catholic Cemetery. Poultney Cemetery is owned by the Association and its landowners. Association President Lynn McGann said that at the recent meeting the Board reviewed vandalism and property thefts that had occurred during the winter and spring season at the property as well as general

Thefts at the cemetery included the metal military marker flag stands, property of the American Legion, which occurred at Poultney Cemetery as well as at many other area cemeteries. A clean up project reviewed and approved for immediate removal is that of a large decayed tree. President McGann further stated that the Board reviewed marker restoration work needed and approved that restoration of markers located in the historic Beaman Street section shall be the Association’s first priority as restoration funds are available. Due to the age of many markers throughout the cemetery, a considerable amount of restoration work needs to be done. The board approved that the

first marker restoration that will be done shall be for the marker of a Civil War Captain who died at Cold Harbor , Virginia in 1864 at the age of 24 years and who was buried in Poultney Cemetery alongside his parents. Tax deductible donations to the Association designated for “old gravestones restoration” will be gladly accepted by any Trustee. Aaron Boynton has resigned as the principal of Middletown Springs Elementary school to become assistant principal at Rutland Town School. In a letter to parents, Boynton write: “Please know that my reasons are based completely on family needs and not due to my health or happiness here in Middletown Springs. I leave with nothing but good things to say about this school, community, and all of you. I will work

hard to help make the end of the year successful in every way and help make the transition with the new principal as smooth as possible.” The School Board released him from his contract and said: “ Mr. Boynton has served this school and community well for the last four years. He has fostered a strong learning community and helped bring 21st Century learning skills to our school. We wish him well at

ARC has variety of volunteer positions available The Association of Retarded Citizens of the Rutland Area have a number of volunteer opportunities available. The following is an overview of the responsibilities associated with different volunteer opportunities and a general

understanding of the time commitment required. Secretary: We need a few volunteers to share various duties of the front office: open the mail, file, take calls, type, use computer and other misc. things that come up. This position relieves duties from the Representative Payee and Executive Director, so the volunteer would be working closely with both. From 9Am 12 noon, Mon – Thurs, a person can do one or all mornings. Could also use someone on Tues and Weds from 12 noon – 3:30 p.m. Board of Directors member: Meet with other board members once a month from 6:00 to 7:30PM on the 3rd Tuesday of each month, in Rutland. Attend meeting, offer time/support with projects throughout year as they arrive; Sunday dances, petitions, and group activities. Advisor and Support persons to Self Advocates: Meets monthly 2nd Tuesday from 6:30 -8PM, in Rutland. Support group meeting and as is needed outside of meeting tasks. Help them pick goals and task/strategies, and encourage the follow through needed. Each meeting is run by the president and has an agenda of reading past minutes, treasurers’ report, goals and sharing, so participants learn how to be

active committee members. Attend monthly meetings so you are aware of their needs and are able to make time to support their goal activities; outings, car wash, and fundraisers. Advisor and Support persons to Aktion Club: Meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m., monthly second Thursday of the month in Rutland. Help support group as they run through their meeting. Help them with their many tasks of picking, organizing and doing community service work. The service committee needs to keep the projects moving, the board has to keep the organizational structure moving forward and the members need to participate, this all takes much “behind the scenes support”. Petition Project Leader: In August we start our yearly petition work. Evenings and Saturday mornings have worked the best for past years. Going to three different towns to collect signatures so we can be placed on the ballot for funding is needed, usually about three to four times or locations need to be addressed before all signatures for a town are completed. that can happen, including the full completion of the permit process and negotiations between Beaver Wood Energy and potential utility companies who would purchase the energy produced. An exact date of when construction would begin has not been determined. Beaver Wood Energy also proposed building a second plant in Pownal, Vt., but those plans have been put on hold after developers met resistance from the local community. If completed, the facility would be the third biomass plant in Vermont. Others are located in Burlington and Ryegate.

has the capability to supply electricity to up to 34,000 homes. The power produced would then be sold to utility company who would in turn sell the energy to its customers. The facility would also produce 110,000 tons of wood pellets per year which is equal to 13 million gallons of numbertwo heating oil. Emero said 80 percent of the wood needed to power the facility could be harvested within a 50-mile radius of the plant. He said today’s logging operations are inefficient because much of the tree, such as the branches, are left on the forest floor and aren’t utilized. The facility would use the entire tree as well as lower quality trees, such as softwood species which are often sold as pulp wood and generally don’t net as much of a profit for landowners. As with any kind of power producing facility, there are questions regarding its environmental impact. Emero said they have conducted numerous studies into the emissions the plant would produce and claims it will set a new standard in the county for emission rates. “It will be the cleanest biomass power plant and pellet plant in the country,� he said.

The head of a wood-burning power plant proposed for Fair Haven could produce hundreds of jobs in northeastern Washington County and western Rutland County, Vt. In a presentation last week in Whitehall, Thomas Emero, managing director of development and operations for Beaver Wood Energy, said the $250 million project has the potential to create about 200 of jobs in New York and Vermont and create tens of millions of dollars in revenue for local businesses and municipalities. He estimates that the project would create 50 permanent jobs, 140 full-time forestry related jobs and an additional 1,000 jobs (most in Vermont) during the construction phase. Although the plant would be located just off of Route 4 near the Visitors Center in Fair Haven, some of its operations would be located in Whitehall. “Part of the project is right here,� Emero said. He said the company has an option to purchase an old building adjacent to the Locke 12 Marina on North Williams Street where they would like to install a pumping station to draw water from Lake Champlain. That water would then be

used to aid in the cooling process at the facility. Emero said the pumping station would be approximately 10 feet wide and 16 feet long and would either be housed within the building or within a new structure behind the building. He said the structure would be very similar to the brick structure behind the library. The pump would have capability of pumping up to 650 gallons of water per minute and would travel to the plant through an eight- to 10-inch underground pipe. The cost of the pump and pipe has been estimated at $2 to $3 million and would be taxable. “It would directly create five to 10 jobs in Whitehall,� Emero said. He said he felt the project could reverse the trend of decreasing population and jobs in both Fair Haven and Whitehall. “The benefits are just as applicable for Whitehall as they are for Fair Haven.� Emero said. “The economic impact is both local and regional.� The facility would include both a 34-megawatt wood-fired power generating facility and a wood pellet producing plant. Essentially the plant would burn wood to create power and

Family matters edge out golf

We were just settling in, and two phone calls changed all of our early plans. We were invited to the graduation celebration of my godson’s daughter. She was Magna Cum Laude in her class and they asked me to do the blessing at the family’s party! How could I refuse? Next, my sister called to inform me of my uncle’s death! He was the last in my mother’s family. Her kid brother and one of my favorites. We were 5 years apart and hung out like buddies instead of uncle and nephew. He was a great pianist and helped me a great deal in my piano innovations. Although it was a tough ride for Margie and me, we were blessed with a great time of reunions, tears, laughter and a great celebration with my proud godson and his family. However, as far as golf, there was little news. Although I was able to share with some cousins about their games and some ideas about helping their practice sessions be more productive. This could become a regular part of the column. More and more I find many people who have no clue how to practice. I had the pleasure for introducing the first TEE group out of the Metawee School to their first golf lesson at the ‘Lake’ Monday morning, 24 youngsters from the fifth-grade came up for an intro to golf. Our Rich Milrad, VGA Representative set up the visit and I was ably assisted by Laura Edwards, Vince Sparkman, Seth Berkheimer and Rich. We introduced the youngsters to our range, supplied them with clubs and I gave them a brief intro to the grip, set-up and swing. We had a blast. Let’s hope there is more of this around. They are the future of the game! The tournament season is starting to take shape. Last week we had the Clem Vaughan Memorial. The Wescott boys have done an outstanding job in promoting the Vaughan as one of our earliest and most popular events! Some 80-plus golfers teed it up and some tore it up. The winners led by Jason Grambling posted a 58. This was just one stroke better than

the team of Roberts, C. Hicks, G. Jones and my man the ‘Jeffster’! 59 was not enough! We will have to go back to the Montcalm, Jeff and load up! Tip of the Week I hope, by now, you all have figured out that working with youngsters is my love! They are our most precious gift and the Good Lord says, we, their parents, are their first teachers! Their hands seem so weak and they lack coordination. I-Pods, twittering, I-phones and all of these other tech items will not improve the above problems Out in the air, walking on a golf course, carrying a golf bag and playing this great game will do more wonders than many think is possible. I mentioned to the first TEE kids to use silly putty as an aid. Squeezing withtwo and three fingers of each hand with the putty, will work wonders with their hand strength. It’s a start, let’s see if we can help keep our kids OUT OF THE ROUGH!

Joe Williams ran his Champlain Valley Racing Association winning streak to six races Sunday night when he picked up his second straight victory in the NASCAR Modified feature at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in West Haven, Vt. Williams, who has also won four in a row at AlbanySaratoga Speedway, started in the front row with veteran Mike Bruno by virtue of the headsup start, and with the feature going green to checkers, there was plenty of action. By lap 10, Williams got a nose in front of Bruno, but couldn’t make the pass because lapped traffic was already in play. But the next time around, Williams was able to get around Bruno. Bruno refused to go away, and with five to go, gave Williams a good tap, just to let him know he was still there. But Williams, who has already said he has his sights set on the Vermont state championship, held his ground and recorded his sixth overall win

of the year, with Bruno second and Don Miller, who ran a strong race, third. Ron Proctor was fourth, with defending CVRA Driver of the Year Hunter Bates fifth, but Bates came up light on the scales and was placed last. That moved Bobby Hackel IV to fifth. It was an extremely busy day for Bruno, who earlier in the day had been in Canaan, N.H., for a make-up late model race. He brought the same car to Devil’s Bowl and then took it to victory lane in the pro Late Model feature. Bill Dupree picked up his third straight win in the Renegade division. Frank Monroe settled for second, with Jeremy Jones third. The Bomber Warriors were also in action Sunday, with Matt Monahan taking the checkered flag in his first outing at the track this year.

The minute he’d step in the store he would be right after me about something and I’d get back after him and he’d have an answer for that. A perfect stranger would think that we were enemies, but not so. Old Cliver and I were good friends

and that’s how we got along. I hadn’t seen him in a few months. Well, I ran into his sister Harriet Ransom (I didn’t have a clue until I read the obit) and she told me he had been in bed battling cancer since February.

Ralph Norton Well, I knew him as a kid from the hardware store on Main Street in Fair Haven that bore his name. Not only a good place to pick up odds and ends for dad’s print shop, but a good place to pick up a jackknife, ball or bat, all kinds of stuff. But I guess I know him best from Post #49 Legion where for 50 years he was called “The Chaplain.� Not a real regular, but on any given night, in would pop Norton for a quick libation and his “new joke for the day.� He was a fun-loving guy. Now, let me tell you about the

first time I saw him. It was 1957, we had just moved over from Rutland and I was hanging out with Donny and Alan Parker, Beaver and George Cummings, and Wally Rogers with Billy “Banger� Jones and Carl Pratt down at Bob VanGuilder’s farm. That’s where we mud brookers went on a Saturday night to find out what was happening. Somebody mentioned a “Variety Show� at the Prospect Grange (brick building just up and across from F.H. Grade School) so down we went. We watched tap dancers, clowns, ballet and singers and

then came the adults and there was some very good talent in this little town. All at once out on the stage – black pants, white shirts, red & white vests, straw hats – he with a cane and she with a ukulele and off they went – “Won’t you come home Bill Bailey, won’t you come home, she cried the whole night long.� Thank you for that great show and all those great jokes. Chester Thayer 77, of Fair Haven, formerly of Eastford, Conn. died peacefully on Friday May 27, 2011 with his loving family at his bedside. He was born on August 31, 1933 in Orwell, VT. Chester was a twin born to the late Chester Erza and Grace (Lapsher) Thayer. Chester married Anna Farkas on Sept. 8, 1951. They have celebrated 59 wonderful years together. Throughout his life, Chet lived in Hubbardton, Castleton, Poultney and Fair Haven, Vt. and Eastford , Conn. He worked as a farmer, a mechanic, and loved his workshop. He was always tinkering with something. He loved Nascar Racing and going to Devil’s Bowl in Vermont and Thompson and Stafford Motor speedways in Connecticut . In addition to his wife, Chester is survived by his children: 5 daughters: Bonita King (Steve) of NC, Donna Spink (Peter), Anna Bryant (Terry)and Mary Freeland (George) all of

Connecticut, Paula White (Herbert) of Massachusetts, three sons: Chester Thayer, II (Betty) of Rhode Island, Frank Thayer (Beth) of Conn., and John Thayer (Lisa) of Vermont, a sister Muriel� Mert� Leonard of Ver mont and Florida, 23 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. He was predeceased by his brothers: Lester and Harold, his sisters Rose Bryant and Betty Alger; his daughter-in-law April Bourn Thayer and grandson Christopher Michael Thayer. Everyone enjoyed the tasty food, talented singing acts, volleyball, Frisbee, football, a three-legged race, and just relaxing. The Killington Music Festival, now in its 29th season of presenting fine chamber music, takes much pride and pleasure in announcing its concert schedule for 2011. For local residents, a special highlight will be a Friday Night Live concert in Rutland, scheduled for July 15. On July 23, “Russian Expressions�, works of Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich and Prokofiev. On July 30, “Claire de Lune�, works by Debussy, Beethoven and Ravel will be featured. Manchester car show arrives for its big annual weekend The Manchester Antique and Classic Car Show, sponsored by the Land Rover Driving School, celebrates its 25th Anniversary this weekend with events slated Friday through Sunday, June 10 to 12, at the Dorr Farm off Route 30 in Manchester. One of the premier car shows in the region, the event kicks off with an early bird flea market from noon to 6 p.m. on Friday. This year, organizers are bringing back some popular events from years past. The “Back Seat Driver Competition� returns on Sunday at 10 a.m. Also on Sunday at 8 a.m., the Antique

Motorcycle Rally returns. A special spot on the car show field has been reserved for antique motorcycle enthusiasts to meet and display their cycles. Admission is $10 for this event. The Historical Society of Whitehall is seeking veterans from the Whitehall area to participate in an oral history program. The program is a joint project between the New York State Military Museum in Saratoga Springs and the Historical Society of Whitehall. The group is seeking veterans of all ages and all branches of service. Every veteran, whether they served in times of war or in peace; saw combat or served in a support roles, has a story to tell. We are especially eager to record the stories of World War II and Korean War veterans who are disappearing at an alarming rate. If you’ve driven down some of the area's back roads you may have noticed purple triangular boxes hanging from area trees. These aren’t the remains of an ill-fated kite flight gone wrong, but instead are traps used to track the progress of the Emerald Ash Borer. The U.S. Forest Service, in collaboration with state and local organizations in both New York and Vermont, is hoping to determine whether the destructive insect has spread into the local region. The traps are made of corrugated plastic and contain an Ash like oil that attracts the bug and a sticky nontoxic glue that keeps them in the traps. Research suggests that the traps purple color attracts insects. According to Ethan Ready, Public Affairs Officer for the Green Mountain and Finger Lakes branch of the U.S. Forest Service, larvae of the Emerald Ash Borer feed on the inner bark material of Ash trees disrupting the flow of water and nutrients up and down the trees trunk. The results are deadly. “The kill rate is 100% within five years,� Ready said. “They infest all five ash tree species.� The insects, which are dark metallic green in color and about one half inch long and one eighth of an inch wide, are native to Asia. Before June of 2002, the insect had never been found in North America. The bugs were first discovered near Detroit and experts believe they likely arrived in the United States on or in solid wood packing material. Although the insect is fully capable of flight, scientists believe many infestations start-

ed when people moved infested ash nursery trees, logs or firewood into un-infested areas. The Emerald Ash Borer is one of the primary reasons why many campgrounds ban campers from bringing their own wood into public campgrounds. The insect, which has spread to 14 states in the Midwest and Northeast, including parts of New York as well as two Canadian Provinces, has not been found locally, but scientists are worried that it’s only a matter of time. “We haven’t seen populations in the Green Mountain National Forest, but we’re anxious,� Ready said. “Its’ kill rate underscores the importance of early detection.� Once the insects infect an area, the canopy of infested trees begins to thin above the trunk and other major branches. One third to one half of the branches may die in the first year and much of the canopy will be dead within two years. When populations are high, small trees have been known to die in as little as one or two years and large trees in three or four years. Ready said the traps have been hung in or near high use recreation areas. Locally traps can be seen on County Routes 12 and 18 near the Granville-Whitehall border and another on Upper Turnpike Road. To date scientists have yet to determine if the insects have a natural predator and quarantines remain the most effective way to prevent the transport of forest materials that would start new infestations. “If people are mindful of the problem, they make think twice about carrying wood into different areas,� Ready said.

Granville firefighters ready for annual carnival By Matthew Rice

The Granville Fireman’s Carnival will provide evenings of old fashioned summer fun starting June 16 at 6 p.m. and continues through Saturday, June 18. The final night of the carnival features an evening parade through the streets of the village, live music and ends with a fireworks show. “We’re hoping everyone will come out and join us and have a good time,� treasurer and carnival co-chair Dan Roberts said. The summer carnival is a major fundraiser for the Granville Hook & Ladder Fire Company.

The midway will be rumbling with kids screaming on the rides as the summer scents of cotton candy, fried dough and hamburgers fill the air for three short days. Festivities will continue until about 11p.m. each night. The fireman’s carnival starts June 16 with Sunday, June 19, as a rain date for the parade and fireworks if Saturday is a wash out. Fireworks will light up the Granville night sky Saturday starting about 10:45 p.m. The fire fighters are still seeking musical acts for Thursday and Friday night. Interested bands should call the firehouse at 642-2401 or 642-2320 as soon as possible. Each act is asked to play for about

three hours during the time the midway is open, Roberts said. Capping off the musical performances Saturday will be local act ‘Kissmummy.’ The parade lines up at 4 p.m. Saturday, June 18 and steps off promptly at 5 p.m., returning to the carnival grounds for the continuation of the carnival. Firefighters seek floats and entrants for the parade. “All are welcome,� Roberts said. Kids interested in joining in the parade can decorate their bikes to ride along. Local organizations will be approached and asked if they would like to enter a float in the parade as well, Roberts said.

The parade will leave the carnival lot on Park Street and proceed up to Church Street to Main Street and back on Potter Avenue and back to the carnival lot off East Potter Avenue for the kickoff of the final night of summer fun. The midway, provided again by Family Fun Amusements, will open each night of the carnival at 6 p.m. and run until 11 p.m. For those who can’t get enough of the rides, each night of the carnival will be wristband night. The summer fireman’s carnival was brought back by the Hook & Ladder Company in 2009 after the joint carnival with all of the fire companies in the village halted in 2007.

Green Mountain receives $100,000 grant from Jane's Trust The Green Mountain College Farm & Food Project has been awarded $100,000 from Jane’s Trust to research the market potential for flash-frozen products, using a mobile flash-freeze unit provided to the College and several regional collaborators by the Vermont Agency of Agriculture. Last June, the Farm & Food Project was granted use of the flash-freeze unit for three growing seasons in order to pilot flash-freezing of products for institutional and food pantry

use. Flash-freeze units are expected to increase the ability of farmers to market seasonal products throughout the year. The College is currently using the unit for research and education, in conjunction with the Farm & Food Project’s new “Community Food Lab,� a commercial kitchen facility on campus dedicated to teaching and research. With the new funding from Jane’s Trust, the College will expand the goals and use of the flash-freeze project, working in

close collaboration with partners including the Rutland Area Farm and Food Link (RAFFL), the PoultneyMettowee Conservation District, and UVM Extension. The grant will fund a “flashfreeze specialist� position to transport the mobile flashfreeze unit to farms in Rutland County to process “gleaned� products, test flash-frozen products for use in schools, hospitals, senior centers, and the charitable food system, and develop market opportunities at
