Lynch named head basketball coach at CSJ The new head women’s basketball coach at the College of St. Joseph in Rutland has a strong local connection. Shane Lynch, a 2003 graduate of Poultney High School who lives in Granville was recently hired to coach and to serve as the school’s Coordinator of Communications. While at Poultney, he was a three-time letter winner in football and basketball. Lynch, who graduated from Vermont Technical College in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management, brings with him several years of coaching experience. He was assistant basketball coach at Central Maine Community College before filling the same role at VTC. Those early experiences left an indelible mark on his approach to coaching. “My coaching philosophies
come from my two coaching mentors, John Dyer and Dave Gonyea who taught me how to run a basketball program the ‘right way’,” Lynch said. “I stress graduation rates and community and campus service over basketball. I would rather a player get a 4.0 in the classroom than 40 points in a game. I feel that a basketball team needs to have a family atmosphere. Our players are playing with teammates that will be lifelong friends. The four years that a player spends in college is priceless.” On the court, Lynch plans to implement an up-tempo, hard defending style. He believes that a team that effectively utilizes the fast break and plays with intensity on the defensive end of the floor will be able to compete with any opponent. You can also expect his players to make the extra pass.
“I encourage the pass first, shoot second mentality. If nothing else, it promotes teamwork,” Lynch said, That doesn’t mean, however, he won’t encourage players to take the shot when it’s available. “I would rather our player’s take an open 15 foot jump shot that work the ball for a contested 10 foot shot. When they are open, I want them to shoot the ball.” Some of his earliest childhood memories are of watching games at CSJ with his father. “I hope that our program will be fun to watch and can give our players and fans memorable experiences.” The Saints play a 30 plus game schedule that takes them from New York to Maine. They open the season at home against NHTI at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 15.
Wells Historical Society to meet Wednesday The Wells Historical Society’s August Meeting will be held at 6 p.m., Wednesday, August 3 at the Modern Woodmen hall in Wells. for new officers will be held after dinner. Updates on Wells 250 events as well as new photos and Wells history will be presented. Annual dues will be collected at this meeting. The highlight of the evening will be a presentation by Neil Garner about the history of early radio in America. He will
have photos and artifacts to illustrate his talk. Guests are welcome to all of our meetings. We encourage you to share any information you may have about Wells in pictures, diaries, articles, stories so that the history of our little town will not be lost.

Happy Birthday Hazel Anderson! By Helen Macura
Saturday, July 23rd, a card shower was held at the Modern Woodmen of American building in Wells for Hazel Anderson who will be 90 years old on July 27. The Hall was festively decorated with many balloons and more welcoming guests to the party. Hazel looked absolutely radiant, wearing a corsage on her wriest, as she greeted the well-wishers. There were many friends and neighbors – also, she has many relatives with small children having a gay time of their own. Like all big parties, lots of food including Hazel’s macaroni and shrimp salad and her popular sour crème coffee cake. There were two large decorated birthday cakes and more desserts. Guests came and went throughout the afternoon. We all wish Hazel many more healthy and happy birthdays. You never can tell Hazel – you may break the record and pass the 110!!
Besides all the new activities, the carnival will feature many of the same attraction that has made it so successful in the past. There will be an assortment of carnival games, like the always-popular dime toss, and a deejay will be spinning music throughout the event’s.. There will also be the usual wide variety of food choices.

Remembrances
By Twig Canfield
Dr. Clifford Smith It’s back in the 1960’s and your football team is loaded with good running back and receivers. Your defense is looking better than the good one from last year, but whose gonna be your quarterback? Who is going to engineer this runaway train? Ok, he’s gotta be athletic, he’s gotta be smart, and he’s
gotta be able to follow instructions. Enter Cliff Smith. He not only filled the gap, he made it work like clockwork all the way through that championship season. Cliff went on to UVM and kept pursuing his dream through the medical school. He came out as a heart doctor with
a very successful career in Rutland connected with Rutland Regional Medical Center. You’d meet him on the street, same old Cliff, a little bit reserved (almost shy) until you got him chattering and then a great visit. May God be with you, Cliff Smith.

Reggie Goddard Reggie was a truck driver for Bob Wood, who operated out of one of those thin high garages next to the old B & B Restaurant in Bomoseen. Mr. Wood tired of the business and offered Reggie a deal he could not refuse. As soon as the name Goddard went on the building and the trucks, things began to change. Next he landed a contract
with the Hood Company out of Boston and he grew and grew. Finally, he moved from that crowded little space to the huge area just over the hill on the right coming from the corners towards Castleton. Reggie taught his men to be representatives of the company and its good name with their clean appearance in uniform
and the buff and polish look of their truck, as well as their attitude and politeness on the road. Whenever or wherever you saw Reggie, he was the perfect example to his men – never a hair out of place and the vehicle he was driving was all but spit shined. Reggie Goddard – Class-A, all the way.
Jim Carmody Back in the early 1960’s I was selling ads for my dad’s paper and one of my favorite stops was Wescott’s garage in East Poultney. In the back shop I would go to visit Ray Burke and there was a great bunch of mechanics out there – Leo Loomis, a couple of McClullen’s (the old boy could tune a car by ear, he’d
been doing it so long), and a big ole character named Carmody. Jim loved to watch the horses and couldn’t wait for the track at Saratoga to open up. I always thought he should have been a part of the TV show – “The M’Coys” with his soft and easy way of talk and his slow and easy shuffle of a walk. Well, it’s years later (1980’s)
and I’m down selling ads for the Promoter and he’s telling the new guys – Why he used to be down here selling ads for his dad when he was 12. I never got to thank him for making me a “Living Legend” because I was actually 19 years old but I guess he never saw me drive in or out. May God be with you, Jim. Have a care.

National Night Out in Fair Haven Busy days on the local links National Night Out has come around again. It will take place on August 2 in the Fair Haven Park from 5:30-8:30 p.m. We share the experience then with people all over America. It is a night of fun, free food, lots of activities of all kinds, entertainment, music and dancing and surprise gifts but also more than that. It is a night when we remind everyone of the dangers of substance abuse and crime. Many organizations are represented. There are those interested in preventing substance abuse such as Rutland Area Preventive Coalition, Vermont Department of Health, Fair Haven Fitness, Fair Haven Recreation Department, Headstart and Castleton Preschool, 4H, Boy Scouts, Mentor Connector and Foster
Parents, and those involved in treatment such as the Rutland County Sheriff ’s Office, Rutland County Diversion Programs Inc., Rutland Mental Health, Rutland Regional Medical Center all working to make our communities safer and healthier. The public is encouraged through an activity called Infohunt to get information about these organizations and with a stamped card participate in a drawing for prizes. This is a community evening with the Fair Haven Police, Fire Department, and Rescue Squad on hand. The Town Public Works Department and Fair Haven High School have contributed services. The new Slate Valley Teen Center has volunteered help toward a successful evening., our ninth National Night Out.
Summer is here! Lake St. Catherine is buzzing with boaters, skiers, fishermen, swimmers and walkers. The old course is back and with the aid of Patriot’s Day and assorted other deals the players beginning to enjoy the vistas that only the ‘Lake’ can give. Also, the greens are starting to run and as my ‘patient partner’ always tells me” remember, this will break towards the lake.” Well, now that we have settled that problem, lets get to some golf news. Last weekend, the Couples Championship hit the links and some 18 teams teed it up for First Flight and Second Flight honors. In the First Flight, the winners were Pat and Mo Quinn and Gary and Nancy Jones. With a 57, followed by Bob Frieden, Cheryl Haggerty, Chris Fatone and Jim Toomey at 60 and Travis Beayon, and Brittany, John and Cherie St. Clair at 63. That 57 was absolutely brilliant ! In the Second Flight. Kim and Dan Jones and Dave and Sherri Cote won at 65, followed by Vince Sparkman, Laura Edwards and Helmut and Rosio Woerner at 68, and Matt and Sarah Haley and Scott and Martha Beayon at 69. Travis Beayon was closest to the pin on the eighth hole. A great spread followed in our new Fairways Restaurant. A wonderful day of golf at The Lake. Always remember, that when you show up, “You’re already a winner.”

DeCandia about golf, we have been moving along nicely. As usual, some of the newer kids are trying to figure me out.”Is this guy for real or what ?” However, as I quoted from Henry Adams, “Teachers touch the future, they never know where their influence will end!” So, I have time on my side. I received some beautiful news this past week. One of my boys, Garrett Brown, a student rep of Boys’ State, is touring Italy, France and England with the People to People organization as a US StudentAmbassador. What a thrill as well as a honor for all of us, especially Mr. and Mrs. Dan Brown and Marissa; also a junior clinic participant. Garrett has been to Rome, the Vatican, toured Florence and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. He has viewed Paris from the Eiffel Tower and spent 3 days with a French family to experience French culture and life! sands of American men are buried. Also, he witnessed the changing of the Guard Ceremony at Buckingham Palace and will attend a parliamentary briefing wit a British member of Parliament as a guide! We are proud of one of our guys -- Garrett Brown ! As if this was more than enough, I was treated to one of those rare moments that the Good Lord allows us to be part of. During the Wednesday group, as Matt Rice, Sentinel camera man was taking shots of our session, I noticed one of my boys staring, almost transfixed, into the sky. I ambled over and watched him. He continued to stare at the sky and then, eyes glistening, he softly said. “That was the best shot I have ever hit in my life!” I welled up and touched his shoulder, quietly saying:”You did it, you have it in you to repeat that shot.” These moments have to be shared and I will never get tired of helping “your children” keep it- OUT OF THE ROUGH !
