Food is available all day long, provided by the Poultney Snowmobile Club and the East Poultney Store; new this year is the Vermont Bean Crafters. Join Meredith Roberts Rehbach at 10 a.m. for “A Taste of Welsh, an introduction and celebration of the Welsh language. Benson Continued from front page Janssen said. Every year local residents create displays and sculptures out of burdocks which are shown off during the parade. Previous sculptures have included burdock ballerinas, burdock clothing and a replica of the Lake Champlain monster. “It’s a hoot. We seem to have a never ending supply of burdocks in Benson, Janssen said. All those sculptures and displays are evaluated by a panel of judges and awards are presented in several categories: tallest, most creative, biggest burdock ball and most themerelated. The judging panel tends to consist of summer residents so there aren’t any perceived biases and there’s been some speculation that Representative Peter Welch may even judge some of the entries, Janssen said. All burdock entries are due at the town offices by 9 a.m. And for the first time in several years, there may even be

As a focus of East Poultney Day, which dates back to 1935, the Historical Society offers an open house in each of these three fascinating museums: The 1791 restored Union Academy schoolhouse, the second oldest in Vermont, displays its quill pens, slate boards, and antique desks, just as it looked 150 years ago.. The 19th century Melodeon Factory houses much of the Society’s collection of period clothing, antique wagons, household utensils, and of course, melodeons. An 1896 Victorian schoolhouse houses the rest of the historic collection. No celebration is complete without music and dance. Throughout the day, musical performances by local musicians will include Paul Opel of Green Mountain College play-

ing one of the melodeons produced in Poultney’s Melodeon Factory and a concert by Natalia Czar on the Celtic harp. Additional musical fun will be provided by the Spruce Knob Uprising. The combined Poultney and Granville Town Bands will perform a concert to complete the day’s festivities. At 3 p.m., the annual raffle will award the dozens of items donated by local businesses and artists, and will feature three grand prizes: an original oil painting by Marilyn Parker, an art print by Peter Huntoon and a photograph by Alan Nyiri. “This particular East Poultney Day is going to be very, very special. We are working on the programming making it full of so many things that we have never had before, Vreeland said.

burdock royalty marching in the parade. “Rumor has it that there may be a burdock king and queen. No one has volunteered for the position in several years but I understand some people have said they were willing to do it this year, Janssen said. After the parade, patrons may want to consider heading over to the Benson Municipal Volunteer Fire Department for their annual barbecue. Considered by some to be the centerpiece of the event, the Fireman’s Barbecue will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal includes ham, roast beef, potatoes, baked beans, corn, coleslaw and dessert. “The best part is the homemade pies. Everyone in the community makes a pie and donates them for the barbecue, Janssen said. Tickets for the barbecue cost $9 for adults and $5 for kids. Another popular activity is the VPTA Garden Tractor and ATV pulls which begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Butler Lussier Track. There’s also plenty of shopping opportunities. The library

will host their annual book sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the church and town-wide tag sales will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Other activities include a dog agility show at 11 a.m. on the lawn behind the cement pad between the town office and community hall and a magic show at 1 p.m. in the same location. The Adirondack Drill Team Equestrian Show will be held at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. at Kellogg’s, across the street from The Wheel Inn. There will be a Basket Raffle at the fire house to benefit the Benson Eighth grade class and face painting, vendors and children’s activities will be held throughout the day. And new this year, patrons will be able to purchase commemorative t-shirts with the year of the event printed on them. “Everyone involved has done a really great job. It’s going to be a lot of fun, Janssen said. To learn more about the event, check on their Facebook page.

Wells carnival starts Wednesday By Matthew Rice Over the four days of the Wells Carnival Aug. 17-20 revelers will have a chance to take in everything from an antique tractor pull, a parade, a midway with rides and live entertainment along with plenty of great summer fun food. “People come out for the family fun and have a good time, seeing friends and neighbors,” organizer Brad Saunders said. The annual carnival is a fundraiser to help out the Wells community while having some good old fashioned family fun. The kids can hop on the rides and still have time to grab some fried dough or a hot dog and enjoy the warm summer air. “It’s to raise money for different things that go on in the community from scholarships to helping people in the community,” Saunders said. The annual event has been going for about 73 or 74 years, Saunders said. This carnival has become as much a part of the summer as mosquitoes and sunshine since its start in 1938 or so. The carnival will go on rain or shine and admission is free. The gates open at 6 p.m. except for Saturday, when the festivities kick off at 2 p.m. Bingo will be held Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The $20 wristband will allow total access to all of the rides all night long and offers parents a bargain which can help out when fun money is limited. Entertainment is the name of the game each night as the carnival kicks off Aug. 17 Red Hot Rider with returning favorites Mark LeGrand and the Lovesick Bandits providing the musical backdrop for the evening. Shifting gears the carnival provides something for the kids with the Total Entertainment all age dance party Thursday night. Freedom Hawk will anchor Friday night and the Sweetwater will cap off the carnival Saturday. The tradition of the money raffle returns with the Wednesday night prize of $50; Thursday night’s $100; Friday night’s $150 and Saturday’s $200. Each drawing takes place at 10 p.m. The big favorite of carnival patrons and the reason to come to the carnival hungry is the outstanding carnival food. “The food booth, (patrons) they love the food from home made French fries to fried dough and fried clams – all of that good stuff,” Saunders said.

POULTNEY VALLEY STORAGE

The cake booth returns for another year and the organizers are hoping to see volunteers in the neighboring town of Pawlet, West Pawlet and Poultney will chip in and donate cakes for the booth, Saunders said. Leading off the day Saturday will be the annual antique tractor pull beginning at 10 a.m. and leading up to the parade. The parade will have the theme of the 250th anniversary of Wells and the State of Vermont. Cash prizes will be given out for the best floats and anyone who chooses to can enter, in categories from floats, cars, fire departments and Best Overall Appearance with a first, second and third place prize awarded in each, organizers said. Line up will once again be at the Bates Farms along Route 30 just north of the carnival grounds at noon, with marchers stepping off at 1 p.m. For more information about the carnival, call: Brad Saunders at 518-506-9511; the tractor pull, Jerry Austin at 802-645-1951 or Todd Fenton for the parade at 802-645-9522.

Discover the architectural treasures of Castleton The architectural treasures of Castleton will be on full display during the annual Castleton Colonial Day House Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20. The Castleton Woman’s Club will sponsor a self-guided tour of 19 historically significant sites in and around the community of Castleton, including eight private homes, historic sites and galleries. Castleton Colonial Day is one of the oldest continuously running events in the area, having been held since the 1930’s. The village boasts an array of Federal and Greek revival style homes and public buildings that span 200 years of architectural heritage. The best way to enjoy the tour is in a pair of tennis shoes.

Organizers encourage participants to start at one end of town and take in the historic sites on Main Street before traveling to the outlying sites by car. Featured prominently throughout the tour is the work of master builder Thomas Royal Dake. “We tried to incorporate as many Thomas Dake building features in this year’s tour as we could,” Castleton Women’s Club member Joan Chader said. Several of the homes featured on the tour were built by Dake in the second and third decades of the 19th century. One of those homes is the Dake/Murphy House which features an airy, curving staircase, a style for which Dake was well known. The Granger/Reinfurt house,

built in 1810, will be open for the first time in 11 years and will showcase another handcrafted Dake staircase. The Langdon/Hitchcock house features a trio of carved pine arches under a vaulted ceiling and has been a popular stop along the tour. It also is one of only a few homes in Vermont with a two-story room width bay window. Open for the first time this year is the Gilroy/Rehlen house entry hall. Built in 1818, the building was actually moved from its original location where the post office now sits. The hall and stairway are very similar to those of the Langdon/Hitchcock house. Also on the tour are the Skinner-Cresci brick house, built in 1832; the Ranson-Rehlen house, popularly referred to as “The Manse,” which features 17 Ionic columns, a curving Dake staircase and many decorative moldings. And the recently renovated D&H railroad station built in 1850. The Higley House, home of the Castleton Historical Society, will also be open and visitors can tour the exhibits, antique tools, carriage collection and period costume and hat displays. Guest will also be able to see the famous Blue Cat Quilt depicting historic landmarks in town. Perhaps the most popular stop along the tour is the Castleton Federated Church where guests can see the beautifully carved pulpit, another Dake

The church is also the place to be if you get hungry. They will host a ham dinner at 5 p.m. featuring a variety of cold salads, beverages and desert. The cost of the meal is $8 for adults and $5 for anyone 12 and under. The Castleton Library will also have food available, as they host an ice cream social from 2 to 4 p.m. Additional activities include a reenactment of a “day in camp” by members of the 53rd Regiment of Foot. Soldiers will be practicing drills and women will be cooking, baking and making butter. “The reenactment should be exciting. They are the same group that performs at the Hubbardton Battlefield,” Chader said.

The Hubbardton Battlefield is also included among the stops on this year’s tour and admission is free with your house tour ticket. Participants will also find demonstrations of chair caning, weaving, and quilting in homes along the tour and many homeowners will be dressed in period dress adding the historic appeal of the event. House tour tickets cost $20 for adults and $18 for seniors. A program with a map indicating the locations of stops on the tour is included with the purchase of an event ticket. Proceeds benefit the Castleton Women’s Club scholarship fund. For additional information, call 468-0011. “It should be a fun, great day,” Chader said.

St. Paul's Church hosting bag and rummage sale There will be a Bag and Rummage Sale at St. Paul’s Church in Wells, VT. on Sat. Aug. 13th. You can fill a bag with books, clothes, toys, and linens for only $3.00. The church usually only has two bag sales per year, but we are having an extra one in August so we can reduce our inventory of children’s clothing. This is a great opportunity to get some gently used back to school clothes for the youngsters.

CALENDAR ITEMS DEADLINE Friday at 10 a.m. is the deadline to submit items for the free calendar in the following week’s newspaper. Whenever possible, items should be submitted a week or more earlier than that to ensure timely publication.

Letters Thank you for making it a huge success! Pawlet Public Library’s Annual Book Sale defied all odds and raised $9,500 to support library programs. For the past year, our silent supporters have dropped book donations at Edi Mach’s Barn and library volunteers have continuously sorted, boxed, labeled and staged books year round. July 25 – 31 was a remarkable week. Volunteers hailing from Pawlet, North Pawlet, West Pawlet, Wells, Rupert, Dorset, Manchester, Poultney, Granville and Hampton rallied to help us. Oxbow Mountain 4-H Shooting Sports Club and local area youth turned out to move over 25,000 boxed books from Edie Mach’s barn to the Mettawee Community School in a phenomenal one hour and three minutes. Crescent Valley Homemakers baked beautiful treats and donated their proceeds to the library sale; RupertMettowee Valley 4-H Dairy Club cooked and served burgers and dogs and the 6th Grade Class of the Mettawee Community School cleaned up in a record 2 hours. For those of you who bought our books, raffle tickets and food; thanks and see you next year! Special recognition to Telescope Furniture, Green

Mountain Coffee Roasters, Vermont Country Store, Mettowee Mill Nursery, Barn Restaurant, Pawlet Potter, Mach’s Market, RK Miles, Dorset Inn, and J.K. Adams for great raffle and silent auction prizes. Through the generosity of Wells Country Store, Mrs. Murphy’s Donuts and Bagel Works; our breakfast offerings were spectacular. Hannaford, Rutland, Price Chopper, Manchester and Shaw’s in Manchester helped us feed our crew. Price Chopper in Granville, was not only generous in its financial support, but baked a dozen pizzas right on time and made fresh custom burgers for our grill. Lakes Region Free Press, the Granville Sentinel, Lakes Region Radio and Vermont News Guide, thank you for your coverage. Northshire Book Store, Mark Skinner Library, Kittay Public Library, Dorothy Canfield Fisher Library and Middletown Springs Public Library: we appreciate your support. Southern Vermont Sign Works: the banners you donated really worked. West Pawlet Volunteer Fire Department, we couldn’t do it without the use of your tables. Thanks to Nancy Mark, Rich Cleveland and Bill Wood of Mettawee Community

Antique postcard program in Castleton Charles Knight and his father Daniel have collected series “F postcards, mostly featuring Lake Bomoseen in its heyday, for years. Their postcard hunt began with the discovery that the Knight Cottage on Avalon Beach, “Reed’s LakeView Cottage (c. 1891) is numbered “61-F. Charles will give a presentation on the Golden Age of Lake Bomoseen postcards on Thursday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Castleton Community Center, just east of Castleton Corners. At the end of the program, Charles will donate this rare, unique collection to the Historical Society. We are hoping that owners of other “F series cards may come forward with donations to fill in the existing gaps. Join us for this handicapped accessible program, followed by refreshments. Anyone with questions can call Holly Hitchcock at 468-5105.

School for your boundless support and gracious use of the school. To Edi Mach, who loses more barn space each year to our book sorting and storing operation, we salute you! Volunteer time, energy and enthusiasm are the key to our success. In appreciation of our past, present and future volunteers, we are hosting a Pot Luck Picnic at Emerald Lake State Park on Thursday, August 11. Library Director, Beth Kashner reminds everyone that The Pawlet Public Library will “open at Emerald Lake starting at 10:00 am. The library building in Pawlet will be closed for the day. Admission to the park is $2 or free with the Green Mountain Seniors Passport. The Pot Luck Dinner starts at 6:00 pm at the Picnic Pavilion. We’ll bring the burgers and dogs; volunteers, families and friends of the library are asked to bring a dish to share and their own beverages. For further information, call the library at (802) 325- 3123 or Dolores at (802) 645-0109. With sincere thanks, Dolores Luebke, Chairman Pawlet Public Library Book Sale

Rupert "Old Home Day" Saturday Rupert will be alive with activity on Saturday, Aug. 13, as the town celebrates not only its traditional “Old Home Day,” but also the 250th anniversary of its founding. The Rupert 250 Committee has planned several additions to honor this special day. From 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Rupert Congregational Church, a quilt show will showcase many quilts, some antique and heirloom, alongside some newer and unique ones. Anyone wishing to display a quilt should call Helen Maikisch at 394-2407. The church will also host an exhibit of local arts and crafts. For more information on this, contact Anne Lourie at 394-7726. The Rupert Firemen will host a chicken barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the firehouse, with toe-tapping music provid-

ed by the Adirondack Fiddlers. At 1 p.m., special fun and games will be held for the kids. The Commemorative Program takes place at 2:30 p.m. on the carnival grounds. To honor the town’s 250th anniversary, the program will feature special speakers, the presentation of annual citizenship awards, and a short program of historical highlights. Following the program, enjoy music from the Curbstone Chorus, a men’s barbershop harmony group from Rutland. At 3:30 p.m., the Wild Country Cloggers will dance in the firehouse. Throughout the day, special 250th anniversary merchandise will be available for purchase, including t-shirts designed by Scott Lenhardt, keepsake calendars, pencils and commemorative programs. In

addition, there will be a one day only commemorative postal cancellation for sale, featuring a drawing by Rupert artist Donna Blomberg. Rupert’s parade will start promptly at 5:30 p.m. With a theme of “Rupert Then and Now,” the parade will have many floats and five additional bands this year. To enter a float, contact Nichole McKeighan at 394-2923. Coinciding with the anniversary celebration is the annual Fireman’s Carnival, which will be held on August 11, 12 and 13 with entertainment, food and games. Annual Tour de Farms coming soon Get ready to oil up the gears, strap on the helmet and stretch those legs (and stomach!), because the 4th Annual Tour de Farms is right around the corner, and advance registration has just opened. Rural Vermont, Addison County Relocalization Network and the Vermont Bicycle & Pedestrian Coalition again partner to host this scenic bike tour through the Champlain Valley on Sunday, September 18th 2011, starting and ending at the Shoreham Green in Addison County, VT. Staggered starts begin at 10:30 am. This year’s event is sponsored by Earl’s Cyclery & Fitness, Vermont Fresh Network, Long Trail Brewery, and American Flatbread of Middlebury, and is expected to draw close to 600 participants from all over Vermont and beyond. Riders will choose from routes of 10, 25 and 30 miles, all of which will pass a variety of family farms offering riders samples of their finest food and drink. Previous years’ samples have included quiche, salads, wine, turkey, yogurt, cookies, apple cider, and much more. Thanks to a new partnership with the Vermont Fresh Network, 2011 cyclists can expect to see a few local chefs cooking up samples that will feature additional Addison County producers. And for those cyclists on the 30 mile route who are hungry for lunch, the Northeast Organic Farming Association will be selling local pizza at the Orwell Green! The 2011 Tour de Farms’ seventeen participating farms include Doolittle Farm, Golden Russet Farm, B Vineyard & Shoreham Winery, Vermont Trade Winds, North Branch Farm & Gardens, Millbourne Farm, Champlain Orchards, Stonewood Farms, Lemon Fair Honey Works, Benjamin Brown, Neshobe Farm, Solar Haven Farm, Singing Cedars Farmstead, Danzahn Farm, Stoney Lonesome Farm, Metta Earth Institute, and Windfall Orchard. Cyclists are encouraged to

stick around after the Tour to enjoy Apple Fest on the Shoreham Green. The event will feature hot food for sale, live music, and a farmers’ market. Many of the Tour de Farms participating farmers will be selling their goods, and the Apple Fest will provide the perfect opportunity to stock up on winter meats, vegetables, and canned goods. There will be a limited number of vendor spots available on the Shoreham Green during Tour de Farms registration, 8 am – noon. Vendor space is $50 for nonprofits, and $150 for businesses. To volunteer or inquire about vendor space, contact shelby@ruralvermont.org or call (802) 223-7222. If you’re not interested in riding, but want to be involved, consider volunteering. Volunteers are needed to assist with various aspects of the

Tour de Farms, including registration, parking, farmer’s helpers, photography, crowd control, and ride marshalling. In return for a three-hour time commitment, volunteers will receive a free Tour de Farms t-shirt. Those who get in touch early are more likely to secure assignments of personal interest. Advance registration is open through September 12th at 5 pm at http://www.ruralvermont.org/events/tdf/, or registration materials can be obtained by calling Rural Vermont at (802) 223-7222. Those who register in advance will pay $25 for adults and $10 for kids 12 and under, which is a 50-percent savings over onsite registration fees on the day of the event! Kids in trailers and bike seats ride free and don’t need to be registered.

Big band sound returns to Fair Haven The big band sound of the “Moonlighters returns to Fair Haven for a 7:00 PM performance on Thursday, August 18. The Moonlighters is a big band with 15-16 members and has been performing together since 1994. The group has been a popular feature for dance and concert venues throughout the Upper and Lower Valleys of NH and VT, as well as central Vermont. The music of Glenn Miller, Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey, Duke Ellington and many others are featured in each performance by The Moonlighters. The band’s brass section consists of three trombones, three

trumpets and five to six saxophones. They also feature clarinets, a bass guitar, sometimes a rhythm guitar, keyboard and drums. Listeners will be transported back to an earlier time, when rhythms were easy to follow, the lyrics were simple and the melodies were lovely. Three vocalists, all with different styles, complete this exciting collection of talented musicians. The band was originally formed for the Hartford, Vt. 50th anniversary celebration of the end of World War II. Scott Lobdel said that the original group had so much fun playing for that event that they decided

to stay together. Throughout that time Janet Hawes has served as the band’s director. The Fair Haven Concerts in the Park series has experienced a resurgence of interest this year. Weekly crowds have been large and the concert organizers have added to the fun by sponsoring a 50/50 drawing, awarding free door prizes, and offering concessions including hot dogs, sodas, and popcorn. The cost of the performance is free and attendees are encouraged to bring their lawn chair or blanket. The rain site will be at the Fair Haven Baptist Church just across the street from the park.

Briefs Hubbardton Fire Dept. hosting chicken barbecue Saturday The Hubbardton Volunteer Fire Department will hold its annual chicken barbeque on Saturday, August 20 at Crystal Beach on Route 30 in Castleton. Each dinner includes half a

ue until 6 p.m. (or until sold out). Proceeds will support the HVFD in its mission to protect Hubbardton and the surrounding towns.

Slate Museum receives $25k grant to digitize collection The Slate Valley Museum has taken another step toward having its entire collection digitized and posted on the Internet. The Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded a matching grant of $25,400 to allow the museum to beginning taking digital pictures of its exhibits, documents and artifacts in advance of developing a complete web site for its collection. That would finish one of the museum’s “Full Collection and Digital Access Project.” “This is a continuation of a project we have already started,” said museum director Kate Weller. “We have gotten grants from them before to plan the process, and when we finish

this, we hope to get another grant to actually build the website.” The museum has already received more than $40,000 from the institute, which is the primary source of funding support for the nation’s 123,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. Weller said she is excited about the project because it will open access to the museum’s collection to people around the world. “We are thrilled that IMLS recognized the importance of this project and (is) excited to make it a reality,” Weller said. “This program will help SVM continue to offer the innovative educational initiatives it is known for.

Poultney Recrecation participants enjoy day of golf Participants in the Poultney Area Recreation Miniature Golf Program gathered at Cone’s Point last Friday for the last day of camp. The program, which includes several other sports as well as arts and crafts, has served children in the Lakes Region for more than two and half decades. During that time the program has grown to include more than 600 participants.

Fair Haven sports dates, practice times set With the start of the fall sports season just days away, anyone wishing to participate in athletics during the upcoming school year is reminded that an up-to-date physical is required to be on file with the school nurse and the activities department. All physicals will continue to be valid for one calendar year. The Vermont Department of Health suggests that all students in Vermont receive an annual “Well Child” exam, which will now also serve as the sports physical. It will be the responsibility of the student-athletes and their families to provide coaches or FHUHS administration with a copy of the physical exam prior to the first practice for the fall season. Failure to do so will prevent the student-athlete from participation, unless we have a record of a valid physical (within the past calendar year) on file at the high school. New this year is Vermont’s

School Sports Concussion Law, which will require parents and athletes to sign off that they have received the information developed pursuant to concussions in youth sports and FHUHS will provide this information annually to each youth athlete and the athlete’s parents or guardians. FHUHS will continue to utilize the ImPACT Concussion Recognition Program as we have the four previous years, and we believe our concussion awareness program is ahead of many other schools. All participants are reminded that a signed permission form, a signed concussion form and a current physical must be on file at FHUHS in order to practice on the first day of the preseason.
