Castleton opens up its doors Colonial Day House tour features work of 18th century builder Thomas Dake
Washington County Fair starts Monday Rides, entertainment, food, agricultural displays offer fun for entire family The sun is setting fast on this year’s summer season. The worst of the heat seems to be behind us, football practice has started, retail stores have rolled out their fall lines, and the school year is rapidly approaching. But before we lament then end of summer, there’s a little something called the Washington County Fair next week in neighboring New York State.
An agricultural tradition for 121 years, the Washington County Fair returns to the venerable fairgrounds in Greenwich from Aug. 22 through 28. The fair features a bevy of agricultural exhibits, hundreds of displays, local entertainers, a rodeo, amusement rides and games, 200 vendors, and all sort of delectable food. But for most, nothing beats the pure excitement and adrenaline of the motor sports events.
“People really look forward to all the motor sport events,” Fair Manager Mark St. Jacques said. Spectators won’t have to wait long as the Demolition Derby kicks of a week of motor sport events at 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22. The derby will feature five heats of 14 cars, as well one “Powder Puff ” heat featuring female participants only.
The fun continues at the Wells carnival through Saturday Few events capture summer fun the way the long-standing traditional country carnivals can and the Wells Carnival continues to uphold its fine tradition through Saturday.
The carnival continues until Aug. 20 providing revelers will have a chance to take in everything from an antique tractor pull, a parade, a midway with rides and live entertainment along with plenty of great summer fun food. “People come out for the family fun and
have a good time, seeing friends and neighbors,” organizer Brad Saunders said. The annual carnival is a fundraiser to help out the Wells community while having some good old fashioned family fun. The

Fair The nostalgic will want to wake early on Wednesday as the Antique Tractor Pulls are scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Later in the day, it’s the diesel trucks turn at 6 p.m. Thursday will feature the Garden Tractor Pulls and Truck Pulls at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. The real action begins on Saturday with the Sanctioned Tractor Pulls at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 and the Big Rig Truck Pulls at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. Of course the fair features plenty of other entertainment as well, including some oldies but goodies. “We’ve brought back many of the same entertainers from previous years. People really seem to enjoy them,” explained St. Jacques. “They may be the same entertainers, but they bring back new shows every year.” Some of the performers who will return to the fair this year include The Elderly Brothers, Smokey Green,
Harold Ford and The Cash Band, the Adirondack Fiddlers, and True Grass, as well as new performers, The Dry Town Drifters and Bobby Dick who will be playing solo. Other popular entertainment that returns for 2011 include the Hot Dog Pig Races, Bob Smith and Reindeer, Buffalo Barfield’s Old-Time County Music Show, and Puddles the Clown. The fair will also feature several new entertainers. “Two of the newest entertainers are ‘Bounce & Ooo La, La’ and ‘Hansen’s Spectacular’,” St. Jacques said. There will also be a children’s rodeo to compliment the highly popular Rodeo. “The folks from Painted Pony are excited to bring back an even better rodeo this year,” said St. Jacques. Families will once again have the opportunity to get up close and personal with “a whole menageries of animals” in the Farm Land Barn. The fair will feature a number of judged shows and 4H presentations of farm animals all week. In fact, this year features more animals than last year’s
fair. “The number of entries is way up this year. The kids work hard all year to show these animals. It’s really what the fair is all about,” St Jacques said. Of course, most families will undoubtedly make it to the mid-way where children will be attracted by the bright lights of several dozen amusement rides. Some of the rides are specifically aimed at children and their families “We average between 38 and 40 rides each year,” St. Jacques said. “We’ve got something for everyone,” added Dominic Vivona, controller for Amusements of America. Returning this year is the Veritgo, a tower swing that hangs nearly 60 feet in the air. Familiar favorites like the Tornado, the Tilt-a-Whirl, and the Carousel will return to. Since the fair is supposed to be family friendly, Amusements of America will bring a number of rides for younger kids as well. “We tend to focus on smaller rides for the younger kids,” St. Jacques said. One thing that has not
changed is the rates of admission. “All the prices are the same. We are trying to keep it an affordable family fair,” said St. Jacques. Admission to the fair costs $10 for adults and is free for children 14 and under. Parking remains free and there is handicapped parking near the gates and courtesy rides will be offered to those who have a difficult time walking. Special promotions include Carnival Fun Day on Tuesday, Aug. 23 when kids have full access to all the rides for only $20; Senior Citizen Day on Wednesday, Aug. 24 where admission for adults ages 62 and older costs only $5;. Children’s Day is Thursday, Aug. 25 when all kids are free; and Family Fun Day on Sunday, Aug. 28 when children will once again have the chance to ride all the amusements they can handle for $20. The fair officially opens at 5 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 22 and 9 a.m. the rest of the week. “It’s a great chance for people to get together, see each other and catch up,” St. Jacques said, “ as well as meet new people.”
Chicken BBQ also on tap The Ladies Aid of the Wells United Methodist Church will be presenting a chicken barbecue following the MWA Parade on Saturday, Aug.20. This will be served in the main building of the Modern Woodman Hall. Serving will begin at 4 p.m. with a half of a barbecue chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, corn on the cob, tuna and pea macaroni salad, with dinner rolls. In addition, there will be drinks and home baked brownies will be out for dessert. The cost will be $11 for adults, $5 for ages 5 – 12, and children under five will be free. Please come and enjoy the parade, carnival with its matinee prices, and the chicken barbeque for a day full of fun and enjoyment.

kids can hop on the rides and still have time to grab some fried dough or a hot dog and enjoy the warm summer air. “It’s to raise money for different things that go on in the community from scholarships to helping people in the community,” Saunders said. The annual event has been going for about 73 or 74 years, Saunders said. This carnival has become as much a part of the summer as mosquitoes and sunshine since its start in 1938 or so. The carnival will go on rain or shine and admission is free. The gates open at 6 p.m. except for Saturday, when the festivities kick off at 2 p.m. Bingo will be held today and Saturday. The $20 wristband will allow total access to all of the rides all night long and offers parents a bargain which can help out when fun money is limited. Entertainment is the name of the game each night as the carnival continues tonight. Freedom Hawk will anchor Friday night and Sweetwater will cap off the carnival
leading to the parade at 1 p.m. The parade will have the theme of the 250th anniversary of Wells and the State of Vermont. Cash prizes will be given out for the best floats and anyone who chooses to can enter, in categories from floats, cars, fire departments and Best Overall Appearance with a first, second and third place prize awarded in each, organizers said. Line up will once again be at the Bates Farms along Route 30 just north of the carnival grounds at noon, with marchers stepping off at 1 p.m. For more information about the carnival, call: Brad Saunders at 518-506-9511; the tractor pull, Jerry Austin at 802645-1951 or Todd Fenton for the parade at 802-645-9522.

Saturday. The tradition of the money raffle returns with Friday night’s prize $150 and Saturday’s $200. Drawings are at 10 p.m. The big favorite of carnival patrons and the reason to come to the carnival hungry is the outstanding carnival food. “The food booth, (patrons) they love the food from home made French fries to fried dough and fried clams – all of that good stuff,” Saunders said. The cake booth returns for another year and the organizers are hoping to see volunteers in the neighboring town of Pawlet, West Pawlet and Poultney will chip in and donate cakes for the booth, Saunders said. Leading off the day Saturday will be the annual antique tractor pull beginning at 10 a.m. and

Many of the houses he built feature airy, curving staircases and he made use of many arches and vaults in his work. The Dake-Murphy house, which Dake built for himself and his wife, has some of these features. It features his first curving staircase, a characteristic for which he became renowned. The RansonRehlen and Granger-Reinfurt homes all share Dake staircases. His work will also be on display in the LandgonHitchcock house which features a two-story, room-width bay window flanking the central hall. But perhaps his most well-known work is the hand-carved pulpit in the Castleton Federate Church, considered by many to be his masterpiece. All told there are 19 sites on this year’s tour, including 8 homes and the Hubbardton Battlefield who offers free admission for anyone who purchases a House Tour ticket. Besides the opportunity to enjoy Dake’s architecture, the tour allows participants a chance to step back in time. The hosts at many of the sites will be dressed in period attire and at several homes there will be demonstrations of everyday 19th century activities. For instance there will be weaving demonstrations at the Skinner-Cresci House, organ music at the Federated Church and chair caning at the Higley House.

In fact, the Higley House is a hotbed of activity. Home of the Castleton Historical Society, the house will feature exhibits of antique tools, a carriage collection, period costumes and a hat display. “The Blue Cat Quilt will also be on display,” said Chader. Something that is new this year is a historical reenactment by members of the 53rd Regiment of Foot. The groups will demonstrate open fire cooking and perform different drills. “The reenactment should be exciting. They are the same group that performs at the Hubbardton Battlefield,” Chader said. Singer-songwriter Robert Wuagneaux, who lives locally, is also expected to perform. The church is another busy place to be. At the burial ground outside the church, there will be self-guided tours of the cemetery and the important people who are buried there. The church will also host a ham dinner at 5 p.m. The menu will include a variety of cold salads, beverages and desert. The cost of the meal is $8 for adults and $5 for anyone 12 and under. For those who prefer to have dessert before dinner, the Castleton Library will have an ice cream social from 2 to 4 p.m. and proceeds will benefit the library. House tour tickets cost $20 for adults and $18 for seniors. A program with a map indicating the locations of stops on the tour is included with the purchase of an event ticket. Proceeds benefit the Castleton Women’s Club scholarship fund.

Country music festival in Granville By Matthew Rice The Granville Hook & Ladder Fire Company will host a weekend of country music fun starting Friday with the inaugural “First Annual Country Music Jamboree” on Aug. 19, 20 and 21. Hook and Ladder treasurer Dan Roberts said the music will be all country, everything from old timey country and square dance country to current popular country music along with a healthy dose of the blues thrown in for good measure. Gate fees to walk in are $5 per person Friday and Sunday and $10 per person Saturday. Hours are 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Children under the age of 12 get in free. The event will take place at the carnival grounds off of East Potter Avenue. Bands include, but are not limited to: Honky Tonk Express, Black River Canyon Band, Hand Picked Band and Old Time Country. Organizers said the weekend will feature as many as 18 different bands each playing hour-plus sets.
The wrinkle organizers are offering is camping. Tent, trailer or motor home camping will be available at the site with space for camping trailers and two people costing $40 for the weekend, a fee that includes the gate costs. Tent sites for two people will be $35 for the weekend including camping and admission to the jamboree. Roberts said a former member George Stoddard is a part of the Northeast Association of Country Western Entertainers who put on regular fundraising jamborees around the region. “They lost the place they used to play, someone sold it and they were looking for another place,” Roberts said. The two men got together to begin organizing the jamboree after deciding Granville might be a good place to start up a new music festival. The entire weekend of music is expected to feature as many as 18 all volunteer bands who regularly play jamboree fundraisers like this one. “It the first one and we’re hoping it goes well, we’d like to make this an annual thing,” Roberts said.
Bands will perform from the carnival grounds band stand. Patrons are advised they need to bring their own chairs to the event for the open seating that would typically be full of a carnival midway during the fireman’s carnival. Roberts said the fire company’s food booths will be open and a couple of games booths as well. The event will have a bar, but Roberts advised there will be restrictions on the site of consumption. A fenced-in area around the carnival casino will contain the bar and the only space on the grounds where drinking will be allowed. No alcohol containers will be allowed outside of the area. For those who bring their dancing shoes, a tent will be put up and under that tent will be a dance floor. Several of the bands come with their own callers making square dancing a distinct possibility. Proceeds from the event will go to the Hooks. “We’re hoping people will come and check it out, I think they’ll like what they hear; you’ll definitely have a good time,” Roberts said.

The facility, celebrating 50 years of the manufacture of adhesive tape and other products in town, will hold an open house, beginning at 9 a.m., Saturday, August 27. “This is our way of opening up our doors and showing our families, our friends and the community what we do here,” said Stewart B. Dittmeier, a second-generation Saint-Gobain employee from Wells, Vt., who is part of a committee that has spent much of the summer planning the event. Tours of the 132,000-square

Back in the 1950’s dairy farming was cranking. There were good size farms all the way up Rte. 22A and you could find smaller ones on almost every little back road. There were three places to get your equipment fixed – Hugh Young’s handled Allis Chalmer, Cliff Cooper had International Harvester and Harry Proctor had Massey-Ferguson. It was like the Ford/Chevy/Chrysler of tractors. Now if your dad used Massey, then it was usually a good bet that you would too. Now, these businesses worked the same way. As at least one of your boys would take over the family business. When Harry finally decided to retire, it was Charlie who took over using all of the tricks of the trade his dad had taught him. He was straight to the point with his answers, you know, like the old fashioned tractor salesman that he had become.
There was a group of sisters that grew up on a farm in East Poultney a few years ago. They were raised the “old school” way of life that offered: good clean living, hard work, respect for elders, great hand me down recipes and love for your neighbors. One of the sisters was in the other day to pay a bill. As I went to hug her, I heard a whisper “give me a hug; there aren’t enough to go around anymore.” Now with the passing of one

He ran a very successful operation and then all of a sudden it was not profitable business for the small farmer and they began to disappear. Charlie hung on for his good loyal customers until he had to go too. Not one to sit around, he took on the job of driving bus for the high school. He volunteered for the sports trips and began to form another legion of friends. The kids on the bus took to him as a “grandfather figure.” The bus would pull in and there would be these pauses at the wheel as each kid received their “good game” or words of advice. Now here is a gent who will truly be missed by all of us and especially the kids who rode those busses. May God bless you, Charlie Proctor, who really had a way with people. -- Twig Canfield
of the McIntyre sisters (Lillian) let this be a reminder to us all, that you are never too young or never too old to give a simple little thing like a hug to a person who is in need of one. When you see what it does to lift the spirit of that person, you will feel that same emotion flow through your whole body. Lillian Mead, may you find peace and happiness with your Jehovah. -- Twig Canfield
Now here’s a gent that we at the hardware store have been missing at the hardware store since he’s been laid up. He was always so polite – “Hey, young fella, you got time to give a hand” and always a “Thank you young fella” on the way out. It is such a pleasure to wait on a nice person like this because a lot of people are not at all like this. May God be with you. I’m sure gonna miss the ‘Thank you young fella’s.’ By Twig Canfield

For years this big rugged lad would trek the route from Wells to come to Poultney to pick up a few things and bend the ear of whoever was waiting. His favorite topic was how things have changed in his lifetime. It was not only prices, but tools, machinery and even our cash registers – remember the old clerk putting the figures on the long paper bag and quickly finding the total. Well, that has
been replaced by something called modern math and that is why you can go into a store and find a young person calling for the manager when the register fails to tell them what change to give. There you go John, we got that out there in the public arena. May God be with you, John Kascenska. -- Twig Canfield

Many thanks from local Girl Scouts and leaders To the Editor: I would like to thank all the Girl Scouts, volunteers and families of Girl Scouts as we move into our 100th membership year (Girl Scouting will be celebrating its 100th anniversary on March 12, 2012). This could not happen without the dedication of many amazing Girl Scout volunteers in our community. Because of Girl Scout volunteers, girls have been able to take action in our towns by planting flowers in local gardens; caroling with Girl Scouts in surrounding areas; marching in all sorts of parades to represent their troops; learning
how to make a Thanksgiving dinner using all local ingredients, and much more. As Girl Scouting moves into our next 100 years, we would like to thank the Lakes Region for supporting our girls by purchasing fall products (magazines, nuts and candy) and Girl Scout cookies. Because of your generosity, girls have been able to travel to the Museum of Science in Boston for overnight trips; explore the Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut; participate in Girl Scout Day at the Great Escape, and earn badges by engaging in physical activities such as gymnastics, snowshoeing and swimming.

Our new membership year is approaching and we are looking for new volunteers to make a difference in our community. We are always in need of troop leaders to work with girls in grades k-12, but we are also in need of community members to support our volunteers. There are currently volunteer positions in your community for a variety of positions, including recruiting girls & adults, accounting, gathering pictures and news for our council website and newsletter, mentoring new volunteers, and coordinating trainings. All adults (men and women) are welcome as volunteers in Girl Scouts - you only need to have the desire to make a difference in the lives of girls. If you would like more information on how to get involved, please contact our corporate office at 1-888-474-9686 or email info@girlscoutsgwm.org.
