Revving up for Vermont State Fair Happy Preparations are currently under way for this year’s state fair and organizers are promising that this year’s annual event will feature more free entertainment than any state fair in the Northeast. The Vermont State Fair will be held from Friday, Sept. 2 through Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Vermont State Fairgrounds in Rutland. The event showcases Vermont’s agricultural heritage and features a variety of entertainment ranging from amusement rides and iconic musicians to 4H shows and the state demolition derby, most of which are free with paid admission to the fair. “It’s what we’re all about this year, the economy isn’t that great, so people are looking for more bang for their buck,” fair manager Richard Rivers said. “We’ve had a great deal of luck with our free shows. According to Rivers, organizers have added eight new free shows to this year’s itinerary, meaning the fair will offer nearly two dozen free performances.

“The biggest and newest entertainment, and the one that has received the best response, is the Big Top Circus,” Rivers said. The 45 minute show is your typical cir-
cus experience with everything from clowns to acrobats and death-defying acts of horsemanship.
Still a full weekend left to visit Washington County Fair The Washington County Fair has reached its halfway point and continues to offer family fun, food and entertainment for everyone through Sunday night leaving fans several days to come out an enjoy this premiere event. An agricultural tradition for 121 years, the fair remains in Greenwich until Sunday, Aug. 28. Featuring many agricultural exhibits, hundreds of displays, local entertainers, a rodeo, amusement rides and games, vendors and all sort of delectable food the fair has something for everyone. Motor sports events take place every day of the fair including today when the Garden Tractor Pulls and
Truck Pulls take place at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m., respectively. On Saturday the competitors and the horsepower get even bigger as the Sanctioned Tractor Pulls rip down the track at 1 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27 as do the Big Rig Truck Pulls at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 28. Some of the performers who will return to the fair this year include The Elderly Brothers, Harold Ford and The Cash Band, and True Grass, as well as new performers, The Dry Town Drifters. Other popular entertainment that returns for 2011 include the Hot Dog Pig Races, Bob Smith and Reindeer,
The Town of Pawlet will celebrate the 250th anniversary of its charter this weekend of with a host of activities taking place in both Pawlet and West Pawlet including a barbeque, fireworks and parade. Organizers have been preparing for the ‘historic’ weekend for two years Judy Coolidge said. Pawlet Club 250 chairs Coolidge and Phyllis Mason have led the way, backed up by a dozen dedicated committee members. “It’s an event that I hope people will remember for years to come,” Coolidge said. Coolidge said she fondly recalls the celebration of the Pawlet Bicentennial in 1961. “I have really fond memories of that and I hope kids of today will carry memories of this with them and hopefully plan another event in another 50 years,” she said. If “I Love a Parade” is more of a personal motto than just a song to you Saturday will be a happy day. The parade steps off at 3 p.m., with line up starting at 2 p.m., leaving from the Bob Jones Farm on Route 153. The parade will proceed through the center of West Pawlet and south to Leslie Ironworks. The theme for the parade is ‘Pawlet through the Decades’. Coolidge said one thing she’s particularly excited about will

Sierra again rates Green Mountain as a 'cool school' For the second year in a row, Sierra magazine has placed Green Mountain College among the top schools in the country for environmental programming and operations. GMC is ranked second in the nation in the magazine’s fifth annual “Coolest Schools” list, which recognizes colleges and universities for their efforts to address climate issues and operate sustainably. The cover story in Sierra magazine’s September/October issue cites Green Mountain College for its commitment to sustainability in several categories including energy efficiency, food, academics, purchasing, transportation, waste management, administration, and financial investments. It applauds GMC for achieving climate neutrality earlier this year through a combination of efficiency, large-scale adoption of clean energy, and purchase of local carbon offsets through the Central Vermont Public Service “Cow Power” program. Green Mountain College was Sierra’s number one pick in 2010. “Each year Sierra does an exhaustive evaluation of colleges and universities, from classes and curriculum, to the way they heat and power their campuses,” said Paul Fonteyn, President of Green Mountain College. “To be among the top two schools in the country for two years running shows our continuing commitment to be
more sustainable in our programs and operations.” Green Mountain College has attracted several other accolades for sustainability practices in recent months. In June, the College received the Second Nature Climate Leadership Award presented by the Climate

Pawlet be ‘Fashion through the Decades’ as some marchers will be displaying fashions from any of the past 25 decades the town has seen pass by – from the 1840s to the 1980s and anything in between – as they march. The parade will feature ‘Green Mountain Boys’ in period costumes as well as the newly crowned Miss Vermont 2011 Katie Levasseur and Miss Vermont’s Outstanding Teen 2011 Sophia Hadeka are scheduled. “We’re anticipating a big crowd and people coming back from all over the country. I heard yesterday there will be someone from Washington State and someone from Alaska – it will be a real home coming,” Coolidge said. As daytime turns towards evening Saturday, festivities will move towards the Mettawee Community School because it’s the site of the free round and square street dance party from 7 to 9 p.m. following on the heels of the pulled pork barbeque which begins at 5 p.m. Capping off the night will be the perfect end to any evening – fireworks. Coolidge said anyone parked in the area around the school
will have a good view of the fireworks scheduled for some time around 9 p.m. During the dancing, at 6 p.m., Pawlet’s Sheldon’s Store will be recognized for being the longest continuously running familyowned business with more than 70 years in operation. A commemorative quilt will be presented to the town as well. The celebration weekend begins on Friday, Aug. 27 when the Pawlet Players Return to perform “That Darn Mummy” at the Mettawee Community School at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m., the later show t be followed by Dot Leach’s Dancers. The following day will be chocked full of events and activities both fun for the whole family and fascinating to more than just history buffs. The Saturday, Aug. 27 schedule is packed with open houses at the town cemeteries featuring ghostwalk tours at the Mettawee Valley Cemetery. Re-enactors in period costume will relate the experiences of people from Pawlet’s past. At Edie Mach’s Field adjacent the Mill Pond an antique farm machine and vehicle display will be staged. At the library in Center Pawlet, local man and author Tim Bryant will give a reading from his book, “A Father’s Gift” featuring stories about Bryant’s experiences with his father at
10 a.m. followed at 11 a.m. with a magic show. At the Pawlet Town Hall at 1 p.m. will be a special reading of the town charter followed by a reading of the Vermont State Legislature’s proclamation recognizing Pawlet’s 250th anniversary. The festivities at the town hall will include a historical portrayal of Daniel Webster by reenactor Jim Cooke entitled “I Still Live.” The presentation will take place at 1:30 p.m. The town hall is also the site for ‘The drawing.’ The Pawlett Historical Society will hold the drawing for the winner of the Cherry blanket chest. Created by local craftsman Gregg Gawlik, the tickets for the chest valued at $1,900 are 1 for $5 or three for $10. Tickets will be available during the celebration. Additionally, a special postal cancellation will be available at the Pawlet and West Pawlet post offices. Pawlet’s special cancellation will be available at the town hall; West Pawlet’s at its post office on Route 153. West Pawlet will host a pie sale, a village market of food and craft vendors, Vermont Hula Hoops and a display of West Pawlet memorabilia. Sunday, don’t forget the West Pawlet Fire Department’s annual fundraising auction, held at the firehouse in the village.

of this project, the town is working with the Vermont Land Trust to conserve the former Delaney property and secure about 200 acres of lakefront and forest land for town recreation and education purposes. We have raised about 87 percent of the needed funds! What a wonderful 250th birthday present for our town. As part of final fundraising efforts, the town has secured Manchester papers center foldout of a special section celebrating Wells’ birthday. Become a part of history and have your name in the paper and on a plaque on the town office. Call Nora at (802) 645-0486 for details. We are about to enter the next phase of this project and will be forming a committee in the upcoming weeks to review work on the interim management plan and begin work on a permanent management plan. We appreciate all the effort and support from so many in and around our community. The hard work of fundraising is, we hope, winding down and the exciting phase of actually closing the deal and making use of it is at hand. Happy Birthday Wells!

panies run all over the world. It remains special among the three Saint-Gobain plants making similar products, because while the Chaineaux, Belgium plant makes products for Europe, and the Shanghai plant makes similar products for Asia, but the Granville plant makes even more products, and they are shipped world-wide. The Shanghai plant is in a major city, but Kinisky is quick to point out that the rest are in smaller places. “We have been very successful in small communities,” Kinisky said.

He started there 22 years ago and was with the company when it was acquired by Saint-Gobain. Today, he is in charge of the Performance Plastics business, which employs 4,500 people working at 45 manufacturing plants in 15 countries, 20 countries including sales offices. Granville has is similar to many of those plants, Kinisky said, since it’s in a small town. “Many, many of our plants are in small communities,” he said. “They are a big part of the fabric of their communities, and we get good workers that way.” Kinisky is no stranger to the Granville plant, having visited eight times in the last four years and when he joined Norton in 1989; one of his first assignments was to visit here. “What’s funny, is I did not return to Granville until I became responsible for the Plastics business back in early 2007, so nearly 20 years later,” he added. “One thing that struck me was the greater diversity of products and applications, as well as, the fact that the customer’s requirements, expectations, and need for precision in the properties and characteristics of the products – the quality of our products - had risen dramatically. The basic equipment and processes had not changed much, but the attention to detail, the process controls, the World Class Manufacturing programs, overall plant efficiency had changed.” Kinisky points out that the Granville plant is competing not with plants in the local area, but with plants that other com-

includes: the Magic of Lance Gifford and Co., Rosaire’s Racing Pigs, Galaxy Girl and Cyver Trons, the Forever Locked NH Locked Moose Display, the Model Circus Display, and McDonald’s Bike Giveaway, to name a few. The Vermont State Fair will also offer an all new Midway provided by Coleman Bros. Shows. The new midway will include more than 30 rides, a variety of fair food and a number of games where fairgoers can try their hand at winning prizes. On most nights wrist bands are available for $20 and will provide folks with access to all the rides. There are also special promotions offered at various times during the week when rides will cost even less. For those willing to pay a little extra, organizers have planned a number of exciting events at the Grandstand, including two of the music industry’s most iconic acts. Charlie Daniels is scheduled to take the stage at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 9 and county music sensation Vince Gill will follow exactly 24 hours later. Of course the grandstand is also home to the fairs motor sports events, including the 4 Cylinder Demolition Derby and the Vermont State Demolition Derby. “The demolition derbies are always a fan favorite,” Rivers said. But perhaps even more exciting is the return of the always popular tractor pulls. “We’ve brought back the big boy tractor pull. A lot of people have been asking us to get the NYPTA Tractor Pulls back,” Rivers said. “They put on a very good show. The pulls will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 5 and will feature Super Stock Tractors, Modified Tractors (multiple engines), Two Wheel Drive Trucks, and Super Farm Tractors divisions. According to Rivers, the fair hasn’t hosted an NYPTAsanctioned event during his 11year tenure as fair manager. Of course, a fair isn’t a fair without the influence of agriculture and the Vermont State Fair won’t disappoint on that front. The fair was founded on agriculture more than a hundred and fifty years ago and that aspect of the fair has continued to grow since then. “All the exhibits, from the horses to the cattle, are looking fantastic,” Rivers said. Previous events have featured more than 1,200 agricultural exhibits and several hundred animals. Throughout the fair, patrons can watch sheep shearing demonstrations, horse shows, dairy judging, goat, sheep and oxen

Six Christian bands slated to perform in Whitehall's 'It's All About Jesus Fest' Mike Lemery, the pastor of Faith Chapel Assembly of God has always been a music fan. He’s attended large Christian music festivals such as Creation Festival in Pennsylvania and Soulfest in New Hampshire and his son, Stefan, is the lead singer of Inward Fire, a group comprised of Faith Chapel members. Now he’s hoping to bring some of that music to the Whitehall audience. Lemery has combined his passion for music and church into an all-day music festival he’s dubbed “It’s All About Jesus Fest.” The event will be held from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 3 at the Canal Side Park on Main Street and will feature six different Christian rock bands. “They have these things all over the country but nothing happens in the northeast because the churches are small so we decided as a church to see if we could pull it off. Sometimes you just need to stick your neck out there and go for it,” Lemery said. Although the event is being organized primarily by members of Faith Chapel and has an obvious religious component, it’s intended to be an event for people of all ages and faiths. “It’s meant to be a free community event. We have four or five different denominations supporting this thing,” Lemery said. The initial response to the event has been favorable. Lemery said the event has attracted about 300 facebook followers and he’s expecting several hundred people to show up. Organizers are hoping to augment those numbers with the crowds of people in town enjoying the annual Town-Wide Garage Sale. “We choose the Whitehall garage day because there are lots of people in town. They will be able to hear the music. I have my sound guy bringing in the same equipment they have at the larger festivals and there will be more than enough power to send the music out,” he said. “We’re hoping for anywhere from 500 to 1,000 a people.” The six bands who will attend include: Isaiah Six, Silversyde, Julian Drive, the Bradly Thomas Wilder Band, solo performer Rebecca Spataro, and local group Inward Fire. Several of the performers, such as Julian Drive from Georgia and Isaiah Six are very well known, Lemery said. Although all the music can be classified as Christian Rock, the festival will include a variety of musical genres from contemporary, rock, worship and even some heavy metal. “Silversyde will do some heavy stuff,” Lemery said. The festival will feature more than just music, however. There will be a “Meet and Greet Tent” where attendees will have the opportunity to chat up all the musicians and score autographs, all at no
charge. “Bubbles the Clown” will be doing face painting and making balloon animals and there will be all sorts of performer memorabilia for sale, including CD’s and official festival t-shirts. Organizers will be using the pavilion grill and there will be a variety of food available for hungry patrons as well as an information booth to provide people with any assistance they may need. All the proceeds from the event will be used to cover the cost of the event and anything extra will be saved for next year. Lemery said his ultimate goal is to make this an annual event and eventually attract sponsors so they can bring in more bands. “We’re hoping to have a good event that people will be happy with and like the idea and hopefully that gets more people to jump on board next year.
"This is our first time doing
something like this so it’s kind of uncharted territory for us. It’s been challenging.” Admission to the festival is free and overflow parking will be available at the Rec. Center. For more information, visit www.itsallaboutjesusfestival. com.

The Slate Valley Museum will host its annual dinner and silent auction fundraiser beginning at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 30, at the Forum Restaurant. Always known for unique items, this year’s Annual Dinner and Silent Auction will highlight artistic pieces created by our “First Friday in Granville” artists as well as gift certificates from local venues, and locally crafted gifts and products. Included in this year’s Silent Auction are artistic pieces by Roy Egg, Serena Kovalosky, Felix Kniazev, Olga Julinska, Patricia Bridges, and K. Walters . It will also include a wide variety of products from Rathbun’s Maple Sugar House, Telescope Casual Furniture, Curtis Lumber, and gift cards from many of the area’s best restaurants, and businesses. There will be open seating for the dinner, which will feature a buffet including chicken Cordon Bleu, sliced sirloin and baked haddock. Tickets are $35 each and RSVP are needed by Aug. 25. Proceeds from this years’ Annual Dinner and Silent Auction will support SVM’s operations for this year including its tradition of community minded programming, award winning exhibits, and locally focused educational programming. Through the generous donations of SVM’s local community the museum was able to create its latest season of programming “Rivals in Slate, Brothers in War: The Slate Valley Unites for the Union Cause” which explores the impact of the Civil War on the people of the Slate Valley through the journals, oral histories, sketches,
and artifacts of Slate Valley residents. Through our newest exhibit, dynamic programming, and a brand-new educational initiative, visitors and participants discover the story of how the Slate Valley community reacted to the war in ways that reflected both the region they lived in, and their native culture. Learn how Welsh-immigrants responded to the call to help preserve their adopted home, how future slate quarry owners grew-up on the battlefield, how women banded together to support the war, how free Blacks living in the Slate Valley left home to join distant regiments so they too could fight for “the cause,” and how Slate Valley-born General David Allen Russell sacrificed all for the Union The Slate Valley Museum is a private not-forprofit whose mission is to collect, catalogue, preserve, conserve, exhibit and interpret materials, artifacts, machines and information that demonstrate the geology of slate and the history of slate quarrying and the quarrying community in the Slate Valley of New York and Vermont from 1839 to the present. The exhibit “Rivals in Slate, Brothers in War: The Slate Valley Unites for the Union Cause” was made possible in part through the generous support of the New York Council for the Humanities, the Shepard Broad Foundation Inc., and the Miles Hodsdon Vernon Foundation Inc. For more information, or to make a reservation, visit the museum website at www.slatevalleymuseum.org or call the museum at 518-6421417.

The Fair Haven Historical Society has scheduled two fundraising events next month that will benefit the Marble Fence Project. For the culinary inclined, the society is once again sponsoring the Apple Pie Contest as part of Apple Fest on Sept. 17 in the Fair Haven Park The the rain date has been set for Sept. 24. The contest is split into two divisions: one for professional cooks and the other for amateurs. Professionals are asked to have their pies at the booth by 10 a.m. and they will go on sale
one hour later after the judges have had the opportunity to evaluate them. Amateurs are asked to turn in their pies by 11 a.m. and judging will begin at noon. Judging will be based on appearance, taste and texture. Ribbons are awarded for first, second and third place winners. Pies are required to be in eight or nine inch disposable pans and wrapped in clear plastic. All pies become property of the historical society after judging. The event will also feature a children’s category for the first
time. Judging for this category will be completed by other children. On Sept. 28 the Historical Society will host an Antique Appraisal event from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at the Fair Haven Grade School. Jim Marquis will appraise people’s collectibles. The cost is $5 for one item and $10 for three items. Refreshments will be served.
