The First Annual Lakes Region American Legion Golf Tourney will be held Monday, Aug. 8 at the Skene Valley Golf Club in Whitehall. There will be a 10 a.m. shot gun start. For the last 22 years the community has held a celebration that revolves completely around the biennial thistle and the tradition will continue this year as Benson prepares for the annual festival next weekend. The 22nd annual Benson Burdock Festival and Family Day will be held throughout the community on Sunday, Aug. 14. The annual event, which is in its fourth year, serves as an opportunity for members of the community to come together

Hay Ride in Oct.) and features a variety of activities. Among the many activities are a Townwide Yard Sale, Book Sale, Tag Sale, community cookouts and a parade. However it’s the burdocks that attract the most attention. According to local lore, a
couple of decades ago, three young Benson men were sitting in a greenhouse in downtown Benson, when naturally, their conversation turned to a large burdock plant growing in the center of the greenhouse. Speculation began as to who had the largest burdock plant in town. In order to resolve this situation, a contest was proposed, thus spurring a community tradition.
Today, citizens create displays and sculptures out of burdocks. Sue Janssen said she has seen a little of everything over the years but has her favorites. “I’m a little bias, but the best one I’ve seen was made by my father and it was a replica of the Lake Champlain monster.” There has also been a burdock ballerina and clothing made from burdocks. “It’s a hoot. We seem to have a never ending supply of burdocks in Benson,” Janssen joked. Those displays are evaluated by a panel of judges and awards are presented in three categories: tallest, most creative, biggest burdock ball and most theme-related. The judges tend to be summer residents so there aren’t any perceived biases and there’s some speculation Representative Peter Welsh may even judge some of this entries, Janssen said. All burdock entries are due at the town offices at 9 a.m. And for the first time in years they may even be burdock royalty. “This year, rumor has it that there may be a burdock king and queen. No one’s volunteered for the position in several years but I understand some people have said they were will-
ing to do it this year. According to Janssen, two of the most popular activities are the annual parade and fireman’s barbecue. “There just aren’t many parades left where the kids are allowed to march,” she said. The Parade is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will feature many of the burdock sculptures. This year’s theme is Hollywood “because of all the stars in Benson” and many of the floats and burdock sculptures will try and capture that theme in their design. The centerpiece of the event, the Fireman’s Barbecue will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The meal includes hams, baked potatoes, corn, coleslaw and dessert. “The best part is the homemade pies. Everyone in the community makes a pie and donates them for the barbecue,” Janssen said. Tickets for the barbecue cost $9 for adults and $5 for kids. Proceeds benefit the fire department. Other activities include a Book Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a Church and Town-wide Tag Sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and a dog agility contest at 11 a.m. There will also be a magic show at 1 p.m. and the Adirondack Drill Team
Equestrian Group will perform at 1, 2 and 3 p.m. Another activity Janssen said people really enjoy is VPTA Garden Tractor and ATV Pulls. She also said there will be a Basket Raffle to benefit the Benson eighth grade class. Drawings are scheduled to be held at 2:30 p.m. Kids will enjoy face painting and other children’s activities. “Gina Cull and everyone else involved do a really great job. It’s a lot of fun and everyone enjoys it.”

and enjoy games, food and other attractions. “It’s all about bringing the community together. It’s done for the community,” fire Chief Joe Mead said. “We have some new things this year and switched some things around. We’re trying to make it more family friendly and get people to stick around a little longer.” One of those new “things” that’s sure to attract its fair share of attention is the inaugural horseshoe tournament on Saturday afternoon. The double elimination tournament will feature teams of two and the duo that possesses enough skill to win will walk away with a trophy. Teams can register beginning at noon and the entry fee is $20. The tournament will start at 1 p. m . Organizers have also taken efforts to provide a little more entertainment for the children. They will have not one, but a couple of inflatable bouncy houses for the children to romp around in and they will offer pony rides for the first time. Of course, the carnival will bring back many of the attractions that have made it so successful in the past, including the dunk tank. Instead of falling into a tank as is custom with most dunk tanks, in Hampton the water is dumped on the victim, from a toilet. No need to worry however, Mead insists the water is clean and the toilets haven’t been

The sawdust pile will kick off the carnival each night before 7 p.m. to give the parents a chance to watch the kids digging around for little treasures. Hosley said the carnival will have its traditional Saturday afternoon chicken barbeque among the fair food everyone expects to find. Chicken cooking will be one time only this year and into the future after the fire company expanded their grill. “Getting in line early is still encouraged, we usually sell out and they go pretty quickly,” Hosley said. The chicken barbeque includes half a chicken, potato salad, cole slaw, fresh corn on the cob, rolls, a drink, and desert, all for $12.50.

This continuing tradition has been going strong for 44 years now, counting the off year. “It will be a good chance to come and meet the neighbors and visit. It’s kind of a social event here in town,” Hosley said. The carnival will continue to provide the family fun West Pawlet residents have come to expect, Hosley said. “It’s similar to what we’ve had in past years, but we’ve changed things up a bit,” he said. The Chief said the midway will have a couple of new games. Some things have changed because the area for the annual fundraiser is smaller following the fire house expansion project. “We’ve kind of scaled back to fit the lot because of the add-on,” he said. “It’s kind of a good excuse to come and see the place, the Bingo will be in the new meeting room,” Hosley said. The carnival represents one of the department’s major fundraisers for the year. Find the dunking booth for a chance to wet down someone you know. The evening’s events are usually in full swing by 7 p.m. The dunking booth should be populated with attractive targets. “We’ll have to see if we

You’ll also have the chance to win tickets to the Saratoga Race Track. Organizers will raffle off three pairs of tickets to the historic track. The package includes the entrance fee, club house tickets and parking. Proceeds from the raffle and the carnival benefit the fire department. “The event seems to pick up every year and this year looks like it may be the best yet, Mead said. “It should be a good time for the community.”

East Poultney bell to ring again Aug. 12 The bell atop the United Baptist Church of Poultney has sat idle for almost a full year. On Friday August 12, the bell will ring again. The bell will “toll” beginning at 2:18 pm and ending at 2:30 to honor and remember the 120 years (August 12, 1891) since George Jones’ death. After a moment of silence, the bell will ring to “let him that heareth, say ‘Come!’”, as is inscribed on the bell, to the George Jones Lecture Series in the Town Room of the church. M. Megan Roberts will be speaking on the research and book, “New Lives in the Valley: Slate Quarries and Slate Villages in North Wales, New York, and Vermont 1850-1920, that her father, Gwilym R. Roberts, wrote which earned him the George Jones Award from Green Mountain College. The bell’s silence and knowledge of the bell’s problems came from an assessment report of the

entire church structure. Help in getting this assessment was provided by the Preservation Trust of Vermont, through a matching fund grant program. Since that time efforts to raise funds for the work are taking place. Bob Isherwood, who oversees the grant funded projects for the church stated, “We were very glad to hear that the bell itself is sound but some of the bolts and supports need attention. The bell dates back to 1881 and has some original elements that require replacement.” The bell’s history is closely tied to Poultney’s long history. The bell is inscribed with the names of several prominent family names including Jones. In 1937, when with assistance from the grandsons of George Jones, co-founder of the New York Times, the church steeple was dedicated as the New York Times Tower and the bell was named in memory of George Jones. Assistance in this project has come from Church Specialties, Inc, East Poultney, and funding came from, in part, a National Welsh-American Foundation grant and from other donors. East Poultney Day celebration next weekend By Matthew Rice The Poultney Historical Society is pulling out all of the stops in celebration of the 250th anniversary of Poultney on East Poultney Day. “I hope you’ll have a chance to visit our historic village in East Poultney on the 13th of August, we’re going to have just a wonderful day of something for everyone,” Poultney Historical Society membership secretary Gail Vreeland said. The Aug. 13 event will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on and around the East Poultney Green showcasing two and a half centuries of all things Vermont. “I feel like we’re giving back to Poultney a little birthday gift because it’s the 250th anniversary this year,” she said. With the theme “Enduring and Renewing Traditions,” events will center on a sense of place. What are our Vermont roots, and what was it like to live here 200 years ago? Greg Sharrow, Director of Education and Folklorist at the Vermont Folklife Center will speak to that question in “A Sense of Place: Vermont’s Agricultural Heritage.”
Adding to the discussion will be a panel of retired farmers and young agricultural entrepreneurs including Green Mountain College graduates who will look at the similarities and differences in farming over time, and will discuss the issues involved in sustainability. “We’re going to have a nice discussion about how agriculture itself has been such a great influence not only in Poultney but in Vermont as a whole,” Vreeland said. Expanding on this theme, a story reading hour will enlighten young and old with the recollections of those real Vermonters whose roots go back for many generations. The event includes a full day of activities on the green in East Poultney for the entire family to enjoy. The baby oxen from GMC will be making an appearance. “Come see Zeus and Thor, we’re really looking forward to that,” Vreeland said. Throughout the day, 50 juried vendors sell crafts and folk arts, antiques and collectibles, maple syrup, jams, herbal soaps, vintage linen, handmade pottery and jewelry will offer innumerable opportunities to purchase
something unqiue. “There are going to be a lot more vendors this year it’s going to be jam packed,” Vreeland said. Demonstrations of traditional crafts will feature woodcarving, rug hooking, gun-smithing, spinning and weaving, as well as slate splitting and carving. Visitors often enjoy living history experiences in the 1791 Union Academy, Vermont’s second oldest school building. A children’s tent will provide period appropriate arts and crafts, games from yesteryear and perhaps even an old fashioned spelling bee. Food is available all day long, provided by the Poultney Snowmobile Club and the East Poultney Store; new this year is the Vermont Bean Crafters. Join Meredith Roberts Rehbach at 10 a.m. for “A Taste of Welsh,” an introduction and celebration of the Welsh language. The Welsh originally came to Poultney to work in the slate quarries, and their traditions and heritage grew as families settled into what is now known as the Slate Valley. The language of their homeland was echoed strongly for many years in homes, churches, and

historic collection. The popular display of the “Brides of Early Poultney” has been rejuvenated and features historic bridal dresses. No celebration is complete without music and dance. Throughout the day, musical performances by local musicians will include Paul Opel of Green Mountain College playing one of the melodeons produced in Poultney’s Melodeon Factory and a concert by Natalia Czar on the Celtic harp. Additional musical fun will be provided by the Spruce Knob Uprising. The combined Poultney and Granville Town Bands will perform a concert to complete the day’s festivities. public events where the Welshlanguage was showcased in song and poetry. The East Poultney Green is one of Vermont’s real treasures. It has a rich collection of historic homes and buildings clustered around its striking 1805 Baptist Church. Due to the efforts of the Historical Society, several of the buildings have been saved and restored and are now museums. As a focus of East Poultney Day, which dates back to 1935, the Historical Society offers an open house in each of these three fascinating museums: The 1791 restored Union Academy schoolhouse, the second oldest in Vermont, displays its quill pens, slate boards, and antique desks, just as it looked 150 years ago.. The 19th century Melodeon Factory (which made small reed organs) houses much of the Society’s collection of period clothing, antique wagons, household utensils, and of course, melodeons. Art in the Park festival next weekend By Derek Liebig One of Rutland’s premier events is celebrating its golden anniversary this year. The annual Art in the Park Festival has been held in Rutland for the past 50 years and has become a local tradition looked forward to by residents near and far. This year’s summer festival will be held on Saturday and Sunday Aug. 13 and 14 in Main Street Park at the junction of Routes 4 and 7, and is poised to be one of the best to date. The event, which is held twice a year in mid-summer and autumn (this year’s autumn festival is Oct. 8-9), is the Chaffee Art Center’s major fundraising event and features art and crafts vendors from throughout the northeast. Anywhere between 8,000 and 10,000 people attend the festivals each year. “The big thing we have done is hired a new coordinator to organize the event. We’re trying to make it a signature event
in central Vermont,” the center’s executive director Mary Mitiguy said. Ghostwriter Communications is the new coordinator and has experience in organizing similar events throughout the area. “They have experience and have brought some new energy,” Mitiguy said. “We’re really concentrating on promoting the event.” Many of the same vendors from previous years return as well as some new ones. “We have a few more vendors this year than we’ve had in the past,” Mitiguy said. “It’s always fun to see the people who have been coming every year. There’s always the known entity but there are always new vendors that are very interesting.” The visual arts will be represented by a selection of oil paintings, acrylics and photographs and a variety of crafts will be featured including: baskets, pottery, floral pieces, jewelry, hand-blown glass
items, furniture, wood working and much more. Several vendors will even provide hands-on demonstrations of jewelry making, spinning and knitting, woodworking, among others. The event will also feature live entertainment. Sarah Wallis, an acoustic guitarist and singer/songwriter, will perform a series of musical performances throughout the weekend. “She grew up in the area. It’s fun and exciting for her,” said Mitiguy. There are also all sorts of local food vendors who will offer culinary delights for hungry festival-goers. Hamburgers, chicken, clams, breaded egg plant, wraps, fruit smoothies, baked goods, kettle corn, cotton candy, ice cream and cinnamon roasted nuts are just a few of the many offerings. Patrons will also have the chance to visit the Chafee Art Center, across the street from the park, who will be celebrating their 50th anniversary as well.
The center will have its Fourth Annual Amateur Photography contest on display featuring work from some of the area’s most talented amateur photographers. “We encourage people to come by, check out the exhibit and vote for their favorite,” Mitiguy said. There is no fee for entry to the festival but donations, which help to support the non-profit enterprise of The Rutland Area Art Association (RAAA) and the Chaffee Art Center, are welcome. The first fifty visitors at each gate will receive a complimentary canvas tote emblazoned with the Art in the Park 50th Anniversary logo. A free shuttle will bring Festival attendees from the free parking available at the Vermont State Fairgrounds to the Main Street Park and will run about every 20 minutes. Director of Economic Development and Tourism for the Town of Killington, which was instrumental in securing the event. “We are extremely pleased to bring the Spartan Race to town,” says Webb. “It’s a natural fit and a tremendous addition to our summer calendar of events.” The Spartan series is the brainchild of uber-sports impresario Joe Desena of Pittsfield, Vermont, who became legendary for the annual Death Race in his hometown.

President Roosevelt coming to Lakes Region Paul Stillman, an actor from Western New York, is in the business of “bringing history to life in the first person.” And this weekend, some of that history will come to life in Whitehall as Stillman portrays one of America’s most iconic figures. Stillman will portray Rough Rider and 26th President, Teddy Roosevelt in a one man presen-
tation at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6 at Cooke’s Island Recreation Center. Stillman, who operates “Historically Speaking” in Cameron Mills, portrays 10 different figures including Galileo, Benjamin Franklin, a Native American, a 17th century Samurai and several others. In Saturday’s program, Stillman’s portrayal will give
the audience a deeper understanding of Roosevelt’s life and provide insight into the events and ideas that shaped the man he became. Stillman has been performing his first-person, historical programs for over 20 years. He has performed for schools, libraries, civic groups, museums and more. Each performance includes visual aids, support materials and props than enhance the program and makes it’s an enjoyable experience. Besides actual historical figures, Stillman has created several of his own. For instance, he has created a New York State Civil War soldier from the wartime letters and diaries of an actual soldier. He’s done the same for a New York militia man during the American Revolution. All of his programs adhere to national or state curriculum. The following week, on Aug. 13, another well know historical figure, Mark Twain, will make an appearance at Cooke’s Island as part of the Saturday Night Theater program. A leading figure in animation from the 1950s through the 1990s, Favata retired and moved to Washington County in 1997, but his body of work continues to inspire a new generation of artists. He’s worked on everything imaginable from projects with Frank Zappa to the TV series Doug. Much of it will be on display at the Pember. At the Slate Valley Museum, six members of the Friends of Photography club participated in a slate quarry photo shoot, compiling a photographic record of their experience that communicates the photographers’ quarry experience. These photos will be on display. Finally First Fridays always have music and we will be enjoying members of the Emerald Valley Recorder Ensemble playing for us throughout the evening. Patti Kelley, Judi Seltman and Mary Berger will play music that includes both Renaissance and Baroque styles on recorders made from a variety of wood types. This is only a fraction of the larger group that perform a diverse program of music on recorders of all shapes and sizes – soprano, alto, tenor and bass.
