Girl Scouts to hold band instrument drive and concert Have an old saxophone taking up space in your attic? Is that forgotten clarinet collecting dust? Arlington Girl Scout Troop 30462 is offering the perfect opportunity to recycle your old instruments for a good cause with their take-action project, “Symphony Supply,” being conducted throughout the month of October. The project is the conclusion of the scouts’ Leadership Journey. All donated instruments will benefit students at Fisher Elementary School and Arlington Middle School. Those wishing to donate an instrument in good or reparable condition can drop them off at Fisher, Arlington Middle School, or the Arlington Inn. If you don’t have an old instrument hanging around but would like to support the cause, Troop 30462 is also hosting a benefit concert at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 27 at St. James Church in Arlington. Area musicians will join the scouts to entertain guests for a coffee-house styled evening. Admission is $1 for seniors, $3 for adults, and free for children under five. Proceeds from the event will help offset the costs of refurbishing instruments and for a scholarship to fund instrument rentals. Rick Raphael Photography exhibit Southern Vermont photographer Rick Raphael will present “100/10 – 100 Great Images/10Wonderful Years,” a collection of photographic works, at the Canfield Library from Oct. 1 through Oct. 29. A retrospective from his large body of work, the show will include studio pieces, portraits of animals and people, botanicals, landscapes, and other unusual and innovative work. “My photographic art is so diverse, both in time and place, that I thought a retrospective would be exciting to put together,” Raphael says. “I love looking at pieces that I made 10 years ago and comparing them to my most recent work. Stylistically they
may differ, but all spring from a desire to find the beauty hidden within each subject.” Raphael has been a working photographer since 1965 in both motion pictures and stills in New York, Vermont, and around the world. This exhibit will feature images that range from commercial to portraiture to fine art. The Canfield Gallery is located on East Arlington Road, across from Arlington High School. The gallery is open during library hours: Tuesday and Thursday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday from 2 to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, call (802) 375-6153 or visit www.marthacanfieldlibrary.org.
Bestselling author Jodi Picoult at Northshire this week New York Times bestselling author Jodi Picoult will make a rare local appearance at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 18 at the Maple Street School in Manchester with her new novel, “Sing You Home.” Guest musician Ellen Wilber will be on hand to perform songs she composed for the book. Never one to shy away from a difficult subject, Jodi Picoult’s novels beautifully unfold around some of the most substantive and relevant subject matter out there today. In “House Rules,” she wrote about a teenager with Asperger’s Syndrome, and in “My Sister’s Keeper,” she explored the life of a daughter conceived as a bone marrow match for her ill sister. In “Sing You Home,” Zoe Baxter, a music therapist, fights for the legal rights to her unborn child. The novel is about identity, love, marriage and parenthood, and what happens when the outside world calls into question the very thing closest to our hearts, family. At age 44, Jodi Picoult is the author of 18 nov-
els. She has been honored with many awards, including the New England Bookseller Award for Fiction, the Alex Award from the Young Adult Library Services Association, a Vermont Green Mountain Book Award, and Cosmopolitan magazine’s “Fearless Fiction” Award. Her book “My Sister’s Keeper” was made into a major motion picture starring Cameron Diaz. She lives with her husband Tim and three children in Hanover, New Hampshire. Musician Ellen Wilber has more than 25 years of experience introducing children to music. She is a member of the bluegrass band Cardigan Mountain Tradition. Tickets for this special event are $10 admission, or $21 for admission and a copy of “Sing You Home.” Tickets are available online at www. northshire.com and at Northshire Bookstore. They can be picked up at the bookstore or at the school on the night of the event. For more information, call the bookstore at 802-362-2200.

Exhibit opening for Colin Brant at Bennington Museum An opening for the new exhibit by painter Colin Brant at the Bennington Museum will be held from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15 in the museum’s Regional Artists Gallery. The exhibit will be on view through Nov. 13. “I make paintings that refer to a 19th century American Romantic view of the landscape combined with the dreamy air of the French Rococo,” said Brant. Working in oil on canvas, Brant’s approach is one in which reverence and skepticism coexist naturally, he said. Brant received his BA in Studio Arts from the University of California Santa Cruz, where he won the Chancellors Award in Painting. He furthered his studies at the University of Iowa, where he was awarded an MFA in Painting. Brant has twice received from the New York Foundation for the Arts a Fellowship Grant in Painting, and was artist in residence at the Cite Internationale des Arts in Paris in 2002. He is represented in New York by the Adam Baumgold Gallery and in Boston at the Beth Urdang Gallery. His paintings have also been exhibited at the Geoffrey Young Gallery, the Westport Arts Center, and the Dumbo Arts Center. Brant has taught at Williams College and the School of Art and Design at Alfred, where he was also director of the Fosdick Nelson Gallery.

Hildene offers $1,000 first prize for essay competition In its mission to “advance the Lincoln legacy,” Hildene is sponsoring a Lincoln Essay Competition for all eighth graders who live or attend school in Vermont. The goal of the competition, now in its sixth year, is to promote awareness in the minds of a young generation of the contributions of the nation’s 16th president and the meaning of civic responsibility that he exemplified. Academically, the exercise also reinforces the importance of research, critical analysis and good writing. In researching their essay, students will need to identify the personal qualities that Lincoln developed during his lifetime that led him to act on the issue of slavery, and what made him so effective. With the knowledge they gain from their research, the young writers should respond to the following question: About what wrong in need of righting, or what oppor-
tunity to make a difference, do you feel passionately enough to try to do something to make your community, your state, your country or even the world a better place? Packets have gone out to teachers across Vermont, but students may also enter the competition independently. Essay competition materials are available online at www. hildene.org/schools.html. Each student must submit his or her non-fiction essay (maximum 500 words) to Hildene by Feb. 12, 2012. All winners will be notified by the end of March. On May 20, 2012, a celebratory luncheon will take place at Hildene, followed by a tour of the Lincoln Family Home. Each winner, their parents and teacher, will attend as Hildene’s guests. The first, second and third place winners will read their essays and receive their awards. The following prizes
will be given: First Place, $1,000; Second Place, $750; Third Place, $500, and up to 10 Honorable Mentions of $200 each. For more information, call Stephanie at (802) 367-7960 or email Stephanie@hildene.org.
