Learn to read bees

By Matthew Rice Reading bees is nothing like a spelling bee or reading a book so a University of Delaware expert is coming to Manchester to talk about honeybees and reading their behavior. The event will be 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, at the Israel Congregation entomology and wildlife ecology professor Dr. Dewey M. Caron will share his insight and experience regarding honeybees, phenomenon known as ‘colony collapse’ and much more. “His focus is on honey bees and their behavior; he’s been from Bolivia to Bennington studying bees,” Northshire/ Southern Vermont Beekeepers Association Vice President Scout Proft said. “It should be a really interesting discussion with all kinds of people from high school kids to serious beekeepers and people who just have an interest in honey bees,” Proft said. A Stamford native, Caron will share the knowledge amassed about honeybees, what can be done about ‘colony collapse’ and much more. It’s not every day an expert of this caliber comes to town, so Proft said she recommends

attending for everyone from serious bee keepers to ‘bee cheerleaders’ who are just enthusiastic supporters of all things pollination. “We’re really very fortunate to get him get him to southern Vermont to espouse his wisdom,” Proft said. The event happened almost by accident, she said. “He was going to be here and he just called us up,” Proft said Caron will speak to both serious bee-keepers and fans of pollination in general about how to read bees based on their out-ofhive behaviors. Proft said some of the topics covered will include the environmental ramifications of losing honey bees and how to make the honey bee population in your neighborhood healthier. Anyone can come and might want to when they hear every third mouthful they take when they eat has something to do with pollination. “No one thinks about that tiein. We have to think more and more about this it’s very much an environmental challenge to increase the population of local honey bees,” Proft said. The presentation is free of charge and all are welcome to

Boys with bees.... come find out how foods are being impacted by the loss of so many pollinators. Luen’s nearly famous refreshments will be served at

the meeting. “People are a lot more concerned about pollination, in general, as well as the health of our pollinators,” she said.

For more information contact Maddie Sobel at 362-4452 or Scout Proft at 362-2290. Registration in advance is not necessary.

“The Logger” to perform in Arlington By Matthew Rice Well-known Ver mont Comedian ‘The Logger’ will perform at the Arlington Memorial High School Gymnasium, Friday, March 25 and Saturday, March 26. Show time for both nights is 7 p.m. All tickets are $20, and proceeds will benefit the Mack Attack AAU Girls Basketball Team with players from Bennington, Londonderry, Arlington and Manchester. The team is fundraising to for a trip to compete in a Mother’s Day tournament. Tickets can be purchased at the Arlington Memorial High School store or Fisher Elementary Main Office. Known as Rusty DeWees, when not on stage, the comedian has a following throughout the state. As a result, organizers are encouraging those who are interested to get their tickets

early to be sure they have a seat. “This is actually the first time we’ve used The Logger as a fundraiser,” AAU parent Deanne Lacoste said. Lacoste said the show will have only 400 tickets each night. “People have said they sell out pretty quickly so it’s best to get them in advance,” she said. Tickets are available at the door only if the show has not sold out. Months ago, before a long snowy winter, Lacoste said team parents were looking for something a little different from the ordinary fundraiser event. “It was a parent’s idea to get something different into to the area to get some comedy and fun for all, especially with all of the nice weather we’ve been having,” Lacoste said she has been advised by DeWees the show is appropriate for all ages. This will be the Logger’s first appearance in Arlington, she said.

Get your tickets soon to see "The Logger". “I’m looking forward to something different for the community; there area a lot of dinner and other fundraisers but it’s nice to bring sort of a different thing here,” Lacoste said. “This is also an opportunity

to see a show and support the Mack Attack so they can attend An eclectic and innovative act, The Logger one-man comedy show is best described as “Blue Collar Comedy” meets “Prairie Home Companion.”

The show has been steadily selling out theatres, large and small, throughout New England ever since it hit the stage in 1998. The success of the live act has spawned three Logger DVDs, two CDs, five calendars, Logger apparel (duct tape wallets included), and Scrawlins, a compilation of Rusty’s columns for syndicated and regional newspapers. The Mack Attack AAU is a local affiliate of a national organization whose mission is to further develop the skills of amateur athletes and promote good sportsmanship and good citizenship. For more information about The Logger performance, contact AAU Fundraising Chair Deanne Lacoste at lacosted@ bvsu.org or 375.6409. Poultney hosting community-wide maple celebration By Derek Liebig The trees have been tapped, the lines have been run, and stacks of smoke will soon begin to rise from local sugarhouses. The maple sugaring season has returned and the community of Poultney has begun to make plans for its annual celebration of all things maple. Maple Fest 2011 will be held the weekend of March 19 and 20 throughout Poultney. Sponsored by the Poultney Area Chamber of Commerce and the Poultney Downtown Revitalization Committee, Maple Fest is a community event that pays homage to the return of the maple sugaring season with a variety of events and activities. “Maple Fest is geared to bring people into the area for fun and entertainment and celebrate the maple season,” Maple Fest chairwoman Pam Mikkelsen explained. Admission to Maple Fest is absolutely free, and with the exception of a few shopping and dining opportunities, patrons can enjoy an entire weekend of fun without spending any money. “It’s completely free. If you don’t want to spend money, you don’t have to,” Mikkelsen said. The event, which has been known to attract several hundred people to town and is one of its largest events, showcases Poultney’s maple sugaring industry. Throughout the weekend, several of the community’s sugarhouses will open their doors and welcome in guests to observe their sugaring operations. At some, such as Green’s Sugar House on Finel Hollow Road, maple producers will even demonstrate some of the techniques they employ during the sugaring process. Closer to the center of town, organizers will host a number of family-friendly, communityminded events. “It’s basically the same format as previous years. There will be a number of activities on Main Street from St. Raphael’s to Green Mountain College,” Mikkelsen said. Organizers have created two separate maps to help people find their bearings during the weekend. One indicates the location of participating sugarhouses and the other the location of specific activities throughout the village. Both maps will be available at the Stonebridge The festival begins on Saturday morning with two of Maple Fest’s most popular events: the Maple Pancake Breakfast and the Maple Fest 5K Run. The breakfast, which will be held from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. at the Methodist Church, features

authentic maple syrup from local producers. It’s followed by the Maple Fest Run at 10 a.m., a 5K run. Other traditional activities include the 4th Annual Maple Bake-Off Contest, Horse Drawn Wagon Rides, and a Silent Auction at St. Raphael’s Catholic Parish Hall.

“I’d strongly encourage people to stop by at least once and check some of the items donated by local businesses and make a bid,” Mikkelsen said. “We have gotten a lot of support from the business community.” Organizers have also added several newer activities over the last few years that have

proved popular. “The Interactive Family Games at Green Mountain College were something that were started last year and proved to be a big hit,” Mikkelsen said. “It’s aimed at kids and is basically a watereddown education of how maple sugaring works.”

Sponsored by The Environment Ed Class at Green Mountain College, children will learn about maple trees, how to identify them, what sap is, and how you collect it. They will also learn more about traditional sugaring techniques through

a series of interactive games, such as the Speedy Sap Simulation Race, a sort of maple-inspired relay race. Mikkelsen also pointed out face painting at the college and the Maple Story Time as other events children may enjoy. “It’s (Maple Fest) really an event geared to bring children to,” Mikkelsen said. This year’s event also features an added emphasis on local art. Art from a variety of

different mediums, including oil and water paintings, ceramics, and photography will be on display at the Stonebridge and the Poultney Theater Group will read poetry from a number of American and British poets. Mikkelsen offered a few suggestions on how people could best take advantage of Maple Fest Weekend. “In my opinion, run first and then have breakfast. If you have children, go to the college and then walk up Main Street toward the church (St. Raphael’s). It’s a good place to be between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. for lunch and dessert from the

Maple Bake Off.” She suggest parents use the afternoon to take their children to the library for story time, participate in a nature walk, or visit one of the local sugarhouses. And, most importantly, enjoy yourself. “The focus is to have fun,” she said. “That’s the whole point.”

Washington County hosting Maple Weekends

Inside Grottoli’s Sugarhouse Saturday and Sunday was a flurry of activity. Maple Weekend is almost upon us and the family was getting ready to host visitors from all around the region starting Friday, March 18 as Grottoli’s hosts the ceremonial first tapping of the two week celebration of all things maple across the state of New York. Just after noon Friday dignitaries will gather at Grottoli’s to kick off the tastiest two weeks of the year. “It’s a lot of work just getting ready,” owner Mike Grottoli said Saturday. After putting in a full day of work getting the sugarhouse ready to go, Grottoli said he still had a great deal to do to be ready for everything that will happen over the last two weeks of the month. Maple Weekend runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday on March 19 and 20 and March 26 and 27 when sugarhouses across, not just Granville, but the state will throw open the doors and invite the curious in for tours and samples of the various fruits of the sugarbush. With weather after the latest storm to whack the region conducive to flowing sap, Grottoli said he could have already started boiling Saturday, but he was too busy getting decked out for company. “It started to run for us really good (recently),” he said. During open house weekends Grottoli’s hosts a pancake and sausage breakfast. So part of the work has been relocating the breakfast area into the sugarhouse from its former location up the driveway out back. Samples of everything from maple candy to fresh hot syrup are available at most sugarhouse locations. Find the official Maple Weekend site at www.mapleweekend.com.
