Washington County farms open for Fiber Tour Like the rest of the farms on the 19th annual Washington County Fiber Tour, Quarry Ridge Alpacas will be open next weekend for visitors to come see its herd and learn about fiber arts. But Herb and Faith Perkins have something that few of the other farms can provide. Their farm is up Quarry Hill Road, off Route 22 in Salem, and while it’s a winding trip to their driveway and up to the house and barns, visitors will be rewarded with a beautiful view of the Vermont hills and with a friendly reception. All the farms will give visitors a chance to get up close with the animals and will offer various activities, some focused directly for children. Some farms will offer workshops and answer questions about raising alpacas and other animals. Spinners will also be at some of the farms, and the Battenkill Fibers Carding & Spinning Mill in Greenwich will demonstrate what happens to the fibers once they have come off the animals. Visitors have been prowling the roads of Washington County, visiting farms that raise various fiber-bearing animals for nearly 20 years and
they will be out there again on Saturday, April 23 and Sunday, April 24. Most of the farms on the tour will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., April 28 and 29. Some farms are open only on Saturday, and some will not open until noon Sunday. Many farms will also be offering locally grown products, including maple syrup, and work by local artisans. Another of the alpaca farms, Heritage Manor Suri Alpacas in Hebron, focuses specifically on the Suri breed, which is not common in the northeast. Other farms on the tour include AREA Cria-tions Alpaca Farm in Fort Ann, Alpacas of Breezy Hill Ranch in West Hebron and Alpacas of Haven Hill in Greenwich. Moments in Time Creations farm, which shares the same Salem site with Fiber Kingdom, will have spring lambs to visit with. Ryder Road Alpacas in Whitehall and Parkland Alpaca Farm in Granville will also be open, as well. Ryder Road will have children’s activities and Parkland will have consultations on raising alpacas. See Two Sides of John Willis The Bennington Museum will host not one, but two exhibits by photographer John Willis in a show running through May 2. “Views from the Reservation” and “Recycled Realities” are on view in the Regional Artists Gallery starting this week. Widely exhibited, Willis’ work is in the permanent collection of the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, The Whitney Museum of American Art and Yale University Gallery of Art to name just a few. Since 1992, Willis has been traveling to the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, tribal home of the Oglala Lakota Sioux People. While there, he visited often with the Reddest family of Lost Dog Creek. Knowing the critical debates that arise with photographing indigenous people living in less fortunate circumstances, it was difficult to exhibit the images taken. During one of the last visits to the reservation, Willis spoke with Grandfather Eugene Reddest and Uncle Tommy Crow and discussed how the pictures would be used. Willis suggested that they be used as momentos for the Reddest family and their

been presented for that purpose. “Photography provides me with a visual tool for exploration and communication. The ways we communicate with each other and the world around us have always been major points of interest and conten-

tion throughout my life. Because I choose to represent my observations about the world in images rather than in written essays, I have used photography in a variety of ways. John Willis said. This exhibit is a clear illustration of this statement. The images in “Recycled Realities are representative of a body of work executed from 1998 through 2002. Not too far from Willis’ home there is a road with picturesque scenery. Upon turning a corner, the road opens to a paper mill.
The platform just outside the mill spans over two acres and is covered with bales of bound up paper scraps delivered for recycling. The variety of still life images found in these bales, represent everything which goes on in society. The images in “Recycled Realities are found still-life photographs made of selected pieces from bales of scrap paper on its way to being recycled. “The variety of images one can find in these bales by searching through the random placement of paper scraps continues to amaze me on formal and conceptual terms. As I search for visual and communicative breadth in my images, I am constantly viewing these found still life images as a personal contemporary archeological dig, everything which goes on in our society seems to turn up in these bales of discarded waste, Willis said. Willis currently teaches at Marlboro College in Marlboro, Vt. He is co-founder and executive director of the In-Sight Photography Project in Brattleboro, a volunteer program offering free classes for area youth to explore self-
