Beer and food pairings at museum event
By Bill Toscano
When you say “museum,” the next word to come to mind is definitely not “beer.” The Bennington Museum is changing that by tapping into the growing interest in homebrewing. In September, the museum will host the fifth annual Southern Vermont Homebrewers Festival, but beer geeks won’t have to wait that long to help raise money for the museum by having a few beers. The Museum will host a “Food and Beer Pairing” from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Friday, May 20. “This is the second year we have done it,” museum executive director Stephen Perkins said. “Last year was much

"The cast of Burr and Burton Academy Media and Performing Arts Department invite you to the family friendly, hilarious musical ";; Good News" 17-21;; 2011 in the Riley Center for the Arts."
Burr & Burton takes to stage Burr and Burton Academy’s Media and Performing Arts Department is roaring back to the 1920s with the footballthemed musical Good News at 6:30 p.m. May 17- 21, with a 2 p.m. matinee on May 21 in the Riley Center for the Arts. Football reigns supreme on the fictional Tait University campus and Tait’s coeds, cheerleaders and football players are obsessed with their star football player, Tom Marlowe. Most students will drop everything to watch him practice, or to follow
his soap-opera romance with Pat, the daughter of one of the school’s wealthiest benefactors. Connie Lane, an intensely studious young woman, is unaware of the football mania at Tait. Ironically, Connie is recruited to help when Marlowe fails the astronomy final he needs to pass in order to play in the big game Saturday. Tom’s best friend Bobby Randall is pursued by the vivacious flapper Babe O’Day and hilarity ensues as he tries feverishly to avoid her ex- boyfriend Beef
Saunders. Soon Tom, Connie, and Bobby and Babe fall for each other while the football coach and the astronomy professor rekindle their own college romance. Inevitably, these couples’ love can only survive if the team wins the big game. Tickets are $7 for BBA students, faculty, staff and children under 18 and $12 for the general public and can be ordered online at www.burrburton.tix.com . For 24-hour information call: 802-549-8224
When the Ver mont Humanities Council chose the book for this year’s annual “Vermont Reads” program, it picked an iconic story that resonates with both racism and our memories of junior high or high school English class. “To Kill A Mockingbird,” which won the 1961 Pulitzer Prize and was made into a movie starring Gregory Peck, is this year’s choice for the program. The Humanities Council will provide up to 75 copies of the book to communities that apply. The council will also include resource and publicity material. Some communities are well under way with their programs, and the deadline for those who want to take part is Monday, May 16, though the council will consider proposals after that date. The book, written by Harper Lee, tells the story of racism in a small Southern town through the eyes of a 6-year-old girl named Scout growing up in the Deep South in the 1930s. Reading it and discussing its themes has been a rite of passage of students for nearly 50 years. So far, 31 communities are taking part, including Bennington and Manchester. A large number of local towns in both Rutland and Bennington counties have taken part in the
program in the past. Andrea Robare, the reference librarian at Southern Vermont College, said the book project brought together her school, Bennington College and the McCullough Library. “It’s a nice bridge,” she said. “It’s a way for the community and the colleges to work together. We had never done a project with Bennington before, and it was nice to be able to do that.” At Southern Vermont a professor did small-group activities based on the book with students, staff and faculty. McCullough used it in its book clubs and had a lawyer come in to discuss the book.

Beer Continued from front page smaller, maybe six or seven restaurants and beers. It was fun, and it was intimate. I think this year’s will be much more sophisticated. Tickets are $40 per ticket, $35 for museum members. You may call 802 447-1571 to order your tickets, visit www.benningtonmuseum.org or stop by the museum. Major credit cards are accepted. The Bennington Museum is located at 75 Main Street in Bennington. Perkins sees a clear connec-
tion between the museum’s mission and showcasing craft beer and local food. “As the Bennington Museum, we celebrate the culture of the area, and the craft. Isn’t making food a beer a craft?” Many of the finest chefs in the region will prepare food to go with international and regional craft brews that have been y selected by Scott Anderson, craft beer portfolio manager. Affiliated with G. Housen, a leading multi-brand distributor of premium wine, beer and soft beverages, Anderson is creating brew and food matches that cannot be compared. Beer fans will
recognize some of these as among the best American microbreweries have to off, and the addition of Belgian beers adds the high level of quality. From Portland, Maine, Anderson will bring two of Allagash Brewing’s Belgian styles -- White and Tripel. From Stone Brewing in California, a brewery at the forefront of the big” beer movement, there will be Smoked Porter, Vertical Epic and the very popular, Arrogant Bastard Ale. Saison Dupont Farmhouse Ale from Brasserie Dupont in Belgium, and Foret Organic Ale, a Saison beer that is the first certified organic beer in
Belgium will make the trip across the Atlantic. The Saison Dupont is an excellent entry beer for anyone interested in one of the Belgian styles. Bosteels Tripel Darmeilt, and Scaldis Refermentee Ale are also on the menu, and of Bennington’s own Madison Brewing Company will have its beer there. Of course, there is one of the great brews made in Bennington at Madison Brewing Company. The restaurants are at the same high level. They will include The Perfect Wife, Carmody’s West, Mt. Anthony Country Club, Spice Root, Four Chimneys Inn, Crazy Russian
Girls Neighborhood Bakery,
Wild Oats Market, Madison Brewing Company, The Publyk House, Bennington Station, and That’s a Wrap and more. The Invisible Jams, an upand-coming acoustic rock duo will be playing a mix of original acoustic and electric rock tunes with an indie edge. While most of the band’s tunes are originals, they also weave a number of cover jams into their live sets Brewfest in September Perkins said the museum’s success brew fest also added impetus to the tasting event.”We already have a great craft beer event in the fall, and we added the pairing to balance it.” The fifth annual Southern Vermont Homebrew Festival will be held from noon to 5 p.m., Sept. 24, at the Bennington Bruch Company on North Street. The competition to find the best home brew in the air is another benefit for the Bennington Museum. The winner will have his beer brewed by the Madison Brewing Company in Bennington, Vermont. Sponsored in part by Madison Brewing Company of Bennington, this year we are expecting upwards of 75 homebrews to be judged by an expert panel including AHA/BJCP judges. We are becoming an AHA sanctioned event which will bring the competition to another level. The craft beer event will also feature the popular Celtic rock band “Hair of the Dog.”
Book Continued from front page Oceana Wilson, Director of Library and Information Services at Bennington College got a group of college students together and took them to local schools to facilitate The Maple Street School in Manchester Center also participated in the event earlier this year. Vermont Public Radio just finished a series of stories on the book, which are available at www.vpr.com. One of those programs was a live discussion from Burr & Burton Academy that included students who had read the book. NRG Systems of Hinesburg is the underwriter of the 2011 Vermont Reads program, and have underwritten the program since 2007. Communities interested in applying can visit www.vermonthumanities.org or call 802.262.2626 x306.

East Asian cooking demonstration in Dorset The Kitchen Store at J.K Adams will present Easy Asian Cooking with Helen Chen at 1 p.m., Saturday, May 14 at the store on Route 30 in Dorset. The menu will include Beef and Broccoli in Oyster Sauce, Chicken with Cashew Nuts, Shanghai Golden Fried Rice, and Minute Sweet and Sour Cucumber Salad Helen Chen, who is the daughter of Joyce Chen, discovered a love for Chinese cooking at a very young age. She grew up in a culinary wonderland, spending much time at her family’s Chinese restaurant in Boston, learning everything she could about Chinese cooking. At 11 years old Helen began working at the restaurant. It was a family business and everyone pitched in. Her first job there was to pack take-out orders. During this time she also helped out at home. While her mother was busy cooking at the restaurant, Helen often took care of dinner for herself and her two younger brothers. The Chen children made many a meal of delivery food from Chicken Delight (a
Helen Chen local fried chicken place) and Tower of Pizza . They also enjoyed frozen TV dinners (Salisbury Steak was Helen.s favorite.) Sometimes Helen would also try to bake for her brothers. This was a special challenge for her because generally speaking the Chinese don’t bake (they do not use ovens in China) so there was little example to pattern her baking after. Helen learned everything she could about it from the only cookbook in the

Music lessons available The Manchester Music Festival is once again offering area children the opportunity to take music lessons during its 25th annual Music Education Week, July 18 through 22. Each July, for a quarter century, MMF has offered area youth this unique opportunity to experience the joy of playing an instrument. Children ages six to 18 can try out a new instrument or continue lessons on their current instrument. All lessons are taught by the Young Artists of the Manchester Music Festival, pre-professional students from the United States and many foreign countries, who come to Manchester to study chamber music for six weeks during the summer. Lessons are offered in violin, viola, cello, piano, and
recorder. Instruments can be rented through MMF. Students ages six and seven with no instrumental experience are limited to violin or recorder. The 50-minute lessons are taught at 9 or 10 a.m. Monday through Friday in Manchester. Each student can expect one or two other students of comparable age and experience in their lesson group. The week ends with a student recital at the First Congregational Church. The cost for the week is $25 per student. Instrument rental is additional and runs $25 to $30 depending on the instrument. Deadline for receipt of applications is July 4, 2011. Visit www. mmfvt.org to learn more about the program and download an application or call the Manchester Music Festival at 362-1956.

Chen house; The Joy of Cooking. But pizza deliveries, frozen dinners and baking experiments aside, Helen can name over 100 favorite home-cooked dishes. When her mother was not at the restaurant, much cooking and entertaining was done in the Chen home. Helen Chen’s work combines a devotion to authentic Chinese cuisine with a knack for ingenuity. Her goal is to make Asian cooking more accessible and convenient to all. She also believes, whenever possible, in making it healthier by lowering fat content and using hearthealthy cooking oils while still keeping the taste authentic and pure. She travels regularly to the Far East to develop new recipes and products while visiting family there. Following this event, Helen will be available for questions and to sign her books; Easy Asian Noodles, and Easy Chinese Stir Fries.
