Hildene seeks kids for June 4 parade By Matthew Rice

Everyone loves a parade, but it’s not often that the marchers get to be part of history while having fun riding along the parade route. On Saturday, June 4 Hildene welcomes the Pullman Palace car known as Sunbeam to her new hometown, Manchester, with a celebratory parade. The rain date will be the next day, Sunday, June 5. The folks at Hildene, the Lincoln Family Home, organizers of the parade hope to see a big turnout from surrounding communities for smiling faces to be in the parade. “I would love kids in the communities surrounding Manchester north and south, east and west where the Northshire Free Press goes to get the message and register to ride,” Hildene’s Paula Maynard said. The star of the show is the 65-foot Sunbeam, which will command considerable attention as she passes by atop the flatbed truck that brought her more than 1,000 miles from

The parade’s destination is the 412-acre estate that was home to three generations of Lincolns for 70 years, and is perfectly suited as a site for Sunbeam. Hildene is the ancestral home of presidential son, Robert T. Lincoln, who presided over the Pullman Company from 1897 to 1924. Sunbeam came off the line in 1903 during his tenure. This is also a Pullman car accustomed to celebrity, having played a role in the histories of three U.S.

Presidents: William McKinley, Theodore Roosevelt and Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Many elements go into making a parade truly great and Hildene hopes to have them all from marching bands to fun modes of transportation, the participation of community groups and lots of children are a must. For that reason Hildene is calling all kids from pre-school age on up to 12-year-olds to participate in the Pullman Parade. Signing up will be on a first

come, first served basis. Don’t worry about your opportunity, sign ups have just begun. Kids ages five to 7 are invited to ride in Hildene’s bright red school bus. Each kid will get their own train whistle. Officially referred to as a steam trumpet, whistles were used historically to warn of approaching trains and to communicate with rail workers. Kids from 8-12 will receive railroad caps for their ride aboard Hildene’s tractor-drawn farm wagon.

Riders of all ages, 8 and above are invited to dress themselves and their bicycles in all manner of red, white and blue. Each will receive a noisemaker or streamer for their bike. The Pullman Parade will commence at 10 a.m., just north of the Orvis Green and proceed south on Route 7, passing the Equinox Resort. After passing the hotel, the parade will travel a short distance to Hildene. There it will

Momentum building for Shires of Vermont Marathon By Matthew Rice For the first one of its kind, the Shires of Vermont Marathon is coming together quite well for the Sunday May 15 start, organizers said Friday. “It’s proven to be an organizational challenge, with lots of things we hadn’t expected but we seem to be pulling it together,” race director David Durfee said. Southern Vermont’s first full marathon is little more than a week away and runners are registering from all across the country for the race celebrating the settlement and chartering of much of Bennington County 250 years ago. Durfee said organizers expect more than 300 runners to participate in the 26.2-mile race on May 15. This marathon will be point-to-point allowing runners to traverse an entire area versus returning to the same place they started. Runners start at 9 a.m. and Durfee said those hoping to watch the historic first ever finish to the race should be at the finish line at Hildene Meadows prior to noon as the fastest runners finish in less than three hours. Runners will continue to cross the line until 3 or even 4 p.m. Sponsored by Southwestern

Race director David Durfee Vermont Health Care and the Vermont Country Store, the race begins at the Bennington Center for the Arts and ends at Hildene Meadows in Manchester. Race Director David Durfee said the expected certification has come through and the marathon will be official, thanks to the approval us U.S. Track and Field the sport’s governing body. “Certification signals that the course has been accurately measured. That will spike registration because runners know they can use their times to qualify for national marathons,

such as Boston and New York,” Durfee said. The course is also certifiably beautiful, he said, crossing one covered bridge and traversing back road stretches in early spring through Shaftsbury, Arlington, and Manchester. Runners will also pass through the centers of North Bennington and Arlington. “Technically, the course is not too demanding,” Durfee noted. “People are worried about having to run up steep mountains when they hear ‘Vermont’, but the altitude gain is only about 500 feet, which puts the Shires Marathon in the same class as many urban courses known to runners for being fast.” An event of this size requires many volunteers to work as road marshals at intersections and help with parking and other duties. Volunteers get an event t-shirt and a front row seat on all the action. Durfee said there is no such thing as too many volunteers and about 150 are expected to turn out to help make the race a success. “This is a more the merrier kind of thing; if there are too many people – great they can

Parade Continued from front page turn onto the road that leads to the Welcome Center at the family’s historic carriage barn. Here the festivities will continue with remarks from invited guests, refreshments, and if all goes as planned, the craning of the Sunbeam onto temporary rails and a celebratory champagne launch. “Part of the festivities, at some point, will be picking it up and placing it,”

Maynard said. When final construction on the site is completed Sunbeam the Pullman car, will give Hildene a platform to interpret not only this important chapter in Robert Lincoln’s life but that of the country during the Gilded Age, a period in our history that gave voice to the labor movement and the rise of the Black middle class with the Pullman porters. The site interpretation planned for the car, entitled ‘Many Voices,’ will highlight these historical influences. Hildene looks forward

not only to the celebratory arrival of Sunbeam on June 4 but to the date it finally opens to the public, August 1. Hildene is open year round from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Parents who wish to register children for participation in the Pullman Parade, contact Paula at 802.367.7961 or email paula@ hildene.org. Marathon Continued from front page stand by and cheer,” Durfee said. Those interested in volunteering can call 802-442-5491 x 313 or email volunteer@ shiresofver montmarathon. com. Full details are available on the beautiful event web site designed by Scott Printz, www. ShiresOfVer montMarathon. com. “It’s an incredible experience to volunteer for a mara-

thon like this,” Durfee said. “The atmosphere around a race is very inspiring. Plus you meet great people and get swept up by the energy and drama.” The Shires of Vermont Marathon is being organized by the Batten Kill Valley Runners, a local club that organizes road races throughout the year in southwestern Vermont and neighboring New York State. Proceeds from the Shires of Vermont Marathon will benefit programs for children and families at United Counseling Service. “The race was conceived as a way to celebrate 250 years in an area collectively know as the Shires, so we chose that name,” Durfee said. The idea for the marathon actually came about during a meeting of the Battenkill Valley Runners Durfee could not attend. Instead of going, he sent along an email to club president Jack Quinn. “I sent an email telling him I had this idea - toss it around and see what people think,” he said. That was 18 months and many, many organizational hours later for the group. Although he said he’s nervous as the start date approaches some of that feeling is nervous excitement. “There’s a lot of concern about the details, but it’s been exciting to have it finally coming to fruition,” Durfee said.

Museum to close briefly The exhibition gallery at the American Museum of Fly Fishing will be closed from May 1 to June 10 in order to prepare for our next exhibit.
